On the one hand, it's nice they took care of it for you. On the other hand, it's a shame they only took care of it for you because you have a UA-cam channel with some presence. If you had been a regular consumer, it seems like they would have just ignored you.
Thank you so much for bringing this issue to public, I had the dreaded problem with my e100s like yours. I sent it in and it got repaired and now I am a happy man, Thanks!!!!
Mike, Thank you so much for putting out these videos and for introducing me to this microphone. I was looking for a microphone for podcasting and making audio books and this is the one I went with. I bought it off Massdrop and I did have to return it to CAD because the noise floor was high, but now it is incredibly quiet and makes listening to the audiobook I'm making, so much better.
Glad it worked out for you. My takeaway is that if I ever have a problem with a CAD mic no problem just come here and start complaining. Thanks Mike! You da man.
Mike -- just wanted to thank you for posting this. Based on your results, I sent my E100S to CAD (mentioning this video in my service request). 3 days later, I got it back -- absolutely NOISE FREE! My reaction was the same as yours: "Wow!"
As I'm using some cheap earphones, it sounds awesome before and after. This mic is a bit pricey in Europe compare to the US... I would love to use one (or two) :-D
Good on CAD for getting this fixed. I wanted the E100S, but after hearing the hiss and problems Mike was having, I changed my mind. Now, the E100S is back at the top of my list.
I got a kick out of your "surprise" of it all. I have a couple of the GXL2200's and have been very happy with them for internet radio broadcasting. I've been toying with going into VO as a "retirement" gig and all of your info is extremely helpful and importantly, entertaining.
This was the video that solidified my choice to get this mic and I have LOVED it for the last three years. But I just now saw that it has been discontinued! The latest rendition looks to be called the E100Sx. Would love to see a review of that if/when it's available now! (The website says coming soon still)
I became a CAD fan when I went to a studio where they had a modified E-200. I bought one and had it modified too with their mods guy. It's the best mic I have ever owned, and the one I use the most. I also have a CAD E-100 2. I prefer the Modified E-200.
We picked up one of these at the BH daily special at $199.00 after watching your videos. Oh, thx btw for taking the time to produce these videos. Anyway, thought we’d take a chance at that price plus BH has an excellent return policy. Hooked it up to a Tascam dr-40 to see If there was any crazy noise and was none that I could hear. The number 5391 was affixed to mic if that means anything. Thx again for your time and talent. 😷
Wow, the first video of your I could hear! Not because of the mic, but because all the prior videos I have seen you upload then so quietly that I have to crank my nice Bluetooth headphones and phone to 10, then push the pads against my ears. Great job! And glad they fixed your CAD!
What a bad luck with them. I never had issues with mine E100S and I read they were good to their customers... What a bad surprise :( Glad they've at last done something to help you!
Old video but I have an old CAD M177 I've had for a number of years I needed a part for and their customer service people were super responsive and friendly and hooked me right up. I got that mic for like $49 on a closeout and it's shockingly good for what it is.
Sounds like a hassle with all of the back and forth shipping. I really want to like this mic, but it sounds like a gamble. When I upgrade from my nt1, it'll be to a mkh416 I think. I'll choose reliability and QC any day. Thanks for doing these videos!
Awesome! My E100S is a couple years old and originally was dead silent, but I've noticed a quite noticeable "wind" noise the last few months. Definitely going to contact CAD. Thanks!
Last I looked (a while back) CAD were assembled in the U.S., but were actually among the first mics with-all Chinese guts-so whatever the CAD marketing department would have you believe, they are Chinese mics. That doesn't mean that, therefore, they are bad mics, but it's unlikely the e100 would ever be as quiet or as good sounding overall as, for example, a KSM32.
i love it. i get like that when i'm excited about good tech. "we're going to do a sound test video. yeah, we're going to do another sound test video". Pumped for you bro!!
Hey Mike, thank you very much for posting this video! I began to hear more noise with my CAD E100S-or was I imagining the noise? I sent my mic to CAD for a diagnosis. They informed me that the mic was repaired under warranty and is on it's way back! I will let you know how it behaves when I get it. Thanks again!!!
