Hello and welcome to this weird crevasse of the internet where we get really excited about music (particularly Taylor Swift) and break down our favourite albums and songs. Our names are Bonny and Emily, and our aim with these videos is to share our love for music and also share context and understanding around the songs, by highlighting breaking down the lyrics, melodies and production. We are so happy to have created this little community that is just as unhinged as us when it comes to music 🤪
Something that hits even harder when you know the context of the song is that Josh didn't have a relationship with his mother. So her calling himworried because she was seeing death threats online is just that much more heartbreaking
really? lifeline hits more harder now
he doesnt have a relationship with his mom? what about lifeline?
@@Vi-lz8ev he didn't have a really good relationship with his parents because they are very Christian and didn't support him coming out - that's what i've gotten from his lyrics, podcasts....etc.
@@Vi-lz8ev she showed up for him at the hospital despite them not always getting along. The bridge in lifeline touches a bit on that .
@@neisha_with_a_t3441 oh cool
I think it was Olivia’s responsibility to tell her fans to back off, especially if her songs aren’t 100% factual. It is up to her to speak out about the conversation going on around her music. Her fans most likely respect her and would listen to her. Before these three songs were released Josh clearly told his fans to not attack Olivia, which was really mature of him and what she should’ve done.
I really agree
i Totally agree
you know many men were still attacked by Swifties even more than 10 years of their breakups. Taylor said she didn't think about their feelings at all in last year's interview.
Are you aware that people say the same about taylor?
@@vankf5164 yeah and even though i adore taylor, she should acknowledge how her songs could hurt her exes and say something too.
now you guys have to listen to sad songs in a hotel room that just came out! AND GRACIE ABRAMS!
GOTTA LOVE GRACIE ABRAMS
OMG YESSS
Yes to Gracie Abrams! :)
Yes Gracie Abrams!!
pls
their relationship was literally the personification of Exile lyrics "you never gave a warning sign" "I gave so many signs"
WOW
DAMN
joshua is such a good kid, and he is so badly misjudged by the media. did you know that for this ep he donated $1 for every presave to charity, raising over $20k for mental health organizations? in addition, he donated 100% of the proceeds from crisis to charity. in addition to that, he has donated 100% of all his merch proceeds to the charity since he opened his store in january 2021. in addition to that, he donated portions of every ticket he sold from his tour to charity. in ADDITION, he recently decide to donate 100% of his proceeds from his latest single lifeline to charity. I could go on...
This is amazing wow
@@chatsandreacts he really is! when joshua was 16 he was homeless and living out of his car, so he's talked about how that experience having literally nothing made him want to use his platform to give back more now that he has a relatively successful career.
@@shreyamani2567 i love u
@@chatsandreacts PLEASE happier than ever album reaction i am cryingggg 😭😭
what's interesting is that for crisis, it's not just the profits he gets off pure sales, but every single time the song is monetized the charity gets the money; basically, the charity gets 100% of the perpetuities. meaning videos like this, and every youtube/ tiktok, etc that uses it, and if the song is ever used in a soundtrack, he will get no profit. truly incredible, and you genuinely don't hear other celebrities do things like this, ever. usually other artists will just donate the profit of pure sales, and then after that, they'll begin to earn money off of it. it's a true show of his character, and i think he is paving the way for a lot of artists in the future
I do think it’s worth mentioning as well that “Set Me Free” is actually in many ways more about processing other traumas in the wake of everything that happened with the Olivia drama. He’d made comments about how much of that song was processing childhood sexual abuse and a relationship he’d had with an older man, and it really put the whole thing in a new light that’s often overshadowed by the Sour of it all. There’s certainly something to be said for how trying to process and write creatively about a difficult emotional situation can force you to reckon with others you haven’t unpacked.
