You know, the longer I use SAMSARA EDP, the more I'm convinced that SAMSARA is really the best perfume in the world.. Today, I was shopping at the department store, and as usual, I would go around and smell topseller perfumes.. So today, I smelled Dior Dolce Vita EDT and Chanel No. 5 EDP and Chanel Chance.. And still SAMSARA emerged as the Masterpiece amongst them..

I have been wearing this virtually since it was created in 1989. My daughter was nearly two years old at the time, and now she is 32. I stopped wearing this about 18 years ago, but it was my signature fragrance and I would pair it with the matching lotion, which is also a very good, moisturizing and creamy lotion...no matter where I went, even into a nail salon, someone would walk in and say "OH MY GOSH WHAT SMELLS SO GOOD?" and I would just raise my hand out of habit. Well now that I have two grandkids, my daughter will walk into a room, and if she smells this she will literally stop in her tracks and just close her eyes and say "Stop!! Oh, it smells like my Mom in here..." in a very nostalgic way...Now Guerlain has come out with Mon by Guerlain, which is a lighter, more sophisticated and less powerful but similar fragrance. I'm torn between both, but as many perfumes as exist, I've NEVER come close to the compliments I received when I wore Samsara. (Note: sometimes it's enough JUST to wear the lotion...and less overpowering.) The word that describes this Samsara scent is HYPNOTIC.

Omg !!! My friend’s cat jumped on my lap the other day and sat there for ages ! She normally never sits on me before. I just realised that I was wearing SAMSARA EDP in the 2024 version ! This is such a crazy coincidence , maybe cats really love Samsara

Tom, your reviews are so good! Guarlain should really hire you lol, as you made this perfume Queen of perfumes (at least in my eyes). After watching your video, I had to try it and ended up buying it. As you have said, it is art. Its strong and warm, yet relaxing - like xanax in a bottle. I hope you continue to make perfume reviews, you are so good at it.

What a great review! I found Samsara again. Thank you for that! I used to wear it all the time in the early 90's. The woman of the Guerlain counter told me then that she had discussed with Monsieur Guerlain about the new scent. He created the perfume for his Belgian mistress who was his adored muse. For me Samsara is one of the ultimate oriental fragrances. The lovely scent truly last on you for hours. I love to wake up smelling Samsara.

Thanks for this look at what makes the difference btwn the EDP and EDT. I have 2 bottles of vintage EDT, the caps don't come off like yours in the video, you actually spray it through the red caps - just press down on them! Anyway I've always found it to be a powder, sandalwood and jasmine bomb, I never got any of the fruit notes. Fantastic in winter, a classic in every regard.

Yes, the two bottles of Samsara I had used don't open totaly. We have to turn the caps to back (180 degrees) and press down to spray. For me it has the before and the after of Samsara. I discovered the kind of parfum I like.

Awesome review! Thanks for sharing. This scent also brings back many memories for me too...my Mom got a bottle of the Parfum back in 1989 when it was new, from my Grandma who was the "Perfume Lady" at Famous Barr. I remember being in love with it even then--and it was and remains such a beautiful scent. I just picked up some EDP and it was INSTANT flashback to a time of big hair, sweater dresses and lots of makeup! Good stuff.

Thanks for the review. It's one of my favourite perfumes ever, Guerlain did know the job, a truly masterpiece! I'm a sandalwood fan and Samsara it's perfection. It's the only perfume I truly feel comfortable wearing, it feels just like me, there's a feel good vibe in this scent, calming and spiritual. But I love the fact it turns into a dirty, indolent and even sweaty scent that makes me feel so sexy... This gem has the capability of boosting my confidence through its soft, calm notes, but also makes me feel incredibly sensual. Can't wait to get my hands on a vintage flacon.

