Fiddle Leaf Fig....over rated in MY opinion. Yes, I have one and if I knew what it would be like I wouldn’t have bought it 😩. It’s finally growing and doing okay, but still. I would have put my $$ elsewhere.😊
I think our biggest mistake is getting plants with an expectation of what they should look like. I have 3 out of the 5 and they grow beautifully(IMO) in my home but definitely not like the ones on Instagram. In other words let's do research on these plants and environments and be realistic that they will not grow in our homes like they would in other homes and even less than their natural environment. Also don't buy a plant because it's trending. Make sure you want it. (:
Love the Philodendron Birkin, it’s an easy grower, with its cute little pinstripes. But you better get that thing for under $20! It’s perfectly rated if you get it for a reasonable price.
surprised the verrucosum is on the list 😮 (and on a lot of ppl's 'no' list). It was a random purchase for me but I absolutely fell in love since it's such a fast grower and produces such nice leaves. keeping an eye on it in case it gets spidermites.
Before the pandemic plant collecting craze happened, (spurred on by social media,) a 4” Pink Princess only cost about $10. If anything is driving up plant prices, it’s IG and YT.
Agree Philo. Verruscosum does seem to attract those pesky spider mites! Game changer for me with this plant was putting it under a grow light .I don't use a moss pole just a long bamboo hoop which i attach it to- continually pushing out new leaves which are getting bigger closer to the light it goes. Also not near a humidifier and I have a hot air blow heating system here in the UK. I think because of the heating system spider mites are attracted. House humidity does not drop below 30% all year and gets up to about 55% .
My verrucosum ate it after I took it out of my greenhouse. The melano is chill and grows fast and is super easy to propagate. I’m gonna put mine on some wood to climb so it gets some bigger leaves.
I have my verru next to my humidifier on my desk. And it has been my most grateful and easy plant. Proped it numerous times and it just regrows like weed. Never had spidermites problem either 🤞 You will be fine. I have a similar story with my melo ... dropped all its leaves. I choped it and now I'm trying my luck with wetsticks.
This is really the question I was asking when I questioned your thoughts on the importing trend. The trend makes you think it’s so easy because Instagram is flooded with the pics and just hitting the order button is easy. But we are set up for failure when you don’t realize without giving it practically a biosphere home it will not continue in its glory.
You might know about this video, but Here... But Not here on UA-cam has a super interesting video about getting larger leaves on aroids! His melanochrysum is literal goals 😍 Anyway, awesome video! I definitely agree with you about most of these plants 🌱
In my experience, the philodendron verrucosum and melanochrysum are very easy to keep, and I've never had any issues with spider mites or any other pest. Go figure!
I love the tea comparison, it's easier for people to understand that different opinions are ok with that type of reference, good idea! I love green tea and chai tea BTW 😁
My turtles have been super easy going in a wide & shallow pot. Yours might like that :) I water it pretty often but when I forget, they're still fine. They don't seem to do well when they get super long.
the string of turtles has been on my wishlist for so long but i'm definitely gonna be doing more research after this! i agree with a lot of other comments in that i like to have my plants around here and there in the open in my apartment, i would despise having to have a cloche or greenhouse and i am absolutely unwilling to invest in a humidifier or grow lights lol. i love my plants but i'm also super frugal, i've never spent more than 10 $ on a plant and refuse to spend any more than that on any extras that would be necessary for any one plant!
Thank you for this video and for your thoughts on the individual plants. I am all about the learning!😊. For me, my plants are an enjoyable hobby. I seem to learn the most from my more difficult plants, however, you can’t beat the joy of watching a healthy Brazil plant thrive! 🥰🪴🌿. Take care and stay safe!
I don't think I've had any of these, which is perfectly fine with me. I'm with you, I don't want plants that are going to be a chore to take care of. I want them to be beautiful, and low maintenance. I don't want greenhouses or humidifiers. And there are loads of plants that fit that category thankfully!!!
My string of turtles has always been super easy! Granted, the room is very humid and I also live in the south east (United States) but even then it just grows like a weed and has always done really well in my space. Maybe the difference is our respective climates?
String of turtles is the bane of my plant life. No matter what I do with it, it is never happy and leaves drop off constantly. It’s so cute and I knew it was supposed to be awkward when I bought it, but I had no idea just how much I’d be annoyed by it!

@@GEOMETRICINK I have a string of pearls which I know loads of people struggle with - It’s huge and gorgeous. I think everyone has a few plants that *no matter what* will always be a struggle but that does not make it any less infuriating!
Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only one struggling with the string of turtles! I've kept it in a plastic bag with spaghnum moss. It's been on its own for a few months now. But I'm glad to know it's not my fault!
