Yup. What actually happens here is that the cgi artists are lazy and just edit the model of a dragon slightly and make it a new one but it’s fun to put them together.
I feel the monstrous nightmare was also in that family as the species look quite similar and the nightmares defence is it setting fire to body. However its armour isn't too weak but that may be a result of having their only defence as a bit of fire, and as some dragons are immune to firer it needed better defence in it's skin as any armour could ruin their fire ability. They also have the same sort of wings and it's egg starts with a golden colour and finishes with a green one in rise of berk.
If you want to go further back all three had a common ancestor, but Group A had stronger scales that were resistant to their ignitable gel for their fire armor, while Group B had weaker scales - probably due to some random mutation - and they kept burning/eroding their scales to the point where they were no longer as functional as normal dragon scales. Group A developed into what we know now as Monstrous Nightmares. Group B went on to be the ancestor to Boneknappers and Armor Wings. Group B lost their ability to produce gel, but still maintained its special skin/secretion. Group C is the Boneknappers and Group D is the Armor Wings. Group C developed a secretion to help keep the bones in place so they couldn't be knocked off as easily (or they lost the secretion altogether), and Group D developed the gel into a substance that was more magnetic, which developed into the magnetic like skin for Armor Wings.
swag wolf Theres also a theory that Boneknapper's skin is covered with liquid that sticks the bone armor together and Monstrous Nightmare has skin covered with flamable liquid, maybe these two things evolved from one?
swag wolf Maybe the MonstrousNightmare was a common ancestor of the ArmorWing and Boneknapper or all 3 had a common ancestor so maybe some monstrous nightmares lived in places with dragon bones or metal. Or the common ancestors lived in different place so some became wyverns/MonstrousNightmares and used fire as their armor and some lived in places with metal or bones. They all look almost the same the MonstrousNightmare has the horns and even the the nose hook. I just really like this sort of stuff it's based on Darwinian Evolution

in dragon Legends,in the book of dragons episode gobber says "changewings have venerable skin so some of them use objects they find as armour like the boneknapper"
I HAVE AN IDEA! the Monstrous Nightmare, Armour Wing, and Bone Knapper are all relating in what I call the Armour family The MN was the somewhat Original and It blew up in Fire but as the AW and BK moved to cooler environments and lack of Phosphorus in there areas they can't blow up but still Breath fire the AW just uses a different flame material. The reason why their skin is weak because it is Fire Proof not Sword proof so they realized as you said they could "weld " Metal to its Fire proof skin and The the BK as you said can't find metal and uses Large dead bones to Terrify it's victims. (this is to long)
I like that theory also AW and BK fire probably uses magnesium, the pyroclastic flow fire of the BK is just a more inefficient magnesium flame of the AW that heats up dust along with the flame. So, yes out of areas with phosphorus into areas with magnesium, this probably means the BK and AW in countered the deadly natter a lot more (since they use a magnesium flame) than the monstrous nightmare with the due to the spine, BK going stealth and intimation, and AW going armor wing going armor.
I have a question. Just how powerful is the night fury in its alpha mode. On dragonapedia it says the regular night fury has an attack of 8 but toothless in his alpha form was able to pierce the defence of the bewilderbeast. the bewilderbeast has a defence of 50. If so does that also mean that all night furies are able to go into alpha mode.
Chrstian Seymour all dragons can, as said in a book, which name I forget, but all dragons have this ability to make their attacks stronger, like a boost of adrenaline, but so far toothless is the only dragon to do it.

