Yeah, you are the man my friend because no one shows or tells the info that you show.thankyou for some help .I just rebuilt the exact same engine you are working on in this video(87 marathon) split the case and everything it was like 500$ to rebuild.the cart runs pretty good but it's a bit low on take off power, plenty of compression and the case is tight however I did loose the flywheel side seal just like you said and that is how I figured out that the exhaust was clogged.any help you can give me on how to get the low end torque increased would be appreciated, carb is clean, have not checked the feul pump nor did I mess with reeds all seems good there .pretty sure it's got to do with the clutches ordered new belt going to try that first before messing with the clutches .runs really good just the low end take off torque is what I need help with thank you great video.suscribed and rang bell.
By chance do you know what model mikuni carb you cleaned. I’m missing the bowl gasket and the float needle is bad on my 1986 ezgo and I can’t find any model # for the mikuni that’s on the cart. Thank you! Awesome video!
Not really sure. They are sold specific to the carts so part numbers are probably designated by the cart manufacturer. Its probably going to be cheaper and more efficient to replace the carb.
So I have a 1990 ezgo marathon I bought that sat out in a field for years. I got it to fire if I put fuel in the cylinder but it won’t pull anything from the carb. I cleaned the carb out and filled it up manually but my question is, do I need a fuel pump hooked up? Shouldn’t it still pull fuel out of the carb through the vacuum?
I’m working on a cart, same as this one but the choke is on top as opposed to the side. The owner said it ran fine last year but it’s a no start this year. I drained the gas, replaced fuel lines and filter, cleaned the carb following your video, 110lbs compression, good spark but still no start even with starting fluid. I can turn it over all day and the only thing on the plug is oil? Thanks.
Sounds like one of the crank seals is blown out. Usually the crank seal behind the fan blows out and the engine will not run no matter what you do. You will have to remove the engine from the cart, pull the blower cover, fan and flywheel to replace the seal.
Your best bet would be to google the wire diagram. The starter/generator is easy to hook up. The forward/reverse switch on the 2-cycle engines is just a high current double pole, double throw switch. It reverses the polarity going through the starter generator to give you bi-directional rotation.
Hey kevin so i had some problems with my ezgo 1990 2 stroke it was having problems starting .and i found your video and i went out and cleaned my carb .i got it all together back in and its still not starting
@@Kevinsgolfcarts Have the 2 stroke ezgo just like in your video. It runs. It has a new fuel pump and carb. When driving gas starts coming out of the over flow. We tried with 2 new carbs and still the same issue. Any ideas?
I see this now that I’m home. Mine runs about 1/2 throttle then maxes out. Very slow. Just found main jet loose and about popped out. Ordered a new carb for $20
Thanks for the video! I cleaned the carb but it still won't start. Going to pull the engine and change the fan side seal. would you happen to have a part number for that seal? Thanks again!
I've got an 85 ez-go 2 stroke. I cleaned the carb. It has good spark. It will run for a little bit if the with the choke on but I can't figure it out. Any ideas what's wrong?
redo your carb clean, make sure to really really make sure that the gas input hole is perfectly cleaned and free of blockage. I just did the same procedure because of the same issue. Also, replace your fuel filter(s).
And also I can’t get it to stop back firing . I replaced the muffler and gaskets and still keeps back firing when I let off the gas then give it gas again it back fires load like a gun shot.
If you are backfiring like that then you need to adjust the throttle plate to open AFTER the solenoid engages the starter/generator. As you press the pedal, the starter/generator should start cranking the engine before the throttle plate on the carburetor opens. This holds true for starting and while driving. I know that probably sounds confusing. I will have a video coming out explaining this.
No problem, I'm currently working on a 84. Had to put new bearings and seals in the engine. Do you happen to know anyway to test and/or rebuild the oil pumps?
Not really. The oil pumps rarely fail and when they do, its easier and more effective to just mix oil and gas 128:1 in the tank. 1oz of oil to 1 gallon of fuel.
Yes, Thanks Nicholas S., I was wondering why my 1990 EZGO had a different motor and orientation of that motor. ( Had to double check to make sure I didn't make the same mistake as Kevin). Mine is a 1990. Thanks Kevin, good video, was looking for one that had a tear down of the carburetor, the one shown here is basically the same as what is on my 1990.
Kevin's Golf Carts 128 to one seems Mighty lean I'm guessing those engines had very high tolerances I'm starting a job at a golf cart repair shop and they have quite a few of those in the graveyard and I would like to resurrect one preferably the earlier ones that are not oil injected just to keep things simple because I'm very good at small engines in two strokes and all that stuff so it'd be neat to resurrect an older one if parts are as available as the oil injected ones is there a certain year to a certain year I should be looking for in their graveyard for the non oil injected one
That's exactly what I thought too. 128:1, really?! I have a 1984 that I fully rebuilt and it runs on 128:1 mix. It had the oil injection but I stopped using since mixing isn't a big deal to me. It runs real good and its actually faster and stronger than any other golf cart in that generation. It doesn't smoke, it starts every time with no choke, even when cold. As far as restoring ones that are oil injected, you can still mix and disconnect the oil injector pump. Its held on with 2 screws. I've done that many times after the pumps failed. They usually last forever as long as they are not run dry.
You helped me get an 85 EZGO going. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Really generous to share all this experience & to take the time to make the video. Your customers are lucky to have you helping.
If that had been me taking the carb apart over the drain tank at least 2 of the small parts would have fallen right through that grate into the tank!!
Been there, haha. You could use a piece of window screen over the grate to catch small parts so they don't end up in the junk.

