I've been buying Thinkpads since 1998. My current work laptop is a T480. Such a good design, I hope they don't mess it up.
Even if they do make a mistake they are good about addressing it.
This is my work machine as well, with about an extra $1000 put into it for upgrades. SSD, Maxed out RAM, etc.. and soon to be eGPU, it is going to be very future-proof. Moreso than many others on the market. I use it daily as a dev and at this point, as long as I can still upgrade RAM and SSD, I'll keep buying Thinkpads for the foreseeable future. That's the sticking point though. If they start to solder everything on like every other manufacturer, then we are going to have an issue.

My IBM LOGO’d T60P finally died after almost 17 years of great service. The T580 is a superb replacement. It’s not as sturdy of course - no titanium frame, etc. But it’s size, light weight & performance more than make up for it.
That's a long service life.

Really enjoy watching this channel! Great content! I just bought a refurbished discounted grade A T580 with the right specs (FHD screen+backlit keyboard, 8th gen CPU) for *480 CAD* taxes included. Bargain IMO. I also have the smaller T480 and an X230 [I'm aware I overboard getting that extra T580 but I really wanted a Numpad :-)]. I run linux on all of them. I just hope that I'll get many years out of these machines/CPUs, especially since apple's M chips seem so powerful and technology seems to be developing exponentially... If we can get something out of the twelve year old T410 today, I'll keep my fingers crossed for my TX80 to last me till 2030 (esp. since they can run windows 11).
Glad you're enjoying the content Ben. These 8th gen machines are pretty popular right now because they are inexpensive Windows 11 laptops. ThinkPads are built to last in my experience.
This is kind of the best of both worlds for me, all the advtantages of the t480 with a larger screen

For a whole ass second, I thought my headphones were broken when I listened to the mono-channel audio intro of the video.
Hmmm. First time that's happened/been brought up. I'll have to take a look at the project file later and see what the cause of that might be.
This reminded me of the T570 I used for a year for work, but stashed away. This made me want to pull it out again and try it out. I have been using a T470p for work instead for years. The T470p has that legendary TP quality.
My T570 had the motherboard replaced twice because of NVMe drive failures. The second time (under warranty at the time), the technician replaced the bottom case. I found it later it was because a metal piece on the bottom was intended to secure the hard drive controller connection which could have put pressure on it enough to loosen the connector from the board. The new one replaced it with a piece of foam instead. There is someone on UA-cam here also experiencing the same situation with their P1 (EDIT: or P50, I forget)
I am not exactly happy with the T570's case. It was my first impression of TPs and was initially upset. But I can compare with older TPs. It flexes more that my T430s, particularly the screen body (which did contributed to some pressure spots I think). But otherwise it is nice (at least if the NVMe drive controller doesn't go bust again :D )
I presume the T580 corrected the design mistakes.

I doubt it’s been corrected as I’m experiencing the same NVMe failure on my T580. I can only run it in Legacy mode.
@@georgebmac8140 It's a problem with most of these models I imagine. It's not the NVME drive itself, just that the connector on the motherboard is poorly soldered, so eventually it's gonna become loose, causing blue screens or errors for the drive. It's gonna have to be properly soldered back on.
The keyboard of those can actually be removed by just unfastening the 2 screws at the bottom keeping it fastened to the machine. It's literally a 2min job swapping keyboards on these.

Good for cyber security or penetration testing and running VMs?
Can't help but think these newer models are cheaped out in some ways vs old classics despite the newer tech but at least there are two batteries and the ram isn't soldered unlike brands some brands like Razer or Apple ect sticking it to their customers. Also a classic five or six button track pad would have been pretty nice over the click pad but at least there is the three buttons above. The cooling doesn't impress at all any way the prices for high capacity SSDs are a bit brutal especially for the 4 and 8tb models so for data hogs as well content creation the pain can be real.
They'd probably go for the P52 I suspect in this generation.
For the LTE card do you need antenna cables? I don't see any antenna cables lying around there, except the WiFi ones that are already in use. For that I need to disassemble the display and install LTE antenna cables myself?
Page 55 of the hardware maintenance manual states it will likely not be installed unless it came from the factory with an LTE option. It could be installed after but you're right it will involve some disassembly.

It is not that difficult though. I've installed LTE Antenna on my non-LTE T480 before. You have to remove the entire LCD assembly and then remove the bezel and LCD to stick the LTE Antenna into place, then route the antenna cable in the channel on the both side of the screen. Then route it into the main body. It requires you some exprience with repairing laptop, so not something I would recommend doing for people disassemblying their laptops for the first time, but it is definitely possible without much tools.

If given the choice between a t480 and t580 with similar specs which would you choose? I'm looking to get something for school without breaking the bank.
I prefer smaller devices so it would be the T480 for me.
I have this very machine and i love it. I was thinking of dual boot linux as it is stuck in windows 10, yet yours is running windows 11! How?
8th generation Intel supports Windows 11. Unless you have 7th gen CPUs in there. Tiny11 is an alternative.

I have the T570 and it has 2 cores 4 threads , do you think the T580 is faster? Also I have checked that the motherboard of T570 looks alike the motherboard of T580, do you think I can fit that of T580 into the chassis of T570?
Most of the T580 are 8th Gen quad core, so yes they are. As for a motherboard swap, it might be doable but depending on your situation the tweaks to make it work may not be worth it.
I was just able to get one of these for $350 CAD, found a couple others at this price.

I'd love to see you do a video on the T480s, the last great s-series of the T-series in my opinion, because it reaches the best compromise of lightweight and thinness without sacrificing upgradeability and servicability.

many people bash the T480s ... but I bought one just to have it in collection (and sometimes use for certain things alongside my M1 MBA) ... it's a great machine. The iGPU model has dual heatpipe out of box (regular T480 does not). Main SSD bay has 4 lanes so SSDs run at full speed.
When the great battery isn't something you really rely on and you're okay with max. 16GB in dual-channel... then the T480s is plenty sufficient.
Just scooped one for $380 CAD.

T480 is a solid machine properly configured and if 8th Intel, can do Windows 11.

I can't speak about local pricing as that varies things but it sounds like a nicely set up device.
What is the difference between t580 and e580?
A significant amount, mainly around build quality and components. You can look up the PSREF sheets for both to compare.

The T series is usually preferred. It will depend on which specific models you are comparing and the cost/condition.
I'd probably still stick with the 4xx line simply because 15.6" seems too big of a laptop to me.
Still, I can see the appeal.
Then again, just like with the x70 before is the lack of a Dock port something I really dislike.
The one distinct advantage of the larger size beyond the numpad is the poorer display options on the 4xx aren't present. At least from what I read.
Daily uses a 17'' and is just fine, the largest daily I've used was an M18x R2 and didn't have much of an issue aside from the track pad well the lack of buttons coming from a Thinkpad while the keyboard was so so. The 4xx line is good for on the road use as well the usual work/school that doesn't require much performance wise.
The T470 has a bottom mechanical docking port connector. The x70 series were the last with them. But moving on to the x80 series, you have the USB-C docks, which are much more convenient than the old ultra docks.
They've also more widely compatible.
