Mate, you're just making things up. MTV unplugged started in 1989, well before Nirvana was even known. Many Grammys were won before any of the the famous Nirvana versions, Clapton being one of the most famous in 1992 which helped restore his tarnished reputation, and was a world wide huge record. Nirvana became famous for theirs starting in 1993, and their MTV unplugged was in 1994, but well after unplugged versions had peaked . This is from a Canadian TV show in 1995, where "stripped down" singles were performed, mainly because of the space for the audience.
