Enjoy this new tutorial! I'll be starting on the next episode after the holidays, so if you'd like to see a particular show or film broken down next, leave a reply here! Happy holidays everyone!
Avery Peck Amazing work, subbed and I'm going through your videos. One little thing, with headphones on the background music was a bit repetitive and distracting when I was trying to focus on what you were saying. Looking forward to your next video!
I would have to second Blade Runner and the Social Network if possible? I know other videos have been done on them, but again, your eye and explanations are just right on! Thanks for doing what you do!
Appreciate the fact that you took the process from camera, lens, lighting and colour palette in front of the camera through to grading. Really well done.
As someone who is into filmmaking and someone who was on the set of the screenshot you used outside... you nailed it. They do everything you did, just with larger equipment. PEOPLE, you don't NEED expensive equipment to get beautiful visuals. It just takes more work with a smaller crew or for yourself. That's the only main difference other than more dynamic range.
This was excellent. The advanced grading tutorial combined with the fact that you shot the scenes, all delivered in a clear way shows you know your stuff. I wonder how you've grown in the last 2 years. A lot I imagine!
I'm happy you commented on this Caleb. I have learned a ton on your channel. Avery, this is amazing stuff, and a reason that true-to-the-bone free education is flourishing in many different niche communities. Great to see channels synergizing!
I love the shoot and grade idea. Hardly anyone on UA-cam shows the whole process. You’re totally right about grading your own footage to match a grade you saw online - doesn’t work unless you shot it to match the footage too.
Hey Avery! After 14 hours of DaVinci course I watched couple of your videos on colour grading. That gave me way bigger understanding of practical colour grading. Watched this video already 3 times and I open something new every time. Keep on doing it!
Wow this is one of the best tutorials I've seen on UA-cam. Perfectly concise, you actually talked about shooting it, and so easy to understand and follow! Definitely subbed.
Watched 2-3 videos and so far, I like how consistent you are in your approach. Particularly your skin tone workflow with the scope and circle mask. Great stuff man, keep making these I love it.
Just wanted to say that it's really awesome that you're doing this series. It's really cool to see someone demystify the different color pallets used in different films and projects. Keep up the good work.
Super impressed by this. Definitely one of the greatest UA-cam cinematography/grading tutorials I've seen in a while. I definitely have to get better at Resolve. Keep up the good work!
Best DR color videos I have seen. I am learning a lot. I like when you show 2 or 3 versions on the same shot. I like the styled looks but also want to learn more about clean grades that might fit basic commercial work. Great job, keep it going!
Sir, you make the best color grading instructionals on UA-cam by far. Thank you so much for sharing these. Beautiful shots and edits as well, you have an incredible eye.
hey Avery, american tutorial makers usually are oversellous and try to be overly cool and funny. But i think you nailed it bro!!! You have a comfortable coolness just enough to make your tuts interesting from beginning to end! keep up the good work, i love your tuts!
Great tutorial... The two people on UA-cam who really are the best at this stuff are you and Juan Melara, please keep the grading tutorials coming... I wish you could make a tutorial with GH5 log-footage (for us poor blokes who can´t afford high end cameras) and provide tips on workflow, settings and Resolve tweaks for getting closer to this look despite a narrower dynamic range...
This was a fantastic tutorial, and thank you for recognizing the role of wardrobe and production design in the look of a scene. A lot of cinematography/grading tutorials never address that. Loving your videos!
BROOOOOO! Where is your master class? I would pay for classes from you. Concise and straight to the point! I literally avoided Davinci since version 12 but now I'm so excited to learn more just from this one vid! Truly this is what UA-cam was made for📈
you are an excellent teacher. I've watched so many color grade tutorials, you beat them all. Wishing you great success ahead & hoping that your channel grows :)
I just shot a micro film yesterday using the BlackMagic URSA Mini 4.6k for my first time and I'm so pumped that I have these tutorials to reference when it comes time to grade them tomorrow! You seriously rock man!
OMG,this is AWESOME! it's just the first video I've ever watched on your channel and I'm already a big fan! this is what I look for in a lighting and grading tutorial! tysm, Avery!
Thank you SO MUCH, for not being one of those "Grading Tutorials" where all they do is apply a Luts and skip all of the important color decisions, and basically explain things with zero fundament, great material, suscribed.
You are so talented. I'm trying to find color grading on UA-cam that isn't all freaking orange and teal, and I love Stranger Things. This is such a good start for a newb to Resolve and color grading.
Thank you very much for your tutorials! I learn so much. I am about to shoot a movie with the kids and want to look it at least some kind of "good". Your tuts will surely help me achieving that.
Wow. Your attention to detail and explanation is really on point. I appreciate your thorough description of each step of your process. This is not only very inspiring, but very informative and a purposeful resource. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I am really looking forward to more of what you share. You are sharing this at a great time for me in my career as I explore more in-depth color-grade and "on-set" lighting styles. This is fantastic. Thank you thank you!
Thank you Avery Peck! Your tutorials, this one and the skin tutorial have been very helpful. Skin tones have been a mystery to me, you've done a fine job explaining how to approach the skin using midtones, highlights and shadows and how they interact. You have also made me a big fan of Resolve which because of your tutorials I ended up purchased the full version switching away from Premiere Pro for grading. Glad I found your channel and look forward to your next offering.
Your channel is amazing! I watch as much as I can learning about resolve and I can honestly say I like your videos the absolute best. Please keep them coming. Your awesome
Avery, I just found your channel and I'm really glad I did! You have a fantastic way of explaining things and I'm excited to see more of your work! Also, I didn't realize the greens in the show were that under saturated and muted, great eye!
WOW!! You definitely just got a sub that's officially about to become apart of the notification gang! Thanks for what you're doing. We really appreciate it man.
You're welcome. You said at the end of the video to let you know what other videos to do. Not that you asked for my opinion but mine would be to keep doing videos just like this (different popular shows and films) and keep this same format/style you did in this video for every series. Not only am I sure that we all will greatly appreciate it but I'm sure you'll gain a ton of views and waaaay more subs. But who am I (nobody lol). Just a thought. Again, thanks for EVERYTHING you do man. You are the man!!!!!
@@OKLAHOMALOVE2 Agree, I love these look breakdowns! I wish I just had lighting equipment to do it myself😂 but the color grade is awesome and I love doing it!
This is my new favorite channel. I've been avoiding trying Davinci as premiere just feels more convenient for vlog editing, but after watching this, it seems so much more powerful so I should probably give it a try.
Thanks Connor! It'll probably feel like a lot of work at first, but I can promise you the results will be worth it! Resolve is a far better tool for coloring than Premiere once you get a handle on the process.
Thank you for the video. It is one of the best tutorial video on the internet. The amount of details you have mentioned without wasting time. To the point, precise and informative.
Tu fais vraiment du super boulot. Si seulement tu habitais à Paris je prendrais des cours particuliers tout de suite avec toi. Merci et bravo pour ta super pédagogie et ta rigueur.
great tutorial! thanks for being so detailed especially with the tools, cuz so many just assume everyone's good with it by defaul, and focus more on the look development... can you do a tutorial on basic grading, like what to look at when you start correcting colors, make sure you re not crashing blacks/whites, get rig of tints, balance temperate, etc, and what tools are most commonly used in this process? thanks again!
Great tutorial Avery. I have a suggestion for a tutorial. These colour/grading tutorials are always great to get the basics of a very controlled scene. For example you're masking off stuff grading different parts of the scene and isolating elements which is a great, BUT, what about when the actor isn't just sitting or standing still. What about when there's a lot of dynamic movement in the shot. Two or three or more actors moving across the frame criss-crossing in front of each other etc, How about this same tutorial again but with that 'complex' dynamic movement. That would be great.
Excellent video, Avery. Your approach is unique and illuminating. Definitely at the top of my list for Davinci instructors. One topic I hope you'll one day cover is how to obtain maximum sharpness. I always feel my videos are too soft, regardless of which lens and camera I use. I'll use some of the available sharpening tools, but it still never looks quite right. Your sage advice would be awesome.
Awesome - love that you show the lighting set-up! Could I suggest Breaking Bad as a grade?
Mad Max and blade runner please. Your tutorial is amazing.
I would have to second Blade Runner and the Social Network if possible? I know other videos have been done on them, but again, your eye and explanations are just right on! Thanks for doing what you do!
Which software you use ?
Appreciate the fact that you took the process from camera, lens, lighting and colour palette in front of the camera through to grading. Really well done.
Yeah I agree, the detail in creating the shot is awsome! I'd love to see him break down more shots from different movies!
This video really gave me a deeper understanding of colors and the color grading process. Well done!
Yeah, it's really detailed, definitely learned a new look from this.
Brother you are a goat come back and fire the world with your knowledge
This was excellent. The advanced grading tutorial combined with the fact that you shot the scenes, all delivered in a clear way shows you know your stuff. I wonder how you've grown in the last 2 years. A lot I imagine!
Brilliant job Avery. Really solid stuff here!
Thank you Caleb!
Yes, I AM in the right place. What Caleb said.
Beginner here. This just opened my eyes to how powerful the tools in Da Vinci Resolve are. Thank You! this is great.
Even years after uploading this video remains, hands down, one of the best regarding grading and skintones! Thanks a lot!
Hey Avery! After 14 hours of DaVinci course I watched couple of your videos on colour grading. That gave me way bigger understanding of practical colour grading. Watched this video already 3 times and I open something new every time. Keep on doing it!
Thanks Max! Glad you've found them so useful!
This is so spot on! I love that soft light. You are making me really want to learn Resolve. Amazing how much control you can have over the image.
Thank you! You absolutely should; it can be a powerful tool alongside your cinematography.
Wow this is one of the best tutorials I've seen on UA-cam. Perfectly concise, you actually talked about shooting it, and so easy to understand and follow! Definitely subbed.

