Many people, including Koreans, are unaware that they have studied electric vehicles in modern cars since the 1990s.
Hyundai's first electric vehicle was not commercialized, but it was the ATOZ EV at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show, and 24 nickel-hydrogen battery were used as the power train, with a driving distance of 198 kilometers per charge. The maximum speed of the vehicle was 130 kilometers per hour, and it consumed seven hours per charge.
Then, in 2001, the Santa Fe EV was able to travel 160km on a single charge, with a maximum speed of 128km/h and a zero-back of 19 seconds, and there were overseas specifications in addition to Korean domestic specifications, but it was canceled for some reason.
It's unique that I've been studying it for 34 years to this day.
However, the reason why it was later commercialized than Tesla is that Hyundai Motor Company has been steadily developing internal combustion engines with the remaining funds, so it did not risk its life to focus on electric vehicles like Tesla, but technological evolution was delayed.
However, it would be no exaggeration to say that today's electric vehicle technology is on the same line as Tesla.
four wheel drifts are a thing of beauty, no matter what type of motor is making the magic happen!
Yep, this was literally like an RC car; instant power and wheelspin whenever you want it.
@drivingenthusiastaustralia Dumb question, do you think you would take ioniq 5 across the Simpson desert, as it 4x4? (Also hyndai should dons something to the design at the front so people can ad a bull bar if they want to go off roading in it)
@@aussiefurbymogwaifan6621 If you raised it up a bit and had some way of charging it, sure. It would probably make it.
@drivingenthusiastaustralia If hyndai want to sell this as a 4x4, then it *NEEDS* to be suitable for those who like to go in the outback! The electric isuzu and Toyota's own electric hilux (wonder if their iconic land cruiser will get an ev makeover?) and yes the infamous cyber truck, is giving us a good idea of what the deni ute muster would look like with an all electric line up. Like you should of taken it off road during your time with the car. But I think those blue and red buttons on the steering wheel specific to the "n" mode, could have something to off roading or something like that and something with that grille so a bull bar can be fitted and other off roading accessories. Like hyndai don't seem to release that you can't really have a 4x4 and a track car in one tbh. Not everything needs to be N or Nline (especially looking @ you, kona)
@drivingenthusiastaustralia and include a solar panel as an off roading camping accessory too
Those performance figures are hypercar territory, we all know the 0-100 time is great but the 60-110 and 0-200 are hypercar territory, the Ioniq 5 N accelerates quicker than some cars that are worth over $200,000-300,000 and over.
And slower than some cars worth 5k. What’s this obsession with speed.
@@benmann6323 I’d love to know what car that is worth 5k which does 0-100 in the mid 3s (in stock form, not tuned to stupid levels of power).
Numbers on paper sell, when revheads see how much kW and Nm and how fast a cars 0-100 time is, it sells, it’s also an egotistical thing, it’s like when you’re chatting with your mates about cars and who has what and how much HP my car has over yours, that’s why 0-100 tests and drag races are extremely popular on youtube, hence carwow going global and many other channels following in its cult. I’m not saying to go out on public roads and hoon and street race, there’s a time and place for all things, and tracks exist for this sort of fun but performance cars are all about power figures as their major selling point, if this was a Mazda2 or something in comparison obviously that wouldn’t be the main point of concern.
@@benmann6323wtf you been smoking? 😂
@@russell3436thing is no one keeps a car stock
@@twinsandboost191 that’s fair enough, but when someone boasts that a 5k car can beat a 100k car by chucking 30k worth of mods on it, that 5k car is no longer worth 5k, that was basically my point.
My i20N 60-110km/h in 3.4 seconds and this one is insane fast 60-110 in 1.8 seconds
Then you're not stock. I20n can't do 60-110km in 3.4.
@@davothegreat9990 no, it’s has mods with racechip GTS. :)
@@nlikos180 even still, that's an impressive time. Must shock a few people, i30n stock isn't even that quick. 👍
i30 N and Sonata N Line have a 60-110km/h time varying from low to mid 3s, i20 N should be over a second slower in the 60-110 roll on, that is still very quick, but the Ioniq 5 N with a time of 1.8 is hypercar territory and makes them look like a busted up Prius.
I can't wait for the Ioniq 6N to come out. Hyundai is really taking things next to the next level lately!
It will be very exciting! We've heard it will be a bit different to this. More info is expected later this year.
I hope it is not too expensive. 75k is much....but do-able. When the Ioniq 6n is even better...holy moly. I can't wait for it *.*
I love this thing. I even love the fake sound 😅
Strewth that 60-110 of 1.8s is INSANE.
And I thought the i30 N and Sonata N Line with a time of low to mid 3s was quick, this is hypercar acceleration.
Very cool. For anyone wondering, the 1/4 mile is at 31:13.
I WANT ONE 😭
Get one on hire purchase like most Aussies, it’s affordable that way.
It's wild that this thing produces more than 600 Horsepower.
