- Kirk wins again, everyone. We're back with more Tool, and he's been keeping this song from me for quite a while. I have heard "The Pot" in concert in 2019, but I was very unfamiliar with their music and it never registered, so this will feel like a first time listen. Now, we decided on the studio release over a live version so I could catch all the nuances without any visual distractions. Let's get analyzing!

Justin Chancellor, the bassist, playing the bass guitar, is one of the most underappreciated members of any band, not just Tool, but any band. He carries Tool's songs from start to finish and nobody seems to hear the intricacies of how he does it.
justin is one of the best musicians/bassists.
The last time I saw TOOL live, I sat on the side up from Adam and I had a clear view of Justin too and just watched him and his interplay between the band members. They are so tight and yet Justin still gets creative with his bass and just jams with his whole body. He is a joy, for sure.

First time my buddy showed me lateralus I almost lost my shit. It was my first tool song and we were drunk and coked out on his couch with his bad ass sound system. I was a STEM major in college so I picked up on the mathematical pattern almost immediately and all he said to me was “that’s why I showed YOU this song”. Been a tool fan ever since

I think one of Tool's biggest secrets of what makes their music so great and extremely powerful and intense is that all four instruments allow space for the other 3 and none of them ever seem out of place for this...knowing what NOT to play is half the trick.
They come forward and back then together. So flawlessly

You are a genius. I never thought about tool like this. But you are 100% correct. In all of the songs you can hear, in detail, every instrument.
Absolutely. It's what makes the songs sound so "full" and is responsible for that "bed of sound" characteristic that Elizabeth referred to. Everything slides in and out between the time slots of other sounds.
Can you think of examples where songs didn’t leave room for the various instruments?

I don't believe there is a single Tool song that uses only one time signature. From learning 'Schism' on drums, I can assure you that Carey's rhythmic fluidity is utterly flawless. Bars of 5/8, 7/8, 6/8 and 2/4 all woven together seamlessly.
Legend has it, Time asked Danny for his signature.
Parabola is pretty close, one section of 6 that can be counted in 4 with a quick 2/4 bar. Sober is all in 4. Vicarious I'm pretty sure is all in 5. Stinkfist. The grudge in 5. The patient in 5. Reflection. Triad kinda. A bunch off aenima and undertow.
There are a lot now that I'm checking it out! But your point is well taken, even the stuff that doesn't change meters is so syncopated or uses such crazy poly rhythms it often sounds like it does
@@ilikemusak Vicarious has at least three (more, I'm sure) 6/8 from what I remember, and at least one 4/4 somewhere (dissected most of the song with my teacher a while ago)

I once saw an interview with Kirk Hammett where he talked about the time Tool invited him to play one song with them. He said he could barely keep up because Tool was TOO TECHNICAL for HIM.

This is the album where Maynard dealt with his Mother's death after years of struggle and pain. The emotions are super high.

Zero mention of Justin's absolutely next-level bass work in this song
I wonder if sometimes the measure of truly masterful and genius bass-playing lies in how much it's overlooked. (I.e., it's so good you don't even notice it.) Not that I overlook it myself - I marvel at Justin's brilliant sense of timing and at how much he really contributes to all my favorite riffs in their songs. He fuckin' lays it down with a passion, and at times with pure fury.
She's not..all about that bass..but that bass is as badass as the rest of this band. They equal each other!
One of the things I love about this channel is that she explains to me, technically, why I love the songs that I love.

30:38 - There's no resolution there, because it resolves into the next track on the album, "Lipan Conjuring." The whole album is composed to be experienced as a single 75-minute track.
Most people don't know that tool makes 75 min tracks that they cut into an album. I think that is why fear innoculum is not as good. It was made in sessions of split production.

That's a funny thing to say about fear inoculum. Like every doing on it is a 75 minute track of its own, practically :) . More seriously, I think it's a fantastic album but it's not something you can just groove to while you go about your day. It demands your full attention in ways that their other work really doesn't. Less rock, really. But pretty amazing, IMHO.
Love albums that tell a story. Love the mastery of Tool. Flawless all around!
IMO The Pot is Maynard's greatest vocal performance. It's a very wordy and difficult song to sing. His pitch is impeccable and the way he builds intensity throughout the song makes his anger palpable. The screams that shift to sung notes are really difficult to pull off.

Essentially shaming the government for allowing a two-tier justice system, where if you’re rich or connected enough, you aren’t subject to the harsh penalties the government imposed on ‘criminals’ (aka average citizens) in the war on drugs.

I agree, I listen to a few other vocal coaches reacting, but she's my favorite. She really gets into all parts of the song, even beyond the vocals. Plus she has a super sweet Lilith statue. She's awesome!
When you hear "Who are you to wave your finger" live and freaking everybody in the hall chants along "you must have been ..." it will activate every neuron in your brain. I still get goose bumps when I think about it.

