@texasprepper2 - try using two 1x1 wood strips under bags. tis will air prune roots on bottom of bag. this will make it easier to remove plant at end of season.
Hmmmmm... that's a great idea!
Some of my grow bags are sitting in a kiddie pool. Those plants look great!
Kiddie pools are great for grow bags!
My brother uses them too 👍😎
Thank you so much for any help with the Grow Bags. Im on 3rd floor and im not 20 anymore. Im trying to learn about growing potatoes bcuz I go thru quit a bit of them. I eat tomato sauce. Im wondering if I can make my own Marinara/pizza sauce. I think that might be a little too ambitious. There's more important things to learn. So thank you. 👍 New subscriber and a Massachusetts Trump girl.
Well, thanks so much for watching and subscribing Massachusetts Trump girl 😊
I think you can do anything you set your mind to!
Excellent idea. I think under bed totes would probably do nicely. My tomatoes did very well in grow bags. So did my peppers. Corks could make good plugs.
That's a great idea, thanks! 😊
So many cool ways to grow food!
Absolutely :)
Hi from Southwest TN. I know this was 2 years ago.
I have been taking potting mix bags. Cutting little holes 3-4 inches from the bottom of the bag. Fitting them down in the grow bag. Then fill. It works so good for me.
During the winter, I save several peppers. My garage is south facing. It take them in and out daily. Except when it is under 45 degrees. I over winter them plus I get peppers in the winter. It works the best with Jalapeno and Cayenne Peppers.
I take a bloom and pollinate each bloom.
Also I top them out before winter by cutting growth from the top. And pruning any dead or yellowing growth. In spring, I do it again and add more dirt and fertilizer.
I enjoy your video. You have great tips as well.
🌻👩🏼🌾🌻
I tried that one winter. I took some peppers in the barn… In and out all winter.
As I remember it they did pretty decent but not absolutely fantastic. You’re probably doing something right, where I was doing something wrong 😊
Great video thanks for filming
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm really fond of concrete mixing tubs; they are cheap and easy to source at DIY stores. Don't know about the plugs, though.
Kiddie wading pools, too - but I'm moving away from those cause they're so big. The small ones are 3'-4' in diameter.
I'm familiar with those.
They would work
I am trying grow bags for the first time. The trays are so expensive. I just ordered a tray for a dog crate.. 21 bucks and holds 6 7 gallon grow bags. Not to deep but going to try it.
Love your videos.
That is awesome!
You can try these too: www.walmart.com/ip/Hyper-Tough-Automotive-7-Quart-Drain-Pan-7QDP-19-Black/463320093
But, may not be big enough.
Research it as to how big the diameter is
@@BIGALTX If the basic oil change/oil drain pans are large enough for folks then I'd recommend getting the $1.25 versions that you should be able to find at any of the Dollar Tree (now the $1.25 & up) stores. I've put dozens to use for multiple purposes in my garden the past few years.
@@Nunyah_Bidness Great tip. thanks!
I just cut some of the new tomato plant growth and made "clone" plants. they will wilt down but soon put on roots and perk right up. That way I had a new plant that was better than allowing the old "used up" plant to continue. Hopefully, I will get a fall bumper crop of tomatoes.
One of these in the grow bags was a clone I made several months ago to replace one that died
I want to learn to clone.
@@deerpark39 when it comes to tomatoes its as easy as taking a cutting and putting it in a class of water till it roots.
You have me sold on wicking tubs I am here in Texas also been asking farmers for their tubs it’s funny cause they act like they don’t know what I am asking so hitting up the co op asking if they know who I can ask for those tubs if not going on internet and buying them want to get my fall garden planted
They are out there... just have to look for them :)
Try concrete mixing tubs from a DIY store. Kiddie wading pools (Walmart) work, too.
Kirsten Whitworth thank you
That’s how I LOVE to eat okra!!
Hahaha... nice!
Excellent thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Put the okra on skewers and grill it. Not slimy and really good!
Not slimy if grilled...?
Thanks for the tip...I'll have to try it.
How long on the grill?
What do you look for... color change?
TexasPrepper2 the hubby likes to baste the okra in a bit of oil or butter and season. Choose your fav seasoning. Doneness depends on whether it is still firm or has softened. Typically takes about 10-15 minutes on top rack.
Thanks!
Thanks
Welcome
Thanks for the proverb. I'm a little bit too aggressive. Tomatoes are expendable. Just have more seedlings ready and ditch the old plants. Subbed.
Agreed 👍😎
came at a perfect time thanks
Good job 👏
Thank you Ben! 😎
How long does the water last in the bottom of the tray? How much water do you put in the tray? I have 5, 7, 10, 15, and 20 gallon grow bags. Is it necessary to water from the top also?
I like to try to keep about 2 inches in the tray. But it really depends on how hot it is. You can water from the top or put water in the tray doesn’t make any difference.
I keep coming back to this video and wondering if id be saving myself a lot of trouble using trays. What grow zone are you? Im in missouri 6, so water is hit and miss.
Zone 8.
East Texas
Where and what do you suggest getting the trays to put under the grow bags. I’m new to this been using earthboxes. Please help me
Hoss Tools has some trays that will do a good job. They weren't quiet big enough for these 10 gallon bags, but would do 7 gallon or smaller. LEARN MORE ABOUT HOSS TOOLS HERE: bit.ly/homesteadadvisor
Look under GARDEN TOOLS - SEED STARTING SUPPLIES.