Hello Future Me I have a question: So if Boulder class dragons eat mostly rocks and not much meat, could this be possible that their bodies (or some body parts, eg. skin) are actually built out of stone and minerals? Oh, and my favourite dragon ability is that Catastrophic Quaken can roll to smash everywhing on its way or do this during flight so it falls down and creates a shockwave
Hello again, Tim, Yet another cool video. I agree with with the idea that both species had a common ancestor, but I have one problem with you theory: Chronology. Metallurgy did not exist on a large scale until around 4000 B.C., when methods of working with bronze became more widely known. Also, we have never seen dragons with the ability to smelt metal ores on their own. Therefore, this "armorwing-boneknapper ancestor" must have evolved into the current armorwing within the 5000 years between the time bronze became widespread and the time of Berk (roughly 1000 A.D.). While it is possible for the boneknapper and armorwing to have evolved from the same ancestor in this time frame, it is cutting it a bit close. Evolution normally takes place over tens of thousands of years just to make a few small changes. The change in fire type is not a small change. The time frame for a evolution would have to go as far back as 10,000 to 15,000 B.C. Thus, the question stands: how did the armorwing evolve? The only way I can see this logically working is if the armorwing used non-metallic materials for armor until bronze and iron were discovered. Perhaps the armorwing once used a layer of pummice, a lightweight stone that melts well below the temperature of an oxygen-acetylene flame and can be found in Scandinavia's volcanically active regions. The melting point of pummice is surprisingly similar to bronze (990 and 950 C, respectively). Over time, mankind developed metallurgy, and the armorwings that came into contact with the bronze realized that their flame worked on that material too and used it. When iron was discovered, the armorwings saw that their flame was still effective enough to weld iron pieces together. So . . . what do you think, Tim? Everyone else? Again, loved the video, and good luck on exams!
Carlos T. Nice! I was wondering the same thing when it came to the Armourwings finding scrap metal around when metallurgy hadn't really been in effect yet 😄 I really like this explanation! Good on you for logically placing the timeline 😊
Hey Carlos! That's a really awesome theory as to how it fits into the metallurgy. Love it. There's a few historic discrepancies in the HTTYD world (for example, the Roman Empire still exists), so there's room for an earlier metallurgy, but your explanation is great. :) ~ Tim
One of the animators of HTTYD specifically mentioned that most dragons of the franchise are based on the main dragons, i.e. the Deadly Nadder, Monstrous Nightmare, Gronkle, Hideous Zippleback and Night Fury. This probably also means dragons based on one another could be related. The Boneknapper and the Armourwing are clearly based on the Monstrous Nightmare. This could also mean the three of them and all other dragons based on the Nightmare are related. More examples of dragons being clearly based on main dragons: Light Fury, Night Light and Sand Wraith are Night Fury based while Catostrophic Quakens and Hotburples are based on the Gronkle. There are also mixes, like Razorwhip body of a Monstrous Nightmare and it's head being based on a Zippleback while its abilities are of a Nadder.
Next dragon tournament idea, Triple stryke vs speed stinger chief, and maybe some bodyguards for the speed stinger underdog P.S: ALL HAIL MISHKA, OUR NEW OVERLORD

cool theory. I agree that a lot of that makes sense, though id like to note my own theory. Bones have existed ask lone as there have been vertebrate creatures. I think the Boneknapper might BE the common ancestor. (maybe making armor at all in similarities to an insect's exoskeleton or even like a rumble horn which looks like a beetle) Armorwings likely came about through evolution and adaptation centuries ago, when a family of boneknappers were taken or driven out of their home.(like the nest of speed stingers that developed webbed feet to cross water) The greener skin would have come about from their need to camoflauge in their new forested home and for a time, they probably still used dragon bones, but after Viking explorations introducing hardened metal in the form of weapons, which could break or cut through bones and probably used the bodies of killed dragons, taking the skeletons they so needed for armor. When that happened, they eventually used the scrap metal of old weapons laying around to make a new armor, developing the oxygen-acetylene flames eventually to better hold said armor together, and even fill in those gaping holes that the bones leave open. As you said, we don't even know what exactly a boneknapper's flames are made from, so it may not be that big of a change, and could have been formed from a change in diet from living in a different terrain.
in dragons race to the eage when hiccup disscovers the dragon eye and you first get to see what it does in the middle you see drago's symble the th fist
It seems that armorwings evolved from prehistoric bone knappers, taking advantage of metal made by humans. So it didn't have to be scary anymore so it became smaller and lost its roar

I think the Armorwing is half Boneknapper and half Monstrous Nightmare, even though the Boneknapper lives alone. it could have been the reason cuz the facial features of the Armorwing, to me, have some of the same facial features as the Monstrous Nightmare
Perhaps the boneknapper developed it's "boneness" to scare other dragons and be able to hide (as if the dragon were actually dead), and the armourwing used it's environment to hide and make it stronger instead. Both of these developments could be the result of the softer skin.