Here in the Philippines, the only cars that come "close" are:
- MB A45 AMG 4-MATIC
- Audi RS6 Avant (though at a way higher price point)
- BMW M5 Competition
- Toyota Supra 3.0 V6
I think that engine audio feedback actually assists with driver control of the vehicle, as it gives you non visual queues as to the power and speed being applied to the vehicle. Thus, I actually think that feature has a very practical benefit. I suggest it improves driver situational awareness of the performance state of the vehicle. It essentially functions as a driver feedback reinforcement mechanism, which I think could help improve driver confidence and control. Basically providing a better feel and driving experience for the vehicle.
It's a fun way to make an EV that won't leave you bored, This will be perfect if the rear electric motor has 1 more gear for overdrive
Solid review mate, prefer your unothordox style over all the same other reviewers
Thanks a lot
Just got one in blue and I love it. Fun to drive and has great looks.
The ute comment is gold haha! Would make an epic tailgater as well, just like the ute!
Haha! Yes. Plenty of power for tailgating.
Wow Hyundai
I know right.
Being properly driven 💯
Made for it 👍
Love all the informative stuff! I was lucky enough to get one in the first batch that came to Aus. Been driving it for over a month now and everything you hear about this cars insanity is true! If anyone has any questions about the Ioniq 5N, i'm happy to assist.
I have asked this question on a forum before but didn't get a clear answer maybe you care to test it? As you can switch between only FWD & BWD & AWD do you think there is a significant difference in range?
@@pukecat9590 hmmm good question. I have only been driving it in AWD, and only once tested RWD. I've noticed while driving it sends most of the power to the rear wheels for most driving, and then towards the front too when you put your foot down.
I will say that if you drive in normal or eco and are "sensible" it seems very economical. I've never gotten it below 50% in a single day, and i only charge it to 80% at night as per what i've been reading on the forums to extend battery health.
Also, i will say one of the weird fun things i've found. is the regen braking. You use the shift paddles to "down shift" in a sense, and use the regen brakes to bring you to a full stop. Kinda like slowing down in a manual without using brake pads. Doing this well can add a few kms back to the battery each day too.
👍 This is my favorite !
Hyundai Motor Company plans to race exclusively for the IONIQ 5N.
And if the participating cars must use N-Shift, individual custom sounds will be created for each car.
It will be more interesting if the low throttle in D mode he will shift at 1500-2000 rpm like most automatics
28:49 it sounded like a jet thats dope af
Sounds to me you already booked yourself one Brett!
That Engineering of the virtual gearbox is a thing of beauty !! I have had engine ,clutch problems while aggressively downshifting in my baby merc , will definitely test drive this and maybe get myself some new wheels !!
Definitely the most interesting and engaging EV on the market, from a driving enthusiast's point of view.
Still too much weight for me - I'd be buying new tyres every week!
Tyre budget would be massive too, with 21 inch rubber and all that weight lol
You would potentially save on engine maintenance though. So I think it evens out at some level. Most of the performance features here come from software, and it does not degrade under spirited driving compared to moving parts in ICEs.
@@dfd6787and the fuel savings.
Stunning car.
I'm on the first ten list, let's go!
i wonder if you can make the outside exhaust sound louder?
You haven't got the worst job in the world, Brett.
Some days are better than others.
It's the only EV I'd consider buying but I'd still much, much prefer an i30N.
Looks like a good few days at the office tho Brett ;)
Put it this way, imagine if Hyundai offered a 478kW petrol car about the same size as this, with variable AWD and all of the drive modes etc. And for $111,000. I would very much like to drive such a car lol.
Yes, Hyundai always put on a great event.
@@drivingenthusiastaustralia that's a great way to look at it. To be honest if they made a petrol car like that (especially if it was manual) I'd be selling a kidney to get one.
I imagine they do - I was Service Manager at a dealership many years ago and they had a great culture then. Glad the local arm still has some passion.
진짜 잘 만든차라고 생각함
When you say it sends power, do you mean that it gets all 641 to the back or just whatever the rear motor can put out? - I doubt the rear motor alone (with minor help from the front) can produce 3.7s (more so in front wheel drive when it can only produce 200ish hp).
Is the artificial sound audible outside the vehicle or is only pumped in inside the cabin?
I guess it is.
Both
Is the 2wd modes just for battery efficiency?
for fun drive.
wait - the HUD isn't available in the US... OR the moon roof! :(
The cluster say 300kmhr but the max speed is 260kmhr.I guess only in Germany they worry about the max speed
Great video. Up til 30 mins ago my level of interest in electric cars was zero. This looks like it would be awesome to drive. If they can halve the price Kia will really have my attention. Mid 3 secs to 100 is bonkers.
Yep, it will change your thoughts about EVs.
If it’s electric then how does it have more than 1 or 2 gears?
Artificial gears. All programmed electronically. Lots of coding!
It doesn't. Pay attention.
If you’re gonna do fake engine noise, Maserati V8, Ferrari V8, V12, AMG V8, LFA V10, Audi V10, etc…
Hyundai 4cyl, um. No….
Really the whole concept of jerking the car to simulate a combustion engine/transmission is contrived and a bit silly.
I get that if you typically drive a non-EV, its familiar, but then maybe buy a combustion engine car, the real thing is better.