Joshua said this on Genius: "I experienced sexual abuse a lot in my childhood. I didn’t remember that until last year, which is pretty insane. I buried it so far. And when I was a teen, a much older man routinely abused me, and I wasn’t able to see it for what it was at the time. “Set Me Free,” the third song released today, is in part about processing this experience. It’s an anthem for me and the sort of people who’ve held pain and power over me my whole life. You’ve taken so much from me, but you don’t get to take all of me."
His interview with Zach Sang is very telling! I would highly suggest watching it before looking at his new music.
but this song was written before he remembered the abuse he faced as a child. he said on zach sang that the song became relevant to the situation of the abuse he faced later on and letting go of it all. the song is still definitely about all he faced in last year.
@@Emma-yl2fj ohmygod
I don’t follow him super closely and wasn’t aware of that. Thank you sm for that information, it definitely adds more depth to my understanding of his music
Olivia is young Taylor, writing songs about her hurt, and Josh is now Taylor, telling his side with respect for the other person like Taylor does in folklore and evermore. And I adore Taylor at every aspect of her life
That is so wise of you to say that!
Joshua Bassett is Joshua TAYLOR Bassett. 😌
@@Natsu-ej9zq YES HE IS
im pretty sure that they are just their own person lmao not everything is about taylor
I think my only problem with Olivia was that she never addressed her fans and asked them to stop. Whereas Joshua and Sabrina both on multiple occasions were very clear with their fans in saying anybody bullying anyone was no fan of theirs and it wasn’t okay. But Olivia stayed silent. In my eyes that makes her partially responsible. Part of holding that much influence over that many people is using that influence for positive change and outcomes and she never even attempted to quiet the hate Joshua and Sabrina were getting that literally sent him to the hospital with stress that almost killed him.
‘Crisis’ always makes me think, since we know Olivia is heavily inspired by Taylor Swift, that she knew the benefit that villainising the ex would have in terms of relatability and popularity, so maybe hyperbolised the situation and didn’t speak out against the hatred being spread - which obviously worked seemingly in her favour.
@@taylorfearlessredspeaknow Taylor doesn’t know how to speak up tho. She let her fans call a black woman a monkey over a joke she was forced to say in a show.
@@taylorfearlessredspeaknow well just wait, Olivia might do a few apology songs for the next album, and those will capitalise on the drama too.
I also wonder how much of it was her decision vs her team telling her what to do. I mean she was so young when this all started I wouldn't be surprised if she just went with what she was told
olivia's song victim might shed some pov on this thought
@@taylorfearlessredspeaknow I don’t think Taylor is a bad person but generally she doesn’t know how to communicate her political beliefs/ Views with her fans and the general public. I couldn’t tell you exactly where a fan of hers called a black woman a monkey because it was through IG comments when the Ginny and Georgia drama was going on. Taylor just doesn’t know how or when to speak up properly. When a Nazi group was claiming her as their princess she was silent, when her fans sent death threats to her exs for no reason she was silent but when Nicki Minaj called out the racism and fat phobia in award shows Taylor spoke out and took that as a personal attack. The only way I could describe Taylor is selective which in 2022 for rich white celebrities just isn’t enough.

OMGGG THEY ACTUALLY DID IT!!!! IM SO EXCITED TO WATCH THISSS!!!!
if you ever get the chance do watch his interview with zach sang. its very long but its so so beautiful and super insighful into everything that is joshua as a person and all his thoughts. it'll help you understand everything even better. joshua bassett deserves the world after everything he went through.

an amazing interview!!
"I like it for the tea value" had me in stitches 😂
Hear me out... Sad Songs In a Hotel Room reaction!! I think you guys are going to love it productionwise and all the lyrics are AMAZING, josh's best work so far in my opinion!
!!!!
his more recent ep sad songs in a hotel room is also amazing, about mostly different topics. Its also more complex and interesting sonically
When you started set me free before secret I almost had a HEART ATTACK 😂 I’m glad you corrected yourselves… It made all difference!