Thanks Mike. Great vid..love your vids....I have learnt so much. I would love to buy one of these but getting one that works does sound like a gamble to me. The QC is terrible. Lots of people woth noise problems out there. Also living in the UK and sending it back and forth to the USA...forget about it. (You had to do this 2 times....fo real?....what does that say about the company) Glad it worked for you. For me I am guessing they would have little incentive going by reviewers
Glad to hear this! They've had some pretty spotty QC the last few years. So much in fact that I started recommending against this otherwise fantastic mic. My theory that they were selling fast and they couldn't make them fast enough and let QC slip to make more might hold some water because the voice-over world is really taken by this mic.
Glad that your mic has been fixed this made me think again in buying a CAD e100s oh btw great that you haven't hit your sennheiser this time thanks for your efforts Mike keep up your awesome work
Cool channel! I stumbled upon your videos and I got hooked when you emphasized the importance of the recording space rather than buying the 5k condenser and record yourself in bathroom with it. Are you gonna tackle the the preamp world anytime soon? Three good mics and three good preamps/interfaces from three price categories would be awesome.
Your videos are awesome and i love follow you in your different "work situation" (i don't know how can i tell that) but continue and i hope you will keep this voice for the rest of your life x)
Great Video ! I can tell you are passionate about microphones and its sound. Fantastic job, I felt your excitement when you tested the CAD after it was delivered.. awesome!. When you get a chance would you recommend some budget microphones so that I can record my videos, sometimes they sound very bad and its probably because I use the integrated microphone of HD camera. Any guidance is appreciated !
Update...I purchased an Audio Technical at2005 dynamic mic to be able to eventually upgrade , what usb audio interface would you recommend to use with it ?
I love your videos Mike - Realy great stuff. However, as an audio engineer and recording instructor, I cringe when I see condenser mics plugged and unplugged while phantom power is engaged. Could this be a contributing factor to the noise your e100s developed? Thanks again for these fantastic comparisons!
I know this is SUPER off topic but I really feel like you are or were apart of Star Wars. Like maybe I’ve seen you before or you should just really be in it. You look SO Star Wars! Think about it...
Hey Mike, just wondering how it's behaved in the 1.5 yrs since this? I just had mine fixed, a similar 'wow' moment when I got it back....just hoping it sticks.
Interesting to see someone else who asked for repair and was met with good results. I see many comments here suggesting they only repaired Mike's because of UA-cam.
Oh my god, what a difference between the CAD and the Sennheiser! I'm not sure why you're so in love with that e100s. It sounds like an NT1A, but not as quiet. The e100 is way nicer sounding. I'd love to see you compare the vintage e1999 and the MKH 416.
Not only is it a shame that you had to send your mic back twice, worse is that CAD sells mics that don't match their own specs in the first place. I sent mine back immediately. It was horribly noisy. The fact that CAD made your mic so quiet just makes them seem more sleazy. It tells me they know how to make them quiet before they send them out the first time. But, apparently, they just don't care enough to live up to their own advertising.
Mine was originally dead quiet for a year or so, but recently noticed quite a bit more noise... I'm definitely contacting CAD for a fix. Excellent mic when right
My almost new E100s was noisy. Sent it back at a cost of almost AUS $100 with insurance, tracking, sign on delivery. Came back a couple of days ago much quieter, similar to your second return. But now it has developed a new noise issue, sounds like low-level rolling thunder or wind buffeting. I love this mic when it works but sheesh, this is too much.
What was the spectral view like in your DAW. Mine was petty grainy. I hear the noise floor a lot...I have a dbx286 and scarlett 2i2 on windows adobe audition
I was planning to buy this mic, but your video proves that the company sells sub quality product, and only agrees to address its defects if you're a big youtuber. That's shameful.
Mike, thanks for posting an awesome update. I had been watching for the MassDrop offering and never jumped in since you are not the only person that had issues. Just wondering if the MassDrop mics are out of spec and therefore priced lower.
This was one special video!! For 1 because it was so spontanious. Really cool andyour right, that mic sounds great! ps; you already know but Mat mcGlyn from recordinghacks has his own brand; Roswell microphones / Roswell pro audio. He's the go-to guy when it comes to mics and spreading the knowledge about the topic :-)
Hey Mike. Love your videos. Do you have any videos or advice on the preamps for your Zoom? Bought one after watching your "First VO Booth" set up. Thanks a bunch!
