switched to this light, few months ago. Took it to a SIMS training and I actually had two suspects with weapons in both a dark and descent lit room turn their faces away from the light when I popped it on; I used the old 300 lumen streamlight before and I don't know if I ever had the same circumstance as that, but it impressed me enough and I am very happy with the HL.
Thank you for validating what I have discovered over the last several years, Im running 3 of the HL's on various handguns through out my house and have the protac railmount 2's on two of my long guns. My primary reasoning was that in the fire service, we have been using and abusing streamlights for over 20 years and I have carried them on my body in some form or another into fires, MVAs etc and have never had an issue with them. They are great lights and Im glad to see someone in the industry finally acknowledging that.
Aaron, I've been running the TLR1-HLs on my Glocks 22, 23, 19, Beretta 96, Colt 1911, AR-15 & 870 12ga. For 2-3 years. I ran a TLR1-S prior to those. The only issue I've had is powder burns on the lenses that clean off AMAZINGLY well with baby wipes. I read about a trick to reduce powder burns for exterior daytime training sessions is a light coat of Chap Stick prior to firing. Wipe it off at the end of the day and the powder sticks to the chap stick. NOTE: If you buy from auction site, make sure of what you're getting. Cheap knockoffs are out there and they won't deliver the quality. Thanks Aaron for another worthwhile vid.
I use FireClean or Reaper Solutions lube on mine. One little drop and smear it around keeps me gtg for at least a 1,000 round Ernest Langdon course, as that's the longest I've went thus far without cleaning it up. Afterwards just wipe off and reapply as you mentioned above. Good stuff.
The way this guy talks makes me have faith in society. Meaning he’s very articulate and actually uses good vocabulary. I always say people that don’t really swear and use descriptive words come off a lot smarter. (To me at least)
My department issues these to patrol and there have only been user malfunctions, namely trying to pry the battery compartment open. A few hundred lights on the street for a few years and they all work well.
😂 oh Aaron... just pictured some of the graffiti kids comin around the corner, and yer there smashing yer pistol into the pole... "hey, what's up?" - Aaron 😆😅😂
Great tip on the 10 tap. I use it at work and never new you could turn off the strobe. All of your stuff is very informative. Though as a former 2111 watching guns intentionally dropped makes my eye twitch 😎
I bought my surefire x300 last fall. it was my 1st weapon light. On black Friday I got TWO of these STREAMLIGHT TRL1-HLS for the cost of my one surefire. IMO, they are every bit as good or better for much less money. I'm done paying the surefire "tax".
I just slapped one of these on my PPQ M2 for use as a home defense gun. It already had Trijicon HDs on there, but I finally woke up to the realization that night sights are absolutely no replacement for a good WML.
Hopefully this wakes someone up at Surefire and they stop screwing around with wrist lights and phone lights and build us something with some more lumens!
Surefire is doing too much with other stuff. If that makes sense. I own 3 surefire weapon lights. My next will be this streamlight. I’ll keep my surefires. But from here on I’m switching.
Thanks for a thoroughly informative video. I’d been contemplating a WML for over a year, but big, global (& local) change helped make up my mind. Ordered mine after watching this and haven’t gotten it yet but feeling confident the TLR-1 HL will serve me well.
I used a Streamlight on my hardhat with my bunker gear. Damn good in a smoke filled environment. But I have two surefire lights that I use but not well.
As a mechanic my stream light at work has been dropped many times each week. Dropped in hot coolant, oil you name it. Works just as good as it did new. Stream light is a quality brand built for professionals.
thanks Aaron I run this light on a glock 19 and never thought to program 10 tap even though I did my handheld. I have accidently hit strobe while practicing but never again lol
have 2 and really like them. One of the lights the battery cover with the switch broke. they sent a replacement cover for free quickly. Nice customer service too.
It's very timely that you posted this because I have looking at this and the x300. I was really looking at the HL because of the cost but I was concerned about quality because I don't have much experience with streamlights. This gives me peace of mind.
The constant on is so natural for myself as a lefty. Mine is mounted on an FNX 45 Tactical and my support hand thumb just naturally rests right there at the paddle for a quick down switch motion.
I have the TLR-1 HL and the ProTac. I went with the ProTac for rifles because it’s a little brighter and reaches out a little farther and it has the pressure pad. But it’s big and heavy. The TLR-1 is basically as bright and the sell it with the option for a pressure pad. I’ll be using the TLR-1 with pressure pad from now on for long guns
If youll pay attention to production dates of these videos, his newer videos he still employs a Surefire. That kind of answers my biggest question. Haha
Awsome light very bright.just picked one up couple weeks ago. thanks for that durability test pretty impressive I thought it was done after the second drop.
The weak point on these lights is the plastic battery cap. I bought one for my father's home defense pistol. It sat in a safe completely unused for a few years. We went shooting together several months ago to test our guns. We shot maybe about 150 rounds through his pistol. And we noticed that somewhere along the line the plastic battery cap snapped in half from 9mm recoil + age. I Googled this issue, and it seems like it's pretty common. Streamlight sent him a new battery cap for free (which was cool since we bought it so long ago), but I personally don't trust these lights anymore.
I love my x300s (always been a SF fan boy)!but I went with the TLR1-HL because it looked better on my Glock 19x. I really like the toggle switch on the Streamlight’s compared to the Surefires and might switch a few out. Been interested in the TLR7.
Excellent review. I will be buying the tlr to go on my duty weapon. Also, I have watched your video on the grey ghost precision specter light and am considering buying one for home defense/ work. Would you recommend this rifle for these purposes?
Very nice review and I was actually trying to see how durable it is. Just received mine today. I've read reviews about the battery door breaking, but, it wasn't enough of a turnoff for me to not buy it.
I have the TLR1-HL on my EDC XTEN with just over 3k Norma spec rds fired. No issues. I prefer the toggle switch of it over the Surefire X300 Turbo on my tinker XTEN… my second XTEN is identical to my EDC, but NIB condition.
Great review I love my TLR1 and TLR1HL question: do you feel that a pronounced hot spot can draw the shooters eye focus toward the hot spot causing a tunnel vision effect that is detrimental to snap shot search techniques?
Terminal velocity isn't necessarily changed by added weight and more importantly air resistance isn't going to be a factor from a 9ft drop. The added mass however affects the amount of force required to stop the light when hitting the ground and thus adding a higher potential for damage.

