You are so helpful, your pareto principle mixing tip in your techno course about starting with the biggest issues of what's lacking and then honing in on the minutia was SO cool!
I just want to comment again and say this is my favorite video on mixing! Seriously if you apply these it will help your mixes so much. I even made my own little chart from your chart that I apply to every mix I make now and I’m so happy how they come out. I’m finally at a similar pro level now. Thanks again for this info, you have my biggest support 💞
I watched this video two days ago I doubted it would work as i don't a genre thats on the chart but it is similar to deeo house. Yesterday i tried this on one song and it made it song so professional that i couldn't believe that it was a dong i produced. I was smiling for hours realizing how powerful this is anyway i mixed 2 more songs after that. May all your dreams and desires come true you truly helped me just as i was starting to seriously consider giving up.. Thank you
The way you used Youlean is really clever! I had never thought to use loudness to mix and find levels, only to master! It's also really nice that you took the time to make notes for differences in various genres, as well as including that these are never hard and fast rules but rather suggestions that can be adjusted depending on the song - well done Alice! Thanks for the tips!
This might lowkey be the best mixing tutorial on the internet🤣 Clear, concise and easy to follow💯 I printed/followed ur flowchart and the quality of my mixes immediately improved 1000x!! U are a genius sweet Sis, and u got a new subscriber🙌🏾 Thank u

There are so many takeaways in this video, I had to pause so many times. Making room for bands, setting levels, and it's cool to just watch how you personally approach the mixes--I wouldn't have caught the hi-hats taking over the mix at the end, but when you made the adjustment, it added so much drive to the feeling

