just make sure when you get the van, you get a full engine service, oil change, especially a gearbox service, new brake fluid, power steering fluid, and so on. this will be over a thousand dollars in the US but trust me, it's so worth it. i've been working on cars, vans, building machinery, you name it, since i was 10 with my dad. trust me when i say it will be so worth it in the long run. i hope it all goes well. rest in peace to frank.

Top tip... steer clear of any 4x4 with oversized tires, lift kit, and the whole thing which makes it look "cool" unless you know someone who really knows 4x4 suspensions and can look at the work that was done to sign off on it. Most aftermarket suspension 'upgrades' are complete junk and are horrible in terms of actual functionality. They look great, but they're trash. If you want a 4x4, aim for something with normal sized tires that looks stock and unmodified.

Hey Alex and Emma 🙂 Just looking at it van no.1 looked very professional and tight. I thought no.2 was a little shaggy and (just by the look of it..) might turn up some trouble in short term. Of course you have to realise that if the mechanics are older (the van space is usually well restored) it might at the end need replacement of cetain parts. And then the issue is: are these parts still available.. A van of the 1980's is about 40 years old .. good chance some parts can be trouble to replace.
My tip: try to buy something mechanically solid. Look at the engine, listen to the engine, check for leakage under the van, check for exhaust fumes (blue oily or white steamy rubbery smell)
Look at the electronics (does it look tidy and untouched?) and let some one expert look at it too. The interior you can adapt yourself; the mechanics you will probably need a garage for fixing and America has plenty of places you don't want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere.
    Happy hunting!

The first van definitely looked well maintained, but the age would be my concern. Also, in regards to that, you guys want to use the van for a few years, and it’s already 35+ years old. Even if it proves to be as sound as it appears, parts could be a problem to find when needed. If it were me, I’d keep on a lookin! 😊

The availability of mechanical parts should not be much of a problem. Those vans were sold in great enough quantity and so many are still on the road that parts are more reliably found than a lot of newer van parts.

Bathroom is a luxury, having a compost toilet and outdoor shower are great and can easy find a place to be while not in use. And having opening windows for ventilation is also a must with screens.

Over the years we have traveled across country twice and many shorter trips in between. Having said that, we have repaired and replaced a number of things at a cost of an additional $10,000 over the years. This includes a new paint job. But we love it. It has never left us stranded. Hopefully that owner has taken care of many of those things. Good luck whatever you choose. John and Angie

Also something to consider, the availability of parts just in case it breaks down. Some places don't have mechanics that are familiar with aged vehicles. I do agree older campervans can take the beating more than the newer ones and they don't fall apart at the first year. Some should be in show displays only, just because it is an "antique" and unique type of vehicle (ex. VW buses, collector's items) I hope the couple will take their time searching for a while to get the right campervan.

There's nothing better than a Dodge. I vote for van #1. I've owned Dodge vans for years, and they are super reliable. My 1992 Dodge has 276,000 miles on it, and it has never let me down. I had a 1974 Dodge van before the 1992, and it was still running great with 330,000 miles on it. If it hadn't have gotten totaled in an accident (I got rear ended at a traffic light), I'd probably still have it.

Recommendations: Stay away from the old VW, and any other vehicles where parts may be harder to get for repairs. Remember that Mercedes tends to be on the high end for repairs.
Also, if traveling to other countries with a camper van, look into propane connection converters because propane connections tend to differ especially in South America.
First van seemed much better than the second, the second van looks like it would not handle corners quite as well as the first van.

