@@TheMuserResolute for your first time listening to this masterpiece, you picked up quite a lot that most miss. The biggest part though was when you commented about baroque period. right after that it quickly goes through modern time we are in now....then you heard the "mushroom cloud" lyric. that was either nuclear war blast or collision of a large object with Earth that has the result of ending all life on earth. That was all of the red you saw at that one point with the deer running around etc. Earth being subjected to such energy it erupts in fire. I always wondered if when after that it 'calms' down briefly then you get that white flash on the screens and then "dramatic' metal again...if that was actually the Earth exploding and it in itself returning to the stars and being dispersed throughout the universe or if that flash actually was the start of another "big bang" to start the cycle all over again. That is why after that we can say "We were here.' Everything else can be taken away from us except for the fact "We were here!". I have listened to this piece several times now and pickup a bit more each time plus really gets me quite emotional and humbled by the universe and the miracle of life and just how lucky we are to be here now no matter what your beliefs are.
@@rickcarter7495 "We were here" - Also, we were here at the big bang when the Earth was formed from the space dust of the universe and condensing gas, all that material is still here, nothing has been gained or lost (some infinitesimal bits sent off into deep space) some of it has changed state but it is what this planet and all life on it is made from and we will, eventually, return to our previous state.
We were here and we are a universe.

At the "We Were Here" moment, there is something visceral to that moment that you get when you are in the audience. In the video, all you hear is the band... in the audience, when you are there with them, EVERYONE is screaming those words. It is an absolute moment you will never forget.
Yeah, that line is just so powerful, it really encompasses our mortality, and our will to fight for those little moments on Earth.

When your eyes lit up at the sound of the harpsichord, I _knew_ you would be the one. So far, you are the first person I've seen who actually identified that part. There may be others, but you are the first for me.

If you want something else in keeping with this sort of scientific focus, there's a lovely piece in the latest album (you gotta listen to some studio recorded Nightwish eventually, no?) called "Shoemaker". No, it's not about a man who makes shoes. To understand the lyrics and everything there's a little background you should know about what is to come before you listen.
This song was a tribute to the life of Eugene Shoemaker. Shoemaker was a geologist and well-known as being "the father of planetary science". You may have heard of his name before as one of the discoverers of the Shoemaker-Levy comet that broke up and collided with Jupiter back in 1994. Anyway, Shoemaker worked for NASA for many years and was part of the Apollo program as an astronaut until his being diagnosed with Addison's disease, which grounded him. Years later, he said that the greatest disappointment of his life was that he never got to go bang his hammer on the moon. He was killed in a car accident in 1997 while in Australia researching a meteor crater there. In 1999 a special urn carrying his ashes was attached to the Lunar Prospector probe which mapped the moon and then (intentionally) crashed into a crater near the lunar south pole (which by the way was named after Shoemaker already), making him the only person to be buried on another celestial body. The urn was engraved with the Shakespeare quote from Romeo and Juliet in the video.
The "Laudato Si" and "Ad Astra" bits at the end were Latin, meaning "Praise be" and "To the stars". But there's a little more to it than just that.
"Laudato Si" is a phrase taken from St. Francis of Assissi's famous song "The Canticle of the Sun", in which he praises the air, water, fire, sun, planets, animals, etc. as being our brothers and sisters. Death as well. And the most notable line regarding this song was:
"Laudato si, mi Signore, per sora Luna e le stelle:
in celu l'ài formate clarite et pretiose et belle."
which means:
"Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,
in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful."
The term "Ad astra" is used in a variety of places in ancient Latin writings as well as in some modern contexts. Beyond its literal meaning, it implies the accomplishment of something that is practically impossible or very difficult. The first known usage is from Virgil in The Aneid, where he wrote "sic itur ad astra" or "thus one journeys to the stars" with the idea that it is how one accomplishes the impossible, and "opta ardua pennis astra sequi" or "desire to pursue the high (or hard to reach) stars on wings" when Aeneas taunts Turnus in combat. Another origin is Seneca the Younger, who wrote "non est ad astra mollis e terris via" or "there is no easy way from the earth to the stars".
After the disaster of Apollo 1 in which three astronauts were killed in a flash fire that destroyed their capsule on the launching pad, a memorial was erected with the phrase "ad astra per aspera" which means "to the stars through hardships".

In fact 8 of the 9 songs from the new album have official lyric videos and the 9th (Noise, the second album track) has an official music video! Having watched all your NW reactions so far and having heard your comments and the parts of the compositions that obviously excite you, I highly recommend that you react to the new album. It's full of those bits and pieces, with lots of Easter Eggs hidden within the lyrics, that reference other songs in the album and also even songs on their previous albums! It's a masterpiece! It's a double album with the second CD being 1 Orchestral suite divide into 9 parts, each celebrating a different aspect of Nature.
T yeah, all that, but the album should be reacted to in order though. In my opinion.