Mike! You mentioned in this video that this mic has a 5 year warranty. I ordered mine through the Massdrop offer and when it arrived I noted that there were two warranty terms mentioned in the accompanying literature. The warranty card states in large letters at the top "5 Year Limited Warranty." However there is an asterisk at the bottom of the card stating " 2 year warranty on all products classified as Personal Audio." It also says on the same card, "See product specification sheet, included with your microphone for warranty details." My enclosed spec sheet states "Two Year Limited Warranty." Did you get yours serviced within 2 years? Do you happen to have any clarity on this apparent conflict of statements? I'm just trying to sort this out. ******************* UPDATE ******************* Email reply from CAD confirms that the warranty term is 5 years!
Hey Mike, Since you did this video in 2017 have they corrected the problem with the 2020 to 2021 mics they sell know. It would be a shame if customers still have to send their mics in to be service 3 1/2 years later.
Hi Mike I am so impressed with your videos! I'm in London by the way- I am overwhelmed with what to buy for starting my home studio. So- I know that I want the Scarlett 2i2 interface Do I go with a Sennheiser or Rode mic And which computer would you recommend. I am on a budget by the way Please can you help? Thanks Tess
Awesome video Mike, I have to say I really enjoy your videos as your audio quality is amazing you can tell right away that you are professional speaker. Could you tell me if there is audio books that I could buy that you recorded? I just find your voice so soothing and calming 😀 I know it may sound wierd but I just find your voice so awesome to listen. And I watch most of your videos. Also a question would there be any chance you could do a tutorial on audacity? What processing I could do to bring up quality of my audio? I use only blue yeti now but planning on getting rode nt1 kit Thanks in advance Mike 😀🙏
Someone in the QA/repair is a deadbeat! Had you not pressed in the video (which somehow got back to other than a minion) you'd have a junkie mic! Point in favor of NOT getting a CAD!!
Think you're right...but your video might cause a lot of people writing du CAD saying "it's too noisy", when the problem is the interface - not the mic. Had that problem with my NT1a...I had no experience with "studio mics" and it was noisy af...luckily I got a friend who's a sound engeneer. He told me that my interface might be broken... Plot Twist. It wasnt...but the USB Port made some noise....man....took me hours find that problem...just using another usb port fixed everything xD
I have been interested in one of these mics since I've been watching/listening to your channel a lot lately. Would you speculate it would be enough of an issue to be hesitant to buy one? Especially since others have experienced same? Mic sounds great. Would just like to avoid the hassle if possible. I am looking for a new mic. This one sounds like it could suit me. Not so sure now.
i just got into entry level xlr to get rid of my headset mic. really went the dirt cheap neewer nw 800 way plus a generic 48v phantom supply. who knows.. maybe one day i'll just throw a neat chunk of money into that area. for now it's just for teamspeak, ingame chats and maybe twitch.. so.. i guess it's fine for now. there sure is a huge quality difference but you know.. i don't have any plans on making serious money with it and at least it's xlr :D
Hello Booth Junkie: Thank you so much for your excellent videos!!! I am coming from the music recording perspective as opposed to voice overs. However, I find that your videos are fantastic and very entertaining! Based on your videos, I added at CAD E100S to my collection and plan on getting another one at some point. However, I received my microphone serial number 3994 on Thursday March 30, 2017. I compared the noise floor of the microphone against an Aston Spirit and MXL 2001 on a Zoom R24 and Behringer x32 and the E100S has a significantly higher noise floor. I was wondering about the serial number on your E100S. Looking at the video, I think I see that the serial number is 3283. Is that correct? I am just wondering if CAD has some QC issues recently... Again, thank you for your videos!!! -Eric
Mike, how long is the warranty? I sent mine back a few years ago. It came back the same as the first time and I figured that's just how it is. Love this mic, but don't use it much cause of the gating needs.
I was super interested in the e100s but I just could never pull the trigger. This video helped me decide because in this video hearing those two side by side, really impressed me. What do you suggest using as a Preamp? I am using a simple Behringer 1204USB mixer into my computer.
I think you mentioned in an earlier vid that you have three E100s mics. Was the noise issue obvious in all of them? Are you sending back the others too (or do you no longer own them)? I assume the one you had repaired must either be the best of the bunch or your only remaining one if you were continuing to use it - with gate. I've got a tough decision with mine, sent to Australia from Amazon US. I use it daily and it's OK, but is noisier than other mics of mine. Sending it back from here is a bit of a bigger deal and I don't see a local outlet.
Part of the reason I went with a new RODE NT1 instead of the CAD e100s is this video and its comments, plus a video by George Whittam. There’s a number of people posting on other sites about the same apparent QC issue.
do you happen to have an AT2035 to do a comparison? I've been listening to a few of your videos and they've been very helpful in getting me up and rolling for doing some voiceover work for my shoddy little hole in the wall youtube channel. I can't afford nice mics as there's practically zero return on investment, but it would be nice to hear a comparison.
