All of Sam's points are cogent, but what made me an unabashed atheist was when I considered how the nature of the biblical God flies in the face of what we would accept from a human father. If a human father said to his children, "Worship me and do my bidding or else suffer a hellish eternity of torture. Oh, and if you ask me for something in return, e.g., food, water, healthcare, whatever, I may or may not respond. Just deal with it." we'd say that man suffers from extreme narcissism and sociopathy, and we'd consider his behavior child abuse and/or neglect. The idea that such behavior is supposedly the universal source of goodness and love is absurd on its face.
Everyone understands what he is saying. Some chose to believe otherwise. Religion defines some ppl. It's hard to climb out from this being literally bred into you.
I agree, it would be too uncomfortable. Who on earth would wanna pull themselves out of their comfort zone of this: they have an imaginary friend in the sky who loves them, if they love him back, they can spend eternity in heaven AFTER they die. Its funny how our own cognitive bias and dissonance are capable of deceiving the majority of the world.
I always loved watching Sam Harris and Christopher hitchens . No one could ever really chem mate them. Their level of logic the depth of their thoughts and and broad knowledge of history literature and philosophy .
Claiming that god wrote the bible to be palatable to the people of the time is just baffling, it means he is hiding his true feelings to appeal to his followers lives, which he sure as shit hadn’t done in any other part of the bible
Also, if God can't even tell his own followers that they shouldn't take slaves, how much of the rest of the bible should we believe in? Either God is weak and can't even tell his followers what to do (why? fear that they wouldn't agree with his edicts?), or God is not a force of Good in the world, since he endorses slavery.

Many good, meaningful things can be realized WITHOUT religious beliefs. As an atheist, I find much wonder and meaning in life and Nature. It's a highly individual thing

And when they tell you you're being ridiculous for acting like things in those books are real, you'd just be like "See what I mean?"

The definition of religion is that which we are bound. It brought humanity through the dark age and established the universities, hospitals and civilization as we know it. In a quantum age and with greater understanding maybe more of the populace will be able to grasp these truths, now rendered through metaphor and symbolically as in the Mass.