" We were here" always chokes me up. But, when I saw the Wembley video, seeing Richard Dawkins come out, I couldn't hold back my tears. I admire and respect him so much. Seeing those two world's colide....huge.
I tend to prefer the Wembley version. It's a more intimate performance and I really like Troy using the e-bow in place of the cello at Tampere. Just a personal preference. Both performances are great.
I love that you picked up the Bach piece. The one following was Metallica and transitioning into EDM which shows nicely the musical changes in our time.

Marko the bassist also is the lead singer for Tarot and appears on at least one Ayreon album. Super talented guy and a great singer!
That interlude near the end is actually very genius. It's the retelling of human history through the evolution of music. In the album version, the sounds are much clearer, especially if you really listen for them. It starts with tribal music with percussion and chants, then a Gregorian "hum", Dies Irae, Bach's Minuet, the subject from BWV 565's fugue, banjo music, Rock Around The Clock, Enter Sandman then finally EDM. It gives the next chorus an entirely different context and vibe.
I knew all of those were in it except Rock Around the Clock--do you have a timestamp in this vid or in the studio version??

You are absolutely correct! It is slowly developing. The drummer is Kai Hahto. You nailed it! It was "Toccata en Fugue in d minor". Then at the end of the passage you hear 2 guitar riffs from Metallica, "Enter Sandman". This part was not placed in the timeline. It was just Tuomas' way of paying tribute to the evolution of music from Bach to Metallica. Can you imagine presenting this idea as a song to your band mates? "Hey everybody I have this great idea for a 20 minute concept song that chronicles 4.6 billions years of the evolution of the Universe, the Solar System, the planet Earth, and all its life forms"! "With a little social commentary thrown in for good measure". "What do you think"? Quite an elaborate concept.
You spoke about listening to Poet and the Pendulum and getting more out of the song than on your initial listen. This is why we fans always suggest that the reactor do some background research before tackling this song. This song documents quite a tragic and emotionally depressing episode in Tuomas' life as well as the history of his incredible creation, which is Nightwish.
Loved your reaction to this song. I agree with you regarding the musical complexity of this song being pretty straight forward. I think that due to the length of this song it would have taken away from the flow of something this extended if Tuomas had incorporated multiple time & key changes. This, I feel would have given the listener the impression of several different songs being molded together with all of the interlude sections. you will appreciate it even more once you have a chance to explore the lyrical content.

Someone who finally, really gets all the nuances of this one. The genius of how it was composed. This group of musicians are "musicians, musicians" that know how to touch everyone (bards in every sense). The extensive educational backgrounds of all of them really shine in this and in their new album. Unfortunately, the new album can lose those who do not have musical backgrounds. I have conversed with many who just do not get the genius and vocalize "when will they start doing real music again". This band is expanding its musical side. I do not begrudge them that. I am fascinated as a musician myself to see where they go(grow) next.

So many people think that the album is not a Nightwish album or they've lost something but the truth is it's an incredibly technical album with so many layers that don't reveal themselves on the first listen (or the tenth!)
Human Nature is something way beyond what Nightwish have done before and it's pretty much all I listen to now and I still find the album complex and because of that it's still engaging me after so many listens.
Music nerds should love it!
For me the real nightwish starts when they fired Tarja and Toumas stopped making songs for her voice and more what he always wanted, soundtracks.
@@TheMuserResolute When you do, you should either react to all of the songs in order, or at the very least make sure you listen to Music first, then Shoemaker, Procession, and finally Endlessness. When you hear Endlessness, it *has* to be immediately after having listened to an appropriate prefacing song; I'd recommend Procession or Tribal (Tribal being just before it on the album), though Music or Shoemaker would also work. My vote, if you're only going to do one song as preface, however, is Procession. The theme is the one which most meaningfully and immediately precedes the theme of Endlessness. Technically you could say that Tribal is closer in terms of time (that is, the time reflected by the theme, not its place in the album per say), but Procession has more of a core theme of the album running through it. The lyric video is incredibly powerful, as well, much more so than Tribal, at least for me.
This concert was a special for fans-20 years of Nightwish and Floor's parents were in public 😍🎩👌🙋

I've always thought of "We Were Here" as the cry of a civilization, of a species, which knows it is going to die out, imploring the universe to at least recognize that it existed. That if there were one last, final message that Humanity will scream to the Heavens with its dying breath, these will be the words: *"We Were Here"*

Marko the bassist no longer has a falsetto as it was lost it due to a botched vocal surgery to remove a polyp. The animal grunts were being done by all three vocalists. There's a another video out there from a different concert where the camera is not out of focus and we can see that all three are grunting. And yes, Floor can grunt that deep. She does so at the intro for 'music' as well.
BTW, at the Wembley concert, Dawkins is with them on stage at the end and does his bit live.