I adore the EdP of Samsara! It's one of my favorites, whereas the last time I tried the EdT, I didn't care for it much, there was a green sharpness that I picked up on that turned me away. I would like to try it again now that I've become well acquainted with the EdP. Love your Guerlain reviews! ♥

Finally I got my own Samsara (the EDT) and in the new packaging. I would love to have the original red bottle but, here in Canada at least, it is now very hard to find it is the new packaging almost everywhere. I really love this perfume. Don't know if I love it as much as you do but it is really a LOVE for me. Thanks for the comparison review between the two concentrations. Maybe I will be able to find a EDP in red bottle somewhere on Ebay or something like that.

I really love the house of Guerlain , Samsara has to be in my top10 favourites. I prefer it over Shalimar. I would characterize it as a soapy scent, you get this gentle Lye like burning sensation when you take a good sniff. You may get pissed off with me for saying this but the closest similar fragrance would be Beautiful by Estee Lauder, similar in that soapy way I described earlier. You are so right about the trailing effect. Please do more reviews on Guerlain's fragrances. Thanks

I watched your review before buying Samsara :) I decided on EDP, it's lovely - mysterious, charming, to me it's also a very private scent, romantic, not the one that shouts and conquers the world. I'm only disappointed with lonvegity but that's maybe I got the bottle made in 2012, I would die to try vintage.

Ok so I was patient and finally I scored a half of a bottle of a vintage 1992 Samsara. It just arrived today and WOW WOW it’s soo good. I will treat it like gold and use it sparingly. I have a bottle of the newest Samsara and it’s nice but nowhere as amazing as the 1992 bottle. I just wish I had a larger vintage bottle . Usually to find vintage u have to go to auctions and keep an eye on eBay. You sometimes will find someone who’s mother died and he’s selling all of her perfumes. I have scored a few amazing very vintage fragrances that way. Last year I scored a 1975 bottle of Chanel 5. And wow was it still strong and well loved . Same with my bottle of vintage Poison, it’s just amazing good. If you can get your hands on any vintage perfume, don’t hesitate. Even if it’s one you never heard of . While I was moving, I found a small 5ml vintage purse bottle of Salvatore Dali and I was so happy to find it. I don’t remember where I got it or if anyone gave it to me . I used to have a friend that would go to garage sales with me, before I moved out of NYC, and I think that may be where I found that lil bottle of Dali perfume . I didn’t really collect or care about perfume back in my 20’s. I just bought and wore whatever was in and popular at the time. And of course my boyfriends bought me perfume gifts all the time. I wasn’t into Guerlain or Chanel. Back then I thought those were perfumes for rich old ladies..lol what an idiot we can be when we are young and naive. I remember when Angel came out, I was all over it. I had a few bottles and when Alien came out I thought the name was stupid and didn’t even give it a chance. Too bad because I now love Alien much more than Angel and Oh my goodness I adore the Alien flankers. I managed to find some vintage bottles of Angel and Alien. I found out that many ppl sold theirs coz it was too strong.
Well goodness me, that’s the whole reason why we love vintage, it’s stronger, projects and lasts a lot longer. I can’t even wear todays Angel, it’s so weak and Alien is so watered down that it’s not worth buying unless u want to douse yourself with the perfume . So I’ll keep searching out the vintage bottles. It’s getting harder and harder to find vintage anything now days. Which is why I am soooo happy to have found this beautiful half full bottle of Samsara. I can’t stop smelling my arm. I will treasure every drop and keep searching for a full bottle. I usually don’t like buying used perfume, unless it’s vintage and in a spray bottle that can’t be opened and tampered with. My biggest problem with Serge Lutens is that all of his bottles are refill bottles and can be opened and tampered with and ppl know how to weaken a perfume. I would never do it nor will I tell ppl here how they do it. Because I don’t want to give crooks ideas but yeah ppl can be such scammers . I don’t mind paying a seller a good amount of money for a vintage perfume but i expect it to be authentic because I will know. I’ve gotten to the point in my perfume collecting journey where i can detect a fake from an authentic vintage perfume. And it pisses me off when a seller tries to get over on me because of how I look. Anyway I am off to swoon as I smell my arm…..mmmmm Samsara goodness ….