So great to see you enjoying NYC!
Curious thing about an old Dodge van from the 1980s is that mechanically it is far preferable to a newer one. The electronics are simpler, the controls are easier to troubleshoot and repair, and the engine and transmission far more reliable and sturdier than anything Dodge has put into its domestically designed (actual Chrysler Corp) manufactured vans (as opposed to the Sprinter, which was really just a rebadged Mercedes, or the Promaster, which is a Fiat Ducato made in Mexico, both being supplied by the then-parent company of Chrysler.)
Those old Dodges with the 318 or 360 motors, Torqueflite transmissions and simple emissions controls were developed over a long time, generally made well, and are really durable and super reliable when looked after. In the US, parts are dirt cheap and many, many shops can work on them. Losing your first American van in a fire like you did is a once-in-a-lifetime disaster, and shouldn't put you off buying another van or cutaway chassis (look that up) of that vintage. Millions of them are still going strong every day as work trucks, and there are no doubt multiple online groups of people who love, hoard and use these things constantly who are eager to help you keep one on the road cheaply and happily.
That's the part (respectfully) that you and so many others tend to overlook about buying the ideal used vehicle (which could be anything from a sailboat to a business jet) They look at 2 or 20 completely different things in a very short period of time (often in an overheated seller's market) and buy something before they really understand what it is, how to support it, and its real benefits and limitations. I understand; you don't really have time to do all that looking and vetting,, but you'll learn all the foibles after you buy it anyway, so narrowing your search down to a specific vehicle or two up front makes a lot of sense. You kind of did that process with your VW vans, from the rusty green one to the much better red one, but those can be expensive lessons. Think of how much better you'd be evaluating another one of those now. It pays to really know what you are looking for, That's what car hobbyists do. They pick a car/bus/snowmobile etc. that they love, learn about it, tap into the club of owners far more fanatical than themselves, figure out which variation of that vehicle they really want, and then the search for the best available example at a fair price begins.
These two strategies, of course, (needing something right now and picking the seemingly best option to get on the road ASAP v. searching for the best available specimen of just the right vehicle that you won't ever need or want to sell) are not mutually exclusive. You could buy something now and then take the time to really study what you want and conduct a search for your Cinderella van. With 1/4 Billion cars on the road in the USA, the one you'll be really happy with forever is almost certainly out there- probably dozens of them that would be perfect. They do not, however, just appear on Facebook Marketplace in the few weeks you have to buy something near where you are. Most of the best of any desirable vehicle, from a vintage Ferrari to a Blue Bird Wanderlodge motorhome, are traded privately between the people who love and keep them, and rarely if ever are advertised for sale outside that community. Its the people behind the vehicles that support each other to keep them on the road. There are Airstream people, GM Scenicruiser bus people, Winnebago people, Toyota Chinook people, skoolie people, houseboat people, so many, many groups of cool people- some of whom you really want to know! The happiest owners settle in on their dream machine, find a tribe of similarly minded devotees, and then those people guide the right vehicles to each other...
Put less romantically, you can get on the road quickly, and never stop looking for that perfect vehicle, all at the same time.
Enjoy the big, beautiful USA, and be sure to get a Denino's pizza while you're on Staten Island...

Out of the two you’ve seen I really like the first one and I think if it didn’t look like Frank and wasn’t from that era, there would be no hesitation. That being said, hesitation and not jumping in is smart. But it’s lovely and I think knowing it’s actually been driven on some longer stretches and also driven regularly in recent times helps. Keep looking though, you can always come back to it!

I have a 1992 Toyota Itasca RV and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Those who have these old Toyotas usually take great care of them and you can sleep up to 4 people, sometimes 6, very easily. They have showers, toilets, ovens, refrigerators, and more. You can usually pick up a pretty nice one built between '85-'93 from $10,000-$15,000. In any case, you asked which of the 2 in the video I would take and it would be the first one you looked at. Very well reconstructed, it would appear. If you're not using Craigslist for your search, you might give it a try. Lots of RV and photos you can see.

I'm going to be very honest here. If you are going to use something to travel around the US, then maybe look for something bigger and a lot newer. Currently RV sales are way down in 2022 and therefore large discounts are been given at the moment for RVs at the price range you were looking at in your video. Also to look out for is the fact that many states are now coming down heavily on people in vans and RVs, so make sure you also don't get caught out on that. I'm hoping you do find something suitable as I always love your videos.

So interesting! This is the second UA-cam video I've seen in the past week or so that focused on Van Alley in NYC. I hadn't known it existed before. I believe the gentleman who was selling van #1 was there working on his new project and said a few words to the other UA-camr. I definitely liked his rebuild better than the second, but I'd lean toward getting something newer with a few less miles. Have fun looking and enjoy the journey to find your new US motoring home!

I think it really depends on how many miles the vehicle has. I have an older mini van that will have things break just from age. It doesn't have high miles, but for example the cooling fan for the evaporative cooler went out just because it was plastic and that wore out from being in the elements. So with an older vehicle you will have problems even if it has low miles.