I'm not even interested in going into voice over, your videos are just really interesting
Very kind of you to say! Thanks!
Same!.
ikr!
Ditto.
yeah same here
Mike grows out his beard for extra noise dampening.
accurate comment
👏😂👏
On the one hand, it's nice they took care of it for you. On the other hand, it's a shame they only took care of it for you because you have a UA-cam channel with some presence. If you had been a regular consumer, it seems like they would have just ignored you.
EXACTLY!
That's EXACTLY what I'm concerned about as well.
bingo. And I'm in the market considering this mic.... NEXT
I think this comment/video might change there attitude. :-D
Was there any difference between before and after the refurb? Sure can't tell from THIS video!
Thank you so much for bringing this issue to public, I had the dreaded problem with my e100s like yours. I sent it in and it got repaired and now I am a happy man, Thanks!!!!
Mike,
Thank you so much for putting out these videos and for introducing me to this microphone. I was looking for a microphone for podcasting and making audio books and this is the one I went with. That is great to hear!
As I'm using some cheap earphones, it sounds awesome before and after. This mic is a bit pricey in Europe compare to the US... I would love to use one (or two) :-D
With headphones on i could clearly hear the difference, before the fix i had to the volume at 100 and then after i needed to turn it down.
Good on CAD for getting this fixed. I wanted the E100S, but after hearing the hiss and problems Mike was having, I changed my mind.
Now, the E100S is back at the top of my list.
that cad has a awesome presence just enough bass and incredible highs
I loved seeing the excitement in your face when you first "heard" the quiet!
I knew it! Mine has never had the issues you were having. So glad it's fixed, Mike.
+Jeff Clement me too! Thanks!
They've asked for feedback. Could you pls ask them what they changed?
I got a kick out of your "surprise" of it all. I have a couple of the GXL2200's and have been very happy with them for internet radio broadcasting. I've been toying with going into VO as a "retirement" gig and all of your info is extremely helpful and importantly, entertaining.
This was the video that solidified my choice to get this mic and I have LOVED it for the last three years. But I just now saw that it has been discontinued! The latest rendition looks to be called the E100Sx. Would love to see a review of that if/when it's available now! (The website says coming soon still)

yes! this is exactly what mine sounds like. it's like an SM7b of the condenser world. E100s has such an aggressive sound with almost no self noise.
What a bad luck with them. I never had issues with mine E100S and I read they were good to their customers... What a bad surprise :( Glad they've at last done something to help you!
Yay!! I'm glad you got your mic fixed!
Thank you for staying on this. I am going to send my mic in tomorrow.
Got mine back. What a difference!
i love it. i get like that when i'm excited about good tech. "we're going to do a sound test video. yeah, we're going to do another sound test video". Pumped for you bro!!
Thank You for communal ripple of joy today!! I'm sure there'll be a bump in CAD sales today :)
Man you have a great voice. Happy that you mic is working fine now!
well done...i was listening on my mackie hr824's the returned version sounds great no more wall of noise
Ha! Totally worth the effort of packing it up and having some patience :) Great vid!
what an amazing mic, sounds so pure.
I'm glad they fixed it!
Thanks Mike. Great vid..love your vids....I have learnt so much. I would love to buy one of these but getting one that works does sound like a gamble to me. The QC is terrible. Lots of people woth noise problems out there.

Glad to hear this! They've had some pretty spotty QC the last few years. So much in fact that I started recommending against this otherwise fantastic mic. My theory that they were selling fast and they couldn't make them fast enough and let QC slip to make more might hold some water because the voice-over world is really taken by this mic.

oh btw great that you haven't hit your sennheiser this time
thanks for your efforts Mike keep up your awesome work

I always let the ads run to help you out. I really appreciate your info,
i own two of these and they both are lovely.. a little bright in the high end, but if you compensate with eq they are KILLER!
I’m buying one of these at some point. Maybe around the holidays.
Your videos are awesome and i love follow you in your different "work situation" (i don't know how can i tell that) but continue and i hope you will keep this voice for the rest of your life x)

It shouldn't matter. It can make a "pop" noise in the monitors but no quality mic should be damaged by this hot swap.