My SOT and I are best friends at this point. I got it as cuttings so at first I was having a harder time, with getting it going. I've now figured out the right method for propping them for me AND they are doing well in my home in regular humidity. It's even flowering now. I live in Tucson. Go figure :)

For me it was the peperomia ruby cascade. I had two of those in short succession and they both shriveled up and died really quickly. I don't have time for plants that have a 'piss poor attitude,' as Nick Pileggi would say! :D
I agree with you about the hype on these plants. I only recently got a small Birken , which I love, but I wouldn’t pay the prices foe some of these plants that are way too much time & energy to enjoy.
String of turtles is in my top 3 favourite plants and I have several. I can’t relate to the idea that they are difficult to take care of. For me it is one of the easiest plants I have and I don’t do anything special with it, they sit out with all my other plants 🤷♀️
Yasss!! I totally agree with the pink princess! I used to really want one but I realised that, aside from the pink variegation, I'm not actually a big fan of the plant. And agree with what you said about melanochrysum - micans is better 🙊 The verrucosum is like number one on my wishlist 😂 but I'm glad to know beforehand what a diva she is. Love the video!! 💕
I'm very surprised you're having trouble with Peperomia prostrata. I have two of them, one that i bought in my old apartment, where there wasn't a lot of light, and it withered away. It's doing better now that it sits in a south facing window, and it's pushing out new growth, but it's still sparse. I love it though, because it's a fighter. The other one i bought in the new apartment, and so far it's only lost maybe one or two leaves that i knocked off, and it's growing like crazy in that same window the other one is in.
My Peperomia Prostrata is my favorite plant. It’s my fastest grower, beautiful deep markings. Mine went from a 4 inch that wasn’t trailing to a 6 inch very full pot, nearing 12 inch trailing vines within less than a year. I live in St Louis area and keep mine in a hanging basket about a foot from a south facing window. My average house humidity is around 30-50 depending on the day.
Hey there, love your vids big time but want to make a remark. Philodendron PP, is a variegation that occurs in nature, not a cultivar as many think. The variegation is unstable, but can come back even after several speckled leaves. I frown a bit over the pruning for variegation i must admit, that's a step too far for me. In my setting, when the plant is in direct light, i also see the backside of the leaves and they have this amazing pink rim around them which you cant see from front side of the leaf. The erubescens is also the plant that was used in creating cultivars like red Congo and prince of orange. This made me have more respect for the plant. I also like its more bare growing pattern with long internodes, which gives it an architectural quality. But again, as you said in this vid and as the French say: Les gouts et les couleurs on ne discute pas. :) Keep making great vids ! Rafael, Brussels
I live in VT and Maine (at school) and my string of turtles has grown extremely well I just keep it hanging in the window and it is rarely above 50% humidity in my room (also I did this all winter as well) .... I do feel like the leaves fall off when I take it to the sink to water it or move it in the car and its stems get tangled but he’s constantly flowering! (Of course we all have our own experiences I can not keep most succulents alive and my favorite cactus turned in to liquify mush on the bottom for no reason ☹️). I love your videos btw! Sometimes plants are rude and just decide they want to die 😂
I am so with you on this list. My melanochrysum is a struggle constantly. I decided I'm going to sell it. I also just got the verrucosum and already had spidermites on it. It is now residing in my Ikea greenhouse cabinet. I have never liked the string of turtles either.
My string of turtles gets ignored on its south windowsill and while it’s not as big as yours, but it’s happy and growing. It survived the week of no power in Texas during freezing temps with no damage. Humidity usually around 50% inside.
I agree with your thoughts on the birkin. I didn’t end up getting it during the hype phase when I found one because I didn’t see what was so special about it. I was tempted to get it but only because everyone else wanted it to badly, which is a terrible reason to by a plant! 😝 I love my string of turtles though. For some reason it’s doing really well for me even though I live in a dry area and have no humidifier. I haven’t moved it from its spot for fear that it might die LOL
I’m so glad you pointed out the String of Turtles. While the plant is gorgeous, it’s reallyyyyyyy hard to take care of. I was lucky enough to find two 10” hanging baskets at my local Lowe’s but after having them for a couple months I wouldn’t buy them again.
Had no idea string of turtles was a Peperomia. I discovered them with the succulents and cacti, so I figured it was the same as a string of pearls. Ended up getting pearls at my local nursery instead because they didn't have turtles (or maybe they had them in a better place). So glad I didn't get them!
