    I have watched this video numerous times. Very impressive band from start to finish, especially their salute at the war monument 5:30. I wish all bands would follow their good example. It will help more people realize/remember that the memorial is there and who is honors.

      ..I saw a Royal Marine Drum Major salute our Auckland Cenotaph while they were performing for the public. It was unusual, as even Kiwi bands and formations don't acknowledge it when passing it.

    Nathenial Becken - the statue is of an Irish Guardsman, not a paratrooper. The regiment lost a lot of men in Afghanistan. The Irish Guards are based near Windsor (it is considered "their town") hence the positioning of the statue. I guess the RCAF were being courteous, as they were leading the Irish Guards back to barracks. As for other comments - the police hate their high viz, as for telling armed police to remove their "baseball caps" whilst on duty at the cenotaph, why?? They need to be recognisable immediately as police should the shit hit the fan. Considering we (the British public) is such a target it's a miracle that any public events such as this continue, I'll can only assume you are not local.

    Now I'm not saying I'm ungrateful to the police, but does an armed guard that has it's own armed escort really need armed officers around it?
    Anyway, there's that thought. Always good to see another force's band leading!

    • @DanielKjeldal
      @DanielKjeldal 6 років тому +12

      Well there are a few issues with not having armed police, a soldier discharging his firearm at a civilian of his own nation is really quite bad, but even worse would be for these Canadian airmen to fire at British civilians, that would cause one hell of a diplomatic and legal issue that would most likely involve a huge expenditure in time and money.
      Also I doubt most people would really like to see soldiers firing in the streets, it just doesn't make them look good.
      Outside of special circumstances, like the terror attacks in Paris, soldiers should not be expected to police the streets, the clue as to who should is in the name of the term policing.
      So it really makes sense for there to be armed police escorting the guard. It may seem redundant, but they are really the only ones with legal authority to intervene with lethal force against civilians barring special circumstances.

    • @adameleven7628
      @adameleven7628 6 років тому +5

      Daniel Kjeldal I’m not sure about the British guards but we never carry a loaded rifle during parade,inspection or etc and I’m pretty sure the British don’t either. However if a soldier was dumb enough to discharge his rifle you should just have the armed police at certain positions not escorting the March.

    • @DanielKjeldal
      @DanielKjeldal 6 років тому +2

      Well yes, needless to say soldiers on parade would not have loaded weapons in public streets, but the point of armed police escorting them is still simply the fact that the man in front of the column can see things faster than a man standing at the sidewalk.
      Personally, as a person living in a nation without an army, and even armed police except at the international airport, my feeling is that in this day and age where there are people who hate everything our nations are built upon, a little extra security is not a bad thing.
      Again, it may seem silly to have a policeman escort soldiers carrying rifles, but I would much rather see that than news of some scumbag plowing down a column of soldiers with a truck.

    A piece of information to give to the Yanks - the Canadians were the original "over sexed, over paid, and over here" :) Well they did arrive on time - twice. Come on! I'm over 70 and haven't yet been trained in PC speak.

      It's usually only the Irish guards that salute in that particular spot.
      The reason the Irish guards do an eyes right is that there is a
      Statue/memorial to fallen Irish soldiers.

      A lot different from when they had to parade and be inspected, see them around with no headgear, boots looking like they have never seen any polish, all wearing different clothes. I know the old uniform was impracticable but no reason to look so scruffy.

      Yes, but not dissimilar to when the Household Divisions do the duty. You only need so many soldiers/airmen to handle the guard, but you still need a full band complement.

    Very smart band but there's something terribly wrong with that bass drum's sound. Its got about 2 prominent harmonics, the bottom is too low and the higher so hard and harsh it obliterates the rest of band completely. Sounds like someone dropping watermelons on a shipping container.
