How to Analyze a Poem | Close Reading Poetry for Beginners

In the previous video, we explored how verse poetry is a special mode of literature that is regulated by unique forms of punctuation. It’s a mode of communication that is vivid, imagistic, and suggestive. A poem is not a riddle to be solved. A poem is not something that can be paraphrased. A poem does not always contain a moral or “message.” A poem is not hiding some “deeper meaning” from you. A poem is not something that can be explained by a summary. A poem must be experienced on its own terms. And close reading is an important part of that experience.