I vaguely remember this happening when I saw this live in 2019. As I said in the intro, I don't remember much about the concert as I wasn't familiar with Tool... but Danny blew me away.

It was wild. My second Tool concert was the release tour for 10,000 Days. None of us really knew the songs yet. A lot of our reactions were actually kind of low for the album (which seems to consistently be a pattern with Tool albums until we actually have the time to listen to them). And a few years ago I went to my fourth Tool concert and just the way the crowd existed during The Pot and the way Maynard was performing on stage was transcendental almost (the contact high probably helped).
Of course, living in Arizona, nothing goes over quite the same as their big push for Ænema with the Arizona crowd. You'll never hear that song done better.
Some fans believe that the length of time refers to how long the frontman’s mother, Judith Marie, was left paralysed following a stroke in the mid-'70s before her passing in 2003. There certainly is some connection considering one of the tracks is titled Wings For Marie (Pt. 1) - and it wouldn’t be the first time Maynard has referenced her either, his debut single with A Perfect Circle sharing her first name.
In 2010 documentary Blood Into Wine, the singer/wine producer explained that his Nagual Del Judith cabernet sauvignon was “named after my mother, Judith Marie. She passed away several years ago. She was an invalid for almost 30 years. She had an aneurysm when she was about 31. It left her paralysed on the right side of her body, and so she couldn’t really do a lot of travelling, couldn’t do much of anything really - read, write, speak, walk, tell time. You know, having to live roughly 29 years in that state.”
There’s a touching moment where the singer reveals how he chose to continue her journey through his adventures in viticulture. “It just kind of felt like this was the obvious solution, to spread her ashes over the vineyard,” he reflected. “That way, she kind of comes back in the form of vines and grapes, and she gets to travel the world now and see other places.”
I never knew that about Maynard's mother, but as soon as I read the first sentence it instantly gave a whole new level of meaning to the APC song you mentioned, "Judith". I'd always wondered who Judith was. So how old would Maynard have been when his mother had that aneurysm? Sheds a new light on his music, that's for sure.
Tool is what I believe to be next-generation Rush. Everything is so tight on all fronts! Tool is definitely the forefront of nineties progressive rock. The mind trip, then all instrument and vocal clarity and message.
So true although I like Tool way better (and I AM Canadian). I also feel like the band Chevelle has continued the style of Tool in their original trajectory from the early albums (around Undertow up to this Album) while actual Tool seems to have gone in new and interesting directions.

I think Dream Theater is more similar to Rush by style (including vocals on the first two LaBrie's albums) and also they too have tracks that take half the album

The Pot is also a reference to the old saying "The pot calling the kettle black", or a more literal translation "A pot and kettle blackened by the same fire". Just another level to the calling out of hypocrisy. He even mentions his black kettle, on which someone has urinated. Just when you think you have unraveled the meaning of a song, another thread emerges.
There was a time that people had things called champer pots. I kind of private pot to pee in. Now consider that annoying stoner roomate who always pisses on toilet seat.

Well yeah they had a pretty lengthy battle about rights/royalties and this song is about the lawyer being a liar/lawyer.
Justin Chancellor always blows me away with his talent on bass. He's right up there with my favorite bassists.

It feels funky because Danny is playing a 16th note triple beat on top of a 3/4 time. His accents make it feel different, which is why he is so freaking good.

I once heard Tool described as "stealth-prog" and I can't think of a better way to put it. To the untrained ear it sounds like rage and ferocity, but to anyone with musical background, the technical prowess they display is so powerful and compelling.

also on another level, i listened to tools first album for maybe the 10th time on mushrooms as a passenger in a car many years ago. it was cranked. i heard all the sneaky background things going on for the first time. amazing.
When Tool toured with King Crimson, Danny Carey asked Robert Fripp if Fripp could hear the profound King Crimson influence in Tool. Fripp replied apologetically that he didn't recognize any. Carey said that was one of the greatest compliments he'd ever heard.

While I appreciate your point I disagree. I have played Tool for people that are clueless about music with no technical background and they appreciate the prowess and genius. I don’t know a damn thing about art but when I see a beautiful painting by a a master I can appreciate the mastery and technical prowess
As a teenager listening to this at volumes that almost damaged my hearing, its wonderful to come back to this song 20+ years later and have a musician tell me I was listening to good music. Thanks for helping me understand more of what tool was about because sadly, I never was good at figuring out what they were singing about I just know I loved the energy.

