YAMAHA PSR SX900 - Woody first impressions review

- My review and demo of the new YAMAHA PSR SX900 arranger keyboard workstation. I've owned it for one week since the unboxing and used it quite intensively and made a number of videos and performances to Instagram. I thought you might be interested in hearing my first impressions and opinions on this keyboard (budget model of the YAMAHA GENOS and bigger brother to the new YAMAHA PSR SX 700). We'll draw comparisons to the previous models I owned, YAMAHA PSR S970 and I'll perform a couple of songs for you to demonstrate the styles and synth sounds.

Thank you for your genuine reviews as always
Don’t really care for these kind of keyboards but stayed for the Fast Thoughts jingles 🥳
haha, my cunning plan worked!
@@WoodyPianoShack it was a very cunning plan indeed!
Woody Piano Shack Sir, Please make more demo about Organ Patches, Rhodes & EP of SX 900.Thanks..
A very Good and Honest Demo, thank you Woody.
I truly like this video, & I'm going to buy this Yamaha PSR SX-900! The sounds are amazing!!
I own both s970 & sx 900 at this moment and absolutely agree with your comparison. Thank you a lot for your videos!!!
that's nice to get some confirmation, it's been a while since I owned the 970 so not able to do direct comparison, relying on memory
Hi Woody good video as usual. I have seen a demo of this keyboard at a local dealer with a Yamaha pro doing the demo. I know he was trying to sell us one of these, part of the spele he told us was that the intros and fills etc were far removed from the Psr 970 ( I bought a Psr970 too in a sale last January) and far more usable and based on the ones on the Genos. It will be interesting to see if you find that, by the way the demo guys seem to target older customers, a lot are interested in the old types of music the younger guys do not play. I like quite a lot of modern music and like jazz and blues, I also have a Roland FP30 Piano I bought recently, I sold my Yamaha XF7 synth to raise the money. I am also learning to play guitar, at my age (71) I need to keep my little grey cells active.
The announcements were EPIC epic pic ic c, OMG!. :-) I can see a fair number use cases for this keyboard, and it sounds pretty good. Also, your short demo sequences where quite great and really emphasizing your point that these arranger workstations aren't about playing the latest yodel with a simulated Schuhplattler band.
Tried one of these out earlier in the year. Only had a bit of a doodle in a showroom but there is some good stuff on it at a glance. One of the sound categories that stood out to me as particularly nice on this keyboard was actually the guitars.
I'm considering buying a MODX7 for the sounds and for the great drum kits and patterns ... Now you're making me consider this one as well!
Nice tutorial and look at this keyboard
Thanks Woody !
Great video.
Cool harmonizer vocal effects!
Great video, I try and get the most out of my sx900 always editing the sounds to make them richer, have a modx6 but never got on with it, but miss the aftertouch like I have on my Yamaha organ (see my UA-cam) tempted to get a Genos 1, keep up the good work ❤
I am looking to buy. You have helped me make a decision. I will buy.
Glad you touched on the piano sound and glad you felt it was good. That's what I care about. At a store I did notice the elec pianos on the Yamaha DGX670 were weak. Thank you for your reviews.
I use a MO-DX into the line in on my arranger to get all the missing EP sounds. It's also good for layering extra pads.
Thanks for the review. Nothing is perfect!. If I had not the Genos, I would probably get one of these. The good thing is that Genos will be updated soon to software 2.0, adding Chord Looper and lots other goodies
Thanks for the summary. Valid points. Please, please make videos of your mentioned unconventional use cases.
I like the video good informnation for the next video please show to us the pianos and the guitars
Having a montage 7 that mainly stays in its' case, I can't wait to get my hands on the sx and yes it's very hard to choose between the awesome sounds of montage and take the psrs950 to church now and than where I use it to make ppl dance and pray with its potencial and easy of use.. ppl still think arrangers are the archaic technology of back in the days.. the one man band lives again and to nothing but the audience pleasure.. that the sole reason of a musician.. BTW love your videos and your option of taking the arranger shows how much of an entertainer you are sir.. thanks for all the vids.
The screen is far better when we get a change from the used to interface we will feel difficult but it doesn't mean new one is bad.
