Then again, the one time we see one of the kids practicing speaking it (Jace), his mother seemed to be the one instructing him. Once he got the confidence boost from claiming Vhagar, I could see Aemond studying Valyrian with a hyper-fixation, like his dedication to swordsmanship with Cole. His duty and Targaryen pride drive him. Aegon is the stoner-burnout who would have failed out of school, but his parents are rich enough to keep him in.
Lots of otto hightower lines could make the soundboard. “Coupling”, “cleave to rhaenyra and pray for her mercy”, “good” at helaena’s lil speech, almost any line in his tirade at aegon & criston. Rhys Ifans going crazy on the mic
They translated Rhaenyra’s high Valyrian from the beginning of Daemon’s dream: “It’s been said that Targaryens are closer to gods than men… In my eyes, you were a god. Daemon Targaryen. The Prince of the City. The Lord of Flea Bottom. I was an innocent. You exploited me and abandoned me. You sullied my name at court. You empowered my rivals. You tried to make my ruin. You put me on that throne. And you love me and you hate me for it. You created me, Daemon. Yet you are now set on destroying me. All because your brother loved me more than he did you. Aegon commanding Sunfyre in common reminded me of Dany commanding Drogon in Dothraki, which I quite liked! Establishes that not just Valyrian can be used for communicating, which makes sense with mystical dragon bonding stuff. (Next step is Sunfyre talking like Smaug for season 3)
I am not sure about the books, but in the show, the only reason they made dany command drogon in dothraki is because Emila got the word wrong and they needed to fix it somehow in my opinion the reason why he didn't need to use valyrian is perhaps their strong bond aegon doesn't need some fancy language sunfyre can kinda feel aegons intentions but that's just me I could be completely wrong and just spouting bs
I've always thought the "strictly valyrian" commands were kind of silly and it's gotta be mostly a telepathic thing. Maybe just another sign that the Targ's don't really understand their relationship to the dragons like Viserys hinted at. Also there's no way they can hear the tiny man riding on their shoulders when they're cruising at the airspeed of a cessna, it'd be like hearing a mouse squeak on your back as you skydived.
The maesters and dragon keepers felt it would be easier to teach Sunfyre the common tongue than to get Aegon to take his High Valyrian lessons seriously 😭😂
The fact that Rhaenys's headpiece in her final appearance looks like a crown was such a wonderful touch. The Queen that Never Was 😭🫡 you will be missed. *chants* weirwood paste. weirdwood paste
Visenya lives in her, ya goofs. It makes complete sense why the largest dragon (of the time) is also a tactical genius. I for one, am very happy the show is staying in line with the established book lore.
10:49 I really liked the acting of little Oscar. His stunned face as he hears Daemon, the look of "WTF did he actually just say that" and or "please help me I am very uncomfortable" at Simon as he is processing what he just heard. This was such a fun scene in a fun episode.
I find the audience reactions to the first dance fascinating. Almost everyone agrees that once the dragons danced, they realized how awful war is. Added with the fall of Rook’s Rest, we’ve reached the final point of no return. Dragon fought dragon and now the realm will burn. For weeks now, people were dragging the show for being “slow”, “boring”, and a lot of talking. In a sense, I was in the same boat. While I loved the dialogue and character moments, I was excited for battles and for the first dragon fight. But now that it happened, I wish we could go back to simpler times. When the biggest issue in the world was who Rhaenyra would marry. Or even the times when the biggest issue was how Rhaenyra would be treated when Viserys’s son is born (given he lived). War is hell, and violence is often alluring. It can be cathartic, but in the end, is it worth it?
I for one appreciate how moon tea is only served in a special citadel branded moon tea cup™ (I think you can only get them at the Game Of Thrones museum in Northern Ireland)
It literally doesn’t matter if Alicent misunderstood Viserys about the prophecy- the rest of the green council was already conspiring to crown Aegon, and they would have done it with or without Alicent’s compliance. If she had rolled up to the green council after Viserys’ death in support of Rhaenyra’s ascension, they would have laughed her out of the room. Her ‘whoopsie’ had an effect on her interpersonal relationships immensely more than on any politics.
@@fightingmedialounge519 Alicent was queen consort, not queen regnant. She of course holds a very high social standing compared to most, but that only means so much in terms of political power or sway. Her title is truly just ‘wife of the king’, and that title means very little in political dealings. She has scant few allies at court, and those allies have their own ambitions and goals that I can’t see being persuaded easily by the now dowager queen.
@@Scisssssssors didn't imply she was the regent. My point is not having one the main public figures for greens support aegon, or worse act to undermine his ascension, would prove to be a notable problem.
@@fightingmedialounge519 Obviously it would be a problem, but again my point is that there is not much she could actually feasibly do to undermine Aegon’s ascension. Even if she still believed Viserys unwaveringly wanted Rhaenyra on the throne, if the green council was still conspiring to usurp Rhaenyra she wouldn’t be able to do a damn thing to stop it even if she vehemently opposed. (And not to be pedantic, but I said regnant, not regent. A queen regnant is a ruler in her own right, a queen regent is the mother of the underage king/queen and rules in their stead until they come of age.)
I wonder if that was intentional, like the crown is too big for her because (as her younger self) she's still an inexperienced child who might not be able to handle that much responsibility?
I love how Aegon being the inexperienced dumbus that he is, opens up with a fire attack, screwing up his visibility and letting Rhaenys/Meleys take him on off guard.
