Speaking of empty train stations, I remember back in 2009 when Guangzhou South Station first opened, a NY Times reporter ridiculed it "cavernous". But less than ten years later, it became so crowded that Guangzhou decided to build an even bigger one in the North of the city.

In the West we always play catchup. We wait until we have utter chaos in cities and then try to fix it. I think some countries like China are trying to develop before the chaos. And of course that means things will be built out before people and industries are brought in. Not having masses of people and industry there first and then try to adapt needed infrastructure around them.WE are just shocked by that because we aren't used to governments that plan for future needs or problems. And not just try to run around like a "chicken with it's head cut off" trying to fix the problems.

I don’t think we have all the info and data to understand why he made the decision to build Xiongan. It’s hard to predict the future. I think Chinese govt put infrastructure in place before people moving into the area, whilst some countries would wait till the population reaches a certain point to justify the spending on infrastructure.
I remembered that it was like just a few years ago when the president announced this "Xiong-An new district". What you are showing today is a lot more than I would expect on what used be bare land. For this project to be successful, I think it needs a catalyst, like some big tech company relocating their research campus here, or a few supply chain companies for the AirBus assembly in Tianjin setting up close to here. Many years ago, when the city of Guangzhou was expanding east, it created the district "ZhuJiang New City". The roads and buildings went up very fast, but with very few occupants. Some retail stores that was there very early suffered and eventually closed before the city attained the critical mass. Today, "ZhuJiang New City" is operating normally, and the city has expanded even more towards the east and southeast. But Xiong-An is not part of Beijing. To lure Beijing residents to move there, the train fare has to be low enough for it to make financial sense.
That was a very informative tour. Have no idea how many trains will be traveling there or if it is a major interchange or destination. Looking forward to see what it will look like when fully utilized.
I have a feeling that when you look back 5 years from now, this video will be incredible. How successful or busy Xiongan will be who can tell, but if the Beijing government is going to split up and move here, it's won't be a "ghost city" as Western schadenfreude prays it would be. It's not often you build and design a modern techno city from the ground up, anywhere in the world.

People were trying to buy land and residents were trying to hold on to their property to bet on price hike and win a fortune by land acquisition compensation. Later government put restrictions on speculation and it quieted down. There was also quite some disapproval on the web stating this "prestige project" of Xi's is doomed to fail due to lack of water. Over the years I have figured out Xi's not as dumb as some hoped. Still this seems to be a high stake project. Hope it goes well. A well planned city will be good for both the environment and people's wellbeing.
Smart city planning is so important. I remember moving to a newer part of the city in Texas and they built a new DMV. My first time there were 40 stations staff with workers and I might have been the 10th person in there all day. I thought it was great but also a waste of money but they told they expected the location would be one of the busier one in a few years. By the time I had to renew in five years the wait was 2 hours long, and it was staffed with 60 workers.

@@iyansetiadi1986 the UK was first to use mass cctv surveillance and today it has more cameras per head than any other nation, I read it has one camera per every 11-14 people. the police use camera surveillance in over 90% of their cases, it has helped reduce traffic pile ups and accidents. If one is a law abiding citizen then they have nothing to fear and the cameras will help in their safety.

I think this city is only for government stuff. It's like when the US did the Manhattan project, they had to build a city for the scientists, families, etc. It's sort of the same thing. It's a city for government employees.

the reason for height restriction is due to their negative impact on economy. there are generally a few physical limitation to building height. 6 storey is how tall you can go without elevators. 30 storey is how tall you can go with 1 set of elevators, 60 storey is how tall you can go with 2 set of elevators. any taller requires express elevators and soon you end up with a building where most of it floorspace is used by elevator shaft and requires alot of money to maintain. and these supertall building tend to require financing from bank, where their higher cost of operation create unnecessary liabilities to the health of the banking sector.
There are few people because houses there cannot be bought and sold freely. The threshold is very high, even if you are Chinese, there are many restrictions on where to buy real estate!