It's a day and night different between previous interface and now sx 900 is more advanced than any of the keyboard in its price range😊
I haven't gotten used to or fully explored my PSR S975 and now they came out with this thing. My pride and joy is now outdated before I can have Woody piano shack fun levels with it! You should do a final video of this keyboard where you do an intense demo playing all sorts of songs from different genres like you did with S970. That was fun. Keep up the good work, Woody.👍
it's hard to keep up, in two years the SX900 will probably be replaced!
Hello everybody. I think that you can Import the Audio Styles from the other Models in this Workstation. I have read About that somewhere
Re. Touch screen... Yes no good on fly but with a more compact control panel than Genos it's fine and the close up assignables are simply great!! ...nice assessment ... thanks
Top of the morning Woody , First track sounds brilliant , nicely played too , Nice start on track two , trippy sounds , big like ! , The bloke singing is a head wrecker , lol , I think you need more time with SX900 , there is still so much power inside for you to discover , all the bread and butter voices and styles can be tweeked to sound much better , When you start using Expansion packs you will see a big difference and unleash a whole new world of sound , You will be amazed !!! , I think you will be making a lot more videos on this subject , I think your videos so far are excellent , honest and not a sales pitch like all the other videos on UA-cam promoting the SX900 , Well done Woody , really enjoyed this one and will be watching out for your next update on this keyboard , enjoy your day over there and have fun with the new SX900 !!!!
Hi AK! Thanks for the comment, much appreciated from a skilled and pro arranger user! you're right, this might be the first demo and review from an independent youtuber? although keep in mind, it is on loan to me from the manufacturer...
Great comment on the touch screen, never owned one myself but a friend gave me her Korg Krome for a few weeks so I could teach her how to use it... and found the touch screen to be very awkward compared to my hardware synths knobs and sliders. I would never attempt in a jam video to use a touch screen slider or knob to tweak on the fly. So is it faster to program with a touch screen or a button driven screen???....still faster for me to program a button driven screen for accuracy and the lack of awkwardness. My Casio XWP1 is a deep dive menu synth, but with my right hand on the navigation buttons and left hand pushing all the other buttons, I can get around fast but the data dials are not good compared to a conventional knob for fine adjustments, there should be a data dial and a fine tune knob to make the menu synth tactile friendly.
Would you please compare sound of Yamaha PSR SX900 with Yamaha MODX? There are not many people who own both of them and that’s why there is not video that compares sound of Yamaha’s arranger keyboard with MODX or Montage. Thanks in advance!
How would this keyboard compare to Tyros 5 / PA1000. I need to find a replacement for my vintage SY85. Main focus: fully fledged on board sequencer & Sounds.
Many thanks.
Thanks for the fun videos. Just got the SX900 and wondered if the chord looper will work with a keyboard bass line in left hand alone, and comp chords in the right? Haven't had time to play with that feature much. Thanks!
you're welcome, yeah i think it would, just mute the accompaniement parts you don't want and play them yourself. the chord looper was cool!
Woody the Audio styles are not only included but expanded!!! Check again 😆
Great video, Woody, and you’re having fun making music, which is fun to watch. I would mention also mention a big improvement over the 970 is adding the third voice layer. I think that adds a lot of flexibility switching quickly between voices. Also, hopefully, you’re working on that PIP idea of the main screen, so we can see what’s going on there as well. Cheerio.
thanks for the comment, yeah the third voice I find to be too much in a layer, but for switching between three alternatives, that's a nice advantage!
MrPlaneTalk hi, other than the 3rd later is there something more than Psrs970 to make one want to spend so much??
Appreciate the honest reviews, have you played the Korg PA 1000 how do you compare it overall to this? Thank you
thank you, never come across a PA series
Woody, you're the best...!!! :-)
so sweet, thank you
How are the organ sounds on this? Is a synthesizer (Montage) better for organs?
Hello! I just wanted to express my thanks on making such informative and entertaining videos. You really do go in-depth and always seem to talk about the things that really are important. You are also very literate and that's always nice to see. I realised I haven't subscribed to your channel yet so it was about time I corrected that injustice!
If I may, I do have one question. I have had a Roland GW-8 some years ago but had to sell it to financially help someone. I haven't had a keyboard since then and I really feel like I could make some music with it. I sing and I play an acoustic guitar and some local folk instruments. Anyway, would you say it is worth buying the PSR-SX900 now or is there a new model on the horizon and it is better to wait for the new model to come out?