So, you talked me into giving this one more try. I went to Ulta yesterday and sprayed it on one wrist. I immediately liked it, but that has happened in the past. Well, previously I'd have to scrub it off with in 30 minutes. Not this time! I stayed with it the whole way through and was actually sad when I woke up and it was gone.
I suspect that what I tried yesterday was the EDT, where as in the past was the EDP. I will leave for the store shortly and find out as I forgot to check for EDT or EDP yesterday. I'll let you know if I'm right and it's EDT.
Anyway, THANK YOU for your reviews! They are the most helpful and informative I've found on YT :)

Amazing review, I'm really glad to see someone really made a decent review for Samsara, and I loved the fact that you talked about both EDT and EDP. I just know de EDT, I tried it on stores a couple of times and OMG, I love it... I got some "almond oil" quality to it, which I also love, and I want to get mine as soon as possible, but now I watched your review I'm even more sure, I'm blind buying the EDP one, I too prefer the more intense fragrances. I was watching this video and had to stop because something called my attention. You mentioned the fragrance and the notes "unfold" and I don't know if you know that Saṃsāra (Saṃsāri in sanskrit) means "continuous flow". So I'd say, by listening to you, that Guerlain totally captured it.

Thanks for this review. I never thought I liked Samsara, but I came across a small sample of the vintage EDP, and I love it. It helps me like the modern EDT more. I still prefer the vintage though, as with a lot of Guerlain perfumes (Jicky!). I wish there were a way for Guerlain to get all the ingredients they need, legally and ethically, to restore the perfumes to their vintage glory. By the way, I can't pronounce "Guerlain" either without feeling self-conscious ;-)

I know this review of yours is some years old now but I come back to it and watch it every now and again because I think I have a problem with samsara LOL... And I feel like watching this is a kindred spirit just in awe of this masterpiece this work of art... I finished my second 12-hour shift in as many days and I am now sitting here in my cozy bed with my air conditioner cranked up and samsara eau de parfum vintage 1990 wafting over me and relaxing me to the point I think I'm going into a coma... I feel like I'm in AA " hi my name is Tim and I'm not ashamed to say I use samsara like a drunken sailor"... Im eyeballing and auction for vintage foam bath and talcum powder and I can only imagine what heaven that would be after a long week ... to just lock the bathroom door and soak in a hot Samsara bath.. oh I would sleep like a baby

I read somewhere that J-P Guerlain actually set about composing Samsara over a 5+ year period soley in order to seduce a certain English woman whom he fancied. I have no way of knowing it this is true or not, but I agree, it is a work of art. Guerlain perfumes usually are works of art in my opinion.
If you love the sandalwood in Samsara, I strongly encourage you to try another exceptionally beautiful jasmine and sandalwood fragrance---Creed Jasmin Imperatrice Eugenie. It is a very beautiful sandalwood fragrance that smells like the old Mysore sandalwood--rich, smooth and creamy as well as elegant and expensive.

Oh I love the creed you mentioned! I tried it a few years ago and fell in love. It's very cool! I don't see it in many places though. I also found one called "santalove" by Nishane, which is like samsara but somehow way richer like the older formula. I so need to get it!

Oh, and I forgot to say! The first time I tried Samsara, the EDT as I said, I also tried Jean Paul Gaultier's Classique EDT, and I loved them so much that I brought home the little papers with both of the perfumes and I smelled them for a week. Then I bought Classique EDT and EDP, and they also smell different, but the EDT is more intense, to me. Now I'm wearing the EDP and I think I will spray on a little bit more just to stay here in front of my pc smelling it too, LOL.

They do not compare! It's kinda like buying a cheaper version of wine haha. :) The vintage just far surpasses the new formulation when it comes to longevity etc. The new one is still gorgeous but, vintage is always better. So, have you never tried it? I purchased this after watching this review a few times.I am underwhelmed. To me its very light that someone standing next to me cannot even smell it and neither can I smell it on myself. On me it lasts like 10 minutes and its gone .It feels like a watered down version of some perfume. Will wear it but will not repurchase it. Total disappointment for me.I don't experience the whole intense and filling a room bit.Maybe its just the newer version.

