  • Manual grinding has exploded in popularity in the last five years, with dozens of premium hand grinder options on the market now that rival or best some of our favorite electric grinders. Of course, with so many models to choose from, it can be daunting to compare the features and benefits of each - and that's where we come in. As we encounter, test, and use new hand grinders (and add some to our catalog!), we take copious notes on how they all stack up.
    This video takes a look at some of the most popular premium hand grinders available today. Steve will walk you through each model, grouped by brand, and give you a sense of where each one might be placed among the rest. We cover features, best use cases, strengths and weaknesses, all so you can rest easier when it comes to shopping for the best grinder for you.

    Very informative video. I just purchased the Kinu M47 Phoenix. It will be paired with my EMC Casa V. This is what I was looking for, a grinder that would give me great espresso shots without the $600 price tag of electric grinders. I don't mind the manual work and actually think it will be fun and more engaging than an electric grinder. I cant wait for it to get here and start making good cappuccinos. Thank you for the video. Aslo if you can make a video showing the kind of shots you can pull through the Kinu M47 Phoenix that would be great!

    French press and occasional V60 brewer here. Such a useful video! I just bought a Lido 3 from you guys and I'm amazed at the built quality and the consistency of the grinds. (This is after years of using a lower quality Porlex grinder, which I understand is similar in quality to that Hario.) The difference really is impressive. And I really did want a larger capacity, so the Lido range was perfect. However, two things should be noted. 1) The adjustment mechanism is a bit fiddly. The included instructions help - you can tell they were written by an engineer! 2) As I assume with any move from lower-quality to higher-quality, suddenly the process becomes less forgiving with the higher expectations and lower variance in the grind size. The price of quality! One thing I don't like is the feeling and sound of screwing in or out the stainless steel catch cup. It's metal on metal. I think I'll be purchasing the plastic version of the grinds catch. So far I have not felt the need for the rubber rest or dosing funnel, but I'll be reevaluating that in the coming months.
    Thanks again!

    • @gyozakeynsianism
      @gyozakeynsianism 3 роки тому

      So after more than a week of use, I can say I am really enjoying the Lido 3. I solved the metal-on-metal squeaky-squeak sound and feeling by dabbing coffee oils from the catch directly onto the screws of the catch. Also, coffee oils work their way into the rest of the mechanism and so everything gets smoother over time - including adjustment. So that's two complaints dealt with quite easily. I didn't end up buying the anti-static plastic catch and am happy with the metal one now.
      As the burrs are larger than all the other hand grinders shown here, grinding takes a bit more effort. (There are more beans between the burrs at any given time.) "Buttery smooth" is a bit of an exaggeration. So I went ahead and got the synthetic rubber rest from Orphan Espresso. I tried it today and it does seem to help with stability. If only I had been going to the gym all these years.

    Very helpful - thanks! For travel, I use an AeroPress (inverted) for darkish coffee or my Staresso (minus the glass and glass holder, thus very compact and light for pumping espresso-like brew into my camping cup). For grinding, I only have a Porlex Mini, which is compact and rather light, but not brilliant. Which lightweight and compact grinder would be best for my two target uses above (espresso-like and darkish)? It seems the Aergrind is sort of just barely OK for espresso, right? And the K. Travel would be perfect, right? But heavier? Any orientation you can provide would be great. Also curious about the Helor, though it seems it‘s not easy to find in Germany.

    If you use the Aergrind for the AeroPress, you can use the AeroPress funnel to get the beans in!
    But yeah, I brought my Aergrind out of town the other weekend, and it was definitely slower and more work than I remember my Lido 3 being. Still a great option to have on the road. So glad to have my electric grinders for the daily home use.

    • @baldheadracing
      @baldheadracing 4 роки тому

      @@dwikafebrianto3016 Yes, there are a few hand grinders with 68mm/71mm/83mm conical burrs like the HG-One, Pharos, Flux, etc. These are primarily used for espresso. The Apex is unique among currently-available hand grinders in having large flat (machined) 'ghost' burrs. These grinders are big, heavy, and sacrifice portability for markedly superior performance.

    • @dwikafebrianto3016
      @dwikafebrianto3016 4 роки тому

      @@baldheadracing So what category is it? Superbigass handgrinders? The size of the burrs are the same as the electric counterparts. I didn't know those grinders and haven't checked any review yet, but are their grind quality and grinding speed better than say Baratza Sette 270?

    • @baldheadracing
      @baldheadracing 4 роки тому

      @@dwikafebrianto3016 The Sette is very fast for its price point (and relatively loud). Comparing electric vs. hand grind speeds isn't easy to do.
      The biggest advantages of big conics are consistency and ease of dialing in. I have had the HG-One and have Pharoi and I would take either over any of the grinders in the review (or the Sette) - for espresso only.
      Note, however, if the Sette 270Wi matches your preparation workflow, then that is a powerful advantage. Similarly, if you have a workflow that matches the Niche Zero (63mm conic), then that is the current hotness for "value-for-money" electric espresso grinders. I have no experience with either.

      Sorry, a bit late here.. i had a porlex mini for very very long time, it worked really well in first few months. but after using it a lot, the consistency is getting worse, i found out that the "inner burr" is not actually centered properly and its a bit wobbly (the outer burr also wobbly). there's some mod that can reduce the wobble (using rubber band, etc), but still, not consistent at all, its like 50% fine and 50% medium coarse on fine setting. i can say that commandante is much better than porlex, *and it will last more longer than porlex*. i heard that porlex mini released a second version of it, that solved all that wobble problem, it looks the same as the first one but i havent tried it yet, and i havent seen the grind result of it.

      @@juggernaut316 Wow thanks. I am considering to buy either Comandante or Kinu M47 Phoenix. Both are in the same price range, both are good but I think Comandante tends to be better at coarse grind, however Kinu's grind quality doesn't suck at coarse grind and it is good for traveling too. For overall design Kinu is better but Comandante is easier to replicate recipes (the clicks system is way easier to set and memorize). TBH, I can not afford both of them. In my country, Comandante is hugely popular but it's not the case for Kinu. And the risk for having Comandante here is it's easier to be stolen if I am not careful. I heard so many stories from baristas that lost their Comandantes. This is a quite hard decision for me.

I noticed that a lot of the magnets stood proud of the catch so I pushed them all down flush. Then I was grinding one day and the catch dropped onto the floor. I guess I pressed the magnets in too far and there wasn’t enough grip to the grinder. Kinda miffed that my catch is damaged and it doesn’t grip very strongly anymore. Do you have a budget in mind? The Kinu M47 Traveler or Lido E-T make very nice espresso-centric travel grinders but are not the cheapest on the list.
