I used a Blue Yeti for years, and when I upgraded to a real XLR mic, I realized just how tin-ny and thin the Yeti sounded. Doesn't surprise me how much hiss it has. Always had a hiss with mine. Thanks for the vid, Mike!
resell it, you'll get quite a bit of its initial price back, since they are still the default streamer mic, and also someone else will put it to good use; just a shame to leave it collecting dust
I was thinking about it, and did you try connecting both XLR ports to your interface? It could have been hissing since it was underpowered and that's why you had to run and increase the gain on your interface, and why there was so much hiss. I had a lot of hiss on the Blue Encore 200 before I realized it was an active dynamic and required phantom power. May be worth a shot.
Podcastage I reckon this is the first video of a series. He will probably upload a follow-up showing a solution, similar to what he did when his E100s had a hiss. At least, the title suggests something like that: "USB mic week".
Also it would worth a shot to turn up the gain on the mic, and down on the preamp. It certainly won't erase all the hiss, but as I've been hearing it the hiss stayed the exact same sound level as the gain was adjusted on the mic but definitely got boosted as the preamp was adjusted. Probably the mic gives a passive hint of hiss (I know, it shouldn't) that the preamp picks up and amplifies.

Could it be a serious of QR issues? Maybe. It could also be incompatibility with certain other audio equipment or digital interfaces. So no, it is not "obviously" a singularly defective microphone. 2 - is it his fault, or somehow the video's fault that it is making the hiss? Nope. Is he trying to be objective in his critique? Yes. Does he praise what he feels deserves praise? Yep. It is a review done to the best of his ability with the resources available? Yep. So again, HIS VIDEO, not the microphone, is done well. Blaming him or downvoting the video simply because the microphone does not perform as expected is the same thing as shooting the messenger. He even acknowledged that it could be a defective one. But even if that is the case, that does reflect a possible shortcoming in the QR process, or production process of the BlueYeti Pro, which IS ABSOLUTELY relevant when making a choice when buying anything. If there is a trend of defective products, consumers are less likely to buy that product. So yes, this is a relevant and useful review.
Started using my Yeti Pro with a XLR cable when I saw the video and got no hissing and my mixer's EQ helped with the 'tinniness' of the audio. I suggest a follow up video looking into the issues you encountered so no one goes away thinking this microphone is 'crappy'.
I have a Yeti with the table mount. It's great on the full circle setting for a round-table style podcast we run. And, yes, that desk mount is a sound transmitter. A highly experienced gave me a great tip for keeping the desk mount (easy center of table placement) and DRAMATICALLY reducing the sound transmission of table taps, bumps, knocks, etc... Simply set it on a couple layers of 1/2" diameter bubble wrap and turn the gain all the way down. It makes a huge difference when using the desk mount. It doesn't eliminate all table noise, but it makes a significant difference.
As many comments here I was also caught in the Blue Yeti fever that spread over UA-cam some years ago, but this is by far the best review. I'm so used to your voice that I can tell right away that for the price you can get better mics, still looking for an upgrade but not sure yet. I gotta get it right this time :D
I'm curious how it would have sounded with the pre-amp turned down and the gain turned up, because playing with the gain knob in XLR mode did seem to make a difference in volume. That's weird though, I've gotten less noise on $50 dynamic microphones through XLR... I also wonder if it could have been the 5 pin XLR splitting cable that had something to do with it.
I have a normal Blue Yeti that I keep next to a DDR Arcade machine stream setup. DESPERATELY needed a shock mount, but fortunately there are many cheaper shock mounts than the Radius, and I do mean MUCH cheaper. The Yeti is actually stuck onto a camera tripod through a screw adapter and it words well for the setup.
I have this mic and experienced the same hiss problem. I was advised by another booth Junkie subscriber to open a case with Blue Microphones and send it in. Thank God I saved my receipt from B&H. I opened the warranty cased with Blue and shipped them the microphone. It's been two and half weeks at this time and will let you guys know if I got a brand new replacement or the same bad one.
I've used the Yeti Pro and didn't experience any of the hiss apparent in your video when connected via XLR (mono). Could be a faulty dongle or damaged mic? I also didn't experience the clipping or distortion you show here either. The Yeti Pro wouldn't be my first choice in its price range, but I didn't have any complaints or experience any of the issues seen here when I used it for a short professional project (I also used it with a Zoom H5).
i have this mic. at home i use XLR and a boom arm, on the go i run it via usb and use the included stand. i find the emf and histeresis characteristics of this mic are rather good in my opinion.