Yeah, this is the way it should sound like. Even gets quieter when using a high pass filter, not on the mic, but on a pre-amp.
I just love your voice bro, you sound like the typicall guy that is perfect for all comercials and shiit, even trailers ^^
Not only is it a shame that you had to send your mic back twice, worse is that CAD sells mics that don't match their own specs in the first place. I sent mine back immediately. It was horribly noisy. Wow!!!! Big difference!
I have yet to make the plunge into voice over work on my youtube videos.. You have a really great channel! Such an interesting line of work.
I had no idea what you were talking about, until I heard the returned version. But..I liked the Neumann better, in the small clip I heard.
Yes, wow. Very nice!
I am not subscribed because I don't really have interest in Microphones but I love your videos and the way you make them
My almost new E100s was noisy.
3:02 that cut was too satisfying
Let's hope they have that kind of customer care for all their customers
That's one happy junkie!
Your voice is great
Sounds really really good, indeed.
What was the spectral view like in your DAW. Mine was petty grainy. I hear the noise floor a lot...I have a dbx286 and scarlett 2i2 on windows adobe audition
Interestingly the Neumann is humming away all the time at ~50 to 60Hz (but very silently).
I was planning to buy this mic, but your video proves that the company sells sub quality product, and only agrees to address its defects if you're a big youtuber. That's shameful.
Really love tests like this.
Mike, thanks for posting an awesome update. I had been watching for the MassDrop offering and never jumped in since you are not the only person that had issues. Just wondering if the MassDrop mics are out of spec and therefore priced lower.
Its a good question. I've seen the feedback too. Massdrop doesn't indicate that they are refurbs or "seconds".
Ok, now I’m sold.
This was one special video!!
For 1 because it was so spontanious.

Awesome video Mike, I have to say I really enjoy your videos as your audio quality is amazing you can tell right away that you are professional speaker. +1 interested in follow-up to hear what CAD said was the issue. Great videos!
TLM103 has some hum. Though it could be your cable.
Someone in the QA/repair is a deadbeat! Had you not pressed in the video (which somehow got back to other than a minion) you'd have a junkie mic! Point in favor of NOT getting a CAD!!
I really like that wooden box.
This actually gives me asmr. Something about listening to silence through a mic. Idk
Think you're right...but your video might cause a lot of people writing du CAD saying "it's too noisy", when the problem is the interface - not the mic.

Especially since others have experienced same? Mic sounds great. Would just like to avoid the hassle if possible. I am looking for a new mic. This one sounds like it could suit me. Not so sure now.
Hey Mike. I use the CAD GXL2200. It actually sounds pretty good. Have ever used it?
Thanks
i just got into entry level xlr to get rid of my headset mic.
really went the dirt cheap neewer nw 800 way plus a generic 48v phantom supply.
who knows.. maybe one day i'll just throw a neat chunk of money into that area.
for now it's just for teamspeak, ingame chats and maybe twitch.. so.. i guess it's fine for now.
there sure is a huge quality difference but you know.. i don't have any plans on making serious money with it and at least it's xlr :D
You got that kind of personalized attention precisely because you are on UA-cam and have 12 thousand subscribers. Bad publicity speaks loudly.
Dang, i wanted to buy one of these, but I don't want to buy a mic that I'm going to have to send in.
I would love if you can made a video comparing this to the MKH 416, I own one of these so I'm interested to know how it sounds in comparisons.
Please include more mics (ie NT1-A) in the noise comparison video if you decide to make one!
Awesome! did they ever tell you what the issue was?
Ahhhhhg I think mine is noisy...because of corona they are not able to workshop it till june (2 months time...maybe?)
I know I'm 3 years late to do the game, but, his mic sounds great to me. But, I don't know anything about this subject. I'm just learning.
you rock.
Wow that sounds great. Wonder what I should choose: THIs or Samson Q9U or Aston SPirit (well the latter is a condenser mic)?
Hello Booth Junkie:
Thank you so much for your excellent videos!!!

Mike, how long is the warranty? I sent mine back a few years ago. It came back the same as the first time and I figured that's just how it is. Love this mic, but don't use it much cause of the gating needs.
I believe its 5 years.
I can't afford nice mics as there's practically zero return on investment, but it would be nice to hear a comparison.
the neumanl had a low freq hum, and i literally heard nothing on the CAD
Taylor I heard just a bit of noise, but the Neumann had the same noise PLUS the hum.
Wow. I really sure now for buy this mic!