I knowwwwww
So did I😂
I'm so glad how empathetic you guys were with his POV! As a Josh fan who loved them both when HSMTMTS came out and prior to DL, the new wave of Josh support has been very refreshing after such a hard year for him! (PS, the picture of them both at the premier- they both posted it. It was a wild night, but I think they were both acknowledging that the two of them were civil and over the internet narrative version of their story). Josh's latest EP just came out last Friday, so I highly recommend you listen to it!
you should def read his GQ article about his song “Set Me Free” it goes into depth about the song and explains the meaning, it’s really personal to him and isn’t just about Olivia
I think bonnie made a really significant point about olivia going for the *jugular*. I remember that being my main "issue" with sour, unlike a bittersweet taylor album where she creates a nuanced romantic narrative, acknowledging or leaving room for other perspectives, sour has a lot of accusation like "you betrayed me and I know that you'll never feel sorry" ... and it was sensationalised because she rushed to release an album once she was getting attention which I DO NOT fault her for, it's a smart business move, but it was also all *a lot*.
She called him a sociopath! And say happy and healthy when she knew he was hospitalised... Granted she never said it's was about him but also knew that everyone would assume it was
toxic ideology. she should’ve spoke up but she didn’t “rush” an album. she had an EP and already has other songs written so decided to add them on. trying to brand her pain from a breakup which is valid as a “career move” when it’s clear she’s been mislead by her management
@@blackscreen1268 oh ok, the impression i got from the sour documentary was that she added some songs last minute (like brutal) that weren't pre-written(which I found impressive because even though I follow her and her song writing to *produce* new songs in such a short time is wild). so to me it felt like she was going to release an EP but driver's license was so successful that she realised she should release an album because it was a good career move.
but overall I think this led to everything being overwhelming. I don't think she knew how to handle speaking up so she tried to let the drama pass, but I agree she should have spoken up even if only to say "no hate to anyone, this was a snapshot of raw emotion" etc. imo the album also feels one note, possibly because it was created in such a short time frame.
so long story short... idk I guess these are more of my two cents lol? I think you're right about her being mislead, but I also just think everything happened so fast that it was all pretty intense and my original post was just to say I think her lyrics went for the jugular because they were very in the moment.
@@elizabethjulia20yeah, the album was probably just because at her new success people would immediately want more music which she already practically had so she just went for it. i think the lyrics weren’t any more harsh or honest than what him and sabrina are releasing now too though
@@blackscreen1268 They we’re getting death threats. If anything they had a bigger reason to be angry about it than a simple breakup. She can always express her feelings but she said so many bad things about him despite that Josh said he would always love her and Sabrina said that they could have been friends in a different life. They were much more mature about it than her and yeah she’s younger but you can’t blame everything on that.
i cant help but love josh :( you also must do a gracie abrams or lizzy mcalpine video in the future their recent albums are superior!!!
yes yes yess
yesss 🫶🏻
Love this reaction!!
Set me free is my favourite of the 3 songs and it's actually not just about olivia but other trauma in his life as well like processing childhood sexual abuse. It really puts the song into a whole new light for me
You should've done his new ep!!!!!!!!!!! Sad Songs in a Hotel Room!!!
In an unreleased song by Olivia called ‘victim’ one of the lines are:
Let me be the victim of your perfect crime
Bathe in my blood so I'm not the bad guy-uy
It'll be in the headlines, all our friends will hate you
i just connected those dots after reading your comment. that's pretty f'd up of her, wow.
@@abneryates4304 this was written looooooooong before any of the dl drama or olivias success so its not at all as malicious as it sounds
@@chloechua8090 Idk when they allegedly dated, apparently they broke things off sometime in 2020 and this was uploaded to her Instagram mid 2020. So yeah, it was written before the drama but still within the same timeframe of when Sour/DL was probably being written. Also respectfully, Im not sure how it being written before the albums success makes it less malicious?? If anything, if it was written around the same time as her processing the breakup, it more accurately reflects her true feelings and possible intentions? Which makes it even more damning…
Again, we’re all still just making assumptions to some degree, but watching this video reminded me of that song. Imo, while I appreciate Olivia’s songwriting skills and can’t deny she is talented, her lyrics/vibe just come off a little immature and lack perspective/empathy (ability to recognise and distinguish between what she feels vs seeing things for what they actually are). That being said, I was probably the same when I was 15/her age hahah so it’s so understandable and valid.