As much as I acknowledge that the Blue Yeti Pro is no professional grade mic, and that it should never be anyone’s mic choice if they can afford better easily, I currently use a blue yeti pro and I don’t regret purchasing it. I started voice over for very cheap through fiverr just to get a feel for it without spending tons on solid equipment, and as I really grew into the work and wanted to improve and branch out to try auditioning for some indie games and what have you online, I simply purchased an audio interface and preamp to use with the mic (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, DBX 286s). The mic on USB sounded pretty muddy, but I find now that the interface and preamp, which I can use indefinitely, make a great difference in quality and I feel comfortable seeking out semi-professional work. I definitely plan on upgrading my mic soon, but there’s something to be said for how useful the hybrid nature of the yeti pro is as a USB and XLR mic. And yeah. The radius is a fatso shock mount.

I have the yeti pro and run it through XLR to a preamp its its silent and has great sound. I use the XLR splitter and connect that to another adaptor that takes it to a single 3 cord, may be that unconnected side of the cable is creating a grounding issue.
I've owned the Yeti Pro for 4 years and produced 60+ podcast 1hr episodes, and a bunch of live webcasts so far, and have never experienced that much hiss. It is no CAD E100 (I've one on its way home as of right now), but nevertheless it isn't a noisy piece of junk. I've never used it as a USB mic, so I don't know if it actually sounds better that way. That said, I always plug both XLR ends to my interface or mixing console (even though I only use it as a cardiod) and set the gain on the mic to 1/4 of the way so that I don't need that much gain from the preamps on the mixer or interface. It's always yielded me a pretty decent signal with VERY little hiss. I'm just now learning that the controls on the mic are supposed to stop working when connected via XLR, but that has never been the case with mine. Mute and gain buttons work every single time.
wow surprise by the hiss on the XLR side with Blue Yeti Pro that is crazy like you pointed out you would think USB would have the hiss it must have some thing to do with that 5pin XLR Y cable hey I should send you my Studio Project LSM mic which is also XLR (mini ) and USB I never used the USB connection

