I just noticed you said " No philosopher would be satisfied with the poetic treatment of any ideas." I kindly beg to differ, for I am a philosopher and a poet, and I am satisfied to posit my ideas on such matters in the poetic form. But I am a contemporary poet, with a passion for Ancient poetry and the not so ancient, as in the turn of the Century.

Dear Dr. Walker, Let me say how delighted I am to have discovered you today! I am a poet throughout my lifetime. But, in the past 2 yrs, I've become serious about it, as I began posting them on Facebook, and was astonished at the profound effect they would have on my friends. I was born in Central Penna, and in my early life, poetry was mandatory in my schooling which I had to memorize. Not only there but Sunday School, memorization of Bible poetry was expected. I began writing stories too about the 8th grade...After raising my family and now in my rietirement, I have the luxury to be able to pursue this passion. A few have compared me to Emily Dickinson, but I never really saw this in myself. What I have learned is Poetry is the Voice of the Soul, an extraordinary gift that seems to have called me early. And when the poem arises, there is something akin to an electrical charge in me that fires and I have a mental image just prior to the words which follow. It all happens with almost no effort or thinking on my part. It flows out of me in one continuous stream of consciousness as I trust intuitively, for each word to follow. I am so grateful for your channel and have been praying for God to guide me to something to support the work I'm now engaged in. Thank you Sir, I subscribed and I shall return often! Sincerely Philene Alvarado. I just began my poetry channel and I have so much to learn about creating the videos. I have a few recitals of my original poems "The Enchanted Poet." and am working on improving with each new one I do.

Wedding Sonnet From pledges concord true souls be married, Aft false impediments confounded be! Where love's golden rings in honour carried, Emblazon those bound now to Family! So two star'd lovers kiss at eyes ascent, Made ardent by love's joy for each other, Which flows with glasses raise to now augment, A revelry of Belles with Beau's cover! What Fair surpassing fair can excel this, This loving scene of possessing gladness? This summer fate made Summer by love's bliss, This lovers knot held tight in happiness! Thus by hearts giving and receiving oath, Is love sworn won and sworn is Love to both! By Barry Bradshaigh Blackpool U.K

Perhaps another genius can FINALLY do a modern translation without any loss to the exquisite fusion of sound and sense. Perhaps there is ALREADY an incredible translation of this matchless poem in a another language, maybe bengali armenian georgian ukrainian uzbek swahili hindi or even zulu I can only imagine this poem in russian in turkish in spanish , some of the most mellifluous of languages. As you said this poem clearly is Gray's gift to the world , How poor the poetry addict who can only thrill to the beauties of one language alone. Anyone who has thrilled to the Psalms in Hebrew, or Lorca in Spanish or especially Pushkin in Russian will fully understand my sympathy for all monolingual lovers of great literature,

I think it's about time the study of English literature begins to open up to the rest of the world as well. Instead of just the UK. US, Canada, etc., people publish English books around the world now, even if they live in countries where English isn't the native language. I feel like they should start getting included (if they're good enough). English has, by now, become the only true world language.

The solution is simple: When you start studying literature, start with the canon and use it as a map, but make sure to take breaks from it every now and then to read whatever piques your interest. After you are done with the canon, read whatever!

Thank you for making this video. This is probably my favorite poem, and I learned so much from you about the meter, composition, and self-reference through repeated phrasing (especially the pin 🤯). I was a bit sad for you to have glossed over the famous line, "Do I dare to eat a peach?" Apart from the obvious interpretations (Prufrock's lack of spontaneity; that as we age, we stop savoring life; and the sexual innuendo), when watching your video I noticed the reuse of "Do I dare." Previously he was indecisive about *disturbing the universe,* but now he can't even work up the courage to eat a peach! I would have loved to hear your thoughts on "coffee spoons", too. For me, it's dissonant with "there will be time," just like his bald spot. I can just see him taking coffee out of the tin every day, *knowing* less is left, but not able to observe and appreciate that fact until it runs low. Like an hourglass. That is *exactly* how I experienced aging as a kid, teen, young adult, and now approaching mid-life. This poem ages like wine.

An exploration of the major writers of the Anglosphere outside of Britain and the USA. Here are some of the most influential writers of the last couple of centuries (including a few of the most important contemporary writers). In the early 20th century, Irish writers were responsible for many of the greatest examples of Modernist literature - including four Nobel laureates: WB Yeats, GB Shaw, JM Synge, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, Sean O’Casey, Brendan Behan. You did mention Séamas Heaney, but other major Irish literary giants include Jonathon Swift, Oliver Goldsmith, William Congreve, Oscar Wilde, CS Lewis, Roddy Doyle, Maeve Binchy and Colm Tóibín. Alan Paton and JM Coetzee are probably the best known literary giants from South Africa. (Bryce Courtney could by considered a popular, major ‘South African-Australian’ novelist these days.) From Australia and New Zealand, there are Henry Lawson, AB Paterson, Patrick White, Christina Stead, Katherine Mansfield, Mike’s Franklin, Ruth Park, Randolph Stowe, Bruce Dawe, Kenneth Slessor, Judith Wright,Janet Frame and Colleen McCullough. Thomas Keneally, Tim Winton, Peter Carey and Christos Tsolkas are probably the most important living writers. From India and the subcontinent, there’s Salman Rushdie, Sarojini Naidu, Mulk Raj Anand, Vikram Seth, Arundhati Roy, RK Narayan and Raja Rao.