Briana Allbright sometime during the 1900's some congress officials said since most of the world was using the metric system and that it would be potentially cause the other methods of measurements to be forgotten in the future so they voted on keeping it intact so the method wouldn't die out. I remember hearing about this in my history class watching a documentary.
I think that the alpha toothless form is the titan wing of nightfurys since toothless activated this mode before he was the alpha since he used it while fighting the alpha that makes it a titan not an alpha form
A nice way of showing how a loss of function mutation in flame heat (reduced it) forces the surviving individuals to be better adapted by developing/accumulating fear tactic mutations. Well, at least one way of looking into it
Perhaps the green coloration of the Titan armorwing could be oxidizing impurities in the metal dyeing the skin and the boneknapper is the red-orange color is the normal color gained through Titan growth due to not having metal interactions
I would’ve thought of the armorwing as more of a subspecies of boneknapper that evolved to take advantage of scrap metal taken from human settlements due to being better than bone
The Monstrous Nightmare is also a part of this. All 3 started off as a single group. They got separated and evolved to this; Group A developed a burning flame that could burn metal, so it decided metal would be a good form of defence. Group B stumbled across bones and thought that bones would be a good form of protection. As it’s a weak wall of defence but a wall nonetheless. Group C had neither of those things, left with just its own body and abilities. It chose to focus fully on its own firepower, to the point it would ignite itself to keep others away. Because no one human or dragon would run straight into a wall of fire.
Good luck on your exams, my brother is starting his GCSEs now so that's pretty cool I guess, also don't worry if you don't upload as often we don't mind.
I like the Boneknappers they are adorable as newly hatched baby dragons. I should know I have trained Boneknappers in the Minecraft How To Train Your Dragon mod and some payed eggs. I went to get bones to get them armor. They were adorable. I used Bewilder beast bones I found.
Also a very good theory as to why the dragons don’t come to close to the boneknapper is that the boneknapper would kill other dragons for bones and they just wouldn’t want to die so they stayed away.
If you look closely at the skin under the bone on that episode on that Netflix show and the episode was called “Legend of the boneknapper” you can see it has green skin like the armourwing?
My theory is that one time there was a little nightmare that stopped growing and he and other nightmare had babies, some of them used bones as armor and others, generation to generation, used metal.
I think the Monsterous Nightmare looks pretty similar to the two, but not as much as the Armourwing or Boneknapper. The skull and wing shape is the primary difference I see
I feel that the monstrous nightmare is the ancestor of both the armour wing and the bone knapper as they both look similar to it. They probably evolved into their own separate species from the monstrous nightmare.

why is degrees F higher than degrees C? IK England was founded before USA so I guess C came first. it makes the boiling 30C look like a freezing -2C.
What if the armour wing is just a hippie,
Armour wing: Ya I'm original, I'm my own dragon
I really think you should have that as a shirt to the mishka and toothess fans ALL HAIL MISHKA
I never thought I would be interested in the lore of how to train your dragon
Could the night fury have a tighten wing form ppppllllllzzzz do a video on it
I think you mean Titan wing... not tighten wing
I think that the alpha toothless form is the titan wing of nightfurys since toothless activated this mode before he was the alpha since he used it while fighting the alpha that makes it a titan not an alpha form
The Thunderdrum and its abilities are one of my favorites.
plz do a draw my life like or comment if you agree
Hmmm... should I?
~ Tim
yep
Emma Bainbridge yep, he should
Hello Future Me idk
Hello Future Me yes plz I'm a big fan plz out me comment on the screen when you do it
Future, you have helped me learn what I know today about How to train your dragon
My dads birthday is tomorrow. Not asking for likes but...eh.
Mr DumDum same lol
your dad's birthday, this is really the worst likes scavenging, it's not even your own birthday
I feel like the Monstrous nightmare is an even more distant relative of these dragons.
Stop calling Americans heathens hello future me
He's just trying to joke around. I think it's funny (and yes i'm american).
the bonaper and the armorwing are both in the mystery class
Carter Wheeless I'm Canadian.
Carter Wheeless i think its funny, i use the Metric System all the time and my dad yells at me, that darn "heathen"
right it’s disrespectful
My favourite is the tale attack used by the triple strick!!
Good luck in your exams :). I'm doing my mock exams next week!
Good luck!