I never subscribe to anything on UA-cam. But I did it just now because of the chart :) You are a great communicator, and know what your audience needs to hear
Love the flowchart! It kindof replaces the "mixing magic" with a tangible approach. I have some sort of similar workflow, but it is in my head only (no flow chart :)) and it starts with a kickdrum at -12 dB. And after that I mix all the other parts in, relative to that kick. As I usually mix psy-trance and uplifting trance, the relationship between the kick and the sub/mid bass is very important. I use different levels as a rule of thumb than you show here, but as you say, many things are depending on genre and style. You have a new follower in me. Thanks for the awesome vid.
Just wanted to say I love your content! There’s no wasted time, just loads of info. I have hearing difficulties and wear hearing aids. I’m not wearing them right now and could still hear the difference between the 2 mixes at the start 😂 I’m not sure how others couldn’t hear the difference!
Inrteresting but you don't talk about panning and I would be curious to know how you are going to pan for instance the hi-hats and 16th hats, and if you pan also the pad or let everything in center? thanks
Panning really depends quite a bit of the genre and the chart is more about getting the volumes right. I have another drum mix video where I talk about the panning a bit more.
The way I think of panning when I start is if I were in the crowd watching a band. Starting with drums Kick in the middle like a drummers drum kit is, right handed drummers Hi-Hat and snare wll be on your right (the drummers left) Hi-Hat typically more right than the snare, Hi-hat about 20% right, I usually use 2 closed hit hat sounds so one I make 18% and one 20% right, open hi hat same way. Snare about 12% panned right. Floor Tom panned about 30-35% left, and you should get the rest for your toms and cymbals. (look at a picture of a drum kit if you have to). Bass and Guitar are fed to the mixer board in live band so they can typically be centered, or maybe put your guitar 10% left or so. Thats a very basic start, everything of course and be tweaked depending on the track. so yeah, just imagine a band playing all the instrument, where are they at on the stage from a listeners point of view facing the stage.
@@snubdawg1386 I think all these tips (and in the video too) are to make room for someone to master the track, and they bring the volume up. In the end, the sound should be brought to just under 0 db.
This is a precious video, thanks. there is no certain db points of course but it takes you to really good point and you can adjust some db's by ear. Nobody willing to teach some real mixing tips but you!
Thanks so much for this guide. Was searching for so long for something like that. Awesome. This will improve my production so much like no other tutorial the last months
I feel like using peak level references may be misleading, as you could have the exact same "felt" volume or RMS with a clipped sound - so lower peaks (snares, hats, kick). Interesting take on things though.
I prefer to use VU meters (and occasionally look at LUFS too) rather than peak dBFS, but I think you can use either and just get used to different relative numbers. The key thing is to have a particular setting/number for your kick, and then practice (or use a flowchart) for balancing all your levels (in dBFS, RMS VU, or LUFS) relative to that.
Cool to hear that. Many engineers I know also use very similar methods to get the mix to a good balance and then make all the extras afterwards. This was more or less my try to consolidation of all the things I have learnt and I use. ✌️
I appreciate that you do more than just say "just raise or lower this until it sounds right." As a novice, I need to know what sounds right! Just because I can tell the difference between a pro and amateur track doesn't mean I know how many db should generally be between kicks and hats, for example.
hello Alice, I have been following you for more than 3 years, your tutorials always relevants, well explained and with a great video production ! Too bad you're not in FL... but your explanations are clear enough to be easily transposable! I love your songs... maybe a concert in France soon?!
literally unblocked me from finishing one of my tracks, thank you Alice! a video with how to measure things against reference tracks would be super helpful too!
Very helpful Video. I'm following your channel long time and it's nice to see how it's getting better from Video to Video. Thanks for sharing. Pls keep on doing like this
It's reassuring to know that the way i'm thinking about my mix and sound selection is similar to the techniques shown here. Which gives me more confidence to push the creativity forward :-) Helpful video as usual.
This is a great video! Really good guide on how to get a more balanced mix. Personally, I find that doing the fader adjustment phases here is EVEN STRONGER when doing it in MONO. Get that balance in mono, and I promise the switch back to stereo is magical!
Great, consistent and well organized tutorial, thanks! For measuring just the peaks, the mvMeter works better for me, because it does not take so much UI space.
I think this has been the most helpful mixing tutorial I've ever seen. I don't have the best monitoring system, but I'm gonna go back to some projects and see if I can't improve the mix using this.
Alice just want to thank you for sharing all of this knowledge and all these skills. Already a huge fan of your UA-cam work and packs, can't wait to start with the melodic techno course I just bought. You deserve all the support and hope you'll have a blast in Berlin!
Some of the drum samples I use are sitting at -20db or more. Should I turn them down in simpler then add more volume on the channel mixer volume to bring them back up to -6?
Hi, Alice! It was a while I was looking for some mixing tips like this. Even though I'm using FL Studio the general principles are the same. So your video was super helpful. Just one question: how to put your acid sounds in the mix correctly. They often have a bright range and are moving so fast and so deep. You open and close cutoff, bring up and down the resonance, so it is not as stable as drums, pads, percs whatever.
I tried this and its better, this is a great objective framework, but my mix still has no midrange. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Maybe the track doesn't have enough midrange elements? Not sure what to do next. Great videos, trying to watch therm all as I have time!
Hi Alice. Have you ever done any multi channel music? I am not talking about Atmos (which is shoved in everybody's face recently) more like a 5.1. How different is it from 2.0? If you did then what are the pros/cons? If you tried but decided not to bother with it, then what were the reasons? Thanks :)
Where do you find that snares and mid-frequency transient heavy content should work into this flow? I would guess between lows and highs. Any pro-tips for gluing snare with the kick and bass groove in that case?

This one is super simple to follow but probably one of the most effective tuts on mixing. Fact. Please do one on the reference route also nice one! peaCe
sometimes when I do side chain elements in the mix go silent. Also are we taking into account gain staging or is that what we're doing with the faders?
@Alice-Efe I bought your mixing and your mastering courses and I enjoyed them very much. I learned a LOT and I think you are a great teacher Alice. I learn something new every day or I have some huge relevation and I want to incorporate that into my current projects to make them better sounding. But this results keeping them in a development hell. When I go through the past versions there are some obvious bad ones but I can still find good things in the earlier versions. How do you know when is the right time you should stop tweaking the mix or the master?
You reference, with a track in your genere, metric AB from Plugin Works is really helpful, because you can compare Stereo field, and have several tracks to compare to. Use the same bpm and key on the reference track, makes it easier.
I think Marcus has a great point. Reference tracks are good way to compare if it is enough. And also remember the pareto principle. When you feel like the changes you make are really small and doesnt add much, it is a sign that you should consider stopping.
A nicely done video and a clear tutorial and explanation of the process. I appreciate the educative skills, including eloquence. And the joyful attitude towards music. :) There's more I could list that I appreciate, however I'll make this comment short. Just know I like your videos. I wish you a lot of lovely moments with music. :) PS. I've been composing hardcore in the late 90's, early 2000's, no DAW, just an advanced tracker. Nowadays I play my synth and I like to just immerse in the music.