Something I realized about the changing of the tapestry is that they only show images that are shown from the views of the public. So episode five will have an updated tapestry of the Dragon battle since it was such a public thing that a lot of people saw
I believe Rhaenys thought, 'the enemy king is down, if I go down it is a favorable exchange for us still, If I down Vhagar I will be the baddest ever so fuck it, all in, Valhalla awaits!'
D & D seemed to really not like having high fantasy concepts in their dragon show. I remember watching GoT Season 1 & 2 back to back with a friend in 2012, not knowing anything about ASOIAF. I thought it was really weird how the show went from virtually no magic to having magic.
Finally, we have achieved Daemond. Also maybe the reason Larys is so weird is what if he was conceived in the weirwood bed while his brother wasn’t? That, combined with growing up there
my submissions for the soundboard, in no particular order: "he's a twat" - young Aegon getting told off for bullying young Aemond "thought as much" - Crispin after getting beaten to a pulp by Harwin "where's the bloody maester!" - illiterate borros baratheon receiving Rhaenyra's note more to come besties x dragun time is the best time ❤
When Milly Rhaenyra says Daemon made her, I believe she is referring to her title because she will forever be known as Rhaenyra the Cruel. And he knows that’s his fault. I feel that ties in with the previous weeks episode when Milly Rhaenyra chides him for leaving her to clean up the mess as she sews Jahaerys’ head back on.
48:50 I believe Rhaenys' decision not to flee was not foolish. She had already decimated the battlefield and endured a fierce clash with Sunfyre and Aegon, sustaining significant damage. The odds of escaping Vhagar were slim, and her choice to repeatedly turn back was made with great difficulty. However, my main gripe with the dragon battles is the lack of emphasis on speed and agility. It often comes down to "I'm bigger than you, so you die," which is quite simplistic. Another issue is the conservative portrayal of the dragons. For instance, Sunfyre is supposed to be stunningly beautiful with golden fire, yet in the show, he's just another dragon with a gold tint. This change diminishes the irony of Aegon's character; he truly could have been 'that guy,' but due to poor decision making, poor parenting and malicious schemes, he has fallen far short of his potential.
Do the guys making this show even know what they’re doing? Why are we STILL getting Daemon’s visions in Harrenhal? We already got one last episode! I mean, did they learn NOTHING from the lesson of Kinvara? You have one scene - *ONE* scene - that implies there’s some spooky stuff going on and then you literally never mention it ever again! I mean, _come on._ At the rate they’re going, they might keep doing this! It might be very important to Daemon’s character, he might even have one of those character arc thingies. He might even have - 🤢🤢🤢 - a _theme,_ gods forbid.
Bruh, when Harrenhal came up as the spooky place my sis and I were so excited, and when he _kept suffering the acid trips_ We were ecstatic. Like, it sucks for Daemon, ofc, but after an entire series of the GoT crew fighting against keeping every magical and unexplainable element of this fantasy series it was so refreshing. I'm avoiding the book till later seasons so as not to spoil myself but we are having a field day theorizing how this affects Daemon mentally and emotionally, and where he'll go in all this. It's so nice to be able to consider how characters might act in the future.
I actually felt like I didn’t need to hear Rhaenys say why she would turn around to fight Vhagar. She was so against this war from the beginning, it made sense to me that she may prefer to be the first casualty so she doesn’t have to see any more of her family die. In the same way, her “off to battle again old girl” felt more like she understood that the Targaryens continue this cycle of violence, riding their dragons for conquest at seemingly every opportunity. It felt like she wanted to end her and Melys participation in the cycle of violence, either by dying or defeating Aemond, rather than survive just to see and participate in more bloodshed. Especially in a world that ultimately views her and her dragon as tools to be wielded at their expense.
The way Alicent drops the statue of the dragon and the wing breaks off is very similar to how Meleys bites Sunfyre's wing which makes sense because Alicent's incredibly cruel words to Aegon are the trigger to what drives him to fly out to battle
Daemonds chaos is caused by a clash between his internal struggle with wanting power, his loyalty to his family and his house but ultimately being a 2nd son in a world where the 2nd son doesnt get to wield that power. Its really wonderful mix of frustration. His final moment before death is the culmination of all three, and he symbolically sacrifices himself (another 2nd son) in the effort while fulfilling his duty to his family in war.
9:48 Glidus making the same stupid “stokeworthed” joke the same time as I said it out loud makes me think one day I can talk about dragons for thousands of people too
I think the scene where a young Rhaenyra says Viserys loved her more is a reflection of Daemon's subconscious insecurity and that he confused Viserys not being able to trust Daemon with how much he loved Daemon, as the older version of Rhaenyra explained to him in the previous episode.
We do actually see Gwaine after the dragon battle. It looks like he took up the command after Crispy fell and he is leading the rest of the Army through the hole in the castle walls that Meleys left. You can hear/see him right as Crispy is first getting back up at the very end.
I mean as soon as the camera turns to Aemond, it looks more like he is already putting his sword away before Cole even shouts his name, so he'd rather have Aegon live with his pain than him dying straight away
This. I think Aemond was planning on finishing him off, but realized if he was going to die anyway(albeit horribly) then there was no point in dirtying his hands.
Holy copium, Aemond wants him dead at this point, he believes he's a better heir to the throne (he kinda is, but that's because the bar is underground)

