    Smallest, thinest knife with all the tools Josh said is Hiker if you are wondering... next best option is Camper, Hunstman or Fieldmaster
    if you can do without a saw the cheapes one is Spartan, brand new as low as 16 euro i have found (i am in Europe)

    Would like to try my hand at some very basic whittling (faces), and I found your Channel! Imagine my surprise when I saw your SAK and realized the 30 year old SAK Tinker I thought I ruined by bad sharpening is now the perfect whittling knife! Thank you for that! 🖖🙂

      I know it has been awhile since you made this comment, but thanks, I hope to have more videos like this soon. I love me some SAK whittling.

    Nice and simple Josh, I think I'll follow along after I dig up some Victorinox Hiker I know I'm have about. Then I have the saw and the 3d philips driver too for comfort.

      Cool, I am uploading the first video in the series in just a little bit. I hope you enjoy them.

    I like it....a piece of wet dry sand paper on the back side of the strop 800 or 900 grit would work as a sharpener. It's become much finer after a couple uses.

      That is a good idea, I may attach a piece if I find I need it.

    When you pick up your sticks for carving practice make sure you get fairly soft wood. Leave the maple, cherry, oak, hickory etc alone and go for willow, basswood even sycamore.

    • @JoshsShop
      @JoshsShop  10 місяців тому

      The softer woods do make it easier, although as long as the wood is green I find i don't mind going a little further into the hardness spectrum.

    Sak hiker is ideal for this

    pencil: look in the make-up section. There's plenty tiny pencils in all colors with a cap included. Just don't get the softest ones. Also pencils that don't need sharpening, you just push out the stuff every time.

      I never thought to look there, thanks for the tip.

    The first sak I turned into a carving sak, was a recruit.
    The Keychain eye I remove . Because it gets in the way.

      I usually don't mind the loop, and I like to be able to put the knife on a suspension clip so I can carry it in my pocket. That said, I can see why some would like to get rid of it.

      @@JoshsShop maybe the hand size is a factor. I have very small hands. En can really get a got close grip to the blade.

      I'm sure that is true.

    I’m wondering if you’ve tried the Swiss Army “Electrician”? The small knife does have a notch….. but just wondering. Great vids!

    • @JoshsShop
      @JoshsShop  Рік тому +1

      I haven't tried the small blade on the electrician, but I imagine it would be a pretty good carving blade. The only issue would be that the electrician blade is a bit taller and it might make it harder to get into tighter places and curves.

    I have no idea about whittling, but I've seen people who turned their SAK bottle opener into a chisel by grinding the screw driver tip sharp. Wouldn't that be useful for this project?

    • @JoshsShop
      @JoshsShop  2 роки тому +1

      I have seen that as well, and I have considered it. Although I hesitate because I wonder how comfortable I would feel using it without some method of locking it open. We shall see how things go, but I stick with things the way they are. Also, I find that I use the screwdriver often for non-whittling things, and I would miss it.

    I'm thinking that a Harvester (93 mm Alox) would be a great knife for this project, because:
    - no back tools (and no key ring), so no hot spots to worry about (I only thought about this because you mentioned the cork screw)
    - inline awl, which is probably more convenient to use, at least in my experience
    - alox scales with a good grip
    - I guess the hawkbill blade would be at least as good for whittling as the pen blade (modified or not)
    - if you would turn the bottle opener into a chisel, than you would only have useful tools on it for whittling, and nothing else
    (An Electrician Plus might be even better because it already comes with a sheepsfoot blade, and it even has a rounded chisel ground portion, which could be useful for rounding stuff off, I guess. But that's discontinued for a long time, and not cheap and not easy to find nowadays.)

    • @miklospinter

      (Harvester = "Swiss Army 7" nowadays)

    • @JoshsShop
      @JoshsShop  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah the Harvester/ Swiss Army Seven would be a great choice. I even considered getting one just for this video series, but I already had the field master, so I think I will make due with what I have. I also didn't pick one up because I made a "Whittling Farmer." An Alox Farmer with the can opener replaced by a Flexcut carving blade (I made a video about it). It's a great knife, and I would use it for these videos, but I wanted this to feel more accessible to folks. I didn't want people to think they needed a crazy modded knife to be able to complete these projects.
      I agree with you, the inline awl is an awesome tool, better than the one on the 91mm knives. If I did get my hands on a harvester I would for sure modify the hawkbill blade to suit my needs for whittling.

      The SA7 doesn't have the saw. And a saw is so so useful on a sak.

    • @JoshsShop
      @JoshsShop  2 роки тому

      The Swiss Army Alox 7 has a saw, perhaps we are talking about two different knives?
