Pay no attention to me saying Icy taps down Vine Mare. I meant to cut that part, but forgot to while editing. It's being processed out of the video right now, but anyone commenting "hey, you can't tap down Vine Mare with Icy!" is absolutely right, of course
Strictly Better MtG I was wondering about that. You can still tap down necessary lands/or mana permanents during their upkeep to prevent them from casting things at sorcery speed
Totally a Video playing the deck would be great, but maybe he doesn't like mtgo and investing in a cam+ asking the shop/players if he has their consent to publish the video is a lot of extra work for only a bit of contend. Again love the Idea too just two reasons why he probably doesn`t.
I was kind of thinking the same, 3 sounds nice. Also, you should put some notes on the video for that and the green mane thing... and the "put on top of your deck" thing too. Also Dev, thanks you so much for such an awesome brew for such a little price, there is nothing like wining with a 5 bucks deck on FNM. I'm so happy your budget decks are back!
Yeah my last deck 7,50 so toughen up man it is a harsch competativ world out there follow up or you`ll lose. Still manageable with some saving in food and electricity xD.
If your paycheck is $5, I suggest you return to the 1800s. Buy stocks, then cash out around 1920 and hoard gold and liquor. You will one day be able to afford these decks.
Bought this deck a week ago. Went to my first friday night magic at my local game shop. Won 2/4 games with people. I am brand new to magic and I definitely didn't play it as well as I could've but hey it got me a pack of cards and really let me have a good time. Thanks bro, I appreciate it.
Dev you are AWESOME!! This deck wins! Hands down. I just put it together for my local Standard Showdown tonight and it killed!! Can’t wait to put together the R/B Menagerie. Rakdos for life!!
I know, it bugs me too. Mythic wild cards aren't that hard to accumulate, getting a few Rares is like pulling teeth because every deck needs fucking 40 of them anymore if you're playing over 1 color.
Surprised how easy was to listen to you talk about this deck, at first, I was surprised that this video is 20 minutes. Not disappointed about one of those minutes. Well done. An awesome build.
dev you’re probably one of my favorite mtg youtubers. i don’t even play standard that much anymore, but i still watch your content because your positivity always puts me in a good mood!
i started playing MTG Arena last week after years of not playing MTG at all. I'm gonna use this deck for a few weeks until i get familiar with it and then i'll spend the wildcards i have, it shall get some good upgrades. After that i'll go buy the cards from my LGS. A nice way to come back to MTG. Thank you Dev!
I know that commenting helps you out and I've been following you since Eldritch Moon, so I really should be more active :). You're fantastic dude. With Arena I can now with relative ease test out decks and I just gave this a spin in free play and I'm 5-1 at the moment. Tweaked it a little with a few upgrades like Gifted Aetherborn and Ravenous Chupacabra but it's true to the deck's gameplan. Chainer's Torment and Vampire Sovereign do not disappoint, wow! Thanks for everything you do my dude.
Been looking for a deck to dip my toe into standard and am very excited about this Managed to get it all for just under £10 which didn't seem possible for a half decent standard deck, this surviving rotation too is such a bonus Love the videos, wouldn't mind a little bit at the end about possible upgrades for a less budget friendly version but that's nitpicking really Keep up the excellent work 👍
While you were posting this up, I was drafting B/W LifeDrain at my FNM. Did GREAT. Top end was 3x Epicurist of Blood, and a Sovereign. 2 each of Vampire Neonate, Daybreak Chaplain, Child of Night, Nightmare's Thirst, and 3 Skymarch Bloodletter, plus some copies of Invoke the Divine, Sovereign's Bite, Macabre Waltz, and Revitalize. 1 Liche's Caress for extra removal, and a Skeleton Archer. Had a copy of Ajani's Welcome, and Ajani's Pridemate, to add insult to injury. Deck was just a hammer; felt like playing a Constructed deck. I won games just by playing creatures, and hitting people with Neonate in their end step. I think my favorite moment was watching the look of relief turn to horror when he milled an Epicurist into my graveyard, and I Waltzed both it and a Neonate back. Well, that, and a P1/P1 Crucible of Worlds. Also: assembled a Muldrotha deck you might like.
Nice. I have been playing a similar deck for this Standard season with good results. I thought I would have to disband it after rotation, but your video has given me some ideas how to continue it. Keep up the good work!