I fairly recently was driving an EV for a few months, then went back to a modded n55 bmw. It seemed stupidly noisy and seemed jerky. I did re-acclimate after a bit. But its purely related to what you typically drive.
I think this is a pretty stupid idea overall.
Better to embrace the EV-ness of an EV, and the charm of a real combustion engine car.
But is it still more fun to be sideways in than a true sports car like an 86 or a Cayman? 🤔😏
I assumed that during the lead up to driving this. But, honestly, with the sound mode on and fake gear shift, my brain didn't know the difference. You don't really get time to think about it all that deeply either because it's so quick and responsive.
any manual sport car would be more fun than this
@@damienfrizzell9394how would you know without actually driving it.? Typical useless youtube comments
@@fale892 because it has no manual box.
@@damienfrizzell9394Says the donut who’s never driven the 5N. Stop liking your own comment. 🙄🤦🏻♂️
How do all of these reviews touch on the design/style and not point out that it looks like a 12/10ths late model VW Golf????
mate, I started watching the channel because it was straight forward and didn't engage in bullshit. These latest underhanded comments about eco warriors and all that really needs to stop. Your opinion as a mechanic about the planet and what will and wont help it, is fukin irrelevant. Stick to the core values the channel was built on.
This is my new channel and the direction won't change. My personal opinion is EVs are not eco-friendly. Petrol/diesel cars are not eco-friendly either. But at least they are not being pushed and rammed down our throats like EVs are. Government is picking on the car industry in an effort to bring down overall emissions even though the auto industry is not the biggest polluter.
EVs have their place, for sure, but, my opinion is they are being marketed for the wrong reasons. EVs make sense in the city to keep localised pollution down. But as an overall blanket strategy, it is utter bullshit.
PS. When in this video did I say I was a mechanic?
@@drivingenthusiastaustralia No shit its your channel, its basic feedback from a longtime viewer, you seem to not understand that. Your opinion as a know nothing about the climate really is a pointless and detracting addition to what was a pretty decent formula. There are far more Petrol & Diesel vehicles being sold, BEV's aren't being rammed down your throat unless you've got your gob open in front of them. The Government is trying to get all polluters to reduce emissions, only targeting the largest at any one time is frankly idiotic emissions policy. The car industry isn't objectively getting picked on. If you are going to continue to engage in this unhinged and low commentary your website won't be the better for it. Hopefully you will wake up and not turn this into a Sky AfterDark also ran.
You can clearly see the weight of the car. It's absolutely not meant for the track or sporty driving no matter how much Hyundai claims you can do so.
My dude look at what they've done with the Kona, Elantra, Velo and the WRC, if they say you can track it, you can track it

Who wants the IONIQN VIC plates? Got a type R instead.
No thanks. I hate FWD cars.
@@JohnLee-db9zt yeah but I put some overpriced German cars to shame around Dandenong mountains, that’s how good it handles. I accelerate into the corner and out while these guys slow down 🤣 they just can’t keep up with me around the bends and I’m shifting my own gears. Anyway IONIQ 5 N is probably the best EV vehicle just was a little overpriced for me, that’s why I’m selling the plates.
@@Reptilianoverlord-jc8mt ioniq 5N is not overpriced. It's bargain priced. If other EV makers could build ioniq 5N, it will easily go over 200 thousand dollar. they can't put price tag as Hyundai does now due to inferior technolgies. Hyudnai is the only makers with the most superior tech in EV. Not even tesla can compete agianst Hyudnai in terms of EV platform and motor traction control tech. Think of Porshe macan EV. Not even close to Ioniq 5N in technologies but price is way over ioniq 5N.
@@Reptilianoverlord-jc8mt Generally, in current EV technologies and spec ratio, Hyundai should have priced ioniq 5N in the range of 250 thousand to 300 thousands dollars. that's how technologies behind engineered ioniq 5N worth. Current Ioniq 5N price tag from Hyundai is more of charity.
The price point is as insane as the performance. Is anyone who is looking at that price point going to go Hyundai?
Badge snobbery is real.
Most people would go for the boring Model Y Performance for not even half the fun. 👍
i'm buying this no matter what. i'll take this over german EVs for sure. my current car is X5. i'm done being a badge snob. this makes me drool.
I just ordered my Ioniq 5 N after 20 years of driving BMWs.
I've said the same comment on another channel reviewing this car. About $111,000 for a Hyundai EV hatchback with a dull, cheap black plastic interior. I can't see many people going for this. For just a little bit more money, you can get a BMW M340i. A far nicer, more practical, spacious and much more premium and luxurious car. And only a lousy 1 sec slower to 100 km/hr.
Do you know about BMW brand identity?
BMW is not a cosmetics car brand.
BMW is a sports sedan and SUV brand. And, BMW also used a cheap black plastic.
What a shame your opinion.
Having owned a M340i, I can honestly say it’s one of the most unreliable, money pit crap sports car I’ve ever driven. Current M is no longer the fun M of the past.
@@JohnLee-db9ztthanks for your honesty
