    This is amazing. My last child was born via c-section, and it’s becoming harder and harder to find underwear that comes up high enough to not slide down into that scar but also doesn’t show over the top of my pants.

      Absolutely! The underwear likes to slide down into the scar!
      35 year ago was my C-section, & it's still is bothersome!

    Also, thanks for accounting for stretch factor rather than just lopping off some standard measurement to account for "negative ease". I love the attention to detail.

    I am absolutely STUNNED at how much I am learning watching this video. You are a phenomenal teacher. This is one of the first times that I am actually excited about making a garment. Usually I think the clothes I make are going to work out and then I am so disappointed. Knickers seems the perfect first place to learn about pattern drafting, plus I will get some underwear that fit well and are actually good for my lady bits! Thanks for taking so much time to explain why tests are so important and that it is decidedly NOT a waste of time or fabric. I can't wait to get started!

    I've tried to make knickers before. The first pair fit almost perfect and I used that pattern with different fabric, which had a different stretch factor, so the new pair didn't fit! I will make a pattern from scratch from now with your help and keep in mind the stretch factor. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

    That mysterious stretch factor! And you explained it so casually that I'm now wondering what all the fuss is about. Athough perhaps when I actually try to use it... I'm constantly frustrated by both what we call underwear and what we call lingerie, bc niether of those options is ever comfortable. I see a brighter future where I'm not arguing with my gusset and I can design the underwear that will make my clothes happier! Thank you!

    I don't do the math anymore.. It's just too much effort. I live in Europe, we use cm. But The most tutorials on yt come from the states, or let's say the America's. And it's way easier just to buy yourself a measure tape wit both. Metric on one side, inch on the other side. Done😎✅

      You might consider looking into merino wool as a natural fiber alternative to nylon. Merino is very moisture wicking, and even when I’m exercising I feel dry all day rather than clammy and wet like I usually would with cotton.
      The issue with clothing made from synthetic fibers like nylon is the potential for it to react with the body in a negative way over the long term. These petrochemicals have been shown to have negative effects on hormonal balance and more. I wouldn’t advise wearing it so close to a delicate area.

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience! I sometimes struggle with finding underwear that fits. As my body has changed shape, what used to fit well now digs in around the legs to the point of actually leaving marks. I haven't worn that style in a long time. I notice that this girth around the leg isn't included, I presume because you can alter the height of the cut at the hips.
    I've been finding and saving patterns for swimwear and sports tops so I can design my own sport sets. Would you say that stretch factor is important for the gusset when designing gear for people doing flexibility moves? Lip slips aren't wanted!

    • @arkdefo
      @arkdefo  5 місяців тому +2

      thanks for this! yes, when you design the pattern you decide how high/low you want the leg to sit. You just regulate it. To avoid lip slip, don't add stretch factor to the crotch, as it doesn't stretch, it just sits. Just make sure the elastic is tight enough instead.

    Thank you. Long legged panties are very expensive in contrast to ‘regular ‘panties. When you sit at a computer for hours on end, that elastic around the top of your thigh makes your body ache. I’m going to make some long legged panties. Not fair that these are all the rage for men’s boxers but as usual, women are discriminated against.

    How big is the sketch book you used for the pattern drafting?

    So I tried this today. Bought 100,,% cotton jersey. Stretch test, 10 turned into 12. The pattern sits very loose. And the fabric does not recovery from being stretched, it just stay bigger so the undies are even more loose. Did I pick a bad quality fabric or is this normal for 100% cotton. I enjoyed the process so thanks for the video very very much😊

      you could try increasing the stretch factor and double check your measurements. Also, the fit adjusts once you add the elastic. Also, you may want to add a dart for a tighter fit 🙂

      With 100% cotton the snugness mostly comes from the elastics. Those will also vary greatly. I tend to make a test pair with what I've bought, to see how tight everything needs to be - the feel for the hand and elasticity comes to you after a while. The same pattern from different fabric can be dramatically a different size, so it's always mock-up time with a new fabric or elastic.
