  • FCisNotScience Host Janyce Boynton invited Susan Gerbic and Adrienne Hill to chat about Rapid Prompting Method as they watch the "penultimate" rapid prompting method video featuring Sue Finnes and Alex Hopwood of "Unlocking Voices" (RPM UK).
Rapid Prompting Method (RPM) is a form of Facilitated Communication (FC) in which individuals with complex communication needs are "supported" by a facilitator to "spell" using a plastic letter board or stencil. But, who is controlling the messages?
To date, there is no reliably controlled testing to prove proponent claims of independent communication. In fact, these tests show that facilitators, not their clients, are controlling the FC-generated messages. Organizations such as the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) have statements opposing its use, citing concerns about facilitator cuing, prompt dependency, lack of scientific evidence, lost opportunity and financial costs, and potential harms (including false allegations of abuse).