I used to have an SE Electronics USB2200a which was both USB and XLR. Was quite a nice microphone I thought. Not sure if it's still available. Never been tempted by Blue microphones for some reason.
why is he not reviewing the yeti black out usb mic and by the way linus tech did a review of the blackout mic and linus never mentions any hissing noise
Mike, did you try to connect an xlr to both sides of the stereo xlr adapter? Could potentially having an open ended cable out be introducing extra hiss the same as listening to a preamp with nothing plugged into it?
Is it supposed to stay under USB power when using it through XLR? Obvious source of hiss would be an offset between an USB/computer ground versus a preamp's ground. If it is supposed to stay USB powered, I'd try powering it with an USB power bank battery instead of PC.
The Blue Yeti Pro sounds like its clipping over usb but i dont think it is, but you can hear a distinct buzz when you speak into the mic and its a bit unpleasant. For me im not a fan of usb mics, buts its nice that the Yeti pro give you the option to use xlr instead of just usb, since that allows the mic to be used with amps, mixers, or any hardware (rack) that has mic input(xlr), but that hiss is pretty bad over xlr great video none the less.
Hey bro I know this video is 3 years old but I want to buy this mic but I was wondering that when I plug this in my laptop via USB do I have to download a software for it ? I hope you get to keep the Yeti Pro long enough to run a few head to head competitions. Although, with all of that hiss, I'm not sure if it's worth the time.
I use a blue yeti for my UA-cam (this is not my main channel). The Blue yeti is very good price wise but it sensitivity picks up too much unwanted type of of noise and in a lot of detail. I have a few thousand subs and growing and decided I will be buying a proper XLR setup in the summer (rode broadcaster). Doug please do Rode Broadcaster review, its used in many radio stations.
Couldn't it be the stereo dongle? I've had several of similar cable solutions turn out to be a stereo splitter cable, or adapter of some sort. as for the mic. sounds terrible with distortion and hiss. would probably go for a cheap mic and interface combo over this.
Another fun and informative video, thanks. I would have thought for sure you should have left the preamp alone the whole time and just added gain at the mic. You either hit a limiter or got into the red somewhere. What preamp do you use?
I've had them both opened up other the the XLR ciructry there is no difference between the two. Same components for usb section and same capsules. The pro simply adds xlr. Also not that I like the yeti (not a fan) but the one I have has zero hiss at all from xlr maybe something wrong there either with the mic or the chain. The XLR does usually need to be up a bit over the USB but shouldn't hiss like that.
Imo if I had to use a USB mic it would be either the se x1 or the mxl .009 the .009 is a damn good USB mic. That's the one I take with me if I need usb on the go
Can you please do a video on the Rode Procaster? I was thinking of getting one because end address microphones don't cover up my monitor as much(Plus I'm in Australia so rode microphones are fairly cheap).
It may be that dongle that was causing the hiss. I have the yeti pro and it's a pretty nice mic. But i haven't used the xlr port yet. Mainly because I have a shure sm7b now.
I noticed that the audio became unsynced with the video about the time you plugged in the XLR in the Yeti. I blame the Yeti. It's unusable at least as a XLR mic. BUT! When you went back to the USB, the audio and video magically was in sync again. Did you break it by doing a hot plug while the USB was still powering it? Is your buddy going to be mad if you broke it?
Wow, if it came with the set, that's pretty cheap of them. I really don't like Blue Yeti microphones, but regardless, adapters can easily compromise the quality of the signal.

That's no moon! Boy is that huge. I like the idea of usb/xlr, one thing I'm missing on the Rode Podcaster knowing that I'll eventually upgrade. I have a question... what percentages would you weight importance between room acoustics, mic and voice training/quality. I'm looking to improve my own and thinking currently the room is the weak spot, not the other two. I want to sound warm and comforting like you :)
SamadanPlaysWoW Not mike, but I can provide some insights. Vocal quality and audio quality are two completely different beasts. I'm not a fan of the rode podcaster, but if you're not upgrading, room tone wouldn't really matter as much, since the podcaster is a dynamic microphone which isn't affected by room noise as much and isn't as overly sensitive. Usually, once you get a mic that sounds somewhat decent (mics from 100$ on these days can already sound pretty good), room tone will have a much bigger impact on your audio than your mic or preamp will (unless it gives you prominent noise on normal volume levels). You don't need to shell out too much for sound treatment to start off with, however. You can get professional results with a DIY setup if you're smart enough about it. Of course, none of these things matter if you don't have vocal training, but for that you're just going to have to practice. Maybe try and get other people's input on voice acting (or singing if that's your thing) or get a coach to help you. Just my 2 cents

Honestly it's not that bad the price is a bit big but it works very nicely sounds good and atleast to me it does t sound all that tin y and the hiss is probably from some sort of defect mine never hisses and it a very respectable microphone
Standard Yeti Pro:- Start a Zoom meeting, Plug in a set of monitor headphones and turn down the gain until any background hiss disappears. Leave it there and select the Cardio setting. Happy days!! Ref. The standard supplied mount:- sit it on a foam pad.

