    When covering the drainage holes, rather than screen or tape or stones, consider a used coffee filter. Sand stays in, excess moisture goes right through. For bigger pots use a hand spray bottle of water to wet the filters so they conform to, and stick to the pot until you drop your soil in to hold them in place. By end of season the filters will disappear. Just a thought.

    My elderly mom plants beans by taking a stick, and using it to to make a small hole in the ground. She then drops 3 seeds in it and slides her foot across to cover the hole with a bit of soil. Walks along poking, dropping and covering. No bending whatsoever. Smart. Always plant 3 beans together,she advices. Her harvests are awesome.

      Long known as a "dibble stick" and still in use after centuries because it is cheap, easy, and and spares the back. Three seeds is a hangover from power numbers or magic numbers. Not important and not necessary, but no harm done if you have plenty of seeds.

    Well Dan ,well done... Another very informative video with not a bunch of garbage talked about in between stuff you give pure information and pure joy seeing Alice's face in this video I love when you have her in your videos. I am a consultant for a greenhouse here and the planting started a couple of months ago inside we have such a short growing season in North Dakota. Your channel is referred to by me as great information and material for other people to delve into especially new gardeners. Hope you don't mind I'm sharing you with so many people but your videos are one of the only three channels I watch because you don't beat around the bush when it comes to useful information. A big plus with your UA-cam channel is you're not always selling something. Great suggestions great ways of do-it-yourself always look forward to them. ✌️❤️🌍🦋🌱🌿🍃🌏

      @ Shawneen Hammer What a kind comment! As a total newbie to gardening (this year will be my first time ever trying my own garden) would you be willing to share with us the other two gardening channels you like? As it is I feel quite overwhelmed with all there is to learn. It would be so helpful to just turn to a handful of resources I know others have found trustworthy and reliable. I don't have the discernment yet in this area to know who's really got the best information to help me get started in the right direction. Thank you for any guidance you're willing to share 🙏 😊. The two that I like the best and watch a lot other than this one are The Rusted Garden with Gary Pilarchik. Robbie and Gary(Rob and Gary are in California.. she does not have anything planted really in the ground everything she has is in containers she's older like I am) Garden answer. Another one that is actually a grower and I really like her as a grower myself but I think she's very interesting and informative. Sometimes you have to kind of go through stuff and make mistakes and this lady is good about showing you things that didn't turn out so she doesn't always throw away her mistakes. I love to help people that's why I like to be a greenhouse consultant and I wish I were 20 people so I could just spread all the information that I know and have learned through the years of gardening and greenhouse management before I leave the Earth. When I was growing up and worked on farms and garden and helped I was learning and didn't realize it until I got older and new things that I thought everybody just knew and other people wanted to know more that's how I got into greenhouses and all that because I've done that since I was in high school before . I hope these channels help.Self Sufficient Me is another one that's good that guy is in Australia. But he's just a very good guy like this guy not all frills and thrills and just basic and shows you things and not overly explaining and not needing expensive complicated ways to do things

    Had a miserable time with rolly pollys in my garden, stripping everything down to the ground. I found the Sluggo product that I was using on slugs worked like magic! YEs! Now I apply it around all my young seedlings. Last years issue was rabbits…so everything has to be fenced in with chicken wire. It’s always something when you garden, squirrels, deer, bean beetles…the list is endless! Interesting about raising beans and peas as transplants. I had always understood them to be not fond of being transplanted. Will have to try it.

      I found that in my garden, the ones that were bigger and transplanted out were less likely to have pests destroy them. Slugs, bugs and animals liked the smaller seedlings. So when I direct sowed them, it was a disaster. Transplants had great success.

      @@patriciatinkey2677 be prepared to switch things up a bit as wildlife gets accustomed to such things after a while, especially raccoons bc they're crafty & watch what we do, learn how to get around our "protections". I have lots of black bears, deer, elk, fox, hawks, eagles, basically name it & I have it. The deer & elk use my mega solar lights to guide them to me, it's their inquisitive nature. I put up strings of soda cans about 3' off the ground a little ways off from garden like a perimeter fence, the noise frightens them & the bears away when the wind blows or they touch it. Fishing line & a drill bit & you have a warning system. Anything smaller & you need to fence it & maybe even cover with a pvc frame with chicken wire attached so it's light enough to put up, pick up when going in & out of the garden, opossum & raccoons climb & jump into the garden from fence posts & trees. Am just starting out in a very remote area in TN & have sought some advice from the locals bc of all the wildlife. An eagle swooping in to get a critter from the garden can do some serious damage to crops so is best to protect sides & overhead as well! The bees can still get through so no issues there! Get creative & good luck!!

