Ninja Nerds!
In this lecture Professor Zach Murphy will present on COVID-19- Coronavirus: Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, Diagnostics.
What is Corona virus? What is COVID-19? Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by SARS-COV2 is a new strain that was discovered in 2019 and has not been previously identified in humans.
Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.
Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death (WHO, 2020).
As new information and research is published we will continue to provide updates on COVID-19 and ensure all of our viewers are kept up to date on the most recent data. We hope you enjoy this lecture and be sure to support us below!

Yeah maybe I would’ve passed my test first try smh💀
I have my PHD and doctorate in virology and I have conducted many TedX and University lectures. I just want to say this video is really good.
Do you see anything wrong with him putting total case numbers in the denominator?
@@RobinHoodII He got the math spectacularly wrong! Try this...
1000 people test positive for the virus. This virus will start killing them in about 20 days and will ultimately kill 100 of them. On day 19, what's the mortality rate? Let's see. Oh, we already know this! We take the # deaths and divide it by # of cases. Okay, then 0 / 1000 = 0% mortality rate. Zero!
This is obviously a complete failure of math and reason, but that's what he's doing. We're in an exponential curve, so a lot of those 153,517 cases are only a week or two old and on March 15th simply haven't had a chance to either recover or die and CANNOT be included in the denominator. They are not in the same cohort as people who died. Does this make sense?
Ok, then what should this number be? Well, it takes at least a week from the diagnosis to death, so the cases from 7 days before, on March 7th, would be the most conservative estimate. That was only 106,000 cases. So, 5,735 / 10,6000 is 5.5% (and most likely much larger number).
Putting 153,517 cases in the denominator is like saying that people recover or die the very day they get diagnosed, which is absurd.
Of course, there are unreported cases that we need to account for. HOWEVER, what most people do, they take the 3.7%, then assume that there are 10X more cases than reported, then divide 3.7% by 10, get a fraction of a percent and say things like.. oh , this is just like the flu… and then go to a party. This is a dangerous number not to get right because it leads to behavior. The virus is way deadlier. If he wants to speculate on the mortality rate, he gotta start with a much bigger number because 3.7% of CONFIRMED cases is literally a mathematical impossibility.
@@alexkoz no need to calculate mortality rate if there is O deaths ,yes?
@@barbaranowicki8833 what are you talking about? I gave it as an example of the math, not the actual numbers.
@@RobinHoodII said as a true Ph.D. This is high-school level math. What is is that you don't understand about it. He divides # of deaths by the # of cases. This is wrong!

@@RosheEntertains Regardless of getting the test, you should be evaluated by your physician if you have fever, body aches, confusion, lightheartedness and chest pain. Call ahead in case they want to separate you from other patients. Unfortunately, I haven't seen an educational video on how to boost immunity during this pandemic by:
- optimal nutrition
- optimal hydration
- going to bed earlier for quality sleep
- moderate exercise
- better stress management.
Where I live, people are ordering home delivered fast food more. It is sad health authorities do not comprehend the importance of an anti-inflammatory nutrient dense diet for immunity and lower systemic inflammation.
Further, healthy bodyfat % improves immunity++.....no one dare talk about that.

It's already been said by others, but I need to say it too. This guy needs to teach others how to teach. If my uni profs were like this, I feel like I would have absorbed two or three times as much info. Most of my classes in molecular biology / chemistry were just straight memorization of formulas, metabolic cycles, diagrams etc or watching the prof write notes for us to copy down. As a layperson, I can't say that I understood ALL of this, but you definitely helped me understand more than I did an hour ago. Thank you!
Same here!
Well done Zack! I was captivated the entire video. I sincerely wish we had more educators in university like you, teaching people "how" to think instead of "what" to think. You are truly one of the good ones. Be well man!
Oh my God I have never seen any one who can teach this unique way . What kind of brain is this !! Incredible ,
God bless you

Hooked....completely brilliant lecture. Clear and concise. I shouldn't be listening at work, but every five seconds I found myself drawn to you like a radar beam! Captivating! Keep on educating us Ninja Nerd, the World needs more of YOU!!
Wow, I wish everyone in the general public would watch this. Just amazingly great!!
dude, i just love you! you are the best teacher, the way you explain and organize is so easy and clear, i wish all the teachers were amazing like you :) tnx!
Absolutely ❤100% agree!
Rachel ga amen!
You have just made me fall in love with medicine again! Thx! I was pre-med and graduated with microbiology- researched HIV at JHU school of Medicine - never have I heard of someone’s ability to ease into complex systems as you have - real kudus!
Zack the world needs you so much. Please do not stop informing the world of the Corona virus 2019. Thank you very much!
Zack reminds me of a guy I was stationed with in Tech school. Highly passionate about what he was doing. Great job bringing real facts to the table ... I felt I was in over my head a little bit when he busted out big terms outside my field of knowledge but brought it all together in a way I could understand. Super talented teacher o7
I've been a teacher for years and can only wish that I was as good as this guy. Excellent presentation.