- I have no idea why you are getting that hiss, I’ve been using mine for years XLR with an Apogee Quartet and I have no hiss at all. I actually use two of them and have never had the his issue you ha in your video.
As an audiophile and youtube gamer, I could not imagine having this monstrosity in front of me and being able to concentrate or even see my monitor entirely. All this space it occupies and that is even before adding a pop filter. Albeit a decent sounding microphone. (The hiss is obviously a problem, but the streamers I've heard use the usb only versions have sounded pretty good.) I like the e100s for the sound first and foremost, and because it's concise and not in the way. Integrated shock + a windtech popguard make it really unobtrusive.
This might be the first mic you've reviewed that I've not liked. Usually, even side-by-side, I can't hear a significant difference. But this one sounds a bit nasally, lacks bass, and seems unclear, like it's not picking up softer sounds.
I have an ATR2100, couldn't you buy like 5 ATR2100's for the price of the Yeti pro? The noise floor is pretty low on the ATR2100 for the price. I've never liked the idea of the yeti because they weigh a ton, meaning you need expensive shock mounts and arms to hold it. The downside of the ATR2100, and pretty much all dynamic microphones is they don't have as wide of a frequency response as condenser microphones, on the plus side, they also don't require phantom power like condenser microphones. The ATR2100 also has a very strong proximity effect. I'm hoping what happened with the Yeti pro in this video is either just a defective mic or something configured wrong, because that is incredibly weird that it had that much hiss.
Ok that damn hiss is annoying. It's in my mic also. I sold my TLM because I needed the money and I wasn't doing any vo work at the time (too busy). It really does tick me off to hear all of that. I got it for lower than low because Blue kind of owed me. I'm looking for a new mic though. Somewhere in the 300 or a little less price range. Maybe I'll just use the MXL 990 that's been collecting dust... USB does sound good in the Yeti Pro though. The highs are just a little wonky. Sigh... Any suggestions anybody? I need a new mic somewhere around 300.
You think that Yeti is bad, try the million time re-branded "BM-800" mic. I have the Floureon BM-800 and I sound like I'm speaking through one of my Arizona Sweet Tea cans. Pre and Post sounds like dog ass. Going for a Audio Technica 2035
oh I thought it was just me, that think's that. I mean 200 and something dollars yeti pro vs 100 at2020, and the 100 sounds better. there is way more better sounding mic at that price range, and yet a lot of you tubers seem to use it.
Pretty much anything is better than the Yeti when you factor in the price of it. Even the Pro which is what's in the video isn't any better than the regular Yeti imo (it has a higher sampling rate which is part of the "pro" aspect, plus the XLR). Buying one would be a big mistake. It's no surprise that a lot of streamers and UA-camrs recommending it listen to their audio with ear buds or gaming headphones (read: garbage). That's the problem with the internet. Anyone can make a review or top 5/10 list of good mics and include something like the Yeti and the Snowball (even if they haven't used anything better). Watching channels like this, Podcastage, or joining recording forums (like Gearslutz or other really active ones) is a much better way to get information on pro audio and what you can get for the price of these glorified toys.
Walaker I have this mic. The gain still works when it’s hooked up. I don’t have this problem but I’m also using both cords for stereo and not just a mono line.
there's something about the Yeti i can't stand. it kind of has this high-pitched buzzy-ness that also tries to inflate the bass a little bit, and it just comes off synthetic in a way..

There's a tiny bit of hiss in my Blue Yeti, but I only recently learnt you just have to have the Gain quite low-ish to stop that.

You're not supposed to use the mic's gain when using the XLR jack, as he stated in the video.
I tried it. The mic's clarity is a bit better, but that hiss doesn't go away.

It will be the stereo XLR breakout cable - I've always found that included cables are usually naff.
No it is not the Yeti Cable. Sounds the same with a Rode NT4? stereo cable and a home made one using CAT 7 cable.

I used to have an SE Electronics USB2200a which was both USB and XLR. Was quite a nice microphone I thought. Not sure if it's still available.

