@TheDoc1019 No problem at all. An advanced Auto Gain Control (AGC) and lo-cut filter allow the H2n to record audio at the most appropriate level while minimizing unwanted noise without having to adjust settings. If desired, you can also adjust the gain levels manually with the mic gain wheel. The built-in compressor/limiter puts a cap on maximum audio levels to ensure that your recordings remain distortion-free.
@trojancelis Your best choice would be to record in the mid-side mode which allows you to adjust the width of your stereo field for terrific flexibility. When recording in RAW mode, you can even adjust the field after you've made a recording.
@iPrank App I recommend choosing the mid-side mode which allows adjustment of the width of the stereo field for terrific flexibility, setting the perfect amount of ambient/surrounding noise. Mid-side recording combines a uni-directional mid mic that captures sound directly in front of you and a bi-directional side mic that captures sound from your left and right. By adjusting the level of the side mic, the width of the stereo field is controlled.
@gorrosound No problem at all. A high-speed USB 2.0 port lets you transfer recordings to your Mac or PC. You can even use the H2n as a live USB mic, terrific for VoIP chats and podcasting. The H2n can also act as a high-speed USB card reader.
@gorrosound The differential in price is well justified for the Zoom H2 as it offers 4 microphones and additional recording features that are beneficial. The H1 does have a very convenient, slim form factor that you may prefer however.
@jonock1 You do not have to turn or rotate the recorder to engage or perceive the benefit of the various mic recording modes. The H2n?s onboard 90° X/Y stereo condenser mics are arranged with the right and left mics on the same axis. This design ensures that the mics are always equidistant from the sound source for perfect localization and no phase shifting. The result is brilliant stereo recording with natural depth and accurate imaging.
@trojancelis A simple dial on top of the recorder lets you switch between traditional XY stereo, 2-channel surround, 4-channel surround, and a mid-side stereo mode. You cannot use two modes simultaneously. Only one recording mode may be selected at a time. Thank you for watching.
As always, perfect professional explanations about the product something that is often lacking in documentations in the social media. Thank you for being such a great company.
@Abraham Villegas Experiment a bit as every situation is different - but you will need to hear the results for yourself and choose whatever works best for you. Compare sessions recorded in X/Y Stereo and in Mid-Side modes to obtain the optimal soundstaging and presence possible.
@Searchinganswers B&H offers a wired remote control available as part of this kit: B&H# ZOAPH2N. The recorder has a timer function available in record and playback modes and also a remaining recordable time indicator.
The unit is designed to have the operator face the screen and the sound source on the other side for stereo and mid-side recording; which is how you'd probably want to use it to record a band in a field recording. If you're doing surround recordings, then it records sound from 360 degrees around the unit.
No problem at all. The H2n has an unprecedented 5 microphones built in, providing you with 4 selectable recording patterns to choose from. But your audio will be richer and more pleasing if you can stay close to your subject. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. Mark S.

@riKringkast Traditional XY (stereo) recording mimics human hearing. The MS technique gives you more control over the width of the stereo spread than other microphone recording techniques, and allows you to make adjustments at any time after the recording is finished. When you are recording I see you have the screen side away from you, is that always the best way, have the sound source (such as a band in a field recording) facing the non screen side ? Thanks great review.
hello..thanks for a good video...i'm using GH2 and H2N..any cable that reduce sound volume to the h2n while it connect..?found 1 cable,,sescom cable Sescom LN2MIC-ZMGH-MON 3.5 Line to 2.5 Mic 25dB for Zoom H4N with Monitoring Tap but it is for H4N..is it the same to H2n..?
Thank for a swift and detailed response! I'm a student, and as such have a limited budget. Now I know that at $150 H2n isn't exactly cheap, but I'm willing to spend that amount if it'll secure good lecture recordings. Forking out over $230 for a shotgun mic is a bit too much I'm afraid. I should also mention that I need something compact, which is why I went for a dictaphone-type recorder rather than a shotgun mic. If you can recommend a cheaper, but good, dictaphone, I'd be very interested :)
The mid-side mode is commonly used in film and broadcast and allows adjustment of the width of your stereo field for terrific flexibility, setting the perfect amount of ambient/surrounding noise. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. Mark S.
You're the best ! I really needed to be sure it has a speaker. I'm always outdoors, so recording myself without being able to hear what I record before going home, that would be a torture.
If you were just recording a concert happening in front of you, not wanting audience sound from the side, just as good a stereo sound as poss, would you do it in 96/24, XY only ? Auto gain ? Thanks !