It says "someone bought a black person, thinking the person is black because the previous owner wasn't taking good care of him/her, so this buyer tried to use soap and water to clean the person, but to no avail, and got the black person sick instead. This story tells us what comes with birth stay the same. " The story tells in an old fable style. Slaveries and in particular black slaveries are pretty infamous and well known, I don't see why it can't be used as a premise of an old-time story, just like using a king or a knight. Also the story was indicating the buyer's ignorance of not realizing the black skin is something natural that came with birth, the moral of the story is also to respect and not change something that came with a person, so overall it's a decent story, nothing to cover your eyes for.
This Beijing extension district(xiongAn) supposed to relocate 4.2 million residents from Beijing center within “ 2 ring roads “, so not everyone qualified. Xiongan is design to be the connection to turn Beijing, Tianjin, Baoding into a single metropolitian area like Tokyo. I am personally oppose to keeping the capital in Beijing, but if you want to keep the capital in Beijing, than this project make sense. why I don't prefer Beijing as a capital is because it environment is not suitable, it is cold, far from the center of traffic, and lack access to one of the major river. Wuhan region is far more suitable for a modern capital of China, putting itself in equidistance to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing and Xian. encourgaing the development of China to go "westward" away from the coast. this will create a brand new engine of growth as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou will develop into metropolis in their own right without the need to be capital. really the only reason to keep the capital in Beijing is historic continuity, but I would argue just as the era of Changan is over, so is the era of Beijing. Beijing was made capital to control the frontier, a frontier that no longer exist. Mongol are never going to raid China again. instead of a capital design to push resources north, China now need a capital design to push resources west. but I can understand Xi jinping decision, moving a capital would be a major undertaking, so he choose a more conservative path. yes Xiongan is "conservative" in my view LOL!

LOL I don't think that story was anything bad or offensive. It says "someone bought a black person, thinking the person is black because the previous owner wasn't taking good care of him/her, so this buyer tried to use soap and water to clean the person, but to no avail, and got the black person sick instead. This story tells us what comes with birth stay the same. " The story tells in an old fable style. Slaveries and in particular black slaveries are pretty infamous and well known, I don't see why it can't be used as a premise of an old-time story, just like using a king or a knight. Also the story was indicating the buyer's ignorance of not realizing the black skin is something natural that came with birth, the moral of the story is also to respect and not change something that came with a person, so overall it's a decent story, nothing to cover your eyes for.

This Beijing extension district(xiongAn) supposed to relocate 4.2 million residents from Beijing center within “ 2 ring roads “, so not everyone qualified. So I don’t get the idea, it’s idiotic, useless, ghost city. It on government order the people mentioned have to move!!!! Another pillar is state owned companies also need to go there, I guess the third phase will be open for biz. It will not open for private investors for a long long while…

Xiongan is design to be the connection to turn Beijing, Tianjin, Baoding into a single metropolitian area like Tokyo. I am personally oppose to keeping the capital in Beijing, but if you want to keep the capital in Beijing, than this project make sense.
why I don't prefer Beijing as a capital is because it environment is not suitable, it is cold, far from the center of traffic, and lack access to one of the major river. Wuhan region is far more suitable for a modern capital of China, putting itself in equidistance to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing and Xian. encourgaing the development of China to go "westward" away from the coast. this will create a brand new engine of growth as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou will develop into metropolis in their own right without the need to be capital. really the only reason to keep the capital in Beijing is historic continuity, but I would argue just as the era of Changan is over, so is the era of Beijing. Beijing was made capital to control the frontier, a frontier that no longer exist. Mongol are never going to raid China again. instead of a capital design to push resources north, China now need a capital design to push resources west.
but I can understand Xi jinping decision, moving a capital would be a major undertaking, so he choose a more conservative path. yes Xiongan is "conservative" in my view LOL!