"What did the boneknapper ever do to you?!"
Me: kill them...eat them...use their bones as armor. I'm just rolling out some possibilities.
I would’ve thought of the armorwing as more of a subspecies of boneknapper that evolved to take advantage of scrap metal taken from human settlements due to being better than bone
if you look at the bone napper and armourwings feet you can see at the knee they both have spikes and at the heals
2 years late but yeah I saw that too
I always thought that the armorwing was a monstrous nightmare that was weakened and lost all its scales.
his snow fury thing kind of came true
The Monstrous Nightmare is also a part of this. All 3 started off as a single group. They got separated and evolved to this;
Group A developed a burning flame that could burn metal, so it decided metal would be a good form of defence.
I love the changewing as well. Am i the only one that is obsessed with the httyd soundtrack? 😂 I love watching your httyd vids :P
It seems more likely they were all bone-armor users until humans and our metal popped up.
That would also explain why the Boneknappers developed that scream and became bigger. That way they are even more terrifying
Changewings are cool to tim, and also I love your videos so I liked and subscribed to this video
My favorite Dragon ability is either the Skrills ability to store and shoot lightning, or the Night Fury's ability to dive bomb at incredible speed.
Good luck on your exams, my brother is starting his GCSEs now so that's pretty cool I guess, also don't worry if you don't upload as often we don't mind.
I feel theres something you missed in their similarities, there back claw, identical back silver claw
All hail mishka and you are calling me a heathen MICROAGGRESION
Other dragons are feightened of the bone Knapper because they don't want their bones stolen when they die
They both look like the monsterous nightmare
I have a feeling the softer skin would have been a result of them artificially armoring themselves rather than the reverse.
armourwings and monstrous nightmares both must be realted. They look so darn alike!
they're scared of the bone nappers because they might think that's the end of there life.
I like the Boneknappers they are adorable as newly hatched baby dragons. I should know I have trained Boneknappers in the Minecraft How To Train Your Dragon mod and some payed eggs. I went to get bones to get them armor. They were adorable. I used Bewilder beast bones I found.
The Armor wing kind of looks like a monstrous nightmare
Also a very good theory as to why the dragons don’t come to close to the boneknapper is that the boneknapper would kill other dragons for bones and they just wouldn’t want to die so they stayed away.
good video thank you for expanding apon this idea keep up the good work
You forgot the fact that the boneknapper must have a complete bone armor to have a roar while the armor wing doesn't.
If you look closely at the skin under the bone on that episode on that Netflix show and the episode was called “Legend of the boneknapper” you can see it has green skin like the armourwing?
Holy crap, you're actually on Wattpad? I'd be sure to check out your account even though your books are not typically my style.
6:38 “I really doubt the Boneknappers are just goin through a goth phase.” LOL! So funny!
Add on: 6:55 “I mean all it’s doing is wearing dead dragons as fashion accessories!”
that one dragon: he stole my grandmas rib cage
boneknapper: i need the armor though
also i like that they also have the same pair of horns, one horn shoter than the other:))
My theory is that one time there was a little nightmare that stopped growing and he and other nightmare had babies, some of them used bones as armor and others, generation to generation, used metal.
perhaps, instead of fear, its stealth... they can disguise as dead dragons, and explains why the chart says he has a higher stealth
Why do they look like a monstrous nightmare?
I always saw similaritys between the Armorwing and the Monstrous Nightmare. But of course, it also looks a lot like the Bonenapper.
I think the Monsterous Nightmare looks pretty similar to the two, but not as much as the Armourwing or Boneknapper. The skull and wing shape is the primary difference I see
I turn invisible when people aren't looking
Love the video, not so much the music. All the best with the exams!!!
Ah, yeah. I'm trying to find non-copyright music to use, but it's surprisingly hard. Thanks for you support!

Maybe when a bonenapper loses all of its bones it hunts for pieces of metal making it a armourwing
Maybe they are descendents of monstrous nightmares, and the nightmares just got weaker?
I feel that the monstrous nightmare is the ancestor of both the armour wing and the bone knapper as they both look similar to it. They probably evolved into their own separate species from the monstrous nightmare.
My theory is the boneknapper is a dead armourwing that came back as a second chance to live the boneknapper carried on its scavenging just for bones
I think that the BoneKnapper grew its own bones out of its skin into armor.