Cheers & best wishes from Croatia!
cool, nice feedback much appreciated,, cheers anton
There is a snobbery about arranger keyboards and the auto-accompany being anti-artist. I program my own styles from scratch on arrangers, I also program sequencers like 707's, Electribe's, Casio XWP!, and drum machines.....what is the difference???.....The arrangers have a much more powerful sequencer (pattern sequencer) than any other high end beat box. Using the variation, fills, and intros and endings exactly the same as any other beat boxes tracks or mutes. The programmed final product is not any different, so why the hate on arrangers I don't know? Just now sequencers are beginning to catch up to arrangers by including chord progressions, but the high end beat box is still limiting you to as few as 1 measure (16 step) or at most 8. Even my cheap Casio has a 16 measure (256 step) sequencer with all the time signatures like 7/8s or 5/4's. So if you are making pro music with a beat box and making money, remember it is just a different name of equipment, not a different way of making music as with an arranger.
I agree . I think it's the fact that on most arrangers you see words like ' Ballroom , Latin, Woodwind, Accordion etc. and to some this just doesn't appear 'cool ' . The fact is as you say that arrangers are great composition tools and results can, if desired be exported to a DAW . When compared to the amount of work that would be required to achieve the same result in a DAW, arrangers are a gift. Hopefully the new touch screen approach , where all these nasty words are hidden will make them more acceptable . I note that the new Roland Jupiter X has an 'intelligent arp' and it produces an arranger type accompaniment at times .Have a listen at the 6 minute mark on the included link.
ua-cam.com/video/7guKo-f0OjE/v-deo.html
Take care , Kieron
You program your styles, then jam while trying out different chord progressions, changes and melodies, ending up with what you like most, which you can further polish elsewhere or use as a demo. They seem especially useful for soundtracks and other long songworks where you're supposed to keep with the theme, where you can futher modify, rearrange and backtrack while keeping with the essence. That's my unexperienced take, at least.
How does the S. Art Piano sound on this keyboard behave compared to those on Yamaha digital pianos(e.g. P515). Does the keyboard produce sympathetic/cabinet resonance while playing?
Hi woody. How would you compare this to the korg pa1000? Which is better and what are the differences please
Channelling Cat Stevens with fast thoughts jingle ...
:-)
Hi Woody, great video!
A more general question for you.
As a beginner can I ask when playing the Sx900 as a Piano, how much do you miss the extra keys from a full length keyboard line the Genos?
I don't miss them at all when playing 61 key arranger or synths because I don't use the whole range on that type of keyboard, on a digital piano I like to step up to 73 or 88.
Do we have style recommender function in SX series as in S 975 ?
Hi Woody
I’ve been following your channel since the early days which prompted me to upgrade to a PSR S970. Is the new SX900 missing some features from the S970 and do you think it’s worth an upgrade just to get some of the new features
i can't comment on if it's worth it for you or not, all depends which features you think are important and the cost vs value of upgrading!!
Hi Woody, I liked this video particularly because of the underlying humour you put into it. And I'm surprised no one else has commented about it. Well done, I think you satisfied Yamaha's expectations, and maybe got a few extra followers. I know arranger keyboards are not your cup of tea. Can we go back to the inspiring videos now?
they are my cup of tea, i've owned quite a few and this one is fun and inspiring, I can't speak for the rest of you tho! :)
@@WoodyPianoShack You're video today on synthwave with this keyboard convinced me. I was wrong, arranger keyboards are your cup if tea. Maybe it was because of the fast thought numbers, they were a bit cheesy. 🧀😄 Anyway I love your channel!
Hey Woody, can you show a video of the PSR SX900 Styles in combination with a Draw? How to edit styles in your Draw?
Great summary and presentation. I wish my Tyros 4 had the Chord Looper, but there isn’t enough overall difference to consider changing.
I think Tyros is getting that through firmware update.
@@mrityunjaytripathi5588 Really? Where did you see this, I just did a quick internet search and could find no reference to this. I can imagine that the Genos might be updated to have it, I'd be very surprised (but delighted!) if they applied it to Tyros 4.