I didn’t know that. Ordered a new one today. I appreciate the quick response. Thanks again!
20:20 just give it a lil uhhhn!” I knew exactly how tight that was lol
That's a very specific torque setting lol.
Thanks for posting. Great job

I should also add that it won’t even fire if I spray starter fluid in the carb

116falconer I have one and the issue was battery
Just bought an 89 marathon and can’t get spark intermittently. More times than not no spark though. Any suggestions?
What is the small line coming from the top of carb..does it connect anywhere on the other end ,?
I'm looking for a wiring diagram for a 1988 gas ezgo. Starter is missing and i'm trying to get it going again. Can you help?
Your best bet would be to google the wire diagram. The starter/generator is easy to hook up. The forward/reverse switch on the 2-cycle engines is just a high current double pole, double throw switch. It reverses the polarity going through the starter generator to give you bi-directional rotation.
Hi Can you help me I have 1982 ezgo 2cycle ,need oil change or don’t need ,that 2 cycle oil change or add more
Hey kevin so i had some problems with my ezgo 1990 2 stroke it was having problems starting .and i found your video and i went out and cleaned my carb .i got it all together back in and its still not starting
You will need to do a compression test, check for spark and make sure fuel is flowing from the pump.

I’m trying to tune my 86 ezgo 2 cycle I can’t find out what the factory settings are. Do you know a good base line to start at?
What was the compression PSI? Should it be like other 2 cycle engines, 120 PSI? Thank you.
Do you have a video on tuning the carb ??
There's really nothing to adjust or tune on these carbs. They are already set at a fixed mixture, unfortunately.

will do one tomorrow thanks for the video instructions

Any chance of going through the electrical to get it started
I'm not quite sure what you mean. In this video, there was nothing wrong with the electrical system.
I've got an 85 ez-go 2 stroke. I cleaned the carb. It has good spark. It will run for a little bit if the with the choke on but I can't figure it out. Any ideas what's wrong?

according to ez-go the year on this is 1987, as denoted by the model number not the serial number....but everything is same anyway
The year is in the Date Code listed in the glove box or frame rail.
And also I can’t get it to stop back firing . I replaced the muffler and gaskets and still keeps back firing when I let off the gas then give it gas again it back fires load like a gun shot.

lots of people recommend a spring between the throttle and the throttle cable
Don't drive through Baltimore with that cart, it will end badly for you.
Why should you not toe and easy go kart without taking the belt loose
Older 2-cycle carts don't have neutral. Towing with the drive belt on will cause excessive wear and heat to the belt and clutches.
You are reading the wrong numbers for the year. its an 1987 not a 1990.
You're right! I completely missed that during editing. Thank you for kindly pointing that out!

Were the older ones not oil injection
Some were not oil injected and required 128:1 mix, 1oz of oil to 1 gallon of gas.
