My great grandpa's brother-in-law fought in the Bulge (and the rest of the European theater as part of Patton's 3rd army). I've talked to his daughter about it, and she said he always avoided talking about it as it was so traumatic. He was interviewed in the 90s by the local New Salem, ND newspaper about it, and one major point to note is that he said by the end of it only around 30 of his original company-mates has survived.

One thing I don’t feel that’s properly represented is the trees, they were one of the most deadly parts of the bulge because every time artillery would hit the forest and a tree branch broke it would shatter into small razor sharp twigs that would impale allied forces. And while it might not seem all to bad these twigs that are sharp as a knife and flying at 400 mph they kill as fast as a bullet. But this is something that a lot of games and movies will miss as it isn’t exactly the first thing that would come to mind.

It was more of a plot device and one of the weaker moments in an otherwise enjoyable campaign. But in fairness to the actual historical accuracy, allowing a German advance would have put many more lives in danger of encirclement as that was the goal of the offensive and would have at least derailed the advance in the West. Subsequently this would have likely resulted in a much larger East Germany as the Soviets would have had a massive lead so ironically winning this battle would have harmed the German people much more in the long run

    1. 1:10 to 1:45: Anyone whose been to Bastogne and the Ardennes knows how compact the trees are in the forest are. They aren't large and spaced out like they are in this. They're slim and tall. Also, this forest seem to be modeled off an North American or Southern German mountain forest, not the Ardennes. The Ardennes near Foy and Bastogne are rolling hills; there are not (many) large rock formations every 30 feet. The forest is relatively flat in comparison to most regions in Europe. The developers should have just googled pictures of Bastogne or Bois Jacques Foxholes for inspiration. 3/10.
    2. 2:31 to 3:00: The way the character walks across the ice and snow effortlessly is kind of funny watching. Anyone whose ever been in the military and done training in the snow will tell you that walking around like that and not waddling at all is nearly impossible. Especially when carrying boxes of ammo, E-tools, an eight pound rifle and standard infantry loadout. The animation is probably hard to recreate in a video game; rendering that texture to simulate the reality of walking in slush and mud while it's sub zero celsius is probably the last thing developers worry about. 6/10.
    3. 4:07 to 4:44: When taking indirect fire, it's standard for a soldiers to immediately drop to the ground and make themselves small as possible, that way shrapnel and debris doesn't wound or kill them. Seeing all the soldiers run about to their foxholes is possible happenstance - but directly goes against training, and could likely happen to inexperienced, cocky, or stupid soldiers. It's kind of silly to hear them yell, "Get your heads down!" as they all sprint around to their foxholes, like which one do you want? To get down? Or to get into the fighting position? 4/10.
    4. 0:38, 5:07, 20:35: I'll give these instances brownie points. This is realistic to me. The way to junior soldiers act around the Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) is accurate. A bit of resentment, but will still follow directives - even if with some protest. The way they constantly say, "Yes Sergeant." "No Sergeant." "Sergeant...?" when addressing them is real to me. This shows the soldiers, while not fond of their NCO, still respect his rank and display basic customs and courtesy. Additionally, Corporals are NCOs, and some junior soldiers don't give them enough respect because they're not matured or given the same paygrade as a Sergeant or Staff Sergeant. Often times, Corporals are treated like NCOs by their superiors and simeltaiously like privates and are given constant objection from other junior soldiers - sometimes outright disobedience, so big daddy NCO has to come in and fuck everyone up to get things done. 10/10.
    5. 14:45, 17:03: The Browning M1919 Machine Gun has a much high rate of fire, probably around 400-500 rounds per minute. The game's varient is being fired at around 240 rounds a minute in cyclic fire (holding down the trigger until ammo is gone). To give comparison, it's peer, the MG42, fires over 1,000 rounds per minute - making it sounds scary as fuck, but prone to overheating and constant barely changes, even when fired in bursts, but I digress. 6/10.
    6. 15:20: Those Shermans breaking cover to move into the middle of the valley seems odd to me, but not unreasonable. Afterall, tanks, especially Shermans, are designed to support infantry in direct fire combat. What seems more unrealistic to me is (at 15:39) the tanks turning their hull a full 90 degrees opposite of the enemy to move, completely exposing their second weakest side. After seeing the first tank get blown up, the other tank commanders *should* realize that the enemy is equipped with anti-armor weapons and should use more caution. Real tank commanders would wait until the threat of anti-tank is gone to push laterally with the forward line of troops. Besdes where they move to is not warranted, and the developers probably just wanted to the tanks to move around to immerse the player. 5/10.
    7. 16:25: Again with the tanks. The fact the commander/turrent gunner (can't really tell), isn't ordering the drive to reposition the tank while there is still no enemy armor present baffles me. They know which direction the enemy is facing, why isn't the tank moving their frontal hull to face the direction of known enemy troops? C'mon developers - we all saw Fury (2016) get shit on by armchair and professional historians for armor fallacies and misjudgments. Granted, that's a movie, and this is a video - so realism is the last thing to try and accomplish beyond story and world immersion. It is possible the tanks didn't see the enemy armor until it was too late, but it's off that they would position themselves like that in the first place. 5/10
I get it - it's a video game. But I hope these bullets help illustrate a more realistic vision of what the battle might have looked like, to include some insights on small unit tactics and weaponry. Overall I'd give the mission a D+ ON REALISM. Gameplay looks fun. It's impressive visually but misses the actuality of the landscape, having been to Bastogne, Foy, Clervaux, and Gouvy, it pulled me out. The character interactions feel real; weapons, uniforms, and tanks look realistic, but fall short in how they execute actual combat roles. But like I said, it's a video game. If you're looking to Call of Duty to base your interpretation of war, especially World War 2, correct yourself. Read books, watch documentaries and interviews of veterans, and if you can afford it - travel to these places. Belgium is amazing and rich with history.