@@philwilkes222 sorry, my 'thinking' was wrong it seems! The updates are it seems for MODX and Genos.
@@mrityunjaytripathi5588 No problem, thanks for the clarification
Hi Woody, firstly yet another great video :) I have a couple of questions, have Yamaha removed the Video Out feature as I can't find it anywhere. Also regarding the drums, you touched on this but very briefly. I am also trying to find out more about the drums as I can certainly notice a difference between those and the ones in my S975, they do sound better although I don't know why they removed the Audio Styles either. I hope Yamaha release them for download a bit like they did for the Genos releasing the T5 Audio styles for download. All the best,Danny
the previous audio styles are available for download, and can be installed as an expansion, also video out is there, but over USB, have no idea how I connect that to a VGA monitor...!!?
Woody Piano Shack Hi Woody thank you for the reply, where would I get those Audio styles from for download? Are these the S970’s audio styles or the T5 ones ? Yes I agree about the monitor, we’d have to use the latest monitors that have the USB slots.
One easy question...I have s950 so it’s an a big difference between mine and sx 900???
I really want to be able to play an actual piano (as well as a keyboard), so I got an MODX with 88 weighted keys to that end, rather than the PSR. I'm still glad I made that choice, as I can still get amazing keyboard sounds, and at the same time input my ipad (Cubasis DAW, or myriad Apps), PC (DAW, vsts, self created backing tracks etc), Looper, and all my acoustic instruments directly into the back of my MODX. I do have an old PSR (my first intro to keyboards) and it is still a lot of fun, but overall I now get more satisfaction from making my own tracks and learning to play both hands, arrange music etc. I guess it depends on where you are in your musical journey, and your ambitions as to which keyboard is going to best for you.
great video .. just a thought though.. with arranger keyboards why isn't there any 76 and 88 key versions ? I have the PSR-S670 and kept on falling off each end.. so I ended up with getting the Montage 8 and MODX8 for my studio and for gigging.
guess that's what the genos is made for...
7:02 Actually a chord looper was more or less standard on Yamaha keyboards from the late 80's and 90's. Kind strange the feature got dropped.
There is a other feature found on some late 80's Yamaha's that seems to be missing in action for quite some time now. When active the keyboard started to play something like horn stabs or a melodic fill whenever you stopped playing the right hand lead sound for a bit. I always found this a nice and musically useful feature.
Thanks for your detailed presentation. But I do have a question about the keys of PSR SX900. Does the black keys rattles/clicks? I heard it makes noise? Is this true? Please share your views.
check the forums on psrtutorial, seems to be a common issue.
Great video information I would like to know if there are a big difference between Yamaha 975. Thanks
i don't know for sure, I think you need to check the features and specs on the product pages. there are differences and improvements, some things I liked more on the 970. you'll need to figure out what's important to ***you***, good luck!
I know for sure there's much more memory for "using" and "save"data.
Cool review - was looking for one that I like - and found it!
I recommend 2 changes:
Play some Irish tunes!
Drop the beard :)
I guess I'm still biased about DGX-660 over the new PSR-SX900, but your demo shook the tables a bit... will wait some more time
thanks!
Demo request: Create your own style (drums part/fills/intro etc , bass line and arpeggios) would be great to see if you could recreate your Ableton Fleur Blind instrumental using only the arranger.
Tryros 5 orPSR SX900 in 2019? Loving your channel
Tyros 5
Hello Woody. Great review. I own a sx900 and agree with you on your thoughts. Also, wanted to ask you a question about the amount of difference in sound quality of the instruments alone, between the sx900 and the MODX 7. For example, do the Pianos and EP on the MODX sound much richer than the sx900 or its just marginal or is it otherwise?
thanx for the comment, pretty marginal I would say, both keyboards have effect processing and allow you to adjust the sound to make one sound like the other, or tweak it to your liking, FX on SX are surprisingly powerful.
@@WoodyPianoShack Thank you Woody ... I just wish there was a way to have the reverb at zero by default for every instrument selected. Although, there is a fast way of manually turning reverb off also by assigning reverb to one of the knobs and then just turning it down to zero.
I just think zero reverb lets the instrument show its true sound quality and texture.