Mike, did you try to connect an xlr to both sides of the stereo xlr adapter? Could potentially having an open ended cable out be introducing extra hiss the same as listening to a preamp with nothing plugged into it?
No, I tried this with a Rolls dual channel pre and the noise is the same.
Is it supposed to stay under USB power when using it through XLR? Obvious source of hiss would be an offset between an USB/computer ground versus a preamp's ground. If it is supposed to stay USB powered, I'd try powering it with an USB power bank battery instead of PC.
The Blue Yeti Pro sounds like its clipping over usb but i dont think it is, but you can hear a distinct buzz when you speak into the mic and its a bit unpleasant. For me im not a fan of usb mics, buts its nice that the Yeti pro give you the option to use xlr instead of just usb, since that allows the mic to be used with amps, mixers, or any hardware (rack) that has mic input(xlr), but that hiss is pretty bad over xlr great video none the less.

I hope you get to keep the Yeti Pro long enough to run a few head to head competitions. Although, with all of that hiss, I'm not sure if it's worth the time.
I use a blue yeti for my UA-cam (this is not my main channel). The Blue yeti is very good price wise but it sensitivity picks up too much unwanted type of of noise and in a lot of detail. I have a few thousand subs and growing and decided I will be buying a proper XLR setup in the summer (rode broadcaster). Doug please do Rode Broadcaster review, its used in many radio stations.

Your shotgun mic sounds WAY better than the yeti on either connection.
Couldn't it be the stereo dongle? I've had several of similar cable solutions turn out to be a stereo splitter cable, or adapter of some sort.

Another fun and informative video, thanks. I would have thought for sure you should have left the preamp alone the whole time and just added gain at the mic. You either hit a limiter or got into the red somewhere. What preamp do you use?
I've had them both opened up other the the XLR ciructry there is no difference between the two. Same components for usb section and same capsules. The pro simply adds xlr. Also not that I like the yeti (not a fan) but the one I have has zero hiss at all from xlr maybe something wrong there either with the mic or the chain. The XLR does usually need to be up a bit over the USB but shouldn't hiss like that.

Imo if I had to use a USB mic it would be either the se x1 or the mxl .009 the .009 is a damn good USB mic. That's the one I take with me if I need usb on the go
Can you please do a video on the Rode Procaster? I was thinking of getting one because end address microphones don't cover up my monitor as much(Plus I'm in Australia so rode microphones are fairly cheap).

I noticed that the audio became unsynced with the video about the time you plugged in the XLR in the Yeti. I blame the Yeti. It's unusable at least as a XLR mic. BUT! When you went back to the USB, the audio and video magically was in sync again. Did you break it by doing a hot plug while the USB was still powering it? Is your buddy going to be mad if you broke it?
Did the shotgun also go through the stereo adapter? If not the problem could be there.

I really don't like Blue Yeti microphones, but regardless, adapters can easily compromise the quality of the signal.

That's no moon! Boy is that huge. I like the idea of usb/xlr, one thing I'm missing on the Rode Podcaster knowing that I'll eventually upgrade. I have a question... what percentages would you weight importance between room acoustics, mic and voice training/quality. I'm looking to improve my own and thinking currently the room is the weak spot, not the other two. I want to sound warm and comforting like you :)

Not mike, but I can provide some insights.
Vocal quality and audio quality are two completely different beasts. I'm not a fan of the rode podcaster, but if you're not upgrading, room tone wouldn't really matter as much, since the podcaster is a dynamic microphone which isn't affected by room noise as much and isn't as overly sensitive.
Usually, once you get a mic that sounds somewhat decent (mics from 100$ on these days can already sound pretty good), room tone will have a much bigger impact on your audio than your mic or preamp will (unless it gives you prominent noise on normal volume levels). You don't need to shell out too much for sound treatment to start off with, however. You can get professional results with a DIY setup if you're smart enough about it.
Of course, none of these things matter if you don't have vocal training, but for that you're just going to have to practice. Maybe try and get other people's input on voice acting (or singing if that's your thing) or get a coach to help you.