Daemon and Radagon of the Golden Order are the coolest King Consorts in pop culture. Also, do we want to agree that Sunfyre intentionally acted as a shock absorber to save Aegon from smashing into the ground.
@@zzrroott6459 the DLC seems to indicate that he is Marika's living flesh that she cast off in her Ascension to Godhood. That and the fact that Radagon was the original keeper of the Rune of the Unborn suggests to me that it's power is what gave him his life and free will.
HotD has some really funny lines like " fuck you we should have sent our dragons" season 1 had "sheathe that steel you twats" odd phrases for a fantasy world
When Rhaenys turned back rather than fleeing to dragonstone, I thought she was recalling Daemon's comments about her inaction in the dragon pit, and that's what pushed her to attack Vhagar despite the odds being stacked against her
As loathe as I am to defend Aegon, pertaining to his relationship with Alicent, she was a pretty horrendous mom to him even before Diana. The only kid she ever really seemed to try for at all was Aemond
It’s a bit embarrassing when Daenerys who has been in exile her entire life speaks high Valyrian perfectly and yet the Targaryen king of the seven kingdoms doesn’t speak it well at all.
It's pretty embarrasing for Aegon, yes, but Dany grew up in Essos, where everyone speeks Valyrian, even if it's only low Valyrian. And I'm pretty sure Viserys saw to it that she learned it, they didn't have much else remaining of their heritage and claim to the throne.
@resathe6760 honestly Viserys may have been shitty to her but he somehow managed to raise her with perfect pronunciation, grammar and everything, when he was only like seven, and apparently not even all the tutors in the world could teach Aegon. Kudos tbh.

