Asbestos - A Matter of Time (1959)

  • This 1959 film by the Bureau of Mines (US Department of the Interior.) describes how asbestos is mined and processed and the significant role it plays in our lives. Using diagrams and on location shooting, both open pit and block carving methods of mining asbestos are described, followed by a detailed examination of how the fiber is milled and undergoes its change from crude ore to refined fiber. The remainder of the film deals with the numerous ways this versatile mineral enhances our daily lives, from roofing materials to automobile brake linings. Note several mentions of dust control, but no specific mention of the occupational asbestosis, lung cancer or mesothelioma, diseases caused by inhaling asbestos dust. Asbestos manufacturers knew of these diseases by the 1930s.

Grimly fascinating. This film was made at least 40 years after the dangers of asbestos had become known. But not a word about that here. The power of vested interests.

Lost my Dad from cancer as he worked with asbestos materials as a carpenter in the construction industry for decades while no one said anything of the dangers.. He made it to 90 and was sharp and still getting around a month before he died. He would probably still be here if it wasn't for the asbestos.

Asbestos used in the brewing industry - Mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure was a high risk for brewery workers. Many workers exposed to asbestos in a brewery workplace experienced a ten to fifty year latency period before developing the deadly disease. It’s possible that anyone working in a brewery before the 1980's is a mesothelioma victim waiting to happen.
Brewery workers inhaled asbestos fibres released from beer filters and insulation lagging. Others who were not directly handling ACMs had secondary asbestos exposure from breathing asbestos-contaminated air that flowed throughout the brewery. That included everyone like the maintenance staff who handled products during shut downs and even management staff walking the floor.

I am an old man. As young one I worked in a factory producing a variety of asbestos products from mouldable wet asbestos /cement sheets.
Being the sort that reads, I quickly informed myself about the stuff. Hardly anyone was even interested. ( The carmarderie in that place was unsurpassed. Men of all nationalities)
So over the decades these superb men gradually passed away. Most made their 70's and 80's. Half a dozen into their 90's including one family member who died of natural causes. Only a small number died of asbestosis and curiously they were not in the thick of it.
Definitely for some, (but just who) are at risk. But the hype and hysteria is over the top.
The rubbish now being passed off as food alone, is unquestionably a bigger threat to longevity for the masses than asbestos.
