I can't seem to get enough of Alan Cumming's portrayal of Emcee, its by far my favorite. I love this. So creepy and sleazy.. and comical. Why won't someone cast him as the Joker already? I mean he was Loki and Emcee, he's pretty much done the role already. >.>
I was in college when the CABARET movie was released. I was nuts about it, and never thought anyone could BE the Emcee but Joel Grey. Alan...proved me wrong. When I saw it on Broadway he had left already. He's come back. How I'd adore to see him on stage doing this role. He is amazing!
Agree. I never thought anyone else could equal Joel. Lately, I was thinking about the movie and looking at clips- some of the Alan clips came up. In the comments I saw how fiercely people loved his interpretation of Emcee. So I started watching all the Alan clips. At this point, I feel they both made the role their own and they both did a great job.
Joel and Liza: Ooooh look how rich and ridiculous we are! Alan: Anyone will do anything, and I do mean ANYTHING, for money. And I'm gonna prove it to you. Two completely different approaches to this song, and both are brilliant in two completely different ways.
I felt like we were maybe supposed to just intuit the purpose of the inclusion of this song from the Joel duet. But this makes its inclusion more clear. Both Capitalism and Desperation help clear the way for Fascism.
I think it's kind of funny how the original idea for the character that started on Broadway was Joel Gray's version. But they threw in Alan Cummings after the movie version came out, and he became the character that is still performed today.
Alan Cumming is so damn hot in a sort of creepy way. I mean, with all this make up on his face and red lipstick on his lips... *wwww* I completely fell in love with his portraial of Emcee, even more than Joel Grey's. I think Alan's Emcee is even more inhinibited and trashy. I'm watching his performaces tons of times per day and feel like it's never enough. * I'm in looooove*
Joel Grey could never have done what Alan Cumming does. Grey's performance was sanitized for the movie-going audience (and even then, it was regarded as risqué).
He mentioned in his memoir that he was struggling with an eating disorder around this time, and you can definitely see the effects at 3:11 when he lifts up the briefcase.
often as a way to remain very slim, with diets which often are very poorly balanced in nutritional value - anti-nutrient content of greens and nightshades also being a bane for many even if all vitamin needs are covered. the dogma is also so rigid that due to empathy/guilt for animals and horror of production of eggs, dairy and obvi meat in high production centres trumps the ability to then reason that for many pure veganism can become a cause for illnesses -but they are often accompanied with a very slimmed figure so becomes just another way of disordered eating
That's not terribly surprising. I'd bet the pressure to maintain his hard/wiry physique and have it be front and centre on stage every single day was.. pretty intense.
@@moocowtoyou Veganism is not a cause for illness and a perfectly reasonable choice. If you have some basic knowledge about nutrition it can be very healthy and prevent heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes.
Ok. So I never would have thought anyone could equal Joel Grey. But I came across this a couple of weeks ago and now I'm watching all Alan clips as Emcee. I see why he was loved for this role. At this point, I feel that they both made the role their own and they both did a GREAT job.
Wash You're totally right! Wake up Hollywood! I'm quite suprised that he has such a little fame. I mean, for the kind of actor he is he's not well known enough.
Really? Where have you been? He is actually very well known. He was a major character on a popular TV show for years and he has been in many Broadway shows. A lot of actors prefer live theater over doing film.
Even though this show is a very cautionary tale about not being complacent with your surroundings and involves a lot of Nazism I actually love this song.
I love Alan's rendition of Emcee for this, however there is a part of me who would love to see him doing it as a duet with the same energy. The echoing parts with Joel really scratch an itch in my brain and I'd love to hear that with Alan's!
I suppose they simply chose to include it instead of "Sitting Pretty" in the musical revival Without it being a duet. Considering it was written to be one, it's well done
Mein Herr was also written by Kander and Ebb for the movie. It has now become a staple of all Cabaret productions. They dropped Don't Tell Mama to put Mein Herr in. Don;t Tell Mama Was also a good number.

Surely the Emcee is one of the most challenging roles in musical theatre.
Absolutely, and Alan is perfect in the role.
not even vocally although it does need some flexibility there, its just the sheer intensity of performance required in the acting
Joel and Liza: Ooooh look how rich and ridiculous we are!
Alan: Anyone will do anything, and I do mean ANYTHING, for money. And I'm gonna prove it to you.
