On the topic of "just finish music and focus on quantity" I hear what you're saying, but there's a really good argument against it. You just become practiced in the art of finishing a track. You do not become practiced in making articulate, compelling music...
Type of person that, even though I have a career in music, loves spending time watching this type of videos, this is an absolute standout one!!! If I could only show 3 vids to an aspiring producer this would defo be one of them. Only thing I feel was not covered is contextualisation i.e. knowing where your music stands in the scene/industry/genre. Cause a firm grasp of that allows for a strategy that, although not for everyone, definitely yealds results: shock and awe. Submit a track to a label that, withing the context, will be so different that either by love or hate or sheer confusion the A&R will be forced to discuss it further with their team/boss, leading to worst case scenario remembering your name and best case signing the track. Has worked well for me so far.
music is simple build up but hard to master the simplicity is the ultimate sophistication and its true example watch the sample breakdown from all kind of producers there not hard to sample or to set together but the creativity and the idea how you want it to be is the key
As someone who went through Cosmic Academy bootcamp and is a member, I can’t stress enough how valuable the program has been for me. The coaches and community really care about your growth and you learn so much which will help you break the habits that have kept you stuck.
Since I did your program two years ago, I've finished so many (bad) songs but I feel myself getting better and learning with each song. Honestly appreciate all you do! Keep up these videos too, it's the boost I need sometimes :)
i really appreciate how this video fits around all genres, ive seen so many videos where its only based around a specific genre but you made it work for everyone love this vid thx for all of the advice.
I greatly appreciate you saying that!! We whole heartedly believe in teaching our students that way too! “Learn how to drive and you can drive any car” is my fav saying haha. As dumb as it is, it applies to music/production/artistry! We all use the same core concepts, tools, and techniques…no matter the genre. Learn to produce and you can produce anything 👊♥️
I used to produce back in the 90s, it was House, Rave etc, I was also a career DJ and well I kinda ticked all the boxes of the things you shouldnt do as a DJ! (cryptic i know) but I lost my way with production and centered on the DJing - for 35 years. Fast forward to 2025 and im now back as a DJ (but only streaming as i now have another business). So i wanna pick up the baton again and you hit the nail when you mentioned Results and also skill level and 'your' sound. I know what i want, through DJing i know 'my sound', i know what style i want to produce, however the frustrating part is the process to getting that 'sound' and for me this is the fly in the ointment, its the thought of having to totally re-learn production (its changed a little bit since using an ATARI and Cubase!). NGL this is whats holding me back, it's having the patience to do it all again. Im no spring chicken (53yo) and it scares me that i dont have the time to learn it all again, im scared! This video you made is so good, thank you, its given me a path, a map, a way to go about it all over again. 🙏👍👊
thank youuuu and happy this could help and inspire! i can say, with certainty, its never too late to learn! just from my own experience teaching the students here at cosmic...ive taught several who are over 40 and 50! You also have the strong DJ'ing background which usually accelerates the learning curve on the production side. You already have an understanding of song structure, arrangement, the instrumentation, etc. You know whats in these songs...its just a matter of learning how to create it yourself. No easy feat...but absoluteyyyyy possible ❤️👊
You can do it! If you treat the learning process like a degree and spend 4 years honing your craft while releasing music, then by the time you're 58 you should be on your feet! That's still a lot of time to create music you love
@@TheCosmicAcademy thanks mate, im actually gonna print out the tips and put them on the wall, a reference to glance at when things get a little bogged down. cheers ;)
I burst in laughter at 4:47😂😂I personally am an ambient artist but can create many different genres and i fully agree with all the points made in this video as it reflects a lot with some past mistakes and realizations that i did & had! Music is one the most beautiful Art and the possibilities are endless...
Wow - this is very inspiring. I have basic production skills but I'm afraid to use them and finish full tracks because I'm afraid they'll suck. I've fallen victim to the 8-bar rut so many times, and 2025 is the year where I finish what I start. From an aspiring producer, thank you.
Don’t get me wrong, this video has been so so helpful, and a great reminder about things I should be giving my attention to. But I just have to say, I love moose so much 😂💜
Great tips!! I especially resonate with #1 - find people that bring energy to the music you make and listen to and everything will flow automatically ✨ I would add #16: find what works for you personally! Lots of folks join the EDM artist train for the fame/gigs, but if you don't inherently love or learn to love the process, you're gonna be miserable all the way.
two more lessons I'd like to add are those: create a routine for your music. Means, when you wake up with a drink, go through your ideas. Think about at least two or three songs you've worked on. One session that's recent, another session, that's a while back and the third one, that is way back, that you almost forgot about it. Take up to an hour of time to work on that, with what you've learned up to now. Lesson two: listen to your music in different states: when you're tired, when you're dizzy, when you're fully awake, when you were outside (after groceries/work/a jog/a walk with your dog, just anything that makes you get away from your studio). You'll notice that in different states, you pinpoint things from different angles or just hear things that weren't supposed or just accidentially fit your song, like backround reverbtails or instrumentations you put that much way back in the panorama, that at a certain point it might be a surprise to listeners. Let me explain this to you: I sometimes like to hear a duo called 'The Outside Agency' they're a Crossbreed (Industrial Breakbeat Hardcore) duo and they did about 160 songs from 1994 up to now and some of their songs, have such subtle detail that even though I heard some songs for over 40 times in different states, I still discover things I never heard before, an echoed backseated snare, an ambience sound that shimmers nearly unheard through a section of a song. :D Think about what you reference and for what reason you use this reference AND try to be as objective as possible. I tell you, that it should NEVER be your most liked artist, because if you use this as reference you lose the subtility and are prestated of what this artist is doing in his songs and it narrows down your decisions to a flat point, where others say, okay cool artist, but makes this special?
Lesson two is a great one - it's also important to consider if you're every doubting your track or just not feeling it, you may be in a bad mental state, which just furthers how important it is to listen to it in different contexts.
For now I use loops cuz I just started in January and want to master that, I sometimes make my own beats but sound trap is weird and Band lab quits on my phone. I want to make a girl group and want to be talented so I'm working on producing, I know mixing and mastering already now. As I practiced this whole week so far and last week, and for me it isn't THAT hard. I wrote 4 albums 5 eps! When I hear instrumental I think of melody then lyrics I'm only 13 but I still want to try
Hey, to expand on lesson 14, if you make great music but suck at content, remember that impression is everything. And if the content sucks, the impression on your music will be that it sucks as well… it’s a skill set of its own, so remember it takes practice. Coming from someone who is proud of their music but has made some poor social media content representing it, be careful how you share it.
....... There are still a myriad of factors in between, like age, location, time available, contacts, money available, luck and more. I have more or less 4 decades of experience in the business, began playing and touring in pop bands, writing own songs while recording demos in grotty and lousy studios I developed an interest in recording techniques and production. Later I studied Classical Orchestration and Composition. My first purchase was a Tascam 464, later I added a Kawai Q80 MIDI sequencer and 2 sound modules blah blah blah. I worked in 4 different countries, wrote music for 4 theatricals and 1 short film and actually I am teaching guitar and bass. My next dream is working in the film industry as composer but without the right contacts is virtually impossible, and I am really outdated with the new techniques. All in all, it´s not always about the creative flux, talent, skills or deadlines....... As Aristotle once said "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts".
I implemented all these lessons years ago (except the social media and connections one, which is my weak point) and "finished" hundreds of tracks, but I still cannot make my music sound professional. I guess I need thousands more hours of practice..
No one ever thought it was easy! And personally, i don't think it even takes talent. The most proficient and brilliant band i know is unknown to the masses.