This performance continuously builds up to such an extreme degree of emotion, adrenaline, pathos and epicness, it only can leave you completely smashed.

Yes, that was Bach around 21:15 in your video and the guitar riff starting at 22:12 is from Metallica's "Enter Sandman" song... Tuomas - no words for his brilliant compositions.

They start it with some grunting noises, then go to some vuvuzela or other horns, then there's Bach, then there is a riff with banjo, then Enter Sandman and overlapping with the Enter Sandman riff there is dubstep bass.
@@TheMuserResolute One of the best reactions I have seen. You know what you are talking about. You really should listen to the album version also, so much of the "history of sound", from primal and animal sounds, music like the menuet and electronic sounds and beats, is lost in the live version. I have listened tens of times to this masterpiece and every time again I hear new things that I skipped in earlier listenings. I believe (not sure) Troy said in an interview that over 600 tracks/layers were used to create the sound. So It is impossible to hear everything from the first time. And that is the beauty of good written music, not only from Tuomas.

Hello. Please help me find the name of the Bach composition that plays in the song. My knowledge of English and classical music is not enough to find out for myself or to pick out from your speech(if you pronounce it). But the desire to find it has been eating me for many months ))
I was introduced to NW over 10 years ago by my daughter. I'm Finnish born but I've lived in Australia for the last 51 years. I gave myself the best 60th birthday present and saw NW in Sydney on 9 January 2016 and loved the show. My daughter has given me their last 3 albums as birthday presents, the latest being Human /:/ Nature. Tuomas Holopainen is a musical genius, today's Mozart or Rossetti. Floor Jansen has the best voice I've ever heard and has me in tears by the end of Ghost Love Score and The Greatest Show on Earth every time I listen to them. I loved your reaction and could see my reaction mirrored in yours. Thank you.

When you got some time, you should definitely check out the Wembly version of this song. Troy uses an E-bow in the intro that is mesmerizing. And Dawkins comes out on stage to for his bit at the end. Definitely worth a watch.

No matter how many times i listen to this piece, EVERYTIME since WE WERE HERE moment I have tears in my eyes, and when Dawkins speaks, I am crying. It's something so small and simple, but, the first time I ever heard this song, I was out having a walk, and right when I passed a museum of art's, the Back piece in the background began, and Tocata AND Figure, and then Metálica, AND a bit of EDM... I passed a museum right at that moment. The whole song, to be fair, that was magical. It was as if everything I saw while I was listening, was in perfect synchronicity with the symbolisms of the song. I've never experienced such a thing in my life.
I had the privilege to attend their concert in Budapest, and I can assure you, that singing "we were here!" along with an entire venue, all at once, was the most beautiful and moving concerts I've ever been to. I get emotional every time I remember. Glad to see others react in similar ways. This piece is so beautiful. Thanks for this video, sir.

I don't think I have yet seen anyone as transfixed by a Nightwish performance as you were to this epic. No surprise, really. It grabs you right from the start, and 20 minutes later, you are surprised it's over.

These people sparkle my scenery. They have such oceans within. I believe that the beginning of this piece is mimicking the ripples of that first ocean. The fireworks are the first signs of life. How many keyboard players do you know that need to have a fireworks permit in their back pocket?

The name of the bass player is Marco Hietala and the drummer is Kai Hatho.
What a lot of people seem to miss is that Troy is also singing along with Marko and Floor. (He's the guy on the pipes).
I love it that finally, someone goes "Wait, was that Bach?" rather than "Wait, was that Metallica?", although I think you caught that bit too.
There's several bits of music from different time periods and genres in there during that section.
The house beat and Metallica's 'Enter Sandman' riff are the most noticeable though. But there's five or six in all.
You may want to check out the video from the 'Vehicle of SPirits' tour of the same song at Wembley, Dr Dawkins comes on stage to say his final words. Maybe not for a reaction but just for yourself :-)
I genuinely loved your interpretation of this amazing song. Your absolute childlike enthusiasm and wonder was beautiful. I especially liked your reaction to the uilliean pipes ( lnown as the small pipes here in Scotland) Im coming to the end of my life, a great and wonderful life, and this song makes me ok about dying. Why should i complain. Ive lived a life in over 20 countries, have amazing children , and a million brilliant memories. Im sick of pain, and this song makes me ok about what lies beyond.