Thank you Dave for the sad news on VH2
RE: LCD screen PSR SX900 I am having a big problem with the screen Contrast because at one particular ankle (when It is placed on a second tier keyboard stand ) I lost screen clarity in the sitting position) I was able to change brightness in the menu however, I could not find how to adjust it contrast !!! Do you know a trick to adjust screen contrast ?
no idea, sorry
Hi Woody, may I know what is the WAV ROM sample memory size for the sx900 inbuilt voices?
i don't know, have you checked the specs?
can you share how you setup high quality sound from the mic, the keyboard, without any noise. what are all your components of your home studio ?
i have done some studio tours in the past, and have been working on a guide to recording synths. it's extremely challenging to do it well with good results, and requires a lot of care and effort.
Hi Woody like the video (Cute) But so far I like the MODX better need more demo's on this unit CHEERS !
you're right about that, i'll dig into the new firmware when I get it
Ooh ... Imagine the "Fast Thoughts" harmonized in a minor key...
Hi woody, can I connect my other keyboards to the back of the PSR SX900 and patch the total audio out towards my pc using USB audio?
Mono inputs will work, not stereo, as the SX900 has only 1 input jack. And no, the SX900 does not have a built-in audio interface, you will need to purchase an external one if you want to record it into your computer.
You said you could not find decent electric piano sounds in it, but actually there are enough good presets and you can edit them for your taste and store them.
yes, you can coax some out with some effort!
What is the biggest drawback of this keyboard compared to similar keyboards from Korg and Roland? Is it the lack of.aftertouch?
Woody, I'm looking for a demo of the vocal harmony features of the PSR-SX900.
no plans myself to do that, as i'm not a singer
we want to hear a demo of the VH2 harmonizer in trio modes and tracking when power singing dropouts vsv TC helicon...has it been updated from previous models?
power singing dropouts? I don't even know what that is, I might be the wrong guy for that demo... :)
Woody I am a power single act...playing an arranger and singing almost every song..
when VH2 is used on a Yamaha you have to sing directly on the mic center or you get dropouts especially using trio VH settings..a power singer is someone who is simply a very strong vocalist when playing. The TC helicon units used on Korg, or separate units has superb tracking at any angle your on the mic...hope this helps explain.
@@ConeyIsland1952 I asked Yamaha, if the Harmonizer had been upgraded because the one on my 970 is rubbish and so was my PSR 3000. \they said it's the same system from the 970.. The Korg PA 1000 has the TC helicon which is a great. It's a pity the Korg is not very friendly in a live situation. I play a Korg 600 and the touch screen isn't the 'great thing' people would like you to believe. I'll stay with my 970, or get a 975. They should be discounted soon.
This keyboard looks like a lot of fun! And to build on other comments and share my humble little opinion on the matter. Who cares if someone uses an arranger keyboard for something like drums? A lot of us are just sequencing drum samples in a step sequencer/piano roll anyways. Maybe if they were using it for something like heavy metal and its myriad subgenres, I'd understand the dislike. At the end of the day, the only thing that should matter is if it helped you make music or not.
EDIT:
I feel like I should go more in depth on my metal comment. For those of you that aren't aware, there's a debate about using drum samples in metal. I'm personally in favor of it if you're a bedroom musician/making a demo or other circumstances.
I would absolutely pick the MODX, assuming I also got to take some audio solution to make up for the lack of built-in speakers.
At these prices, I shouldn't have to choose between them. It would not be hard for Yamaha to combine the functionality of each into one synth / arranger combo.
The fact that a Genos II costs so much more than a Montage but lacks synthesizer features is particularly ridiculous.
I think the MODX has enough arranger features that I wouldn't miss the difference between that and a PSR-SX900. Plus, you can get the MODX8 or 8+ with 88 weighted keys... something I appreciate since I detest the feel of most non-weighted keyboards.
Some styles have the word “session” on top. Maybe those are the audio styles from previous models? They sure sound better in my opinion.
i don't remember what that means exactly, but it's not the audio styles for sure
Hi, I have a Yamaha psr 970 do think should like buy sx 900 to your opinions?
i think you should figure out how much you can sell your 970 for, and how much the 900 is, calculate the difference, and see if the new features and changes are worth that money!
