I didn't only unsubscribe to a lot of people on UA-cam but deleted Instagram, Snapchat for good, cause it is not only the kinda famous people/bloggers on UA-cam or instagram but also old friends or people you just kinda know and they either make you feel bad about yourself or your looks, or their posts make you mad, because you just don't share the same values. It really helped me . I am not on my phone anymore as much as I was and I feel a lot better. Also I don't feel the need to share everything on social media.

since i have became interested in veganism etc, i have unsubscribed from a lot of people that just did not share the same values as me. recently, in the past few weeks/months, i have unsubscribed from even more people. this is because i was still subscribed to people that i enjoyed watching because of their personality and content, even though they didnt share the same values as me. however, i unsubscribed from most of them now because i realised how much they consume and not only that, they consume those things from brands that are unethical and have poor quality clothing/products. i was disappointed. veganism has introduced me to so many different topics, issues and lifestyles like minimalism, zero waste/low impact, ethical buying, sustainability etc etc. im so glad to be aware of those things now and be one more person in this world that cares about this planet and its people.

Great tips!! Especially the wishlist one, that really helps getting it out of your mind and evaluate your true needs and wishes!
I have two additional things that help me in buying less stuff: I ask friends and family if they have the item I want to buy, so that I can see if I actually need or want it. For example, I may want to start to practice yoga. I can buy a new mat, but I can also borrow one first to see if I like yoga. That way, you don't spend money on something that you may not use, you prevent the 'guilty' feeling for spending the money and not using the product, and you also keep yourself from keeping the item just in case 'you are going to use it someday'.
Number two is to become aware of the 'ideal self' shopping. So for example, I may want to start drawing. My ideal self (that wants to be the best artist in the world) probably wants to buy the nicest paper, and lots of them. Same goes for pencils, and lots of other tools you hope will inspire you to start and/or maintain the hobby. So to become aware of this, is to ask myself: Why do I want to do it? What do I want to achieve? And if I do want to do it: Do I already have something I can use? In the case of drawing, I may have a pencil somewhere, or I could even use a pen. If not, then the next question would be: What are the essentials for me to start? Do I need a box full of pencils, or could I just buy (or borrow) one pencil and a small sketch book (or even just a few sheets of paper)?

I haven't impulsed shopped for years and I generally always think about my purchases on my wish list for a long time. But once I went to Birmingham for the weekend. I had such bad sleep the day before so when I arrived I was exhausted and I went to get a manicure. Somehow in my sleepiness the lady who did my nails managed to sell me £150 worth of nail varnishes! First of all I painted my nails maybe 2-3 times a year back then and today I do not even own nail varnishes because I never get around to use it. (I went back and returned everything but the top and base coat I got.) However, the other day I was reading about why we buy things we did not plan to and apparently one reason why many boxing day sales starts so early is that we are more likely to spend when we shop tired. So.. Never shop tired! Learn from my misstake. Also educated yourself on sales & marketing tactics companies use. Do not be lured in by 'deals' - as you say only buy what you really went to the store to get.

Miss Matti I recognise your spendthrift situation as that is exactly the sort of purchase I have been guilty of. In my case, however, it is because I find it difficult to say no to ‘hard sell’ because I have this annoying personality trait of wishing to please and be nice. At least you managed to take your stuff back and get your money back, so well done. I now try to avoid sales people at all costs and am learning to say a very firm but polite “no thank you” when I can’t avoid them. Mostly it is working!

Thank you so much for this refreshing content! I'm just now discovering the low-impact movement and it's such a wonderful change of mindset from this consumerist society in which we live. The biggest areas I've realized I have issues with are:
    1. Buying replacements before finishing what I already have (ESPECIALLY when it comes to skincare, candles, and office supplies!)
    2. Buying items just because they're on sale.
    3. Impulse online buys (mostly caused by using Pinterest/UA-cam/Amazon Prime too much).
Some things I'm going to ask myself moving forward before making purchases:
    1. Is this a need or a want?
    2. What is the long-term value of this purchase?
    3. Do I already own or have access to something that performs the same function? (if so, am I willing to give that item up, and is there a way to do so in a conscientious way [i.e. regift to a friend, donate]?) Do I really need another?
    4. What are the ethics behind how this item was sourced and created? What is its environmental impact?
    5. (When viewing sale items) Would I buy this at full price?

I love the tip about deleting apps (bye Etsy and eBay) - because if they’re only accessible via say, PC you will only remember them
when you actually need them and not just when you wanna kill time on the train. This year I set myself a slightly silly challenge of not buying any new underwear and socks and what no one tells you is that it’s SO satisfying to see things wear out properly. Like when you have a sock with two holes in it already and you know it has maybe 20, 30 more wears in it still, it’s just super satisfying to experience the real lifespan of things. ❤️