Being a huge Tool (& APC, Puscifer) fan I am not only impressed but inspired by your reviews. Your being a vocal coach and trained singer to reveal the intricacies of Maynards writing and singing is just great. Your overwhelming reaction to Danny being "otherworldly" on point as well. You make reference to some of Adam's riffs and transitions but oddly never mention one of the greatest prog rock basses ever? Justin Chancellor.... The greatest rhythm section in rock.
I've noticed a couple of times that she thinks Justin's bass is the guitar when he's playing higher on the neck. She has called Justin out for being an excellent bassist at least once, however.
I really respect the fact that you take time to actually do research before reacting. Its important to know whats in the pool before you go diving in, so to speak. I also love the way you break down and analyze every aspect of a song and how you bring your knowledge of music theory into the mix. Very well done. Keep up the good work.

I’m surprised that there was no mention of Justin Chancellor’s bass part in the beginning. That’s one of the best parts of the whole song IMO.

I usually don't subscribe when people pause the song so many times. But, when you do it, it's out of pure appreciation and inquisitiveness. Then you proceed to enlighten us with your knowledge of music and it just makes it all worthwhile to me. You have made what I find a nuissance ( ususally ) an education, thank you for that.

If you want a closer look at Danny Carey's drumming, there is a great video of the song "Pneuma" with a drum cam focused on him. It's not a good video for analyzing the vocals or other instruments, but it's a great close up of how amazing he is.
That video is fkn sick, I'm almost 100% sure by now that Danny Carey is either some alien, or a cyborg sent from the future to destroy humanity...or teach us drums...some of those.
I have probably listened to Pneuma hundreds of times, but the first time I saw the video I was amazed. I must have rewound every section at least 5 times, for about an 80 minute viewing of a 11 1/2 minute video. Then watched several drummer reactions to listen to their analysis.
Forgot to add there is another video for Right in Two which focuses on Danny Carey, which is just as amazing.

I really appreciate the fact that you chose the studio recording for this. I can understand why you tend toward music videos and live performances for most of your content, but sometimes it’s best just to LISTEN and experience the song in the form that it was intended to be first taken in.
Best reaction channel ever. Elizabeth is so entertaining to watch, because you can literally see her brain whirring away at lightning speed, causing her eyes to flutter. That and she knows her stuff.

Honestly, I think "when you piss all over my black kettle" is a brilliant line.
Same, and once I finally actually read the lyrics years later it tied the real (?) meaning behind “The Pot” together beautifully. Of course I initially (and as a stoner) thought the obvious, but now think the “you must’ve been so high” is referencing the height of one’s horse.

Maynard has said that the reason he stands at the back of the stage beside the drum kit is because he doesn’t look at himself as a frontman. He considers the vocals to literally be just another instrument of the band with no more or less importance than any other instrument.
As for the time signatures, they can be hard to nail down with Tool because, at times, although each member is echoing the same musical theme, they are all playing in slightly different time signatures at the same time, including Maynard’s vocals. I mean Danny Carey can play one time signature with his left hand and another with his right. Pneuma, particularly the isolated live drum cam video, is a great example of this.
This creates almost like a dissonance in the sound despite them all being thematically the same which is one of the many joys of Tool’s music.
They aren’t playing in different time signatures. That’s not really how music works.
They might be playing different feels/metric pulses over top each other (usually called a polyrhythm) but they’re all countable within the same overall signature.
Also almost all of this song is in 4 with the bridge in 6. The syncopation is intense, cause, y’know, Tool, but the pulse is very straightforward.
Yet he does that with Pussifer and A Perfect Circle. Maynard is fuggin amazing. Got to See Tool with King Crimson a while back. Bad ass show.
His vocals are definitely doubled on a lot of songs on this album. He had a keyboard with his vocal samples on it that he would play live during this tour to harmonize with himself. It was pretty amazing.

Also.... Side note about tool... They are all equal. They all play different instruments. Including Maynard. There is no "front man". He is just the singer/lyricist.

The grudge. Maynard holds a 24 second scream towards the end of the song. Parabol/parabola is one of the greatest songs ever written, it single handedly made me a tool fan. Last the live version of pushit off of the salival box set is hands down Maynard's best performance.

Danny is a fucking genius when it comes to his drumming. I call him an "off beat" drummer, someone who finds the silence between riffs and fills it with a drum or cymbal. It's rare as hell to find a drummer that is capable of doing this, most just carry the beat that closely monitors the guitars. Where in Danny's case, he is the "background" the "Void filler", which is for me, what makes him so fucking amazing because he does this in such diverse and technical ways that keeps the Complexity Seeking part of my brain completely engaged and pleased.

In my humble opinion Tool is the modern day Pink Floyd and they are two of the greatest artists/ bands of all time. GOATS 🐐
Danny Carey is basically the drummer everyone aspires to be, he's amazing. To me their next best songs are 7empest (10+ min of pure amazing!) which of course they just won a grammy for recently, and Invincible. pretty genius stuff.
I have probably listened to the whole Fear Inoculum album more than 200 times. And each listen, it gets better and better. For me personally, Invincible is my favorite song from the album. It’s magnificent.

