  • Josie and Jefferson are back in the RDR Studio continuing work on Josie's 1973 VW Beetle. When we started this process, we believed this was a 1974 model, and ordered everything based on that idea. We didn't realize that VW changed the seats quite often on these and that we needed to check to verify year. Well, as it turns out, we learned a lesson. The seats we have are 1973 model year, in fact, the whole dang car is a 73, it was titled wrong, so all this time, we thought it was a 74, HILARIOUS.....
N-E-Way, the seat covers, more specifically the seat back covers, are for 74 model year, 1973 seats are a 1-year only , so we had to either go buy different seats or call TMI and get new custom covers made. Jefferson made a phone call and got super lucky to find a set of 74 seats, so we swapped our seat backs with the willing local, and boom, we can move forward, no harm, no foul. Ok, maybe a slight foul.
We will show the entire process of restoring these seats from old dingy black boring seats to shiny new fancy-shmancy seats that look so dang good! All with the help from TMI Products, who did an incredible job on these custom seat covers.
Speaking of, we keep saying these are custom covers, and they are, but that doesn't mean we had to jump through hoops are anything. It was simply a matter of filling out an online form with TMI and our covers were ordered. They will even send you real upholstery samples so you cna se the colors and feel the textures before you order. It was a very easy process, and well worth it, this interior is really clean.

Help me here....... Are the front and rear pointy things on the seat bars only pushed through one side (back side) of the folded vinyl and not over the inserted wire and through both sides? (A close up would really help me here)

The wire should be trapped by the spikes, and when possible, all the way thru.

Did you pull the trash bag out and I just missed it or did it stay in?

@@Reddirtrodz Boy, as much as like your video, this is such a low-end quality job. No rust removal, very basic cleaning, no thoughts spend on correct upholstery skills, and the trash bag needs to be removed after installation. All show, no shine. Use horse-hair upholstery as seat, no foam. Do it right!

@MrMac-kg7vy we did do it right. First- horsehair was replaced by foam for a lot of reasons. Foam is better for cars and boats.
Second- leave the bag in the seat so that the vinyl can move around a bit and not get stuck. Pull the cover off any OEM sear made in the last 50 years and you will find foam wrapped in thin plastic. Some OEMs even used special size plastic bags to cover the foam. Leave it.
The frames were in good shape and didn't have much rust. The other seats we did that had a bit of rust were cleaned and painted.
These were done right. Thanks for watching and leaving your comments!
