I think most people don't realize how INSANELY HUGE dragon quest is in Japan. I believe that was the franchise that started the common practice of japanese gamers taking a week off when a game drops to complete it ASAP. I think it's just as big if not bigger than final fantasy in the west
the best part about Coney Direct reaction is having him be stonefaced for all the big announcements, and then popping off for all the random things.
Coney is so funny because I have never seen a hypocrite be so ignorant of their hypocrisy. It’s hilarious how many of this guy’s opinions contradict one another, yet he doesn’t care. He says Sunshine is better than Galaxy but also says that any 30 FPS game is always worse than a 60 FPS game, and he says we’re negatively backtracking to GBA style games while saying he loves the return to SNES and NES style gameplay.

8:14 I genuinely don’t know what coneys problem with the visuals is, is it frame rate or something??? Cause the game def has a weird sort of sketchy watercolor art style but I think it looks cool, and wouldn’t really be affected by higher processing / visual power.
Yeah I don’t think he understands that this game would look exactly the same on pc. He might just not be used to the whole “new wave-ish” type of cg animation, where it combines 2D elements with 3D. That’s just the style man 🤷♀️

I see what he means. I think a lot of it has to do with the visuals and the music. While DKCR looks and sounds fine it doesn't have that spark that the other games had. It's an awesome game though.

Coney, as a 90's kid, I agree with you on the recent DK games. It has a soul, but it's not the same soul from the 90s. The DK games on the SNES had a treacherous type of vibe to them. Like the world was dangerous, wild and dark. The new games just feel like they have a Mario Vibe to them, instead of a Donkey Kong Vibe to them.
Still good games, just the soul has changed.
If I was in chat I would have said it reminds me of the super mario u games for the wii and such. Extremely bland and boring, multiplayer could be chaotic and fun though but typically when I hear the bah bahs in the music then the mario game felt soulless to me. (Not due to the music just saying that's when that was a huge feature of the music)

I didn't really get why Coney was so down on the Zelda game after seeing the gameplay, it looked like it could end up fairly interesting
1. It's the terrible Link's Awakening artstyle. Super childish and pretty ugly.
2. It's BOTW'ing 2D Zelda. A large reason why people wanted a new 2D Zelda was to return to the more traditional gemaply after being stuck with BOTW and TOTK as far as new entries go. Changing 2D Zelda to be more like the modern games defeats that purpose. All we have in terms of traditional Zelda is remaster/ports.

I loved the part of the direct where they spent 3 minutes explaining how basketball works.
I can't fathom how someone likes the chibi Zelda designs (I love them btw just making that clear) but hates HD 2D
Coney I agree with you on DKC Returns; it lacked soul compared to the ogs, but if you haven’t played Tropical Freeze you should give it a chance it’s actually incredible. Still doesn’t feel the same as the old ones, but it still has an amazing feel of its own with the top tier soundtrack and level design.
I completely disagree; I was a kid when I played the SNES Trilogy and when Returns came out in high school, I ADORED it. Was the perfect modern DKC (aside from the motion controls).
Please don’t say “soul”. It’s such a nothing word that means absolutely nothing in criticism. All it says is that you’ve got nostalgia bias and can’t think of a substantial reason why it isn’t working for you.

This is just just the worst of TotK slapped onto a tiny 2D Zelda world. Its actually the worst thing to come out of this series, I genuinely think I'd be more inclined to play a cdi game.
Christ, Zelda really got shafted hard, she gets to be the protagonist for the first time in a Nintendo developed game and she gets some gimmicky trash where you'll get to cheese every obstacle.
I really enjoyed BotW, but in hindsight it has had a disastrous influence on this series' future. TotK was enjoyable too, but got old and boring faster than BotW, this open world crap with no structure needs to go, they're just going to end up releasing the same game over and over under a different label.

Crazy, but I actually appreciate that they didn't give Zelda a sword. She's an icon of the concept of wisdom and she's consistently shown as her kingdom's ruler despite being a Princess. (seriously, let her be queen. I do wonder how much of that is a Japanese cultural mistranslation. A 'hime', what gets translated as princess, is actually lady of birth, not necessarily the daughter of a monarch, and ladies of a house held significant duties while the western interpretation of a princess doesn't, but I digress.) Her having to solve problems with a more puzzley game style and essentially commanding troops does fit her as a character better. I'm not sure a western audience will see it that way as we tend to get uppity when women don't do things the same way as men in media, but it by no means makes her weak if she isn't using a sword. She's always been about magic, wisdom, and will.
That being said, I loved her in Hyrule Warriors and I loved the rapier. I would unironically love a strategy game with her as the main character and as a champion unit. Like, give me hyrule warriors but it's Fire Emblem and I would day one that no question.

Imagine you played Pokemon gold, then after you beat the game it unlocked Kanto and as you go around getting Kanto gym badges you teach about Johto, with the game ending as you retire to Pallet Town as Professor Oak.

Ally dice made moving around the boards trivial and the stars being 10 coins made them too easy to obtain.
Two of my friends are huge mario party fans and when superstars came out and there was a decent mario party on switch they immedately sold super. Game is very bland.

I would not blame you for saying DKCR has no soul, but the other games have plenty.
I think what Coney meant by the modern DKC games having "no soul" is that they're sanitized compared to the Rareware trilogy.
DKCR & Tropical Freeze were made in an era where Nintendo was pumping out NSMB & Kirby Return to Dreamland. DKCR definitely feels like it falls in line with those games as a super squeaky clean return to form for a modern audience ( Then- Wii crowd ) while also trying to appeal to the oldschool fans who enjoyed the classics.
Coney does make me laugh, has less than 0 interest in anything that looks even remotely anime. (even though he's watching a game release schedule for a JAPANESE company.)

Since this direct was stated to be exclusively about the switch(because duh why wouldn't it be?) meaning yes Metroid Prime 4 Beyond is a switch game and likely the next console will be officially unveiled mid 2025.
