- Independent MP Zali Steggall and Nationals Senate Leader Bridget McKenzie have clashed over whether Australia should adopt nuclear power, with Steggall calling McKenzie’s arguments “rubbish”.
Opposition Energy Spokesman Ted O’Brien has said if Australia was open to nuclear, Liddell could be used to install four 300-megawatt small modular reactors or one 1.1 gigawatts larger reactor.
“Complete unicorn and just absolute make-believe that Bridget and the Coalition are in,” Ms Stegall told Sky News Australia.
“We have to transition to modern-day technology, and for Australia, it is simply not nuclear, and the Coalition seem unable to acknowledge that.
“They simply are trying to delay the transition to renewable, which must occur between now and 2035.”
Perhaps, the good voters who elected Steggall to parliament can now see the folly of that decision.
Compared to Abbott Zali is very sane. No the bigots like Abbott who defended the paedo George Pell and thought sending refugees to Rwanda was good for Britain? Stop the reactionary bullshit. Good on Greens and Independents.

It's impossible. Some form of fossil fuel will always need to be used. And what people don't relises, if you don't use oil and coal, it eventually turns into methane gas over time and will work its way up to the surface, releasing dangerous leval of gas into the atmosphere. That's far more dangerous than a high level of carbon dioxide that may only increase the temperature by 2 degrees. But high levels of methane. Will cause mass extinction including kill of plant life. What they should be doing is finding a way to filter fossil fuels so it don't cause pollution instead of abolishing it that will only cause a major problem for the world later on

Unreliable (renewable energy) is going to cost Trillions. It’s only at peak for 25-30% of a day. Nuclear is 24/7. So cost per hour will be less.
The total installed capacity of solar is never available. 100% cost for at the very best 50% capacity.

@@trevorjohnston9504 Early electric cars were terrible. Battery was probably lead-acid and extremely heavy, and didn't last very long. But we've had small electric cars for a very long time - those golf-carts were all electric, not to mention mobility scooters. Diesel and petrol versions of those are really not workable given the places they are expected to operate.
Modern electric cars are quite good; fun to drive if you can put up with the inconveniences that come with them. Taking 8 hours to fill them up isn't going to be fun... Although you can make them usable in about 1 hour, depending.
In the end, everyone should simply drive the car that best suits their circumstances. I don't believe EVs will "save the planet". It's just good to have some extra choices. Horses for courses, I guess.
Who would talk to any politician about getting their car fixed but we're all mandated to do as they say on energy.

With nuclear, we would be no loss of ariable farmland, no co2 emissions from construction of wind turbines and solar panels, and no need for more power lines, as nuclear power stations could operate from the sites of the old coal power stations, plus no ongoing expense and co2 emissions from the replacement of wind turbines and solar panels. Let’s be honest. The 2018 Ipcc summary on historical effects of climate change on civilization states that the Roman Optimum period was 2 deg C warmer than current temperature ie 3.5 deg C warmer than 1880, the sea level did not rise , the ice caps did not melt and the abundance of food meant humanity flourished. The little ice age, were government wants to take us back to, caused 10% of the world’s population to starve to death.

Of course Zali is factually incorrect about nuclear, costings etc, as well as refusing to acknowledge that renewables will not meet 2035 and 2050 targets but I'm also disappointed with Bridget's responses regarding nuclear.
Bridget should have been honest and said that LNP are hoping to bring nuclear on the agenda but they are still in a process of determining details as to its viability.
Her answer should have been, we are bringing nuclear to the table and the LNP believes it is in the interest of our nation that our country stops the ban and simply considers its viability as a genuine option.
After watching this program, it is clear to me that Zali has no idea about what she is spruking, surely we can do better than this???

Speaking as an engineer that understands power generation and distribution I can say that Zali girl is delusional to think solar and wind is going to cut it. There is not a country in the world that thinks solar and wind will power their country. Zali says coal and gas are fading out, why then are the exports and consumption of coal and gas worldwide increasing. They are increasing because they can provide reliable cheap base load power. Wind and solar cannot provide base load power and never will.
Labor refuses to acknowledge the reality of whats happening. Is this who you want to run the country?

Ms. McKenzie - If the transmission lines between the generator and the end user are broken the power isn’t going to flow regardless of the generation method - fossil fuel, nuclear or renewables.

We have some of the world's largest deposits of uranium and are not using it to our advantage.
Coal is our second largest export plus our primary base load power supply, and if we are going to stop using it, what better thing to do but use our uranium.
Nuclear power has come along way since the 50's and 60's.
It should be on the table in any discussion involving future power supply, particularly if we are to achieve nett zero and maintain reliable power.
Renewables are great but cannot do it without a base load power system.