This thing sounds really awesome, but is there a cheaper version for about 100 bucks? Because I'd rather get the rode videomic with a cheaper recorder. It'd really help if somebody could lead me to some other cheaper one, if not I guess I could spend a while researching... :(
@Ariel ASMR The H2n is conveniently equipped with a built-in 1/4"-20 standard tripod threading on the chassis bottom. +J. Springston It sure will. The Zoom H2n will record to a WAV or MP3 file. Since UA-cam?s not designed to host files that are exclusively audio (.MP3, .WAV, etc.) you'll need to combine audio and image files into a format that will work on UA-cam. You can use free programs like Windows Live Movie Maker or iMovie to add an image to an audio track so you can convert it into a .WMV video file. After you?ve converted the file, you can then upload it to UA-cam. bit.ly/1lJA4pY Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com. Mark S.
I like this recorder. I've sothe so much about the test Tascam recorders and they seem to have so many bugs. Would you recommend this for recording music please. Thank you very much any advice would be appreciated. Gosh, that windscreen works very well
This model has a built-metronome and tone measurement device (I think). Have you used these and how do they work? How's the volume on the metronome and does one have a decent set of speeds available. What are the pitches of the tone measurement device. Thanks Rob.
Did you apply any post effects the recorded audio? It sounded really good, it seems very natural, so I was wondering if you did any post or not. Usually when I record with all the zoom products I have it picks up alot of low end so I have to use an HPF but I was wondering if this was at all the case with your review. Thanks , and I look forward to your reply!
I am recording a vocalist in a recital hall with this mic. Should the mic be placed in front of the singer or in the audience area to capture the sound from there?
@standrick the compressor completely sucks. i just got my h2n. the mic, or probably rather the built in amps create noise, which is a problem with any mic, actually. got the same with a studio mic of comparable quality/price. but the compressor presets all increase this noise drastically, which makes most recordings useless unless you intentionally want that noise. but i think it's good to keep the recording as raw as possible anyway. ;) hope that helps!
Does this recorder have a built-in speaker for quick playback of what you have recorded? Also, does this recorder have a built-in USB port for must you connect a flash drive with a USB cord?
I just ordered this impressive little device and I've got a question regarding which mic settings I should use. I'll be using it to record college lectures, so I'm mostly interested in getting sound from the front. The auditorium I'm sitting in houses 400 students, so there's going to be a fair bit of background noise. What would be the best settings for a front-only recording with high background noise? (XY or MS with a cutoff for the background noise?)
I want to ask something. When I connect the guitar to the zoom h2n device, the microphones on the device are canceled. However, I want to connect my guitar to the zoom h2 as in the zoom h5 and h6 devices and perform vocal recording with the microphones at the same time. Is this possible? thanks
Will connecting this recorder to android phone using splitter cable at the usb port be able to capture audio while doing video recording (open camera app external mic enabled)? Wondering if this doable instead of doing post-recording syncing step. Thanks
Thanks for this video! Can I record directly from my computer with this recorder. I am having an impossible time finding out if it is possible to record sounds from my computer into any audio recorder let alone this one.
For recording a jam session, (two guitars, bass and drums) and the mic placed in the middle of the room, wich mic setting would be the most apropiate one ?

