I like her. But I admit I have a thing for people who don't know their mother language or just simply let their culture die out from them like that. I know it's not always their fault (parents have a lot of responsibility on that), but I still think it's wrong. I'm Ecuadorian and lived in Canada for 5 years. I was forbidden to speak english at home and I thank my parents for that. I think you should always be proud of where you come from. Embracing your culture is the most basic thing to do to be coherent with that.
Well of course you should be proud. But her not knowing French is certainly not her fault. In fact, years ago it was customary to not speak your parents' native tongue in the US. My dad is half Mexican (my grandmother was form Mexico). She did not speak any Spanish to my dad because she wanted him to assimilate. Neither person was wrong. It is unfortunate but that is the way it was. Avril learning French is something to be commended. It shows that she is interested in the language. French does not come naturally to her. It is not her native tongue. Her native tongue is English--a language which has very different sounds. It is difficult to learn another language as an adult. A lot of work must go into it. You were fortunate. Not everyone has the same luck you had.

Avril Lavigne grew up in Canada (even if her province's official language is english, she has French immersion as an option) and her father is fucking french, so I do think it's a shame she speaks such a poor French. I understand your point, and I'm not angry with you, I just strongly disagree.
