    Ninja Nerds!
In this lecture Professor Zach Murphy will present on COVID-19- Coronavirus: Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, Diagnostics.
What is Corona virus? What is COVID-19? Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by SARS-COV2 is a new strain that was discovered in 2019 and has not been previously identified in humans.
Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.
Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death (WHO, 2020).
As new information and research is published we will continue to provide updates on COVID-19 and ensure all of our viewers are kept up to date on the most recent data. We hope you enjoy this lecture and be sure to support us below!

Do you see anything wrong with him putting total case numbers in the denominator?

    • @alexkoz
      @alexkoz 4 роки тому +3

@@RobinHoodII He got the math spectacularly wrong! Try this...
1000 people test positive for the virus. This virus will start killing them in about 20 days and will ultimately kill 100 of them. On day 19, what's the mortality rate? Let's see. Oh, we already know this! We take the # deaths and divide it by # of cases. Okay, then 0 / 1000 = 0% mortality rate. Zero!
This is obviously a complete failure of math and reason, but that's what he's doing. We're in an exponential curve, so a lot of those 153,517 cases are only a week or two old and on March 15th simply haven't had a chance to either recover or die and CANNOT be included in the denominator. They are not in the same cohort as people who died. Does this make sense?
Ok, then what should this number be? Well, it takes at least a week from the diagnosis to death, so the cases from 7 days before, on March 7th, would be the most conservative estimate. That was only 106,000 cases. So, 5,735 / 10,6000 is 5.5% (and most likely much larger number).
Putting 153,517 cases in the denominator is like saying that people recover or die the very day they get diagnosed, which is absurd.
Of course, there are unreported cases that we need to account for. HOWEVER, what most people do, they take the 3.7%, then assume that there are 10X more cases than reported, then divide 3.7% by 10, get a fraction of a percent and say things like.. oh , this is just like the flu… and then go to a party. This is a dangerous number not to get right because it leads to behavior. The virus is way deadlier. If he wants to speculate on the mortality rate, he gotta start with a much bigger number because 3.7% of CONFIRMED cases is literally a mathematical impossibility.

I am a respiratory physiologist, and agree this guy is an excellent science communicator.
Unfortunately, I haven't seen an educational video on how to boost immunity during this pandemic by:
      - optimal nutrition
      - optimal hydration
      - going to bed earlier for quality sleep
      - moderate exercise
      - better stress management.
Where I live, people are ordering home delivered fast food more. It is sad health authorities do not comprehend the importance of an anti-inflammatory nutrient dense diet for immunity and lower systemic inflammation.
Further, healthy bodyfat % improves immunity++.....no one dare talk about that.

I am an RN, and this presentation is "by far" the absolute best and most thorough overview of Covid-19 I have seen to this day. The illustrations, combined with the unique delivery style of the instructor, relays this vital content in a way that even non-medical persons can understand. The creators and the instructor are to be commended for making this video available at a time when relevant information and evidence-based facts are so desperately needed.I am going to post and share on Facebook, and the many nurses on my friends list. So you disagree with this MD pulmonologist from NY (see: ua-cam.com/video/YitWZj9QhdQ/v-deo.html ) who says it is not spread airborne unless in really close proximity for 15-30mins. If my uni profs were like this, I feel like I would have absorbed two or three times as much info. Most of my classes in molecular biology / chemistry were just straight memorization of formulas, metabolic cycles, diagrams etc or watching the prof write notes for us to copy down. I feel like this method refreshes what you've learned before, provides new information specific to this topic, and ties everything together with real-world applicability so that you can retain it. Dude's a whiz.

What makes a great teacher, your divided attention to the student in front of you. You cant do that when you a wife problem, a kid problem, a money problem, a death maybe, depression. It takes more to be a teacher than alot of other professions combined. I hate my fucking teachers cus even though I understand what they go through most of them take it out on the kids just like a bad parent. So yah you are right. I was introduced to Zach's videos by my Daughter, who happens to be a first year medical student. Today I myself watched this particular video to understand the pathology of CoVid19, and it reminded me of my own med school days. But without any exaggeration I would say this lecture of him was terrific. I loved watching it. Thank You Zach, Thank you so much .

Thank you very much for your invaluable lecture. I am a family physician who seldom happen to see a patient with a covid_19 confirmed two to three days after in the public health center in Korea. You gave me a concept how to help them early enough understand and manage properly with limited resources in a primary care setting. Your lectures was the best one I've ever had.

A well paced, accurate review of the condition. The review assumes a certain level of education, but will reward even the most generally knowledgeable person. Not all presenters can combine graphics, technical data and biologic processes in a useable manner. Not to mention the appropriate sprinkling of physics and chemistry. Well done!

This is the first lecture I have seen in a great long time that actually held my rapt attention the entire time! I remember fondly my dreams of pursuing a medical degree.... The information is complete and very well illustrated for those of us who prefer graphic enhancement. Terminology is correct and not "dumbed down" - clearly for people whose education goes beyond high school.