Thanks for the great content.
Thank you Aaron for another great video! I have planned to get a tlr-1 HL and an accommodating holster for my edc for a while now. Is the tlr-1 HL long gun kit something that you would recommend? I have heard other channels suggest Not putting the tlr-1 HL on a rifle because it is their opinion that "the tlr-1 HL doesn't have enough Throw... that out past 50 yards you would have a very hard time with positive identification." Do you agree with that? If you haven't already, would you please please make a video about the lights that you recommend for rifles?
Hey Aaron, I was hoping for your professional opinion. I ended up throwing a TLR-1 HL on my Glock 19 along with an Agency Arms 417 comp. I’m also going to have it milled with the Agency Optics System (rear sight forward of optic). Unfortunately I’ve discovered that with the addition of the light, appendix carry is now incredibly uncomfortable for me. I’m a 5’10, 150lb man with a slim, athletic build. I find that the light digs into my thigh when I sit and also makes it nearly impossible for me to bend my knees, squat, or lean too sharply. I DONT want to run a TLR-6. It’s just not enough. A TLR-7 seems like nice middle ground. So two questions. Should I switch my setup to a Glock 19 with a tlr-7 (possibly with grip chop to 26 size), or do a polymer 80 Glock 26 build which has a rail section that can accommodate the TLR-7? I hope you’re doing well. Thanks for the great content.
I have 4 of these, 2 on pistols and 2 on AR’s. I’ll never own a Surefire until they decide to get real on their pricing. I’m not the federal government. My Streamlights have never failed and I know if they do, the company will take care of me. Plus USA made.
I have a few regular TLR-1 lights but I recently purchased the HL for my M9A3 and it's awesome. Also, will you be looking into the Enforce series of lights? Thanks

I have the red mil square Accupower. Maybe its just me because I wear glasses and don't have the best vision but I find the Mil hash reticle to be too fine for me to see them. Still love it because all my shooting is 300yds or less but part of me wishes I just got the BDC model. Hope that helps too.
WinstonArcher thanks! I appreciate the feedback. Yeah I was thinking of going with the red BDC. I was leaning towards the mil initially but this is gonna get mounted on a 12.5" Noveske SS barrel so I just want something that compliments the potential accuracy of the barrel & is still fast up close but where it's only a 12.5", I don't need it to touch anything out past 300.
Great video! Help me decide in a matter of minutes. Iv always liked how you went about doing videos and iv been following you on Instagram for a while so I tend to trust your judgement.
I’ve never owned a surefire light except for their new EDCL-T2 handheld but the only problem I’ve ever had with streamlight is the battery doors breaking when you go to change out the batteries. That stupid prices of aluminum flap breaks off and the door won’t stay on. I’ve broke two of the 3 I’ve owned. They should of made the whole thing out of metal.

Good job on the presentation. One of the most articulate presentation I seen. I was wondering why you do not like the "strobe" feature.
Candela is used in this context as candle power. I.g. 72000 candela is the equivalent to 72000 candles worth of light focused at a given spot.

Terminal velocity isn't necessarily changed by added weight and more importantly air resistance isn't going to be a factor from a 9ft drop. The added mass however affects the amount of force required to stop the light when hitting the ground and thus adding a higher potential for damage.
Would you say it's more comfortable to carry concealed with a shorter body than the Surefire, or does the greater width offset the reduced length?
TheBaxpin didn't notice a difference.
It is definitely for me and you just confirmed exactly why it is! great video brother👍
You probably won't see this on such an old video, but I think it might be useful to do a sand/debris test on lights. Especially pistol lights.