Nightwish is a f*ing awesome band all on its own but this my friend, this is how you elevate yourself to new heights, this song is amazing!!
One takeaway I got from this song, combined with the narration: *We. Were. Here.* We, humanity, have been here, and we have made a mark on the universe. We should be proud of what we have accomplished and what we leave behind for those to follow us, be it more of humanity or some other species entirely.
This is by far the best reaction to this masterpiece, I have seen on UA-cam. You understood, and got the whole composition - build up, layers, time evolved - great reaction.
Keep on - their new album is a follow-up on this - Nightwish are so much into science and evolution. Tuomas, Troy and Floor all wanted to be Biologists when they were young (luckily they didn't) and are still suckers for nature and science.

Nightwish is a weird band. The compositions by Tuomas and the musicianship of the band is overwhelming at times. No other band can create a song that if you close your eyes, you can be right there in the music.
I personally am not an emotional person, but some nightwish songs, especially these mammoths (this one & poet and the pendulum also) make me feel a lot. Amazing.

I think after this pandemic, you should seek out a Nightwish concert and vlog it. It's one thing listening to their concerts on screen, but really being there is a whole other thing.
This is my favorite Nightwish song. Coming from someone who loves pretty much every Nightwish song they have heard, this is saying something. It is also the ONE song I highly recommend listening to the studio version of. All that bit at the end after the last fireworks when the band is taking their bows is included in the studio version and is much easier to hear. That being said, I find this to be a simply amazing and poignant performance. Everything ties in so amazingly well from the music itself, to the visuals on the screen behind the band, the pyrotechnics, etc. to tell the story being told in the song. Simply incredible.
Yes, you did hear Bach. That segment actually starts with some tribal drums and chanting, moves to Bach, then to some folk music with a banjo, a snippet of the guitar riff from a Metallica's "Enter Sandman," and finally ends with the electronica beats. Essentially, a tiny section of the song plays the history of music inside of the greater story of the history of the earth and its people. This is also actually much easier to hear on the studio version. Likewise are some of the keywords and phrases used in the lyrics such as "Archaean Horizon," "Goldilocks Zone," "Enter LUCA," and "Devonian Sea," just to name a few.
The thing you have to understand about Nightwish is this....you don't just "listen" to a Nightwish song. You EXPERIENCE it! And Tuomas is not just one of the great composers out there currently, he really is one of the great storytellers in music today.
That was a real joy watching you react to that performance. You were astonished at the points that astonish us all, even after countless viewings. Your take on the subject matter was very good.

i love your reactions and how you feel the music. Nightwish last albums are more bigger than a normal album they're soundtracks of life itself, and can´t be played just one song, it needs to be played the full album.
My favorite song to watch a reaction to is this one and it is rare because it is so long. I really must say, yours was the absolute best I have seen for this song! Usually either the message or the music is lost to the reactor but you passionately and precisely navigated both! Just the answers to a few questions (though I imagine people have already addressed these below):
The drummer is not the same as you saw for Ghost Love Score but the same for Poet...
THAT WAS BACH! When you were questioning yourself I was yelling "rewind further!!" What's neat about that section is he shows the very rapid progression of humanity as we know it which is such an infinitely small part of the overall story. The way I've always interpreted it is the "scary" tribal part is the first humans, then much later, we get to Bach and the explosion just after Bach is the industrial revolution. Then you'll notice a few measures later, it sounds very electronic and you see cars in the background. Then a few measures later, a Metallica riff (we're soundly in the 80s at this point) then the few beats before the chorus is very hard bass 90s etc. This is all much more audible in the studio version. The explosion at the end is the inevitable end of mankind.

I have to get a couple Kleenex ready every time I watch this song. It's just such an impactful and touching concept, and also serves really well to remind us of our own mortality and how important it is to live each day to it's fullest and leave the world whole for the next generation. Powerful joy, responsibility, and even a little bit of mourning all at once...it's bound to make our eyes leak.

It was a pleasure to see another person that appreciates the details of the composition and science both at the same time. I enjoyed your reaction so much it made me feel like I was reacting to this the first time I heard it as well. I learned percussion in a classical environment but also learned that I could apply what I learned to metal music which I enjoy as much as a good piano concerto or listening to a symphony because well written music can come from any genre. When the album for this song was being produced, Nightwish made over a dozen vignettes showing the composing, rehearsal and choir & orchestral arrangements & recording with the London Philarmonic, and in the video for the recording they say at one point that for this song they had to use 600 tracks!