Wow, I wouldn't have pegged String of Turtles as hard but I guess that's because of where I live. Mine is just stuck in a pot on the windows in my bedroom, watered when I remember and grow like mad! LOL Totally agree on Poo Princess though! I do NOT get the hype at alllllllll! Even the "well variegated, high colour" ones look gauche to me!
I think you got super lucky with your Calathea Zebrina. While I keep a house full of prayer plants of every vareity, stromanthe, marante and calathea...I did not have as much success with the Zebrina. I do think a lot comes down to the health of the plant when you receive/purchase it and if it's over watered or stressed for any reason, I don't care what plant it is...unless it's a montera or pothos, it's pry going to struggle. Unfortunately, it's a lot harder to get 2nd chances with really expensives plants but sometimes a second chance with a different plant from a different greenhouse or one you personally selected that didn't come in the mail, is all you need to change your mind and experience with that plant.
I agree with you Becca, this is your opinion and yes those plants are over hyped. I like the String if Turtles but it's true they are hard to take care of. And yes , Melanochrysum was in my wishlist before but it was so expensive and hard to take care of so I just buy Micans.
It’s kinda funny, because I think that most of these your see as overrated because you struggled with them- which is completely relevant for you! Definitely some on here that are classic and pretty easy- especially the melano (they’re much easier than people realize). Totally agree with the difficulty of the verru!
I do agree with you about the boobie plant. I saw one that size at a very popular nursery here in Houston for $100. I really like it, but not that much. lol. I’ll wait until the hype dies down and pay a cheaper price for it. I just bought a 3” pot of SOT and I plan on keeping it in my cloche, so I’m ok with that. Great video 💚
I don't know if you'll see this, but I might have a fix for your string of turtles. Mine was doing what yours is, and I was so bummed by it. Then I got advice to put it in a North window instead of East. I know, it sounds contrary to what you should do, but boy did it work. I put it there this winter, and now my SoT is going crazy. It's a complete turtlefest, lolol. So hopefully this will work for you too. Have an awesome day 😊💚
this makes me sad because i love string of turtles so much, but yeah they genuinely suck and shrivel up the second you pull them from a terrarium. i wish they'd be more full and happy without so much humidity ugh
I’ve had the calathea zebrina for a couple weeks and I feel like it is easier than the verrucosum. I have had to start that plant over twice now. And it’s just not my favorite at all.
Lol I just bought a Birkin it's my first philo! I've been eyeing it for a while I love the leaves, I didn't think it's overhyped it seems like a very common plant
I just recently bought a HUGE beautiful pot of turtles. I'll make sure to put it on the shelf right over my humidifer. I finally pulled the trigger on a baby PPP that has a good amount of varigation. I got it for less than $100 so I *feel* like it was an ok purchase. I like the reverted form just fine so it's a win either way.
String of turtles needs so much more light than people think. I just have mine in a regular room with not exceptionally high humidity here in Phoenix but it is literally hanging just below a skylight along with a string of pearls and bananas. All are getting tonsss of sun and doing well there.
Girl! You are killing me. Lol. I just bought a Verrocosum...my dream plant. Grows in an indoor greenhouse though 😁 Also have a Melanochrysum, and it grows like a weed...each leaf bigger than the last. They are demanding plants only if you don't have the right environment.
Melanochrysum with big leaves that start pushing small ones are almost always top cuttings from mature plants that don’t have enough roots to support mature leaves. Cut the first small leaf off to propagate and let the mother plant root up, and try and get another node in the substrate too, if possible. I did this and immediately got much bigger leaves. Also misting the new leaves as they come in is super helpful for keeping them from breaking off. Melanochrysum weirdly got a reputation for being “easy” rare plants and cuttings are cheap enough that a lot of people get them while still relatively inexperienced and then struggle. Do your yourself a favor and spend the money and get a splendid. You will have none of these problems 😂.
The whole white knight/princess/wizard trilogy. They barely have any differences between all of them but people feel like they need to own them all. Also - Me looking over at my favorite plant, my SOT 👀 and knowing I’m picking up my first verru this weekend 👀👀 I def think you should keep trying with these plants! Sometimes we have bad experiences because we don’t have the right set up! I keep my turtles in my terrarium now but I never did before and she was fine over winter. I’d say for a lot of these the key to a nice plant is a really good, strong grow light!
Living in Southeast Asia here. It's humid all year round, and in my home, it averages around 70% humidity and even up to 80+ on rainy days... that means there's really no need for a humidifier for my plants but it's also uncomfortable most of the time
While I agree with some of these, like PPP being ugly af, some of the others that supposedly don't grow well for people is the result of wanting the plant to fit our living conditions, as opposed to providing it with conditions closest to its origin. It's like if someone says huskies are overrated dogs but they've never given them the opportunity to work/pull sleds/showcase their full potential. I think that's the flaw in the attitudes of the majority of plant hobbyists who start diving into more "collector" plants. They still hold the mentality of having plants as furniture rather than as a collection. There's nothing wrong with this attitude because not everyone wants a greenhouse inside their home, but don't expect these plants to flourish for you.