IMO 1 - Descending, 2 - Invincible, 3 - Pneuma, 4 - 7empest, 5 - Culling Voices, 6- Fear Inoculum. Title track is weak in comparison to the rest of the album tbh.

Danny Carey said that on their latest album, his goal was to think of drumming in a completely open-minded and different way. It totally shows. And he is a drumming god like you said. Trying to play some of his more polyrhythmic parts will cause a brain shutdown. Great video!

I’d respectfully argue that Danny isn’t really trying to throw the audience. He’s just playing a dotted 8th based ostinado, which is the basis of the main riff of the song. The whole riff is just 8 dotted 8th notes, then 4 8th notes. It may feel a little weird because those 8 dotted 8ths go over the bar line but that’s really all it is. But yeah, DC is an absolute beast of a drummer. It probably comes from those Laker jerseys he always wears 😜

I personally believe Danny Carey is the most methodical & technical drummer/percussionist in music. At least that I personally listen to. I'm sure there's others but certainly none with his style & flare! 🤘🏼💙🤘🏼
It is also possible to group the beat as 2 + 3 + 3 (the bass hints it on the second measure of the second verse) which eventually converges to 1 + 1.5 + 1.5 - because of the half-note subdivisions (the 8ths), which equals to 4. In fact, there are obscure "duplets" that start with the upbeat, actually yielding those dotted 8ths - and as polyrhythmic progression goes, the quantity of duplets really doesn't matter but their arrangement between the beats. Another 10000 Days song "Vicarious" features a similar arrangement after the second chorus - i hope Elizabeth reviews that masterpiece, too.
Also, Tool's sound needs some getting used to - however, listen them enough, you won't even be paying that much attention to those tricks - "Tool being Tool again" would be your usual reaction :)
It’s very hard to “casually” listen to Tool. Their songs are very long and complex, after all, and they’re not exactly “easy listening.” I personally didn’t truly appreciate their talent until I immersed myself in their music and really listened - multiple times. They grew on me and I love them now.

I have listened to them since I was about 7, my brother who is 11 years old then me listened to them a lot when I was younger. I only listened to about 12 of their songs growing up. But about 2 years ago I decided to add all their songs into a single playlist. I listened to every song not just the ones I knew. Man I fell deep into the spiral. I am happy I did since it has gotten me through a toxic breakup.
I think that's the case for most people who don't appreciate Tools music and don't understand the fanatic fanbase. If a person isn't interested in being completely immersed in music or perhaps finds vulnerability threatening at that point in their life than their approach to music can be a complete turn off. Because their talent is obvious, but what they require of the listener could be considered "asking too much" for some people. Completely understandable. I like to think people who don't like Tool just aren't in the right headspace for it, but one day could be. :)

Tool is so good, they have ruined 95% of all other music for me. I just feel “left for wanting” with pretty much everything else I listen to now. Not that it’s a bad thing though, they’re just that good IMO.
Love the channel, love the analysis - the technical breakdown that allows me to appreciate later what is pointed out. All 4 members of the band are extraordinary at their craft, and The Pot features each amazingly. I echo many of the other comments about each musician sharing the stage, and though Maynard’s singing, Danny’s drumming, and Adam’s articulation is phenomenal....to me, this track is about Justin - incredible playing throughout - what a Rock bass should sound like IMO, and then two solos in this track. My favorite bass player in any genre.

While this song is about drug use it is not really about marijuana. "The Pot" is referring to the pot calling the kettle black. People don't usually get this worked up over weed.

I missed out on a lot of classic bands, but I cannot help but think about how fortunate I am to have been alive as TOOL has progressed through their career. Their music is never going to age, and I feel they are the classical music of our time--people will be listening to them 100 years from now and still finding things about which to be amazed. And yes, I was thinking about how good his H's were after you pointed it out. Love your analysis, and I especially love that you picked a studio recording to be able to hear everything the band puts in these songs. You could do an entire channel on TOOL and people would flock to it!

That distorted solo part you're talking about in the breakdown is bass. Justin Chancellor is awesome with the whammy pedal.

They have a song called Judith that I think you would appreciate having listened to 10k days and wings for marie. So many little details of how the vocals and instruments compliment each other in this song, one of my favorite is at 25:48. Maynard sings "difference" which ends on that tsss sound...and the moment he lands on that, Danny hits a cymbal producing and amplifying a similar sound! Its such a intertwined way for a vocal sound to become instrumentation. WHenver you do go back to Tool, another track of theirs that really exemplifies what Maynard can do with his vocals is Ticks & Leeches.

I recommend Anesthetize live by Porcupine Tree. One of the greatest live performances ever with one of the best drummers ever, Gavin Harrison. Super melodic, complex and precise drumming while still remaining super tasteful. And the lead songwriter for Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson, has many ties to famous Prog bands you’ve already enjoyed like Opeth and Dream Theater.
