South Africa's last white president issues posthumous apology for pain of apartheid

- The former South African president FW de Klerk recorded a message to the nation shortly before his death on Thursday, in which he apologised for 'the pain and the hurt and the indignity and the damage' the apartheid regime had caused. De Klerk oversaw the end of white minority rule as the country's last apartheid president and shared the Nobel peace prize with Nelson Mandela, but was a controversial figure in the country. Many blamed him for violence against Black South Africans and anti-apartheid activists during his time in power

America was never against apartheid. They labeled Nelson Mandela as a terrorist.
You mean Gibson Makanda, the real Nelson Mandela died in prison. The one that came out of prison was a freemason.
Some did, some didn't. Throughout the 60s and 70s many in the state department and the CIA, etc. supported the ANC in various ways. Of course when it came to Angola/Border War US gave covert support support to apartheid SA but otherwise the cold war was more complicated than you think.
@@aryanrasconspiracy theories!!! Hai mm 😅😂🤔
Mandela was a terrorist
The Americans, under direction of Henry Kissinger, were literally the ones giving the stick to the Crown and SA to end Apartheid.
People need to stop acting like De Klerk was the one who created apartheid. He found it there and did his best to end it, no one is saying he was a saint. But don’t try to act like he was sorely responsible for apartheid.
De Klerk gave orders to some of the brutal killers in apartheid SA he also tried to undermine the democratic election with his by support for Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi
De Klerk was one of the biggest supporters of Apartheid before he had no choice but to abolish it when he became cornered.

As a South African whose family and countrymen suffered during Apartheid this bring tears to my eyes. I have mixed feelings.
My dear brother, this man is not sincere and knows what he is doing. He only wants to save those who will survive him. What they did to non white SAs is despicable. Yes, you need to put that burden aside to salvage your sanity and move forward. It is necessary. However, having decided to go foward does not imply that you have pardoned their crimes or forgotten. Certainly, here's a more detailed summary in English:
South Africa's last white president has issued posthumous apologies for the sufferings caused by apartheid. This statement comes in a complex historical context as South Africa grapples with its past marked by systematic racial discrimination. The president acknowledges the harm caused by apartheid policies that were in place for decades, separating communities and perpetuating blatant injustices.
Apartheid, an institutionalized system of racial segregation, was abolished in the 1990s with the advent of democracy in South Africa. However, the deep scars left by this period still persist today. The posthumous apologies from the last white president emphasize the need for national reconciliation and mutual understanding among different South African communities.
Although coming from a political figure of the past, this gesture is considered by many as an important step towards healing the divisions inherited from apartheid. It also sparks discussions on collective and individual responsibility in building a united and egalitarian South African nation. Ultimately, these posthumous apologies serve as a starting point for profound reflection on the path toward a more inclusive and equitable South African society.
Contrition is an event that comes to the soul of a fortunate person at a tragic moment in their lives. I commend a man who gives in to the beckoning of his better nature under the gaze of the death angel to render an apology that is useful to the appeasing of their spirit. This apology is does that and nothing more... Black people are still living with the trauma and tragedy of a well planned scheme that has left us generationally disenfranchised even in post-apartheid SA. Apologies are always accepted even when they are 5c contribution to an insurmountable debt. The best apology is restitution, eg: giving back the land.
No it is not. Forgive and share the land is better. The White South Africans have a right to stay in SA.
I agree that land which was directly taken from black populations should be given back. On top of that, to ensure that a food shortage does not follow, proper training should be given to the new owners so they might make a success out of farming.
But the land the boere legally bought from the black tribes, the land that was uninhabited at the time and the land legally bought AFTER the end of the Apartheid regime and start of democracy, should not be touched, and should be left as is.
Wealth will never be redistributed by the government. That money would never reach the millions of poor black South Africans, it would only enrich the corrupt politicians more.
If the white community (those who have wealth, as most don't) were to be taxed at a higher rate, that money could directly be given to housing initiatives to provide housing and fast-track the solution to the housing crisis.
I wonder who will apologize for all the evil, corruption and crime we experience today.
That’s the legacy of apartheid.