Wow! I have just come across your channel and I really connect with your message. While I'm not vegan, I do like vegan food (truthfully...I like food... full stop!) and I love the message you are promoting. May I also add that I think you are wonderfully individual, intelligent and pretty. I am so tired at looking at fashion clones in heavy make-up in my daily life. As a woman who is old enough to be your mum, may I add that when I was growing up, individuality was much more prevalent, self esteem was higher (generally) and we had nothing like the disposable income young people have today to spend so frivolously. I do believe we were happier. I was discussing this recently with my sister and we were laughing about the fact that a 'capsule wardrobe' wasn't even an option. Our wardrobes were mismatched capsules out of necessity! We didn't have that many clothes to start with and we creatively dyed, adjusted, altered, decorated, mended and swapped clothes with friends and family. We even wore our dad's old shirts...styled to suit our needs! I do believe that we were considerably more content if less 'cool' in the conventional sense.
Please keep your channel going. In as much as possible, I will direct young people in my life to your channel and that of other genuinely good influencers I come across. Your voices are so important and need to be heard. On a little aside, I agree with you that clutter is confusing and space is calming so let's rephrase empty space as 'positive space' and filled spaces as negative...filled spaces are no longer breathable but congested! No air flows through them!
    With much admiration and respect...

We moved to our own farm over a year ago and produced enough honey, fruits, vegetables, and meat to be able to last our family through the entire year. For goods we can not produce we purchase in bulk in compostable packaging, such as flours and sugars.

Thank you for your intelligent and helpful hints and for your excellent and sincere channel. Unfortunately I have been so disillusioned by some influencers who initially attracted me with their minimalist values, but then sadly they appeared through their success to get sucked into the marketing machine and were suddenly offering their own brands of items or providing links to others when I thought the idea was that we were supposed to be retraining ourselves from a buying habit. Most people in the west (including myself) have far more stuff than they could ever possibly need or outuse , especially where clothes are concerned, so there is in reality very little, apart from food, that we need to purchase on a regular basis. Thank you again for your wise content and for supporting those of us just beginning our minimalist journey. xx

Very useful tips. I am recently into Zero Waste and the first think I did was to unsubscribe from all youtube channels showing hauls, even if I liked the person. Another tip I have is to write down every single expense on each day, from the espresso at the bar to the electricity bill. This will really give an overview on what you spend and what you can do to reduce. For example, where I work there is a really nice cheap beauty shop and I used to pop around during lunchtime because there is basically nothing else in this area. Now, when the weather is fine I go strolling in a recently opened public park and I finally stopped buying endless lipsticks :)

Wow, that's a great tip to put money into your savings account instead of buying what you really really want. And you save money instead of buying shit no one needs as you said 😆😂💪 Thanks for all the other tips too ❤️

what really helps me is to ALWAYS try to pay cash. it makes me realise more how much i am spending and therefore think twice whether i actually need this or just want this.

I just give myself a really small budget each week, so that I can’t impulse buy. I usually try to live off £50, which is actually a lot considering I will only buy food. I usually have £20 left over, which will then carry on to the next week or put into a savings pot towards something I really do want.

I went through financial difficulty a few years back (and still have a pretty low income for where I live) so that tends to break the habit quite well! But I probably wouldn't recommend that to people 😂

An online savings account that is hard to get into is also good because usually, those accounts have high-interest rates. Just direct depositing even 1% of your income automatically into that invisible to your account can help you save so much money and having only what you need and a little fun money can help you curb spending.

I always ask a few questions before I buy like can I make this? Can I find this free from a friend or neighbor (check if your city has Freecycle)? What is the lifespan of this product?

In regards to online shopping - I always leave my wallet in my kitchen. It sounds weird but if I have to get up and walk downstairs to buy something it makes me think more about if it is worth it or not. I think that’s why using cash only helps for a lot of people. Because you have to hand over more physical money if you want something extra. Or you can’t buy it because you only took out enough money for your groceries and that is it.

I have another tip: Minimize your skincare routine. Use affordable, fragrance-free and bullshit ingredient free products. Get shampoo and conditioner from a hair salon - cost more, but last much, much longer, and you don't end up with ten different ones you don't really like (lesson learned.)

I use the tip to set a saving's goal a lot. Right now, I am saving to buy a car that I have wanted all my adult life, so when I am shopping and I see something I like, I hold it and ask myself if I want this or my car. My car almost always wins and I put the item back. lol Then I take the money I would have spent on the item and pop it into my piggy bank.

Can you talk about how to buy less while traveling? I travel a lot and always find myself spending money on clothing and other items that are impulse buys when I'm traveling because I can't get them where I live, I'm afraid of missing out on them, or even just feel that they are part of the experience of being in that foreign place. Realistically I know it's not a necessary part of experiencing the place but it's hard to convince myself in the moment... Any tips?

I strongly dislike commercials and advertisements, so I have addblockers and a no/no sticker at the front door to show I don't want to receive any advertisement stuff. I also don't watch television. Funny enough, we buy much less stuff then other people around us. It just goes naturally like that if you aren't bombarded with 'buy this, feel better' advertising all the time.

The thing that gets me about shopping is that I genuinely enjoy it. I kind of get that “high” when buying things. I haven’t really found anything to substitute it.

    • @XX-rs8uw
      @XX-rs8uw 6 років тому

HayleyTief Start with thinking about why you shop and how much you already have. If you have ten bags, why do you buy the eleventh? And if you have ten bags, what's the difference between wanting, buying and needing another one? Also women tend to do more impuls buys before their period. Don't hit the shops then also helps
