    In our current times of growing scarcity for all things relative to gardening, I have noticed that finding containers to grow things in has been somewhat challenging. This is a neat alternative!

    • @SanDiegoCaliforniaUSA
      @SanDiegoCaliforniaUSA 2 роки тому +5

      It is great idea. But you'll always have your natural soil. You just have to know what you can grow in it and which plants will provide food for you in your zone. Also it's wise to know your wild plants. Dandelion. Chickweed. Wood Sorrel. Purslane. Super easy to grow, they come up wild and you can provide them extra water here and there to help them grow more abundant for you.

    • @SanDiegoCaliforniaUSA
      @SanDiegoCaliforniaUSA 2 роки тому +7

      Oh and also look up to see if you have any native edible plants in your area. Great plant to have around is a native plant that provides you food too.

    • @angelatoplovich8998

      I agree, pots are challenging to find and very expensive! I love this alternative. I'm think I'm going to use a # 2 tin tub as my mold and make several to grow vegetables in....I'm thrilled to have found this. However, I think I may wash another coat of cement inside and out after it dries to make a bit more stable

    • @nc8524
      @nc8524 2 роки тому +3

      True..and especially now I think stores have seen uptick in people gardening so prices even higher. I can't believe what plain ole run of the mill terra cotta planters cost now- its insulting! I got some way cheaper last year. Good to know how to also make plain grow bags and other things more decorative not just for yourself but so no one complains about aesthetics.

    Hello mate
    the idea is good but I see it a bit weak
    I think that once the cement has hardened, you should give it a second coat, or whatever is needed. inside or outside, to give more solidity to the structure, even use something similar to fiber cement, especially on the upper edge, which is one of the areas that will support more loads
    greetings good job

    this is literally the best garden hack I've seen in years. was trying to figure out how to keep my grow bags from getting mold all over them (live in south east) because I'm in an apartment balcony gardening...didn't want to stain the balcony. Think this will be an inexpensive, attractive solution. And I can even get the cheap grow bags, which i hesitated to use alone...thinking they would not hold up as well as SmartPots. Thank you Thank you Thank you

    Similar containers used for water storage were used in poorer villages.Hessian was sewn to make the container shape.It was then filled with a material like sand or sawdust and a concrete render was applied thinly on the outside.The pot was then emptied and rendered on the inside.Large pots were made in situ.They were long lasting as long as they were not moved and could be adapted to be a planter.No metal reinforcing was used.

    You can do that with mortar but add about a cup of type 2 wood glue (it suspends the sand particles in the mortar mix and adds flexibility). You can make it much “soupier” so it’s easier to work with...you could also do this with a sheet, clothes, canvas drop cloth, cloth laundry bag, ect...

      I wonder if one makes just one, and use that as a support/mold to hang & dry the next one on.
      As it looks quite finicky to work with the wire frame each time.
      Plus just leave the first one on the wire to help for a better 'footing' for the following pots?

    • @lilolmecj
      @lilolmecj Місяць тому

      There is one disadvantage in doing this, and each gardener has to make their own choices. The advantage of fabric pots is they do not get root bound, because when the roots grow through to air they die/ self limit. By adding cement you take away this advantage. Now you may not be using felt pots for this reason, maybe just for low cost. This does look nice, and maintains the low cost advantage.