@@chloechua8090 but this shows that this type of toxic thinking was already on her mind
@@abneryates4304 probably. i appreciate her talent so much, but it’s wild that this all came true. ppl want to say it’s only her management/label that wouldn’t let her stop the hate, but i have a feeling she secretly enjoyed seeing him get hated on after feeling so miserable herself. that doesn’t make her a malicious person, just an immature teen as we all use to be. it’s just fucked up that it was so public and she got huge from it.
WE NEED JOSHUA'S ALBUM REACTION
Yes!!!!
PLS!!
my issue did that yes Olivia made mistakes by not speaking up but it’s weird how some people are trying to paint her as “evil” like she intended to cause a whole drama when in the end she was still a teenager just writing how she felt
yeah but she should’ve told her fans to not spread hate and death threats on her account. she also painted joshua as the villain when he is clearly an amazing guy
Yea but the way she did that they are painting Joshua as a villain even more that Olivia plus like the other person said she painted Joshua as the villain
@@JayAllDayLong She never painted him as a villian. She was legit a teenage girl writing a song about being heartbroken. How people maipulated that wasn't her fault, she was just doing what any muscian does INCLUDING him.
@@mackenzie3403 Ok I didn’t mean she did it intentionally I mean the way she sung it made him sound evil like he wasn’t heartbroken and didn’t care/love her so I’m sorry if that caught your off guard and made you upset
@@JayAllDayLong It's fine. Im just saying people are villianizing her and her music when really it was their interpretation that made the entire thing more than it needed to be.
my boy is so talented. im so happy he is still here and helping so many people with his music and all the money he donates from it
Sabrina said it perfectly 'tell me who i am, guess i don't have a choice'

You should totally also listen to his ep Sad Songs in a Hotel Room that came out a few days i personally think that his song writing really increased(for lack of a better word it’s 2am) bring tissues trust me
YOU GUYS HAVE TO REACT TO HIS NEW EP “SAD SONGS IN A HOTEL ROOM”!!!
Every artist is responsible for their fanbase, not their individual fans, but their fanbase in general. You won’t see Joshua’s fans attacking Olivia, or anyone, ever. He has made it clear that is not how he lives his life and not how he wants his fans to live their life. She has not addressed any of these issues with her fan base, hopefully she does one day. We just spread the love. ❤
i adore olivia, and i agree with you that she should have said something and i hope she does bc better late than never? (this is also something that taylor struggles with, so liv might've learned something there?) i dont know. however, i have definitely seen josh fans attack olivia multiple times. i've also definitely seen the reverse, too, bc they both have relatively young fanbases. josh has proven he's mature, i'm sure olivia will get there very soon, and as for the fans.... stans are just gonna keep stanning.
while i agree it delusional to say they never hate on people when they have sent a good amount of death threats to olivia too. while speaking about it minimizes it it doesn’t prevent it cause it’s just word of mouth.
they’ve have a sent a good amount of hateful comments/threats to liv too, stan twitter will bring out the worst in everyone bae 😭😭
@@ciwyw I agree but we had the whole Better than Revenge situation which she later apologised for and she has now said how the haters aren’t her fans. You’d think that she would have learned from that situation but I think most likely it’s the managers that have stopped them from saying anything and she might not want hate herself. If it is her managing team they’re doing a horrible job and making her look bad. I literally feel guilty for listening to her music. She might apologise in her next album but I hope she still doesn’t make her look like a victim again.
set me free is so emotional and i just love it so much. I also love when you guys react to a bunch of different artist along with Taylor swift!

Josh DEFINITELY sounds like shawn mendes, I’ve thought so since the first time I heard him sing… and he’s also talked a lot about the inspiration Harry has been to him!