Can I fit this microphone to the hotshoe of my DSLR? How does this microphone compare to the RODE Stereo VideoMic Pro? Why has the DSLR mounting kit for the H2N been dis-continued? That's a possible deal-breaker for me.
Hi, I'm aiming for recording bird voices (apart from recording my own spoken words). Would the Zoom H2N as well be useful as a mobile recording device in connection with a shotgun/directional microphone?
could this unit be used to record audio within a college classroom? If not does zoom make and unit that can be used to record audion in a classroom setting (where the instructor might be 10 to 20 feet away)? Thank you
thanks for your video... Is there a way to adjust existing sound files from previous recordings within device.. File description: XY mode.. non-raw file.. (hoping to back off crowd noise against my guitar performance. Thank you for any help!
I have a question about mic Zoom H2N for writting music (guitar and singing). About settings - should I use auto gain setting or wheel on right side of mic? Maybe you have other tips for using this mic when recording live performance (inside/outside) to get best quality. Thank you for information and all the best luck!
Thanks for sharing. I like that you actually use the mic that you are reviewing. A few I have seen are talking into another mic while reviewing another. You artfully have given enough to feel the features. Thanks again.
The best mode for ASMR may well be the 2ch or 4ch surround modes: Sound can be captured in all directions using both MS and XY mics. You can select 2ch, which mixes the signals from the MS and XY mics, or 4ch, which records the signals from the MS and XY mics separately. With 4ch surround, you can adjust the balance between the MS and XY signals after recording. The S level can be adjusted for both 2ch and 4ch recordings. These modes are suitable for recording live rehearsals, studio sessions, business meetings and soundscapes, for example. But I would strongly suggest experimenting with all the available modes to determine which mode best suits your particular project. >Mark
The XY setup generally offers you a workable but narrower, more focused stereo image than other stereo-miking techniques and there is often a 3 dB drop in the center of the image as the center sound information is hitting both mics off-axis. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. Mark S
Im looking for a recorder like this but with a timer for recording. OOOR a remote controle to start the recording. Anyone know a good one? Beeeeest regards.

Is it possible to record through the lav mic and the build in microphones at the same time? And will it then be on two seperate channels so to have two seperate audio waves?
+Ruan Van der Westhuizen - No it would not be possible to record with an external lav and the built-in mic at the same time. According to the H2n's manual: An external mic can be used *instead* of the XY stereo mic. An external mic *cannot be used with MS Stereo mode*. >Mark
PLEASE HOW DID YOU REMOVE THE WHITE NOISE OR BUZZING NOISE FROM THIS MICROPHONE, IM A SINGER AND I NEED TO REMOVE THAT BECAUSE WHEN I TRY TO RECORD A SONG IT'S ALWAYS THERE AND IT'S REALLY ANNOYING. HELP PLEASE, I'M DESPERATE!!!
The recorder should not be humming or buzzing. Make sure you are not using the recorder near any products with large motors or compressors or similar sources of electromagnetic radiation. Also check to make sure you are not recording near HVAC vents or units. Please have this unit serviced if necessary. Please e-mail us at: askbh@bandh if you have additional questions. >Mark
+andrewvanrhoberts No, the H2n only records one stereo track at a time. It will either use the on-board mics, or an external one, but not both together. The Zoom H4n, H5, and H6 can record externally with on-board simultaneously. You can mount the recorder with the Revo Hot Shoe to 1/4"-20 Male Post Adapter which has a threaded 1/4"-20 stud on the top and a "cold" male flash shoe on the bottom (B&H # RESACS14M). The built-in mics will rival the performance of the Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro and offer the added benefit of a back-up recording. I liked the entire tutorial . I just want to ask you that is it possible to attach my H2n with a tripod and use is a boom mic . I did and the problem was even when I hold this device , I can hear that holding noise even, which is really annoying, or if attch it with Anything still there is that holding noise if I move from one character to another . Kindly help me with it that how should I remove this holding noise which recording.

Would this work for recording nature sounds or sound effects? Let's say I want to record a crow cawing outside, would this work? I can do a lot of editing, I edited the sound of the in built mic of my DSLR to something decent.. But I would like a handheld device with the best quality to be able to do this. So my question: Would this one work for that, and if not.. which portable recorder would be best suited for this?
@riKringkast The quality of the H2n belies its low price point. Consider a lower priced voice recorder, if you will: Philips 8GB Voice Tracer 865 Digital Recorder with Zoom Mic System - B&H # PHPVTR8658G. Please e-mail any additional questions to: AskBH@BandH.com
Dear, can we record the audio from Rode NT USB mic into external recorders like 'Zoom H2n' etc. The reason is that my windows 10 on my Desktop PC has made the audio coming from USB mics like trash due to driver bug issues in windows 10. Please reply for the sake of humanity.