Elizabeth Mbugua, I completely agree with you. I am a guy and I have always been in love with Guerlain’s Samsara ! I loved the scent since it came out in 1989 and I bought my first bottle. Awesome warm scent for autumn and winter days. Back then I had the eau de toilette. Now, as we all know, in 2009 most of the classics got reformulated, but to my surprise Samsara didn’t change that much. Just the soapy, creamy aspect was gone but the scent itself was practically the same and I kept on wearing it, I just changed to eau de parfum because the edt had become a bit too light for me after it had been reformulated. Sadly this iconic scent was killed in 2017 when it was not only put in another bottle, but got reformulated again and what now remains is a watery version of what once was the iconic Samsara. I don’t buy it anymore, it’s overwhelming with alcohol in the beginning and when the alcohol is gone, whatever remains is far from what Samsara used to be and lasts 10 minutes....

Question: Have you ever experienced testing a fragrance, and after about 5 min, only being able to smell a trace of it? That's exactly what happens to me with Samsara. I swear that I'm "smell blind" to certain notes in this one. It's actually a pretty strong fragrance, right? So strange!

    • @ouch110
      @ouch110  7 років тому

Yes, that's easily possible. You may be anosmic to certain notes in it. I have trouble with Rose sometimes where people will say it's SUPER rosey and I don't think it is. It's just weird. :)

My first Samsara EDP was true vintage it was given to me as a Xmas present by an ex boyfriend who I dated when I was 14 back in 89 .
I have worn it ever since, my friends back in the. late nineties
kept calling me obsessed as I was for ever finding an excuse to keep having a sniff of the bottle even when I was wearing it.
    It is really addictive perfume
I believe it is an exceptionally beautiful perfume which is also extremely sensual in addition I have always believed it is the most enigmatic perfume to be created.
It does evoke distant lands and for me wonderful memories

I have purchased Geurlain's EDP of La Petite Robe Noire and the Guerlain's Insolence EDP
I know that although both fragrances are beautiful, they will never be as enigmatic as my beloved Samsara

Samsara first came out in 1989, not 1999. If yours is from '99 it's a reformulation. I don't think it takes me to far off India the way that Coty's Emeraude and it's dupe Shalimar but it's lovely, spicy, rosy, woodsy, and licorice yes licorice! I love it! lol To me it's balsamic and it seems to tell the story of Siddharta Gautama and how he went from decadent prince of India to the enlightened spiritual being the Buddha. Thanks for the review!

+Rachel Paray Hello Rachel! Yes I said "1989" in my review. :) Maybe you misheard? hehe. It's a wonderful perfume and I have since acquired an earlier version from the 90's as well as the pure parfum version (now considered vintage to many people) wow the difference is astounding. I think it was when Guerlain was still using mysore sandalwood as opposed to the synthetic stuff they use now. My perfume tutor told me there is a huge shortage of real mysore sandalwood which is such a shame. It may have been over harvested. :( Let's hope it comes back soon so we can experience the true beauty of vintage Samsara right? . :)

      @ouch110  10 років тому +3

Hold on a cotton picking minute!!!! Are you telling me you've never smelled Samsara?? If you haven't...you haven't lived! haha. The jasmine in this is in no way indolic. This is a super woody refined perfume, major tones of violet and beauty. I would recommend bidding on a bottle on ebay of the vintage version. They somehow go for reasonable prices (which astounds me). The vintage is in a clear bottle not red. And both the edt and edp are glorious!!! Just make sure the liquid is relatively pale and not dark brown (coz it's likely to be spoiled a bit...maybe). Vintage Samsara comes up on ebay all the time. It's one of the longest lasting and furthest projecting fragrances ever and on a guy??? MAGIC!! Let me know how you get on. :)