Been playing a version of this deck on Magic Online. I made a few changes adding some less budget cards such as Vraska's Contempts as well as a few other changes since I'm less worried about it being rotation proof. I have to say, I don't think I have seen a card cause as many scoops as Arterial Flow in a long time, especially when you use one on turn 3 and again on turn 4. It has been pretty fun so far. I do want to point out that if you play this version on Magic Online that the Amonket Tattered Mummy is nearly 4 tix each right now and even the M19 version is .5 tix each, so the budget will go up a bit. I dropped mine for 4 copies of Gifted Aetherborn which is great as always. One other card that has been doing really well in the deck is Bloodhunter Bat, which I dropped 2 copies of Chainer's Torment for. I know it is going to rotate, but while it is here it is cheap and works perfectly in the deck. I have even been tempted to drop the other 2 Chainer's Torments to run a full playset. I also dropped the Murders and a copy of Walk the Plank for 3 Fatal Push. I also played around with the sideboard a bit, though not a whole lot. The biggest change is dropping 1 copy of Golden Demise and a copy of Icy Manipulator for 2 Yahenni's Expertise, just to get rid of those pesky Vine Mares.
I just started playing MTG and this was the first deck I built, since it is so cheap and I REALLY like black cards. So far I have a lot of fun, playing against my friends that also just started! I really like how it is rotation-proof, so maybe I'll start going to FNM in my LGS. I know not to expect too much but it is, after all, a dirt-cheap deck. Doesn't even have a single Rare in it!
Yo Dev I love all your videos man, I watch every single deck tech, even though I rarely build them on paper, now with MTG Arena I'm playing literally all of them and having so much fun. I've built your mono black zombies, Grixis Midrange, and mono green stompy. Although to be fair I have the stompy in paper as my standard deck too. But I'm so glad I can easily play all these fun decks you show us now! Grixis is such a cool deck in particular but I feel like the post-rotation version that I'm playing now is missing something. I might just need to wait for rotation for it to really come together, though.
$5 for this?! I love these types of deck. Effective budget decks are some of my all-time favorite. They really give you bang for your buck. Great deck, man.
Why no Epicures of Blood? It's a vampire and it also deals one to your opponent whenever you gain life. This deck gains a heap of life so over a game this could deal decent damage, and since it is on a 4/4 body it can also help finish off an opponent with a open board. I think it would be great for the deck!
Love the build Dev! Definitely budget, not sure it’ll hold up against some of your other post rotation deck but certainly a grinder! Loving the videos man!
Looking at this deck today (post rotation), are there any significant changes you would make? Love the videos btw, by far my favorite MTG channel on UA-cam. Keep up the great work!
Bishop of the Bloodstained has a great effect if you are playing so many vampires. I ran a deck at a couple FNM that was mono black aggro. Lots of little vampires and bishop finished up the game most of the time. Doesn't rotate either. Sideboard piece?
I love this deck and the channel. Subscribed. Do you have suggestions about what to sub out for sb transformations against aggro and control? Obv, this is on a matchup by matchup basis, but what are the general cuts and subs vs aggro or control?
Reminds me a lot of the Liliana plainswalker deck for the 2019 core set. I've been looking for an upgraded version of it and this will definitely suffice!
4x Fell Specter with 4x Arterial Flow and add 4x Mind Rot and some Agonizing Syphons, Grey Merchants and Scythe Specter then lead into Chainer's Torment. I might try this out, could be a pretty good budget deck
Sup, Dev! I love your videos, man! I can't wait to try this deck out! I was looking at a few cards to maybe put in the deck. I was wondering why no Mind Rot in the main deck or sideboard? Again, keep up the good work man!
Hmmm, I think I want to make a mono vampire deck with sanctum seeker and epicure of blood with some of those low end vampires you have in this deck. Thanks for getting the hamster wheel in my head working.
Sovereigns nite is basically a sorcery speed lightning helix - a modern all star for burn. Not bad for 5c and doesn’t require fetchlands and hurt lands to play. Same with the sovereign vampire, it’s a lightning helix for B.B. and a 3/4 flyer for 3. Not bad in anyone’s book
Will need detection tower to handle vine mare. Also the angel that gives hex proof to players hurts this which detection tower bypasses. IDK if it's budget or not - but since no one is using or talking about it I have a feeling it is.