I really want to someone to do a more in depth video explaining the compressor/limiter feature and how it can be used to prevent clipping in loud situations.
What settings should I use if I want to record directly off a mixing board at a live event? I just joined this band and they do their own arrangements of classic rock & country songs. I want a recording so I can tweak what I'm doing and look for opportunities to add additional harmonies where needed. Thanks for Listening !!!

This handy little recorder offers 4 selectable recording patterns to choose from. For ambient recording you may want to experiment a bit to obtain the most pleasing results. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. Mark S.
It sure is - but you would want to mic your subjects closely by using wired lavaliers or suspending the Zoom recorder from a boompole just outside the frame of the shot, but as close to your subject as possible. Can this mic have a lavaliere mic attached to it? if so i guess i will buy it right away
Yes. A lavalier mic with a mini 1/8" (3.5mm) connector will work. Polsen OLM-10 Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone

Hi, just got this baby and have to do some indoor interviews. Just wondering what settings you used for making this video?
Can I fit this microphone to the hotshoe of my DSLR? How does this microphone compare to the RODE Stereo VideoMic Pro? Why has the DSLR mounting kit for the H2N been dis-continued? That's a possible deal-breaker for me.
Hi, I'm aiming for recording bird voices (apart from recording my own spoken words). Would the Zoom H2N as well be useful as a mobile recording device in connection with a shotgun/directional microphone?
Hi I need a device to capture sound samples like doors slamming and banging metal, would this device be appropriate?. Cheers
Versus zoom h1n is there comparison?
could this unit be used to record audio within a college classroom? If not does zoom make and unit that can be used to record audion in a classroom setting (where the instructor might be 10 to 20 feet away)? Thank you
thanks for your video... Is there a way to adjust existing sound files from previous recordings within device.. File description: XY mode.. non-raw file.. (hoping to back off crowd noise against my guitar performance. Thank you for any help!
Is this good enough for recording dialogue in a film?
Can i have this connected directly to my DSLR through a 3.5mm cable?
cool how is the sound quality
Would this be good for recording LOUD live concerts?
I have a question about mic Zoom H2N for writting music (guitar and singing). About settings - should I use auto gain setting or wheel on right side of mic? Maybe you have other tips for using this mic when recording live performance (inside/outside) to get best quality. Thank you for information and all the best luck!
Could you please tell me, what programe did you use to add both the audio and the video together?
How far can I be away from the H2N? Could I mount it on my DSLR and start like 1~2 meters away?
You cant fault the recordings made with this unit. But that recording pattern dial on the top of the unit - is that fiddly to turn or what?!!
Thanks for sharing. I like that you actually use the mic that you are reviewing. A few I have seen are talking into another mic while reviewing another. You artfully have given enough to feel the features. Thanks again.
awesome review! thanks! any settings you would recommend off the bat for filming a movie outside?
That was a great short review ! Subscribed !
What setting should be done for ASMR audio from H2N ...please help me by replying
The best mode for ASMR may well be the 2ch or 4ch surround modes:
Sound can be captured in all directions using
both MS and XY mics.
You can select 2ch, which mixes the signals
from the MS and XY mics, or 4ch, which records
the signals from the MS and XY mics separately.
With 4ch surround, you can adjust the balance
between the MS and XY signals after recording.
The S level can be adjusted for both 2ch and 4ch
recordings.
These modes are suitable for recording live
rehearsals, studio sessions, business meetings and soundscapes, for example.
But I would strongly suggest experimenting with all the available modes to determine which mode best suits your particular project. >Mark
@@BandH I am so thankful for your reply and suggestion.
hi does it have attenuation
The XY setup generally offers you a workable but narrower, more focused stereo image than other stereo-miking techniques and there is often a 3 dB drop in the center of the image as the center sound information is hitting both mics off-axis.