I think appregiated analogue synth part sounded quite good. Ok, it may not be phat sounding but it sounded good to me. Would be perfectly usuable for me.
it did sound good, i'm just not finding many of these simple little synth sounds
@woody.. how you connected this keyboard to computer? And which software you are using. Can you reply or make a video about thia
i connected via an native instruments usb audio interface. i should make a vid about it, thanks for the suggest
@@WoodyPianoShack pls tag me so i can easily notice ur video
Hello in near future Can you do one of your videos for PSR SX900 RE: How to connect it to iPad ?
i don't think that is possible?
Have you heard any word about another generation for SX? I also have a S970 and am looking to upgrade. I would’ve upgraded last year but u know C19 dampered that idea. Please respond, thx
no idea, it might normally be time for a new model, but with all the supply shortages and other disruption...?
I have a Korg Px4 and I am sure it is a great board. However, I am overly confused on it. Of course not being a real active keyboard player the arrangers appear to be great. I may have to get the Yamaha, perhaps it is a bit easier to use and interface with?
What did you get?
0:32 does it do a automatic harmony on your voice? Or is it just a recording from earlier?
yes. it has the harmonizer
@@WoodyPianoShack Nice. Does it make the harmony based on the chord you're playing?
Why isn’t there a section for Ballads. Isn’t that a brand and butter category?
If I never hear that vocoder again it'll be too soon
Is it possible to play the old styles & sounds used in the PSR S series????
yes, believe you can load styles from many older arrangers, maybe not all though, but they are inferior to the SX styles so not sure why you would...
Hi Woody, Which audio recording Software do you use ?
reaper or ableton

Is the voice harmonizer only on the sx900 and not on the sx700?
correct
What’s the song you’re playing at 5:40? That’s a proper late ’90s/turn-of-the-millennium Euro sound vibe 👍
re-listening now, that's a pretty cool groove, just an improv though!
Whatever it was it took me back about 20 years 👍
My almost new Psr s975 or a new sx900 Woody. You can say it! I love cheese and yoghurt 😉 . Have a nice 2020, looking out for you!
thank you, wot woz the question?
What do I have to choose for now my dear Woody, a very important moment to me! A Psr s975 or a Psr sx900? Please tell me which one : the 975 ( new, in the box ) or the sx 900 ?! I have to decide before Monday and I’m going to choose what you recommend me! I respect your knowledge and ideas! Thank you Woody!
@@Ronny-Summer depends of course what features are important to you and your budget. me, i'd get the 975 save $$$ and use it to buy a piano! wgat's the price difference in your case?
The price difference is €300 for me. The sx900 is a very young demo-keyboard. I’m sorry to say but I can’t play piano and really want one of these two keyboards ( I am 62 and have some broken nerve-systemen my hands ( diabetic poly neuropathy 😖) ) so this one is going to be with me for a longer time now. You know, Woody, I’m a bit afraid of the small touchscreen, is that good enough to replace the one from the 975? I’ve seen it for a too short time. And what is the importance of the 3th voice? ‘That’ important? You had the 975 for some time and you know it. The sx900 was fast away .... I know your love for real synths but that’s not for this layman though I love them but can’t play them. Sorry for long story .. I keep watching your video’s , from the beginning I did that because I like your unique way of presenting, a great performer and always a pleasure to watch! 😀👍. Now, what shall I do? Thank you for your quick reply ! Have a nice evening!
Hallo , welches Program nutzen Sie für Recording?
i think the answer to your question is Reaper!
I think the e-piano sounds in MODX are better because they have an FM chip built in. Especially the DX - typical FM -Pianos this is of course an advantage.
absolutely, the FM e-pianos on the sx are just samples, the FM pianos on the MODX are so phatt!
Great video. My only big bug is that the keys are not touch sensitive. That aside, I love this keyboard. Why did Yamaha do this and how do people get around this? I currently have a PSR 770 and am looking to upgrade very soon. I welcome all suggestions and ideas. Do I get a different brand even though I love Yamaha. Thanks.
not touch sensitive? they certainly are! am i misunderstanding your comment?
@@WoodyPianoShack What I mean is the harder you press the keys the louder the sound. When you press softly, the sounds are quieter. Does this make sense to you now?