I would highly suggest putting in ravenous chupacabra over walk the plank. It may cost 2 more Mana but you get a 2/2 body out of it as well as being able to destroy any creature.
Did you consider torgar for this deck? I took your list and added him as a one of...thus far he hasn't don't much I actually used him to get me back up when I was behind instead of dropping the opponent to 10 like I had originally intended also what about bishop of the bloodstained since it contains a decent amount of vampires? Others mentioned twilight prophet and I've considered sanctum seeker...perhaps it's due to you trying to keep the cost to a mere 5$ but even with those inclusions I'd still consider it a budget deck if you think any of the cards mentioned would deserve a slot what would you pull?
Hey, Dev, is there any chance you could provide Arena format decklists for decks like this? Importing the deck to Arena is the fastest way to figure out what you need for it, and the game won't let you add cards you don't have without spending wildcards on them if you input the list manually.
I like it. It will consistently do what it is built to do and gets to use cards that wouldn't see play otherwise. I'm not in love with vampire neonate, but I get it's in there as a one drop and for the life loss and it's a vamp. But I think Dusk Legion Zealot or even Child of Night could find a home here. Also would like to find room for Bone Picker, Doomfall, (off theme) and Gifted Aetherborn (rotating out). But I love me a good silverblack deck!
Built this, made a couple tweaks and I have managed to piss off a few people with it. Nothing like making someone topdeck on turn 4 after Duressing them on turn 1 and 2. I'm in to the whole deck for $12 including sleeves.
potential names: Burnt Toast (has burn in the name and is mono-black) hot chocolate (people often burn their tongue on improperly cooled hot coco and it black) drano (life drain effects) tarred and feathered (tarred is black burn and feathered is the 12 flyers)
i love budget decks! but for anyone who has the extra dough or maybe they already have the cards, what sort of upgrades could be made to make the deck better, if that's possible. thanks!
4x Gifted Aetherborn instead of Tattered Mummy would be an obvious include I'd say. Like Dev has said before, he's young, he's black and he's gifted :). Also a vampire for arterial flow. 2x Vraska's Contempt instead of 2x Settle the Score in the sideboard is also an obvious include. Hour of Glory is at least much better since it's instant speed. Other cards like Aethersphere Harvester is probably a good 3 drop for this deck. Walking ballista might fit. But you want to be careful with how far you stray away from theme of the deck. But those two are constructed all stars (especially ballista) but will be rotating out very soon.
MTGICE thanks, i got most of the non- budget cards you suggested, if you have any idea what would I substitute those card from the ones that in the deck
Twilight Prophet 2BB flyer w/ ascend keeps with the vampire theme, Liliana’s Spoils is 3B sorcery w/ discard and fetch, Karn for card draw/chump blockers.
Mono-Green Stompy is probably a bad matchup for the deck :-/. Gifted Aetherborn is at least fine against Carnage Tyrant and Vine Mare since he has deathtouch. Maybe one copy of Detection Tower in the maindeck (if Stompy is a big part of your meta). Also Doomfall could be good, it allows you take their big threats out of their hand or make them sacrifice it if they have it on the battlefield (as long as they have nothing else out). Other cards like Vona's Hunger or Lay Bare the Heart might do the trick as well. I'd at least try out Lay Bare or Doomfall and take Icy Manipulator out of the sideboard. I don't think Bontu's Last Reckoning would accomplish much since a good stompy player would play only 1-2 threats and keep the others in hand to deploy if everything goes south. You can try it if you feel the deck is pressuring the stompy player and he HAS to deploy all of his threats. Still I think the Stompy player might come out on top most of the times. Regarding the other cards to add you can take out Vampire Neonate for some Ballistas and maybe a couple of fell specters for the Aethersphere Harvesters. If you want to put in a playset of Harvesters I'd first try to take out 2 Specters and 2 Bloodletters and see how you like that before you make further adjustments. With the Ballistas and Harvesters in the deck, arterial flow might not be as appealing. You'll have to see how it plays out, making too many changes can just flat out make the deck worse :P.
