Just amazing how much time they spent on aircraft and ship models, graphics, then turn around and completely ignore anything close to realistic SBD Dauntless operations, formations, flight and damage models, etc.

Why would one of the pilots say, "Punching out?" It's a term that means using the ejection seat. Planes in this era didn't have ejection seats. In fact, ejection seats weren't common until after the end of WW2 and the jet age because as aircrafts were getting faster and flying higher, you needed and ejection seat to "punch you out" of the way of the aircraft when you bailed.
It reminds me of hopping into SW Squadrons, which I played for all of 10 minutes and never bothered coming back to it. You can only score so many kills before you feel like there's not really any skill involved, let alone realism.
I like how there is a layer of cloud underneath the formation and they can't even see the ships, but the AA gunners on the ships can see through the clouds at tiny little planes and shoot down half the squadron.
it's easier to see a plane in the clouds from the ground than it is to see through the clouds from above it's the difference in reflectiveness from the sunlight on top of the clouds penetrating through creating a shadow effect on the bottom and the plane not being a cloud easily being separated from the two by sight
as a military history nerd, I have consumed countless media around this battle, and never has a segment been as immersive and real feeling as this gameplay footage. stunning piece of art.

Who are you trying to fool? 1) Since when did the SBD Dauntless dive bomber have unlimited ammo and went on prolonged dogfights with the A6-M Zero fighter. 2) What kind of admiral would set the ships of his battle fleet so close to each other? Word of advice, ditch the "realistic" tag. There's nothing realistic in this video.
These is not a Brewster Buffalo. It’s an SBD Slow But Deadly. No way this would be getting the upper hand on a zero particularly since it had twin machine gun firing forward. And twin 30s in the rear. Zeros had twin 7.7 and 20mm cannons all firing forward but would explode or catch fire with the first tracer that hit the fuel tank.
It looks very pretty but I’m getting the pirate disaster vibe from this. A 22 year old game is still one of the best out there - IL2 Sturmovic..decades ago I couldn’t wait to see what would be available…instead everything is garbage. It’s like there’s no people able to put their dream out instead we’ve got all these b.s. things created by committees. (Movies, games, music. Hollow trash) The most important thing to them is how much money can this make not how much fun can this be?
I used to play IL-2 Sturmovic on my PC for years with a group of friends, even made and hosted a few maps. There was no better feeling than making a successful landing when you're shot up, leaking fuel badly, flaps are malfunctioning, and your engine is grinding loudly.
I loved flying the yak's. Talk about realistic, and difficult to learn! Forget to adjust anything in a fight an youre done! Greatest game ever! Coarsairs in the pacific version were amazing
If you haven't already check out DCS (Digital Combat Simulator). The flight models are gorgeous and painstakingly detailed to be realistic. Their focus is definitely modern(ish) jets, but they have lots of unbelievably good models of older planes. I enjoyed IL2, but once I found DCS it's hard to enjoy anything else.
It's because of the lack of realism in CoD games that I haven't bought or played one for years. The shooter is nearly always invincible, tanks, planes that have limitless ammo, and miraculously never suffer any major damage when hit by shells, or numerous bullets. For me the best game ever in this Franchise was CoD 2 - The Big Red One on PS2, which should have been remastered for both the PS3 and the PS4. Sad that the producers/developers don't bother about realism, because they know that real fans of the Franchise will continue to buy the games and they will still pocket big fat profits. As long as that continues the fans don't count, just the pounds and dollars they continue to shell out.
Notice that the Wildcat fighter in the hanger had the nose of a Hellcat F4F's is noticeably shorter and stubbier IRL , the cruiser seen as they take off didn't have an aft turret , even looked like a helipad there . Maybe it'll be fun anyway

In fact, this is a typical and ordinary view of people from the gaming and film industry - war. Nothing realistic or close to reality, but everything explodes, falls, and flies beautifully. I laughed for a very long time at the air battle between the SBD aircraft and one of the best maneuverable fighters of the Second World War, the A5M Zero.
Apparently Lt. Stanley Vejtasa claimed 3 zeroes in a single CAP in his Dauntless. Not just that, but according to Navy records the SBD attained a positive kill to death ratio (meaning it killed more enemy aircraft than it was shot down)

Graphics look great. Gameplay looks too arcade mode. How many zeros flew in front of you and slowed down? Wildcats in a turn fight with zeros got killed.
Doesn't make sense, who started his plane ? Did the ground crew start the plane and then just fucked off with no one at the controls ? Does the plane start himself ? Why is he running on a deck with running engines and spinnig props ? There's so many questions 😂 running full power with the parking brake on ? Doesn't the aircraft have toe brakes ? What about the p factor from running on full power ? No radial engine aircraft that big uses full power for take off ? He launches off the deck like an F-18 of the catapult😂
I wish they would do a ww2 rpg game where you pick what unit you want to join between airborn, infantry, armored, and navy. Then you fight with that character until you die
They did. Warbirds. Flt Sim PC Game. MMSim. Join a WW2 Axis or Allied squad...real people with coms etc...... Practice and have a massive role play simulating some aspect of WW2 like Battle of Britain etc.... if you die your done for the night. It was called S3 or Squad Select Series. Everything was scored by the PC and based on the scores you have a winner. Your stats are also tracked and logged. Unfortunately guys got older and the game died out. It's nothing like it was......

They slammed into each other all the time, sometimes even on purpose. But this is not at all how this would have gone like it did in this game. There is some real footage of actual ww2 dogfights out there. Also lots of documentaries with animations that have a more accurate portrayal.
Cod flying had always felt like your driving a 20 year old Van . You know it won't roll over and it handles like shit. But it will let you trudge along. Like it's been years and each game they seem chill to throw you back in to the Same van just different graphics.

During the later part of the war the American carriers actually did use catapults for launch assist. This was not till the Essex class came in tho.