I wouldn't worry about the year too much. For example, the first van, for example, has solar and new wiring all over. That's why you need to look for something that is safe. Older is sometimes better because any Chevy you can find parts for can fix it on the side of the road with a rock and a stick. I think the first van was very well built. I would focus more on upgrades and wiring. meaning, what has and hasn't been touched or redone. Stop looking at all the things you want and start looking at all the things that haven't been upgraded. Once you start to focus on that, you will see that it doesn't matter how old it is. You will start to see. These vans get 90% redone because they know how to redo them. A good builder won't skimp out on his work. It's like a master woodworker. Once you find a van that's close to being finished, there are several things you can do. For example, a car radio with GPS is not an easy issue. or you want to add more batter or better solar. The simple thing that would make it just that much better. I would also look for something that is EFI. Old school carbs can work well if tuned right, but it's just a matter of when they act up. Plus, high-altitude driving in the mountains can be a pain. If you have to change jets on a carb, so EFI, it will adjust itself. Besides that, just look for things you would do differently, like the wiring, like sticking your head in there, making sure everything is running right and grounded, etc., same with under the hood and under the frame.

Glad you’re being cautious this time. I love your channel. Of the ones you’ve shown in the video, I’d go for the first van but I would replace every hose or line that has fluid going through it. I’d also consider replacing the radiator and maybe even the water pump as well as all the spark plug leads. American vehicles even older ones still have parts available and there will be far more shops able to work on them than European vehicles. I would still have a thorough mechanical and safety inspection done. As everyone suggested though, please keep looking.

That 1st van is you. Why not buy the first van you see? Have it throughly inspected. All hose, belts, tires brakes you see where I'm going. Get all the maintenance records. The transmission and engine are your big ticket items. Take that van out on the highway for about and hour and you'll know right away if it's for you. Good luck with whatever you choose. Well, the Van's in van alley are pretty well kept. I've been watching them for a while now. And although they do drive they don't drive much, so they aren't putting alot of extra mileage on the rig. I think the one in van alley is cool. Just have someone check the engine. The engine is the main component. If that passes muster everything else can be addressed as you go along. Judging by your purchase of the van that was similar to that one I think that's pretty much your style.

The first van was better but lets keep this "REAL". You are in the USA, so that should absolutely be the smallest you should be looking at. It should have a Air Conditioner, Heater, Hot Water Heater, Shower and Toilet and Solar for off-grid and if you don't have a generator, get the Honda EU2200 suitcase generator (it will run the AC), best for small setups. 4x4 is NOT as important as pretty much everywhere we have gone off-grid has gravel roads at a minimum, and you just wont be going down a muddy road anyways with any RV and we are big off roaders too. The risks are just too high if you get stuck and trying to pull and RV out way down a muddy forest service road is krazy! Ask us how we know?

Stay away from the salty air places. Rust is a big concern. Also open the hood and look at the motor. Find something with low miles. The first van will be a gas guzzler. It’s way heavy. You need to look in the middle of the country, less money, no rust.

I know you seem set on a van, but a trailer with a pickup to pull it (IF you are comfortable with the precautions you need to take to safely pull a trailer) is a more logical choice in the US. You drop the trailer where you are going to be and you still have transportation. Remember, any campground you are likely to visit will be miles from a grocery store/bank/urgent care doctor/etc... If you go 'boondocking' you can use the pickup to haul water in and trash out without having to button everything up to move your living quarters. Plus, you could keep the trailer in storage when you go back to the UK, and sell the pickup. There will always be used pickups available and much easier to find (or rent) than a camper you like.

Hi guys great video. Ive worked on restored and been a gearhead all my life. As far as the dodge is concerned those did have transmission issues due to weight of the rv. Also they had electrical issues.even though its in such good kit i would suggest passing on it.
The sprinter on the othet hand is a great platform. Id wait and find one with a extended roofline for height. And obviously ac. They are a premium price due to newness though. Stay away from anything in 80s imo. You may want to consider a class c that has low miles itll have all the ammenitys your looking for and a chassis built for the weight. Anyway thatsmy 2 cents. I've technically got the blue one (exact same measurements and model but from VW). It's a great Van to live in alone, but not so great for the 2 (+1) of you.
However - these Vans exist in different sizes (like the Vanwifes have) and could absolutely fullfill your needs, while being very reliant and reasonable with fuel consumption.

