  • Ratt claimed things went round and round, and that's certainly how restoration projects seem to go as well. I had the starting system working great, fixed the generator, the speedometer, and just rebuilt the fuel pump. And now, the starter stopped working. So I turn to the brake problem and rebuild the old delco master cylinder while I wait for starter parts.

My grandfather had one of these but he never really showed us how it worked. He got older and didnt work on the car as much. About 5 years ago he no longer would occasionally fire up the engine and let it run. Sadly he passed this summer and now I have inherited the car. I really love cars I just know very little about pre wars like this. (1938 Buick Special 40) Anyways with minimal work I got it back up and running and I fired up the engine. This Christmas I returned to the house to see if it could be driven. After some time once again my father and I got the car running and then we went to back it out. Everything was fine, but after about 10 feet there was a loud snap and the brakes went limp. Now there is no resistance on the pedal. So we drove it back in and used the e brake. I went under the car and assumed the brake master cylinder was done, as its original. I took all the bolts out except for the final screw that connects it to the line it was stuck in there. AND im mean locked. So I just popped it back in and wont bother with it for alittle while. This video made me think this was the issues. The brake cylinder was also very lightly dribbling fluid when moved.
Long story short I am trying to figure out what went wrong today. We heard a snap and the break went dead. Brake line get cut a caliper? Any ideas? Thanks so much.

Great video....I have a 42 Studebaker Champion that is going to need the same thing. Not looking forward to it but your video gave me more confidence to do the project and get it back on the road.

As for the starter, Clare Generator in Salina is a good source for rebuilds...I used them. Been in business since forever.

Bob’s Automobilia has new 12 volt gear reduction starters for this car. I think they are a little pricey at $320 , got lucky and rebuilt mine. Great content on your channel

Nowhere near the rust under the Buick like you see on the newer cars and trucks.

I rebuild my master cylinder thank you very much! How difficult is it to replace the water pump? And any recommendations on where to locate one as well?