Just wanted to say that it's really awesome that you're doing this series. It's really cool to see someone demystify the different color pallets used in different films and projects. Keep up the good work.
This is actually the first grading tutorial on youtube I found that is good. More basic tutorials for grading are welcome too! Keep 'em coming.
I dont even work in filmmaking, but I find these type of videos so interesting. Cool work
You are awesome!! Can't wait to see more looks from different shows and movies :) Also showing different lighting techniques and camera tricks!
But why did you stop making videos? You're so great man Come back if you're still there
Great tutorial for beginner cinematographer's and colourists; simple steps and effective results!
You have some of the best tuts on UA-cam. Excellent edits, non-annoying voice, right to the point, well explained. Keep it up man.
Yeah, his voice is nice to listen to, unlike mine😬
Sir, you make the best color grading instructionals on UA-cam by far. Thank you so much for sharing these. Beautiful shots and edits as well, you have an incredible eye.
Thank you Daniel!
Easily one of the best tutorials on this topic. Really hope you make more!
Young man, you are doing a fantastic job. Keel it up. I did about 300 tutorial videos on the RED camera, so I know how much work these are.
hey Avery, american tutorial makers usually are oversellous and try to be overly cool and funny. But i think you nailed it bro!!! You have a comfortable coolness just enough to make your tuts interesting from beginning to end! keep up the good work, i love your tuts!

