I love my steel straws, since the strokes, I require a straw to prevent choking and it is nice to know I am not adding tons of plastic straws to the environment.

My no 1 low waste purchase is probably my cavernous waterproof backpack. It's not made of sustainable materials but is incredibly well made and I think it'll have a very long life. I carry more weight on a daily basis than I did when I lived less consciously (glass reusable coffee cup, water bottle, homemade snacks, groceries that have to be carried around multiple shops that stock different packaging-free or more sustainable products - no one stop supermarket shop any more), so I'm glad I decided to buy something large, sturdy and durable.

Love you immy! I agree 100% on the produce bags, I was buying 5-8 oranges every time I went to the store as they are in season now and I love them but they roll all around and the grocery clerks would have to chase them around the belt so I bought a $3.50 organic cotton bag that is grown and made in the USA where I live and it has been so so so useful! I’m lucky enough I can refill shampoo bottles and conditioner bottles as well near me and it is such a luxury! I was using a bar of soap before and I didn’t like how my hair felt afterwards and now i can choose between brands and there’s even some specialty care items available in bulk!

Some of my favourite essentials are items I started to use long before I ever heard of the term "Zero Waste." More than eleven years ago, I started to cloth diaper my oldest, and now I am using those same diapers for my younger child. I really enjoyed using them. A year after I started to cloth diaper, I looked for the equivalent for me: cloth pads. They are not the "organic" kind that they have nowadays, but at the time, this was the best I could find, and I really liked them. A couple of years ago, still before ever hearing of the term "zero waste" I found produce bags for the first time, and thought it was a really great idea, so I started to use them. Add to that glass jars for storing things, and all those are my "favourites." Another thing I enjoy purchasing is unpackaged soap. I just really enjoy their scents, and choosing them based on the smells I like.

If you go to the Keepcup website, you can purchase any replacement part, I replaced my lid ( kept the center thingy) after it started to leak, and now it’s good as new. Really worth it as getting coffee down my tops was getting old.
    I think it was about £4 p+p.

Love these tips! I’ve been using my Diva Cup for 6 years now, and in the summer I made myself cloth pads (upcycle broken umbrellas to have the leakproof layer!). I do have a keepcup and I agree that it’s not the best choice, I still have a Contigo leakproof travel mug I got years ago and use that more often instead.
Produce bags are amazing too. I ordered from a local Etsy and they’re so handy to replace those annoying flimsy bags that you’d never be able to reuse even if you wanted to.

I love your channel and your honest and thoughtful process on what is low-waste. To often we get bombarded with this “buy this new shiny lowwasteecothingymagog” and the impulse is hard to resist because of the endorphine reward that buying gives you. Resisting this instant gratification is what i learned also from Antony at breakthetwitch. He calls it “false first steps”... we all stumble and fall sometimes with that: thank you for being honest about it ànd for not bombarding us with affiliate links that trigger this process even more.

I've used reusable pads for nearly a year and they are BRILLIANT! Totally love them, never leaked, but do beware of them moving, as then you could have an accident. They're not perfect for everything, in my case cycling (a bit bulky) and exercising in general (they move), made me try the cup. Now I alternate between the two.. super happy, and don't see myself going back

@@Alesanascreamokid Mine don't have the barrier material all the way to the sides, so when it gets "full" and doesn't absorb any more, it will start leaking from the sides. But that starts after using one for several hours. A normal plastic one would become uncomfortable earlier, so if you keep the same phase in changing them as you normally would, there's no problem. Perhaps if your first day is heavier, you would like to use the long ones for that.
But I don't think they are bulky at all, perhaps there are differences between brands, and for example, how wide the barrier piece is inside. Mine feel like I'm just wearing a bit more clothes.

Great video! I find your channel very useful, especially since you focus on the low waste aspect of an eco-friendly life(style). This appeals to me as my country doesn't have all the options for zero-waste, i.e. no bulk stores.
My best buys are probably the reusable metal straw I purchased for my kids (I don't use them except for a trip to the theatre); reusable cotton make up pads; bee's wax wraps instead of cling-film, and sewing cotton produce bags from old sheets. TheseI use everytime I go food shopping along with totes (and get a llt of odd looks 🤣).
I also became very conscious of anything I buy, whether it's made of natural materials or not. Recently we changed out several area rugs and I opted for a wee bit more expensive but wool ones instead.
    Slowly, I am getting there.

Love seeing what your suggestions are for a zero waste or low waste life. For me I stopped buying all commercial cleaners and now only use baking soda, vinegar and lemon. Traded cling film for bees wax paper. Also, stopped buying commercial deodorants as they typically come in plastic tubes and now use either essential oils, salt stick or ones that are natural ingredients in small glass jars.