    Another thing I’ve tried to keep birds away from my garden and especially away from the elderberry shrubs I grow is using the anti bird holographic tape made into streamers and tied around the top of plants and the elderberries. It’s cheap enough and can be bought just about any where. The birds don’t like the sound of the streamers and when the sun hits it they are scared off.

    You use a hard way to shuck your beans. I use two different methods.
    One..I put the dry pods in a pillow case and throw into the dryer on "air dry" and tumble for a while.
    Two.. I lay a plastic tarp on the driveway and lay the dry whole bean plants in the plastic. I drape the two sides of the tarp over the dry plants. I then just roll the car back and forth over the tarp. I can then easily take out the plant stems/leaves, then after that pour the bean pods and chafe back and forth in the wind between to large bins. The bean chafe will blow out in the wind . Just like I do with the dryer beans. It do it on the lawn and then just mow the bean chafe later.

    I've tried starting several vegetables early in containers and then transferring to the garden thinking they would get a jump start and produce sooner, but I didn't find that to be the case. When I planted later directly in the garden, the produce started at the same time as those I started early. Maybe it's not the age of the plant that's so important for an early harvest, but maybe it's the hours of sunlight. I don't know... Has anyone else ever done a comparative study like this?

    I already planted beans and peas before seeing this. Beans and peas are not easy plants to transplant from my experience, and it is much easier to just throw the beans in a hole in the ground and water it. It works and it is a lot easier.

    My advice for preventing birds and other animals are;
    1. Used chop sticks, put in ground facing different directions. Like little death spears.
    2. Try using a plastic owl. I keep one on my front porch to keep birds from coming and pooping everywhere.
    3. Tie pieces of caution tape to sticks, then stick them in the ground all around the plants. It will deter all animals, including birds.

I thought squirrels had dug the seeds up because only one plant in my row survived. This happened twice and finally by my third planting (protected by hardware cloth) I have a row of Sugar Snaps growing. After seeing your video I realize it could have been birds.

Here in Moscow Idaho it is still cold but warming up in the 40 'a I still have snow on the ground but I have shoveled out the area for the green house. Have a frost in August so I wish to grow the beans and Peas inside it plus tomatoes. But I am not sure when to start them up in my fiberglass greenhouse.

    I’ve given up on planting into the ground. I’m growing peas in my kitchen with a southern facing window and grow lights. Strawberries, too. I love lemon grass tea, and must start lemon grass in the house early then put into a bigger pot outside when it get warm enough. I live in Zone 4 growing zone, the season here is short. I keep pots of plants outside in summer, on long benches, it’s near the hose. Then use chicken wire and posts, we just have too many wild animals where I live. Then rip apart a few plastic grocery bags into sashes, the tie them to the chicken wire. Keeps the deer out.

    • @blondek767
      @blondek767 2 роки тому +1

      It sounds good, but we live ontop of a mountain and get very strong winds with storms. Only wood or metal with glass would do. Instead I will be using chicken wire and posts, then tie sashes cut from plastic grocery bags, to keep wild animals out. I wanted to lay black gardening fabric on the ground, to prevent grass and weeds, under my benches. We were discussing tonight about building a cage from chicken wire to protect the strawberry plants. I have them started in the house, they are almost 150 days old. They must be protected from mice and birds. And skunk, and squirrels...lol.

      Hi! Seeing this method for the first time and I'm mind blown. So you use sand to start all of your seeds?? Peppers, zucchini, tomatoes etc...??? This would be amazing. Has to be much easier than soil. How do you go about fertilizer and such? Just treat the sand like it's soil??

    • @Auguur
      @Auguur 2 роки тому

      @@Muffintop2286 I mostly use the sand for cuttings now. I have gone back to peat-based starter mix for seeds mainly because I have a ton of the 6pack starter trays and the sand gets a little too heavy, making it more difficult to handle.