there was some controversy regarding Vhagar being able to camouflage in the woods but I kinda disagree. It's a lizard so it's able to blend in with the environment and we don't know how far away it is from Rook's Rest, it could be a bit of a flight away hiding behind a hill or something. Not the most practical thing ever but I don't think it's that much of a stretch. Hiding behind the castle is a different story tho
Aemonds sapphire eye is a magical eye that allows him to see Vhagar as it seems nobody else can see Vhagar. That explains how Vhagar is able to sneak up and surprise attack everyone
I remember reading that large animals tend to be stealth predators, like T-Rexes would hide and silently stalk prey for instance (instead of running/stomping and roaring like portrayed in the movies)
Every dragon rider: Has a custom made saddle with a lot of hooks and leather stripes so he/she can fly safely in all circumstances. Aemond: Yeah Imma just put this old net on Vhagar's back so I can grab it if I fall. Genious really.
48:15 I think Rhaenys was thinking, either I, the most battle tested (somehow, do war crimes count as war? I think they do.) dragon rider with one of the largest dragons on our side, takes out Vhaegar somehow, or else my grandchildren will have to face Vhaegar, so I gotta at least try my best or die trying.
I think an important thing to remember is that Rhaenys doesn’t have to kill Vhagar, she has to kill Aemond. It’s dangerous, but all Melys needs to do is get a good fire blast on Vhagar’s back and Aemond is done.
Which is the strategy Daemon went with, there's no winning against Vhagar in a dragon vs dragon fight. Maybe only if Meleys, Vermithor and The Cannibal ganged up on her, and I still think Vhagar could wipe the floor with them.
Meleys alone had a chance, Meleys with either Caraxes or with Vermithor would have taken out Vhagar. Especially with Rhaenys and Daemon's experience together. They wouldn't come out clean, but Vhagar loses that 2v1 every time.
@@alastorcorvus It’s funny to think that one of the smaller faster dragons might actually be the perfect counter to Vhagar. She’s big, but all that power doesn’t mean much if your opponent can just drop down and kill your rider before you know what’s going on.

“It’s been said that Targaryens are closer to gods than men…
In my eyes, you were a god. Daemon Targaryen. The Prince of the City. The Lord of Flea Bottom.
I was an innocent. You exploited me and abandoned me. You sullied my name at court. You empowered my rivals. You tried to make my ruin.

@@blazeblade761What I want to know is: do dragons know how to use punctuation?
I've always thought the "strictly valyrian" commands were kind of silly and it's gotta be mostly a telepathic thing. Also there's no way they can hear the tiny man riding on their shoulders when they're cruising at the airspeed of a cessna, it'd be like hearing a mouse squeak on your back as you skydived.

All Rhaenys was missing was an anime-style inner monologue before turning to face Vhagar.

Not having the queen on side would be a big issue.
@@Scisssssssors there's a fair bit she can do. Such as helping aegon escape since he doesn't want the crown.

@grumpysphinx4911 I agree, during Agon's coronation, you can see the crown is also too big. (Lol or maybe the prop department messed up)

I mean, _come on._
At the rate they’re going, they might keep doing this!
Sadly I've seen people unironically say they're tired of Daemon's visions.