Honestly it's not that bad the price is a bit big but it works very nicely sounds good and atleast to me it does t sound all that tin y and the hiss is probably from some sort of defect mine never hisses and it a very respectable microphone

Start a Zoom meeting, Plug in a set of monitor headphones and turn down the gain until any background hiss disappears. Leave it there and select the Cardio setting. Happy days!!

- I have no idea why you are getting that hiss, I’ve been using mine for years XLR with an Apogee Quartet and I have no hiss at all. I actually use two of them and have never had the his issue you ha in your video.

Shame, I loved having the Stereo option when I used my old Yeti, but I'm glad I opted for 2 Rode mics instead of a Yeti Pro
As an audiophile and youtube gamer, I could not imagine having this monstrosity in front of me and being able to concentrate or even see my monitor entirely. All this space it occupies and that is even before adding a pop filter. Albeit a decent sounding microphone. (The hiss is obviously a problem, but the streamers I've heard use the usb only versions have sounded pretty good.) I like the e100s for the sound first and foremost, and because it's concise and not in the way. Integrated shock + a windtech popguard make it really unobtrusive.

This might be the first mic you've reviewed that I've not liked. Usually, even side-by-side, I can't hear a significant difference. But this one sounds a bit nasally, lacks bass, and seems unclear, like it's not picking up softer sounds.

I have an ATR2100, couldn't you buy like 5 ATR2100's for the price of the Yeti pro? The noise floor is pretty low on the ATR2100 for the price. I've never liked the idea of the yeti because they weigh a ton, meaning you need expensive shock mounts and arms to hold it. The downside of the ATR2100, and pretty much all dynamic microphones is they don't have as wide of a frequency response as condenser microphones, on the plus side, they also don't require phantom power like condenser microphones. The ATR2100 also has a very strong proximity effect. I'm hoping what happened with the Yeti pro in this video is either just a defective mic or something configured wrong, because that is incredibly weird that it had that much hiss.

Ok that damn hiss is annoying. It's in my mic also. I sold my TLM because I needed the money and I wasn't doing any vo work at the time (too busy). It really does tick me off to hear all of that. I got it for lower than low because Blue kind of owed me. I'm looking for a new mic though. Somewhere in the 300 or a little less price range.
Maybe I'll just use the MXL 990 that's been collecting dust... USB does sound good in the Yeti Pro though. The highs are just a little wonky. Sigh... Any suggestions anybody? I need a new mic somewhere around 300.

oh I thought it was just me, that think's that. I mean 200 and something dollars yeti pro vs 100 at2020, and the 100 sounds better. there is way more better sounding mic at that price range, and yet a lot of you tubers seem to use it.

Pretty much anything is better than the Yeti when you factor in the price of it. Even the Pro which is what's in the video isn't any better than the regular Yeti imo (it has a higher sampling rate which is part of the "pro" aspect, plus the XLR).
Buying one would be a big mistake. It's no surprise that a lot of streamers and UA-camrs recommending it listen to their audio with ear buds or gaming headphones (read: garbage).
That's the problem with the internet. Anyone can make a review or top 5/10 list of good mics and include something like the Yeti and the Snowball (even if they haven't used anything better). Watching channels like this, Podcastage, or joining recording forums (like Gearslutz or other really active ones) is a much better way to get information on pro audio and what you can get for the price of these glorified toys.

Walaker I have this mic. The gain still works when it’s hooked up. I don’t have this problem but I’m also using both cords for stereo and not just a mono line.

there's something about the Yeti i can't stand. it kind of has this high-pitched buzzy-ness that also tries to inflate the bass a little bit, and it just comes off synthetic in a way..
My impression from this video, is that if you hit it at just the right angle, it sounds good, but at a slightly unfortunate angle, it doesn't.