I know it's not the kind of content y'all do but I recommed watching Josh's interview with Zach Sang, it really gives a look into his perspective about the past year, the whole public situation, as well as a lot of other stuff. Again it's just his view of it; not saying his is the right version of events but also not saying it isn't either, there's always so many sides to every story, so this is just his. But I really recommend it, it actually motivated me to start going to therapy myself.
His interview with Zach Sang is soooo good. Josh is honestly such a kind soul and he definitely went through a lot during the drama. I really recommend watching the interview if you want more tea. It's long but it was super nice to just sit down with my coffee and hear the gossip.
When he says in Set Me Free "wasn't sure I survived, never felt so weak", he actually almost died having a septic shock and heart failure, after 2 days Driver's license was released. And he said he was sure stress had part on it.
And he talk about it in his new album Sad songs in a hotel room
Also, don’t know if any already mentioned this, but Olivia has an unreleased song called “victim” and she sings about how she wishes she was the victim or something! Don’t know if that’s about Her breakup! But it is interesting! Like I said before, regret is just as painful as heartbreak,
She probably left josh or did something that made him leave her and she regrets it. That’s why she was so sad.
I don't think all of her songs are based on real situations tho imo
@@noavm4090 true . She has said that as well.
this! also her unreleased song “ones i love” talks about how she messed up in the relationship. i hate that it was scrapped bc it would’ve probably helped ppl realize she wasn’t completely innocent like the sour narrative says
@@jennab5642 right!? She also mentions a few times that some of it was her fault. And heartbreak is a “two-way street” or something
I loved your reactions to this! It’s nice to see people look at things from his perspective and I think Josh is so underrated. It’s also insane that all three of them are so talented lol
Just gotta say Sour is not all about him, it's more of a themetic album, than about just one person. She wrote many of the songs before, and it wasn't a secret either, because she had released versions of those songs prior. Regardless, a handful of them were still probably about him.

There’s a part in ‘favorite crime’ where she talks about being to blame as well with “1 heart broke 4 hands bloody” and being his ‘accomplice’
That song is clearly a remake of "victim", which is very interesting. It's a previous song of her where she is the one hurting the other person and wishing she could play the victim instead... Of course 'victim' wouldn't have fit in Sour, so she remade it
@@giuliac9735 "the ones I love" goes in the same perspective.
@@giuliac9735 victim was a song writing exercise she was given by someone else
@@Charlotte-cu7sn how interesting! Where did she say that?
I believe all Olivia's songs are very 'embellished', and this is a clear example of that. She is a great songwriter.
I still see 'victim' as the precursor of 'favourite crime'.

I’m so happy that you reacted to this, josh is so incredibly talented and his lyrics in this ep are so raw and come from a place of blunt pain. I wish more people gave him a chance, hear his story and take it as it is because he too has something to say. I absolutely adore both Olivia and Josh, was a fan before all this drama and it was saddening seeing people collectively go up against one of them. They were both kids and - despite believing that some of liv’s decisions made the situation play out the way it did, horribly so - people definitely shouldn’t have gotten involved in what was a normal, faulted relationship between teenagers. At the end of the day, it was all a lot.
Thank you for this lovely reaction, found myself sharing the same thoughts and feelings. I absolutely love how you review everything so throughly, and go over lyrics while explaining the potential reason behind them. Keep up the good work!
I would really love if you reacted to Josh’s newest EP ‘Sad songs in a hotel room’, every single track is beautifully produced and the lyrics are heartbreakingly honest. One of my favorite josh’s project so far
I’ve been WAITING for this one!! 🎉
Bro i LOVE these 2 with my whole heart
You make me love every single song you reaaact to!!!
I've been waiting for this reaction! Can't wait to watch it!!
I always considered the first song to be about Olivia, the second about Sabrina and the third about himself and his coming to terms with his childhood sex abuse. It’s a powerful trio of songs.