Im looking for a recorder like this but with a timer for recording. OOOR a remote controle to start the recording. Anyone know a good one? Beeeeest regards.
Yes -you can connect via the 3.5mm Line OUT port using an attenuation cable into your camera's microphone input port: B&H # SEL2MZH4N. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh{at}bandh{dot}com. Mark S.
how to hear 4ch... douest it output 4ch or dual stereo
How do you connect the camera with the H2N? Or do you just sync them in post production?
Is it possible to record through the lav mic and the build in microphones at the same time? And will it then be on two seperate channels so to have two seperate audio waves?
+Ruan Van der Westhuizen -
No it would not be possible to record with an external lav and the built-in mic at the same time. According to the H2n's manual: An external mic can be used *instead* of the XY stereo mic. An external mic *cannot be used with MS Stereo mode*.

+B and H Okay, thanks Mark for the feedback
>Mark
Why I don't have in menu, folder and Rec options?
You may need to update the Zoom H2n's firmware: Go to Zoom-na.com and click on "Support and Downloads". bit.ly/3k7MaM9 >Mark
I want to attach this to a camera hot shoe. Can you put a external mic into this and record simultaneously with the H2's mics?
+andrewvanrhoberts No, the H2n only records one stereo track at a time. It will either use the on-board mics, or an external one, but not both together. The Zoom H4n, H5, and H6 can record externally with on-board simultaneously. To mount it on your camera shoe, see the link below for a recommended adapter. - Yossi bhpho.to/1g2x1BO

My band just bought one of these. I want to know what do you recommend on settings and stuff like that if we want to record our rehearsals and jams ?
I liked the entire tutorial . I just want to ask you that is it possible to attach my H2n with a tripod and use is a boom mic . I did and the problem was even when I hold this device , I can hear that holding noise even, which is really annoying, or if attch it with Anything still there is that holding noise if I move from one character to another . Kindly help me with it that how should I remove this holding noise which recording.
You will need to isolate the recorder from the boom arm/boom pole to minimize any handling noise by using a shock mount: Rycote 041119 Portable Recorder Suspension

i want to use this for recording my drum beats, do you think this mic will give a clean sound even with loud sounds?
The recorder's mics will work just fine for this application. You will need to experiment a bit with the recorder's placement for the best results.

The Zoom H2n should do a very nice job for this type of local wildlife recording. >Mark
Thanks! I asked around at some other places as well and all of them say this is the one for that purpose, so I am convinced.
whats the best settings to commentaries and stuffs?
@riKringkast
The quality of the H2n belies its low price point. Consider a lower priced voice recorder, if you will:

How tall is mic stand?
Dear, can we record the audio from Rode NT USB mic into external recorders like 'Zoom H2n' etc. The reason is that my windows 10 on my Desktop PC has made the audio coming from USB mics like trash due to driver bug issues in windows 10. Please reply for the sake of humanity.
This recorder will not accept a USB microphone. >Mark
okej! Nothing works good for me :/ do u know good settings to podcasts?
What kind of stand/tripod did you put the zoom on?
+Jane Willow Any standard tripod that offers a 1/4"-20 male threaded stud will work. In this case we used a 1/4"-20 adapter on the top of a lighting/C-stand.

Thank you so much, Mark.
I really want to someone to do a more in depth video explaining the compressor/limiter feature and how it can be used to prevent clipping in loud situations.
Is the H2N about to get followed up with something newer?
What length USB cable is included in the accessory pack? is it 1.8m or just 1m?

What settings should I use if I want to record directly off a mixing board at a live event? I just joined this band and they do their own arrangements of classic rock & country songs. I want a recording so I can tweak what I'm doing and look for opportunities to add additional harmonies where needed. Thanks for Listening !!!
Connect the Zoom H2n from its 3.5mm LINE input to a convenient Line output from the mixing board. Adjust the level to avoid distortion.
