    Takes me back to when I started 15 years ago. If you want launch/landing suggestions; Launching with the wing layed out like you did has the problem of the prop blowing the tail of the wing over the nose interfering with inflation which can result in the wing not coming up straight. After laying out like you did with no slack in the A's, stand behind the center of the wing, reach down and pull the rest of the material (center and tail) and tuck it under the nose through the center 1/3 of the wing. Now nothing will block the nose during inflation and the wing will come up faster and straighter. Powered landing tends to work better and in light to no wind after landing and slowing some I keep my eye on the wing, keep a bit of power on and lower the brakes until the wing starts falling backwards. As soon as the wing sags backward kill the motor and the wing will lay down softly and very neatly behind with the lines staying fairly straight and out of the prop. Think of it as using forward motion from the motor to "blow" the wing back behind you. Flying a trike you will learn to control the wing with the motor more than you do when foot launching. To help with torque I raised the right carabiner slightly by switching to longer hang strap. Hope you find something here helpful!

    Well done, dude! Being a trike flyer myself I know the hard bits. I reckon the biggest difference in starting is that you won't be able to take a step sideways to get centered. So the trickiest part is preventing oscillation and how to deal with it when it happens. For me a cross wind take off is a no go, to start with..... And I was taught to always land with the engine off, but I don't know what my co-trikeflyers will have to say about that. Good luck!

      Hi Millbrook. haha yep, there are hard bits, I was thinking Tucker would feel way less nervous with the wing above him,lol I do cross wind launches quite a bit, they can be difficult, I rarely land engine off, gives me options but almost always I could land engine off. Nice job Tucker. I've been a foot launch for 3 years and recently learned to trike on the same setup with Kyle and Travis in Nov 2019 and got the tandem exemption (don't know if you and Jacklyn remember meeting me while you were in Lake Wales). As for your hang point and your weight...my recommendation is to to a hang test or fly with barely any fuel to see where your recline angle is. The amount of fuel in the tank is definitely a factor (and you'll find when you have a passenger this applies as well) so when you fly for a while and use up fuel your center of gravity will change. This is not as big of a deal with foot launch but as you pointed out you definitely don't want to land nose down..ever. Fly safe! Welcome to the Trike (old man) club! LOL

    • @TuckerGott
      @TuckerGott  3 роки тому +3

      Good point! That makes sense because the fuel tank is farther away from the pilot. I've moved the hang point back twice now and it's much more comfortable. I think it's still a little nose high but much better than it was in this video.

    Great to see you develop a new experience and “type” of aircraft! The main transition is the extra drag and mass that you are controlling. Just wondering if your hang point is a little forward, as the touchdown of the back wheels and the delay before you start getting steering control could catch you out on bumpy pitted terrain. Have fun, I’m jealous!

    The wheel turning thing you were talking about is called "counter-steering" which is what motorcyclists and bicyclists do when they're at speed. Essentially, when going faster than about 10 mph on a motorcycle, you push the handle for the direction you want to turn (push the right handle forward slightly and the bike will wobble to initiate the turn to the right). Hope this helps explain it!

    I'm late to this, but you were dead on with the motorcycle analogy. Generally any vehicle that leans is affected by what is known in the motorcycle world as counter-steering. under about 20mph you should be safe to turn as usual.
    This generally doesn't happen with trikes, as they aren't designed to lean, for the most part. Your suspension may be a bit too soft.

    Tip and trick from Pascal Valée (if you don't know him go check him out) To avoid the jolt on the trailing edge of the wing on initial rise, Once your layout is properly made, pull the trike slowly 2-3 feet forward until all the lines get under tension. The trailing edge will crumple up underneath the rest of the wing and you will avoid the trailing edge flying and flapping up before settling in the right position. This also helps the wing keeping a better centralized position on initial lift. Great job on this first flight. It's nice to witness all the care and attention you give to details, like a true pilot should. Cheers

    I took some kiting lessons 6 yrs ago with the intent of learning to fly paramotors because 2-axis flying looked like so much fun. But wow, at least in the learning phase, it was a lot......I mean a lot of taxing physical effort and I'm in great shape w/o etc (I'm a little guy and approaching 65 y/o.) Then I strapped on the 70 lbs of kit. Whoa! With my bad arthritic knee's, there was just no way I could do this sport. I had considered pressing on and making things happen via the "trike" but........ your vid reminded me of the myriad of variables what with carabiners, lines, and on and on and on not to mention the upfront costs - that of a small 3 axis ultralight. I've been a licensed pilot for quite some and I'm sticking to it and my experimental category aircraft. I love to watch the paramotor guys, but each time I do, it reminds me of why I prefer 3 axis flight - simpler, faster, more comfortable, and not so physically taxing. Blue skies:)

    Tucker - The high-speed steering issue you are experiencing on the ground is called counter-steering. You are effectively operating a motorcycle while on the ground. Basically above a certain speed you start experiencing 'push-left go left' rather than low speed 'push left go right' You just have to find what speed that is and be aware of it, it's perfectly predictable.

    we had a 4 wheel,cart, built it ourselves. It won awards. Motor assembly was about 80 lbs. It was setup for Two people , passenger in front and below pilot. The wheels were from a solid piece of aluminum, milled down with a deep dish center. The tires were wide and not so tall, but a smooth slick surface. It was this way so as not to bury wheels into sand or soft grass. Imagine just one front wheel with two people , try to make any sudden turns in a soft field, your gonna flip it. So we had alot of stability. The cart was more like a gocart, long stable rails, not so narrow in width. It was designed to have front wheel up like in this video. You come down on the soft rear wheels first always. We tried many wings, the best was a huge ,more surface area style wing for more lift and stability. It was hard not to touch down a wing tip all the time for how wide it was.
    We took out a few blue runway lights in our day. After brother and I landed in a tall grass field with a tall fence to clear, having enough speed ,power and lift to clear said fence during take off would be the challenge. Having those dune buggy wide, slick soft wheels kept us from burying the wheels into the soft super tall grasses, we cleared the fence so close in front of us. All this happened in the Santa Barbara CA area
    This was right across the field to the Santa Ynez CA airport All this to keep from hitting your spine or breaking your legs, relying on those wheels
    to land softly. The little trikes looked too sketchy

    To get smoother inflation and faster/stabel launch of your wing going through propwash: when you have conected your glider to yourbtrike, go back pulling your A s so they get tension(All of Them). Thst way it infltate smoother ang goescquicker through your propwash. You need to adjust your hangpoint as you point out, your front weel should be more like 15-20cm above the rearweels. Gives better comfort and better thrust. Nice go man 🤘

    I want to do this so bad. I had to give up skydiving when I got too fat for my gear & went through a divorce but unlike most skydivers I enjoyed flying the canopy more than doing R/W so I would mostly jump solo and open high so I could spend more time flying the canopy. I'm still too heavy for my old gear but who cares? because I want a paramotor on a trike setup! I build mini-bikes & mini-trikes as a hobby & being in my early 60's now a paramotor-trike is right up my alley as I can't run as fast as I used to and know the dynamics involved with riding a trike on grass & dirt at higher speeds. It's nothing like a motorcycle or 4-wheeled cart. Besides the centrifugal force throwing you in the opposite direction of the turn, there is a limit to how much of an angle you can turn the front wheel without flipping so I weld stops on my steering necks to prevent over-turning. I'm really looking forward to watching more of your trike videos. This one was great!