Yes especially because in the secrets video he’s singing to a blonde girl!
the 2nd song isn't about sabrina, I believe Sabrina's sister was apart of that song making, and seeing as the subject of the song, Sabrina's sister definitely wouldn't be involved if it was something that could possibly throw shade at her sister
i love olivia's music so much, but i honestly think in her album there were a lot of low blows. like, even just mentioning him seeing a therapist: there's nothing wrong with that but it's his medical history, it's not her place to share info about his private life. and her calling him a sociopath, like wtf??? it's not something to joke about and pls dont use medical terms as an insult. i just think she was insensitive about a few things, especially seeing how much he suffered from it, like having literal heart failure.
olivia is just very immature. i try my best not to look down on her too much for it, even though a lot of her lyrics anger me. i think as she gets older, she'll realize she was wrong for how she went about a lot of this. i believe any artist should have the freedom to get things off their chest, but also the responsibility of controlling it and not crossing certain lines.
Well, Olivia also said that she lost her mind and she spent the night crying in her bathroom. So she wasn't in a healthy situation. People can't make healthy decisions when they aren't healthy. How many times did you want to hurt your ex so bad? And she was just a kid.
@@abneryates4304 why are you people so judgmental of a 17 year olds girl actions. she didn’t scheme for this. duh she is gonna be immature because she was still a child and made mistakes as does everyone.

You guys would love to see them sing just for a moment together!! The live version is amazing!!!
Omg yes! Love his ep so freakin much
great video!!! i love hearing y’all’s opinions on this situation!
Yay!! So happy you’re doing this vid!
In set me free, the lyrics in the chorus in comparison with the empathetic verse reminds me of Sabrina’s line in how many things “it hurt you so bad hurting me, you really came to me for sympathy”. It perfectly shows the two sides, how she may see this as him wanting sympathy and he seeing it as her taking pleasure in his pain.
Even though a lot of this is probably exaggerated for the songs, these songs changed the way I thought and felt about Sour too. Whereas before Sour was the typical “you broke up with me for a prettier girl!”, this new insight lets us know that it was more like “Yes I broke up with you but I’m pissed that you moved on so fast.” It makes so much sense for Olivia to wish that he was heartbroken even though shes the one who had to cut it off. Interestinggg
because she states how he was talking to another girl. why would she stay in that?
I think now that we have a bit of all three perspectives it would be an interesting time to do a "sour revisit" or "breakdown"... because listening to certain lyrics having watched the sour documentary + sabrina's album + josh's ep would be a different experience. not to feed the drama but just to think about sour beyond our initial reactions.
they should do that but first listen to sad songs in a hotel room bc i want them to hear used to it as well
I've been waiting for this fr!!
The folklore love triangle foreshadowed these events lol
What I can remember from Sour is that the narrator never claimed that the guy dumped her. The narrator said that they broke up, and the guy jumped so fast onto another relationship ("good for you I guess you moved on really easily", "aint it funny how you run to her the second that we call it quits?) with a "blond girl who always made me doubt", and that made the narrator bitter.
my personal belief was that, allegedly josh and olivia broke up in the middle of their relationship (based on sad breakup type songs they both posted on instagram in the same time frame) before getting back together for a few more months. i think olivia broke up with him the first time, and possibly for the dude mentioned in "secret" and now "used to it" from his new EP. i wouldn't be surprised if josh was the one who broke up with her the 2nd time to get with sabrina. but who knows, maybe olivia really did break up with him both times. its really screwed up of her if she really did literally cheat on josh. at least josh waited until they were broken up to get with sabrina. and olivia even said it herself... "i guess you didn't cheat"
I’m so happy you two did this! I usually dislike when people address the drama in videos but it’s so refreshing that you are truly empathizing with him and realizing that the sour narrative can have multiple interpretations, with neither of them being completely to blame. at the end of the day, they’re just two kids who fell in love and it didn’t work out 🤍
listening to his discography would be incredible he has so many good songs he is a great singer/songwriter