Reminds me of something one of my aunts used to say, "Honey, if you can't say something nice about something... well come over here and sit by me honey."
Honestly, this might be an unpopular opinion, I don't like any of the "string of" plants. They just don't appeal to me at all. I much prefer fuller trailing plants!
The turtles are my favorite becauseit's one of my favorite animals. I never had a problem, I always felt it was easy and thankfully mine is thriving. I agree with the pink princess, without all the pink I wouldn't take a second look. Though philodendrons are a favorite of mine in general. Love your videos.
Haha I am DEFINITELY a part of the PPP Haters Club. 🤣🤣 Like, the pink color is goooorgeous don't get me wrong -- but the growth pattern! So unattractive!! And the pricetag just makes it that less desirable to me. Definitely not worth it IMO!
I’m so confused why you think the string of turtles need to be in an enclosed space? Lol mine is just in my window, thriving. I guess I haven’t had any issues, even during winter in PA. They just need a good amount of light, I feel like they are one of my easiest plants that thrive on neglect. Agree, no bueno with the PPP.
I feel monsteras and fiddle leaf figs are overrated. They take up too much space and don't do very much. Great for an office space, but I can't use up my precious space for these large plants. I think that crown of thorns are pretty underrated. There are so many unique hybrids, but no one really collects them in America. Great for window culture, can last for generations and you can neglect the heck out of it.
I use lechuza pon for my aroids so that helps. But one trick for combatting fungus gnats that smells great is sprinkling some cinnamon on top of the soil. Maybe that’ll kill two birds with one stone?
String of anything is hard even for me but i live a challenage but i have dealt with plants since i was 18 and watched my folks make it look eady. But i was raised in CA and growing there was easy here in Indiana with the 4 seasons pronounced is harder. Cactus is water haters so some springs are sometimes rot time when i take them out. Echecerias and such i don't they light for so not good.
I most def agree with the string of turtles and the ppp! IMO anything that has the potential to revert is not worth it to me. Oan.. I usually watch ads to help out but they've been like 20 mins long lately 🙄 sorry Becca! I always feel guilty skipping but I'm not watching a boring 20 min ad 😬
I don’t want any plants that I have to put in a cabinet or a cloche. I like looking at them and I want them to be decorative, not necessarily a display or collection.

Prices in US are crazy, I got mine for 7,99 and for The Netherlands that's already on the more expensive side 🤣
I got a 10 inch for $12 at Home Depot as well as an agleonema pictum tricolor for $8!
Just found mine at a grocery store the other day for 15.99
Not really under 20 but I got mine for 25 and it already had 2 fairly sized babies so I basically got 3 for 25 and I love them 😭

Put your string of turtles in a self watering pot / African Violet pot.... it makes all the difference! 💚
100% the key is bottom watering!
I just spit my tea 🍵out when you said you like peppermint tea ... because I was sipping on my cup of hot peppermint tea...lol
I am so with you on this list. My melanochrysum is a struggle constantly. I decided I'm going to sell it. I also just got the verrucosum and already had spidermites on it. It is now residing in my Ikea greenhouse cabinet. I have never liked the string of turtles either.
It’s great to hear first hand experience about the reality of these plants. My birken is pretty chill, but I didn’t have to pay much for it ;)
My string of turtles gets ignored on its south windowsill and while it’s not as big as yours, but it’s happy and growing.
It survived the week of no power in Texas during freezing temps with no damage. Humidity usually around 50% inside.
I love my birkin! He’s so stinky cute and puts out new leaves all the time. Maybe it’s because I got mine as a 6” pot for $20 that I’m loving him 😅
I agree with your thoughts on the birkin.
Totally agree with you Becca. Thanks for talking about this sensitive topic.
My string of turtles lives in normal home humidity and Ive probably watered it twice since January and it's always in bloom
That’s incredible!
Speaking of tea, have you ever tried rooibos and earl grey? Magical.
Hi Becca! What is the name of the plant you held up at 9:28? The one you said you like more than the verrucosum?
It’s a goeppertia zebrina! (Formerly calathea)
Even the "well variegated, high colour" ones look gauche to me!
totally agree with SOT and PPP!! Haven't had the others and I think I will take them off my list now. thanks! (but I do now want a schlong cactus!)