I was introduced to Zach's videos by my Daughter, who happens to be a first year medical student. Today I myself watched this particular video to understand the pathology of CoVid19, and it reminded me of my own med school days. But without any exaggeration I would say this lecture of him was terrific. I loved watching it. Thank You Zach, Thank you so much .
Dr Ijaz Hussain
she happens to be a medical student???
Thank you very much for your invaluable lecture. I am a family physician who seldom happen to see a patient with a covid_19 confirmed two to three days after in the public health center in Korea. You gave me a concept how to help them early enough understand and manage properly with limited resources in a primary care setting. Your lectures was the best one I've ever had.
This was SUPER helpful as a nursewho will be floated back to ICU for these severe cases. Thanks for making it so understandable!!
Thank you for Going on the Front Line to help all you can you are my New Super Hero!!!
You’re our heroes!! 🤗❤️
Praying for your protection. Thank you for your service.
A well paced, accurate review of the condition. The review assumes a certain level of education, but will reward even the most generally knowledgeable person. Not all presenters can combine graphics, technical data and biologic processes in a useable manner. Not to mention the appropriate sprinkling of physics and chemistry. Well done!
Amazing the way he explains, we all NEED him to be on the news channels!! Charismatic and hypnotic! I couldn't stop watching. Left me wanting more!! And so down to earth. He's an incredible instructor! Love this man!!
This guy is the greatest presenter on COVID19. on the web.
I am an RN. He is absolutely correct. That is what they do first in hospitals - check viral panel for influenza. Great video. Video is very educational. Thanks.
I'm a lay person but (unfortunately) fairly cognizant of many of these terms & concepts. Got lost a couple of times, but this has been by far the best, most complete & most instructive video about CoVid-19 I have found. Thank you!
This video is one of the most elaborate and explanatory for covid19. I never learned pathogenesis of any disease so clearly. Thank u so much for investing ur time in enlightening us.. This was exactly what i wanted to learn ❤
You’re the best of all time.
I love you Ninja Nerd.
Saving med students everyday
This is the first lecture I have seen in a great long time that actually held my rapt attention the entire time! I remember fondly my dreams of pursuing a medical degree.... The information is complete and very well illustrated for those of us who prefer graphic enhancement. Terminology is correct and not "dumbed down" - clearly for people whose education goes beyond high school.
Thanks for sharing and caring ! This needs to go “viral” .
Politics and politicians have to realize that medicine and potential decisions have to be made by experts for the good of mankind
I do love a good pun! 👍😆
This guy is a genius!!! This is what we need to get out to the public.
Everardo Berber He will discover a cure and they will shut him down!!
I just love how as soon as he start explaining something I instantly understand and learn it ❤️
someone give this guy a PhD certificate, hes earned it!
He won't get a,PhD certificate he will gain eternal death ,he will be judged by the Almighty
Put him in charge of the WHO!
obviously you don't have yours to know what it takes to get one
@YouSurf 2 Yeah, he is good, but 10/100 equals 0.1, which is equal to 10%, no need to multiply by 100, as he does, to get the percentage. Just a detail.
Except his data and facts are mostly wrong. He's late to the party and can't get it right. Kinda disappointing.
I'm not even in the medical field and this was very user friendly! Great teacher!!
Yes it's very educating, I have learnt a lot
As a non-medic, I found this fascinating. Wish I had trained as a medic with you as a teacher. Thank you.
Watching this on May 31st, 2021- things didn't change, things just got worse.

Fascinating.
Microbiology, physiology and biochemistry and cytology kinda helped here
cytology not citology. what's that? the art of citing and referencing????
it's physiology not fishology. and physiology of what?
some anatomie too

You make science sooooo freaking interesting. You're the best teacher I've ever had. Keep uploading mind blowing stuff. Hope I can meet you one day in person and discuss science. ❤️
Thank you very much for educating me today. God has blessed you with the brain to absorb and teach. If you could teach me you're a smart man I'm a hell of a challenge. I absorbed enough to stand n & Cher my experience I had. I will be telling many people about the ninja nerd. Once again thank you.
All i know is , while watching this video, i was in the presence of a genius,
everyone is born to do something well
This guy explains things so carefully. He’s very interesting. A great teacher!
Omg. This guy is a treasure. I am not even a medical student but this guy is a genius and brilliant.
I echo the comment of a RN below. Your teaching technique is brilliant. I understood all of it and learned so much. You are a born teacher. Totally humble - down to our level yet raising to yours. Well done !! Brilliant.

This is an amazing explanation. I am an electrical engineer but I can capture 60 % of his presentation just from the first watching. Surely can be 100% in the second round. Thanks Ninja Nerds.
Zach, you deserve more and more appreciation for your simplified lectures,a true mentor and guide in UA-cam world
My whole genetics syllabus got revise after seeing this !!
Too bad our children don’t have as many great teachers such as you! 💜
Cathy White Hey There! I’m a great teacher!!!