I tried one for the first time today. Put a Shure 58 in the mic jack and tried the vocal 'thing' ..Horrible. I have a 970 and a Korg PA 600 (as well as an old PSR 3000). I play about 20-24 gigs a month with the 2 board setup. The Vocal Harmonizer on the 970 is next to useless, and I use a Digitech box (I am a solo act). The 970 has buttons, the Korg has a touch screen. Gimme the buttons any day. watching your video is the most down to earth and realistic one yet. I was thinking of getting one, but I reckon I'll get a soon-to-be-discounted 975 with an expansion pack and get a TC Helicon external box with the money I save. Great video- you 'unsold' me on it..
interesting, do you mean that the harmonizer is better on the 970? how?
@@WoodyPianoShack No- It's so bad I won't use it. The Korg 1000 uses the Helicon Circuitry which is way better, but the Yamaha sounds tinny in comparison-I tried them side by side. I asked Yamaha last week about whether they had improved it and they said it was the same as in the 970/975. The Korg, even with a touch screen ,is not as good in live situations in my experience. Things are hard to find on that beastie..
Can we learn piano on this keybed action .
I'm in a dilemma to choose a Roland rd88 digital piano and Yamaha PSR SX 900 . Please help me
sure PSR will be fine for learning piano for many years! you might want to upgrade to 88 weighted keys eventually as you progress.
@@WoodyPianoShack really 😍😍😍 ho thank you sir . Can we complete all piano grands with the help of this PSR ? From India 🙏🏻 .
@@WoodyPianoShack one more question woody . Yamaha PSR SX 900 or korg pa1000 which one is best one ? Thank you .❤️
I have wondered about the arranger/workstations. Could they be the thing I need? If you can make your own styles, wouldn't that work for me? These videos have convinced me that my decision to go down the synth workstation route instead is definitely the right one.
I don't have that musician snobbery thing going on (I'm not a good enough musician to be snobbish about anything, nor do I really get the concept of one method of making music being "better" than another) and I can definitely see why they are so popular, but I don't think they're for me.
I may still get one in the future, but for now I think I'll pass.
I agree with your physical button and fader comment. The 970/975 was nice in having physical buttons right below the mixer levels (which can be visible onscreen at all times, for real-time control). It’s too cumbersome on the SX900 to 1) pull up mixer screen, 2) tap a channel and 3) adjust with your finger (with difficulty). Too fiddly, and impossible in the moment. Hey, could I use a small MIDI controller with actual faders (ex/ KORG nanoKontrol 2) to get real faders? Maybe Velcro it below the screen. (You probably have some Velcro left over from the S970 monitor attachment). How about a demo, showing how to use a MIDI controller for faders and knobs on the SX900 (you’ll need them on the desert island). Cheerio!
i've been wondering the same, how would a korg nanokontrol work?
Woody Piano Shack That’s what I was hoping you would figure out. I am assuming one would assign midi channels for the different part levels to the Korg controller.
Infact, went I for the s970.but when I saw the beautiful colour screen with the images of the instruments on the sx900, that made me buy it without hesitation. But what disappoints me is the washed out projection of the images on my play viewing angle😬.
If you see this comment Woody do you know if there's much difference in the audio quality between this and the SX700, I'm aware of all the extra features but quite sure I wouldn't need them. Really on form with your humour on this one too, love it 👌
i have not tried 700, but i would say no, the difference is in the features not the audio quality, also check out the 600, that might be the one i would buy, seems to be fantastic value.
@@WoodyPianoShack Thank you, I'll check that one out.
Your desert Island instrument opinion may swing back to the MODX when MODX os 2.0 becomes available on the 24th of October. The new os brings extensive sequencer capabilities to the MODX, as well as a VCF Mini Filter, Mini Booster, Wave Fodder. I still think (like I commented on one of your earlier videos) that combining this with the MODX is golden. Put it on a 2 tier keyboard stand and play( or sync) them together. :) For me the sound editing capabilities are the most important. For some reason I was less impressed with the piano sounds of the PSR SX900. I thought they had the same sample in it as the MODX but It is probably with less dynamic layers.
the modx wins for sure on my kind of sounds, the psr offers some basic editing of voices, filter & envelope, which is usually all I do even on a powerful synth :) will be interesting to combine the two boards as you suggest, cheers
Which Software R u using for recording??
not sure on this one, but reaper or ableton.