So honest I love it keep growing be blessed
Would love a care tip video on the Goeppertia/calathea zebrina ❤️
Do you feel like the peperomia prostrata needs to be enclosed for humidity or for artificial or enhanced light?
For humidity!
They don't need to be enclosed
My sot(I have 3) all sit in a west facing window. I ignore them and they are thriving.
String of hearts expensive and quite small for the amount both the regular one and verigated total disappointment 😞
Totally surprised the calathea white fusion wasn't on here. That is truly the most ungrateful plant I've ever had😂😂😂😂
I agree with you Becca, this is your opinion and yes those plants are over hyped. I like the String if Turtles but it's true they are hard to take care of. And yes , Melanochrysum was in my wishlist before but it was so expensive and hard to take care of so I just buy Micans.
Definitely micans is the better choice 😂
I can't even find a micans that is reasonably priced 😭
Totally agree that turtle loses its attraction once we know how picky it is!! I live in tropical weather and still it’s hard for me!
Have an awesome day 😊💚
Turtlefest - loving that :)
this makes me sad because i love string of turtles so much, but yeah they genuinely suck and shrivel up the second you pull them from a terrarium. i wish they'd be more full and happy without so much humidity ugh
ive heard pink princess is injected and once the chemical fades away (only lasts long enough to sell) the pink fades too
That’s the pink Congo
They've been using gases on our food and other plants to give certain "desired effects" for a very long time, don't be deceived lol
I’ve had the calathea zebrina for a couple weeks and I feel like it is easier than the verrucosum. I have had to start that plant over twice now. And it’s just not my favorite at all.
Could you do a video of plants that are difficult to take care of or need more care than others?? (If you haven’t already) loves this!!🖤
Lol I just bought a Birkin it's my first philo! I've been eyeing it for a while I love the leaves, I didn't think it's overhyped it seems like a very common plant
It definitely is!! It’s pretty, but not worth massive hype IMO 😆
Important that they're getting light from above towards the dirt
String of turtles needs so much more light than people think. I just have mine in a regular room with not exceptionally high humidity here in Phoenix but it is literally hanging just below a skylight along with a string of pearls and bananas. All are getting tonsss of sun and doing well there.
Thanks for your honesty
I have my peperomia prostrata in a sort of dome situation in my living room and I love it! I want to get a terrarium for it
Girl! You are killing me. Lol. I just bought a Verrocosum...my dream plant. Grows in an indoor greenhouse though 😁 Also have a Melanochrysum, and it grows like a weed...each leaf bigger than the last. They are demanding plants only if you don't have the right environment.
Totally agree! Thanks for saying this!
You’re monstera adansonii is so beautiful!! I thought my moms was beautiful with its’s 8 inch vine!
OMG yess the white trilogy LOL
Bless you for uploading just as my working day is coming to an end, and for saying the word shlong.
😂
I don’t like peppermint tea, but I agree with your planty opinion! Lol
Loved this video, a lot of this had to be said🤣. I agree with a lot of it especially the SOT and the birkin 😉
If I knew the growth pattern of the PPPs I wouldn’t have bothered. I still have mine but it’s always a hot mess.
Reminds me of something one of my aunts used to say, "Honey, if you can't say something nice about something... well come over here and sit by me honey."
great vid! i'm surprised that the watermelon peperomia or the pilea peperomiodes isn't in here though
Only one of these I've had is a Verrucosum. It didn't arrive in the best 😕 shape. I tried to save it, now I'm over it lol
Agree with the string of turtles! I had one and its gone now 🙃 they are indeed picky ☹️
Honestly, this might be an unpopular opinion, I don't like any of the "string of" plants. They just don't appeal to me at all. I much prefer fuller trailing plants!
I'd be curious for you to revisit this to see if you still have the same opinion, if you would take any off the list, or add anymore to the list.
Can you do a video on how to combat soil smell in your house? Because I do be struggling with that🥴
I use lechuza pon for my aroids so that helps. But one trick for combatting fungus gnats that smells great is sprinkling some cinnamon on top of the soil. Maybe that’ll kill two birds with one stone?
Bottom water 😊
Omg we love the same tea 🥰 I also love rooibos ❤
String of anything is hard even for me but i live a challenage but i have dealt with plants since i was 18 and watched my folks make it look eady. But i was raised in CA and growing there was easy here in Indiana with the 4 seasons pronounced is harder.
Cactus is water haters so some springs are sometimes rot time when i take them out. Echecerias and such i don't they light for so not good.
I agree I don’t want plants that have to live in a cabinet
please do a home tour! and a sunroom tour!!!
@@HelloMama yeah I know. Just letting her know that they've been really long lately so if she sees a decrease in us watching them she'll know why.
