When Bird was a freshman at Indiana Kent Benson bullied him to the point that he left school -- went to Indiana State instead. So that last story wasn't just standard Bird mind games, that was personal -- he wanted revenge, and he bloody well got it.

Happened twice. College invitational tournament in '78 or thereabouts, and the Dream Team in '92. Absolutely dominant both times.

It's really hard to match up a rivalry with today's game. Bird was all about winning and not his own stats. He loved playing the game of basketball. He said one time "i would've played for free".
He would be bored standing in one place shooting 3's. You said one time that players from the '80s era loved playing the game. Then you kinda took it back, because you didn't want to dis today's players, but you were right the first time.
I'm sure you noticed the way the ball touches several players hands looking for the high percentage shot. I don't see that in today's game.
If Larry played today who would his rival be?
I'd guess it would be whoever was able to make it to the finals repeatedly to play against him there

This. Before winding up on the floor in a highlight reel these guys have already been burned by a dozen fakes, some of which they were told in advance were coming. Add all the plays where there is no time to explain to them what is happening like the ball whipped through their legs for an assist or having a close encounter with Robert Parish's sternum.
Their ankles aren't breaking. Their brains are just saying 'nope' and powering down for a breather.
You have to remember the rivalry predated their time in the NBA, I honestly don't think that would happen today. I honestly don't think the league wold allow, just on the off chance it wold get taken too far.

Bird had several rival's but no players will every have the rival Bird and Magic had. They also had mad love and respect for each other. Nothing will ever compare. I grew up a huge Bird fan but i still love magic

How do I feel about bird in today's league? Well joker might win 3 consecutive mvp's the first since bird and Luka is one of the highest scorers in the league and both athletically similar to bird I would say bird would most likely average more in every statistical category than both of them and probably 5 more points a game than Luka
Luca is Sampson. Very special player that puts you in mind of Bird. Not as good a shot as Bird but very comparable

Bird is the GOAT. The best all around player to ever step on the hardwood. And yes, better than Jordan. Michael was a prolific scorer and the better athlete, but Bird was the best all around player EVER.

Luka is a great player with a lot of charisma , but time will tell as to were he might rank compared to the legend. Win a couple of MVP trophies for the season and finals , then we will talk . Right now his resume is lacking. Period!!!!!