Dude, best color grading channel I’ve come across!
Wow you explained everything so clearly from the lighting, separation, and color grade!
This was a fantastic tutorial, and thank you for recognizing the role of wardrobe and production design in the look of a scene. A lot of cinematography/grading tutorials never address that. Loving your videos!
Wow. One of the best tutorials I have ever seen.
Can you please make the same tutorial but in After effects ? How do I do this in After effects ?
This is the first time I've actually been thoroughly impressed by a color grading tutorial. Great work mate!
Hey Avery, Please please come back and make more tutorials. Best I've seen! 👌
Your tutorial’s are on point, their so informative, the best I’ve seen so far
Love the way you explain color grading and looks creation. Keep on!
BROOOOOO! Where is your master class? I would pay for classes from you. Concise and straight to the point! I literally avoided Davinci since version 12 but now I'm so excited to learn more just from this one vid! Truly this is what UA-cam was made for📈
Please make more videos man! You are amazing at explaining color grading step by step.
great tutorial! I have to watch the video a few times per week until I learn everything by heart
Incredible!!!! You made the BMCC 2.5k footage look like it was shot on a RED!
you are an excellent teacher.
Holy shit bro. This is next level grading. Wow. I was going to buy film convert, but damn this shows me the power already in resolve
Lovely tutorial!

Amazing tutorial. I love that you went the extra mile and showed how to actually light a scene like Stranger Things.
what a great tut, was gripped from beginning to end
Thank you very much for your tutorials! I learn so much. I am about to shoot a movie with the kids and want to look it at least some kind of "good". Your tuts will surely help me achieving that.
Really great use of using the sun to light the entirety of the first shot!
This is the best video on color correction i have seen so far!
Watched it 3 times and still getting great insight. Thank you so much man, great work!
Please show us how to do this in After effects
Now I finally found real colorist channel. Thank you so much it saved me tons of time!!!

You my friend, are hired. I don’t know what project I have filming next but you got the gig.
What projects do you do?
Great Video! I am just learning DaVinci Resolve for my production company. It seems very complex but you make it seem easy. Thank You !
Very nice! Love your Tutorials! Thanks a lot!
Cant thank you enough for your effort into creating this tutorial! Very easy to follow and your workflow is fantastic.
Sickest Davinci color grading tutorial I’ve seen so far.
Awesome explanation and tutorial

Great tutorial. You really helped explain a few things I hadn't figured out yet. Appreciate your work.
Nicely done. Thanks for sharing.
I am pretty sure your channel will explote any day ! Excellent UA-camr!
Thank you!
Thanks Bro. I love the new concept in your videos.
Hey! Is it possible you can link the filter / matte box used? Thanks!
Nice tutorial, nice pacing, nice guy. Good job man.
this is one of the best tutorials I've seen lately, congrats!
Tu fais vraiment du super boulot. Si seulement tu habitais à Paris je prendrais des cours particuliers tout de suite avec toi.
Merci et bravo pour ta super pédagogie et ta rigueur.
Merci mon ami!
This is my first in depth davinci resolve tutorial :O this is really inspiring me to start grading my footage.
This channel is a real gem