I love my glass keep cup! Mine hasn't leaked at all (only had it for couple of months so it might in the future but for now it's great) and I love the personalised colours I picked. I purchased mine so that I could use my metal coffee flask less as I didn't enjoy the metallic taste it gave my coffee. I find myself using my keep cup around the house as it's nice to know I can just stick the lid on and take it with me if I go out. I'm so happy with the reusable pads I bought recently : cheaper ones were a nightmare to clean, even if they were made of organic cotton, I had to eventually throw them away because of all the stains -_- I had to clean them very agressively and they rapidly began to feel very uncomfortable... Now I have more expensive ones, but it has been a great buy ! They are very easy to clean, no nasty stains, I can clean them very quickly and gently, they are very comfortable and they dry very well after cleaning too. What helped my choice ? I asked someone who already tried different brands, and got to use them for months to see if they were solid in the long run. Best advice ever. My only regret is that before all this, I had bought a menstrual cup, but it must have been the wrong size : it was always leaking and I even hurt myself one time... and even if you don't use it a lot, it's impossible to donate it, so it was just a waste of money :/ I only earn minimum wage so that was pretty disappointing

1: reusable razor, sugar wax at home is also good and can be kept in jars then reheated but downsides are that it can burn and be tricky to use.
    2. Reusable coffee cup, I personally drink tea from a 1L glass jar and just refill this twice daily. I use the same jar every day and just rinse/clean it when needed.
    3. Paper straws instead of plastic for parties or personal use but aim for bamboo straws and avoid plastic
    4. Menstrual cup, personally haven’t used it yet don’t want to invest when I’m not ready but looking to figure out a sustainable alternative to using pads as it makes me feels so guilty.
    5. Reusable produce bags; you can make your own if they’re a bit pricey out of linen, cotton or hemp fabric available in fabric stores or online even from old clothes.
    6. Shampoo and conditioner bars Güd also available on Etsy from independent sellers
    7. Reusable covers instead of plastic wrap

Hi Immy! Firstly, I love your channel and content. It is very inspiring and useful, pluss it's great that you have a grounded approach to it all - if we all try our best we'll accomplish a lot 😊
Q: I was wondering though if you have any tips to LW bike maintenance? A quick search around the internet didn't reveal anything and I noticed you bike a bit. So far my local ZW community is recommending dishwashing soap and old rags (to throw out bc of the oil) for washing and a type of bike oil that is very sparce in use.

Hi!!! curly hair here!! YES!! please update hair routine!! What kind/brand of shampoo have you found best for u? How often do you wash your hair?? so far I just slowly reduced my hair washing to twice a week, with regular shampoo, and it did made my hair less greasy! But I found my curls only look good when I wash them... To style I use olive oil, but it doesn't work as well as the chemical products I used. I tried diy linden seed gel but didn't work... Any tips!!??

I’m not the only one who had a leaky keep cup! Haha. The leaky cup drove me insane, I gave it to a friend who didn’t have any cups due to roommate breaking all of his glassware.
I personally love my tea steeper I use at work for my afternoon tea and my reusable baking pan liners.

Thanks for another great video. My faves are my bamboo toothbrush for myself and two children. Menstrual cup. Shampoo Bar. Interested to hear people's thoughts on Aluminium foil. It is 100% recyclable. I know to reduce use comes first.... is the only problem with aluminum the costs to the environment with the production (and then the recycling production)??
Immy, do you own a roll of Aluminium foil?

How do you dispose of your razor blades? Where I live the blades aren’t recyclable and I even have to put them in a cardboard box and tape them shut before they’re allowed in the garbage.

I'm really interested in switching to a stainless steel safety razor. I was wondering how you dispose of the blades though and how often you change them? I'm not entirely sure what to do about them because I can't find any information on my area and whether or not they are recyclable or not... I love my Keep Cup and menstrual cup! :)

I've been using a safety razor for a few years now. I bought a "blade bank" but you can also use a can or something. I toss the blades in there (it takes FOREVER to fill up) tape it up real good so nothing can escape and throw it away. Recycling blades can be very dangerous so most companies dont do it. You could always ask a pharmacy or biohazard waste management company near you though~

I don't really get along with my menstrual cup and I don't want to keep buying other ones. Still trying to work this one out.
Does the razor also work for sensitive skin? I get irritated quite easily. I really enjoy getting my coffee to stay. Kinda forces you to slow down for a bit.

I must have really dark hairs cause 10 mins is not enough for me cause i always have to look real close so i dont miss a dark hair that's gonna bug me for the rest of the day.

Katlin Meyer try soaking your cup in boiling water! Mine was very stiff and I literally couldn’t walk without feeling irritation, and after soaking/ boiling it a couple of time it became more pliable and I forget I have it in until it’s time to empty it

    • @PLopez-bs5xs

      Hi Katlin,
They can be tricky... There's a couple of UA-cam channels that were super helpful for me, particularly "precious stars pads".
Another thing which made the whole difference for me (once you have the right cup...), make sure, during insertion, the fold goes to the "back" (so floor or bottom depending on your position). Once I discovered this I stopped leaking...!

    • @juliakercsmar6587
      @juliakercsmar6587 5 років тому

For a while a few years ago i was seriously thinking about getting a hysterectomy later on in life. Probably because i've had a very bad experience with PMS and cramps and vomiting and stuff. And at the time i was very antimeds. I refused to take anything other than a a few vitamins and a fever med syrup. And so since i wasn't medicated for the worst of it, i felt that way. Thinking one ill probably adopt if i want children and that if periods are debilitating me what would i be doing for 9 months and the birth i would probably die nit even speaking of the recivery in my muscles down there. So what ever i am now medicated for it and dont think about it anymore.

I nearly always reuse glass containers from food (like jam jars or stuff like that). I use them either for storage or as smoothie containers. I make a smoothie and it makes like 3 to 4 portions for the whole week. Why buy expensive ass masion jars if you can just use what you already own. And if you would paint over the lid, noone will ever be able to tell that you use that tomate sauce jar as a smoothie container