Also for another idea, watch again at about 11 minutes in.
I am growing in grow bags and earthboxes and they are both producing quite well. I find the earthboxes less labor intensive in terms of needing water.
Rainwater has dissolved oxygen in it.
It also washes out salts that accumulate.
Now what do you do about mosquitoes?
Used this last year: amzn.to/2R3K6JA
Seemed to work great.
I'll try to do a video on it next week.
Stay tuned!
@@BIGALTX Many thanks!
put the holes at the level you wish to drain. no need for plugs.
I used the plugs in the hottest part of the summer when I wanted to trap all the water I could
How about green alge on grow bag they look like fungus? If he responds will be helpful.
I don’t think it’s a fungus. Just algae, no big deal.
What are those trays?
Or anyone else have any suggestions you can buy on Amazon for the water collector/holder under the bags?
I was thinking a few 2x6's and then put a tarp over it and the bags in it...
I've seen folks do what you are describing.
Depending on the size of your bags, you could use something like this:
www.walmart.com/ip/Hyper-Tough-Automotive-7-Quart-Drain-Pan-7QDP-19-Black/463320093
With this system will an irrigation system be needed?
"Needed"... no
Preferred... yes
I always like to use a drip system when I can
@@BIGALTX thank you
Do you know if potatoes would work in containers like this? We had horrible problems with moles this year, and my potatoes ended up being a total wash. :(
This guy grows a LOT of potatoes in plastic pots.
Not sure about grow bags, but I'm going to try it :)
I've done potatoes in grow bags just fine. The felt ones need more watering than the ones made from tarp-like material but either way the plants grow well.
@@dianeladico1769 Great to know, Diane.
Is the production good?
@@BIGALTX Yes, it is. You need a container size to approximate the area the plant would have in the ground if you want maximum production. Most potato grow bags are big enough but I've used all kinds/sizes of bags, pots and containers and gotten good results. Fingerlings need less room, about 3 (nursery) gallons. I cut the seed potatoes to 1-2 eyes for containers.
Do you know Home Grown Veg? He's a rockstar of small container growing. He'll get 1.5+ pounds reliably from a 10 inch bucket with one small seed potato. Allotment Diary uses bigger containers. Just to give you an idea of the range and what you can expect. If you have the time, they're worth watching.
One caveat: containers heat up faster than in-ground and once the soil temp hits 80 tuber growth is done so start them early. You can also start them in late summer and let them mature into fall since you have such a long season. By the time the fall crop starts making tubers it will be cool enough. HGV's 'fast start' process gives a great head start for Spring planting.
Looking forward to your container potato videos!
Diane Ladico
I’ve watched several of Allotment’s videos. He gets massive production!
Never tried it but another UA-camr inserts soaked skewers into the stem end of okra and grills it. He claims the okrasickles aren't slimy.
"Okrasickles"... I love it!
Someone else commented here that they were great on the grill.
thanks!
If you don't cut okra, it isn't slimy.
Can I put my grow bags directly on my patio or do they need to be placed in something like a kiddie pool as I’ve heard some people do?
The main reason for the containers under the bags is water retention
The water will (sometimes) come out the bottom when they get saturated
What do you do for the green alge on the bags? Is that harmful to the plants? I'm not sure because I'm a new gardener.
Any time you have water and sun... you're going to have algae.
I don't worry about it
@@BIGALTX thank you so much for responding back. I really enjoy your channel ☺️ 😊 ❤️ 💯
New Sub here I'm on the Texas Coast and interested in urban gardening.
Thanks for subbing.
Where on the TX coast?
@@BIGALTX i live in the suburbs of Corpus Christi.
Nice... :)
@@deeladybug2618 Cool! My dad was from Robstown.
Love your videos. Can you talk about how to water wicking beds, how often, your method, using drip, etc.? Thanks!
In the summer, I water most every day... but this is TX... your mileage may differ :)
Here's a video showing my irrigation systems: ua-cam.com/video/0vHU8_fbZ0k/v-deo.html
@@BIGALTX Thanks for more on what you do? Do you keep the reservoirs filled and water from the bottom daily? Do you use fertilizer each and every time? We new to wicking beds so we're trying to get our heads around what to do. I realize it changes with temperatures and the size of plants, etc. Thanks for all of your videos!
I had someone recommending kiddie pools with holes drilled at 4 inches for trays. They said it worked well. Your thoughts. I am in the New Orleans area and I’m just starting to plant a grow bag garden. Any info would help. Soil to start?
Yes, I've seen lots of folks using kiddie pools.
Seem to work GREAT!
only thing i have against kiddie pools the cheap $7 ones break easy especially after cold and hot season outdoors
I’ll pass on the “slime”! 😅
😀👍
I thought plants don't like "wet feet". Why is that not a problem?
It is a problem. That's why I'm draining them when they get too full.
On the other hand, tomatoes don't mind it too much.
Remember, TONS of tomatoes are grown hydroponically (all water, no dirt)
The trays look like mosquito breeders.
I use this, and haven't found them to be a problem: amzn.to/360PW2S
@@BIGALTX Thank you - good video. I'm new to your channel and container gardening. Do you put this in the reservoir water - the water that is going to your plants? Those dissolved chemicals might not be safe for food. Just a thought...
I really don’t know. I’ll try to remember to check the label.