My two cents: Get a good newer cargo van and convert it yourselves! You can rent anything stateside (maker space and tools), and it's easy to receive parts even w/o a steady address (Mailboxes Etc ). Look for a Promaster, that's a Fiat Ducato = Peugeot Boxer, and there is a myriad of conversion parts (windows, roof vents and whatnot) that's specifically geared to that particular body style. Heck, you can do this in a Home Depot parking lot, while you live in the vehicle. You'll get exactly what you want and don't pay for somebody else's conversion. Courage, beans! I have a 21 ft. RV C class so very easy to drive, it is a 2013 I believe or 2014 with very low mileage (around 45K). I'm getting ready to have the tanks swapped out for new ones, new A/C mini split units one in the bedroom, one in the "living room/kitchen/workspace and then solar on top and have to reseal the entire roof. CA sun damages the roof so fast!! I personally love the RV space, it's really lovely and it fits two people perfectly (we're small too 5'2 and 5'6) so no worries on roof space, LOL. I would recommend a younger model for your van or RV or mini schoolie, I totally see you both in a mini schoolie that is all set up with good air con and solar. GOOD LUCK!!! It's fun watching you find a new one.

Hello too both of you. Welcome back.
The process of finding the van of your dreams is a challenging adventure. I wish the best of luck to you both.
I will share that I had a1986 camper van which was identical to the first one you looked at. I had the van for many many years drive it from Texas to Rhode Island at least twice a year. When the kids were small it was something we excitingly looked forward to year after year. Unfortunately kids got older and bigger and well I am sure you can figure what happened next.
It was a 318 motor with a 727 transmission. Got between 10 to 12 miles per gallon. The 360 motor was another option for dodge. 360 uses more gas.
    Things to check
    1. Front end. Over time the steering box requires maintenance
    2. Tie rods and steering components maybe worn
    3. Brake caliper pistons (original calipers) can freeze closed. If replaced should not be a problem.
    4. Wiper bushings under vowel (plastic) maybe ready to break.
    5. Ujoint health should be checked.
The video did not say how many miles it had on it. Best of luck in your search. Looking forward to your next video.
Ohhh how old is roof ac?

The first van builder was on Mav’s UA-cam last week when he slept in that ally and chatted with Drew a couple of times.
Depending on the quality of the van’s life and how it’s been kept would get a second opinion asap or you stand a chance of losing the opportunity to buy it should someone else scoop it up.
Maybe look up the carfax to see the history if there is some data like for oil changes and accidents, etc.
Just comparing the two builds in this video by appearance prefer the first based on your needs, and think both likely are super sound as these men lived in the vans so they know their functionality.

Some of those old school bus type ones looked amazing. So much space and quite modern. I'd be hesitant to buy an older one as I'd always be worrying about it breaking down but that's just me. If you were to go for that first one I'd want to make sure it's not a common fault that happens with that style of van.

Buy the 1987 Van Right Away and then you have the option to simply replace all the fuel and brake lines, even if they're still in good condition for peace of mind. Bring in your expert to check out the engine block to make sure the engine and drive train is sound. Don't be worried about the age, as most RV's don't get driven in anylike manner as a regular car would. You also have the option of a natural gas conversion if you can't stomach the gasoline milage.

Yes to the Dodge 100%. The Merc sprinter no thank you . Used a sprinter at work for three years not heavy work either. Was so pleased to get out of it. Trouble after trouble and it's fuel consumption was terrible. After inspection the Dodge should be good, if it needs parts they are not that difficult to source even at that age. Good luck with the hunt guys. Very interested to be going along with you.

Yay! Back in the U.S.! And something that was absolutely amazing to me is that out of all of NYC, the street with the first van you checked out was the exact same street featured in Maverick's NY truck camping video of Jul 24: ua-cam.com/video/zGsllc_X6q4/v-deo.html, and even showed that van and its owner. Talk about coincidences. 😄

I paused it as soon as they turned down that street to see if anyone else had seen it as well. That's so weird and random. I wonder when Mav did his video compared to this one, and whether it was the guy who was doing builds too.

Just subscribed, really like your style .we are long time rv enthusiasts, with a deep knowledge of these vehicles. I feel what you’ve looked at so far is first off way too old and the second blue was just one poorly constructed. Rust on the undercarriage with this first one at this age can be a thing . Please know that 30 year old systems ( fridges and heaters, air conditioners ) etc don’t just keep working . What we do when shopping is have the fridge cold on arrival , run the furnace , cycle the air conditioning Run the water pump. Does the unit have a propane leak sensor, smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector .You will quickly start to get a feel on a units general condition. If it all works then take it to a really good rv tech and pay good money for a deep dive. Old is cool and cute, but can be a nightmare. Then the unit needs a whole separate mechanical inspection for the drive system, fuel system , look for electrical shorts.etc I’ve even seen a few of these old clunkers on the side of the road on fire. (Sorry) GO NEWER. Use you brain first , then fall in love with it. Good luck.