Has anyone tweaked this yet to make it modern? Only thoughts I had for that was Bone Splinters, Vampire Nighthawk and Geth's Verdict. And if playing table magic add a couple Deathrite Shaman's.
So, i like this (these type of) deck(s), i think this one could benefit a lot from adding in 2~3x Axe (or also any type of cheap budget type equipment that raises power by 2, not sure what that captains claw or w/e does in $ atm) seeing it's so creature focussed … souping up those small creatures to take on some bigger stuff and pose more of a thread seems like it could be very beneficial to the deck.
Strictly Better MtG Hey you can't go tapping vine mare with icy manipulator! (Just in case you haven't read it enough yet)
You can only deal with it after sideboard with duress or 2 golden demise, maybe put doomfall in there?
how you gonna leave out twilight prophet here?
Hey with all the discard and things why no raiders wake? Just curious from a fellow builder standpoint
Really wish you would stream your playtesting. You're one of the few mtg youtubers that doesn't sound/feel like a drill in the side of my head.
Totally a Video playing the deck would be great, but maybe he doesn't like mtgo and investing in a cam+ asking the shop/players if he has their consent to publish the video is a lot of extra work for only a bit of contend.
Again love the Idea too just two reasons why he probably doesn`t.
Dev, Nox and Merch are some of the only MTG content creators that sound like they're speaking to you as a mate, instead of narating some fucking novel
So, the text on-screen says 2 Walk the Plank, but there are definitely 3 copies in the deck. Sorry for the mistake!
This deck is hilarious ! :D
Holy hell, $5? Getting outta hand with the prices on these things Dev, that's a whole paycheck
Kinq Isaiahhh Yeah calm down Dev
Get a real job, beggars can't be choosers! :P
Yeah my last deck 7,50 so toughen up man it is a harsch competativ world out there follow up or you`ll lose. Still manageable with some saving in food and electricity xD.
I know right? I had to choose between my Monster drink or a deck of cards.
If your paycheck is $5, I suggest you return to the 1800s. Buy stocks, then cash out around 1920 and hoard gold and liquor. You will one day be able to afford these decks.
I absolutely LOVE rare-less decks, and mono black? Oohwwee!
Memorial of Folly is even better that it does not put the creature card on top of your library....it goes into your hand directly.
This looks like a decent Arena deck too. “Pretty much no Rares” is the Arena equivalent of budget, after all.
You are going to get destroyed playing this deck in arena tho
It will work for a few weeks in Free Play while you build up the resources to make an actual deck.
Mattman324 Mythics are easier to craft than rares in Arena. I hate when someone posts an Arena “budget build” and it has 12 rares.
I know, it bugs me too. Mythic wild cards aren't that hard to accumulate, getting a few Rares is like pulling teeth because every deck needs fucking 40 of them anymore if you're playing over 1 color.
Been playing this on MTGA. Unfortunately, it is pretty terrible. Merchant's Budget Black is fairing much better but does have cards that will rotate.

Love the videos, wouldn't mind a little bit at the end about possible upgrades for a less budget friendly version but that's nitpicking really
Keep up the excellent work 👍
How's the deck working for you? Been meaning to get into standard as well, and the cost of this deck made jumping in a no-brainer haha
I was on the fence of getting into Magic and now I'm gonna go to a magic shop in my city tomorrow after work to buy this deck.
I love that all your creatures survive Chainwhirler. That might be a mayor factor
This deck is sweet, my girlfriend just went out and picked up all the cards for this thing. the sleeves cost more than the cards.
Nice. I have been playing a similar deck for this Standard season with good results. I thought I would have to disband it after rotation, but your video has given me some ideas how to continue it. Keep up the good work!
Found your channel a few days ago, and I gotta say, "you're killin it"! Keep up the good work my man.
Been playing a version of this deck on Magic Online. I made a few changes adding some less budget cards such as Vraska's Contempts as well as a few other changes since I'm less worried about it being rotation proof. This is my kinda deck :) Love that you show that building on a budget can still bring the heat.
Add send Robin is chupacabra to it. And if you can get your hands on a few dollars I'd highly recommend adding some Demon of catastrophe.
That's a sweet deck! I do enjoy seeing cards you don't see every day. Thanks Dev!
Love the build Dev! Definitely budget, not sure it’ll hold up against some of your other post rotation deck but certainly a grinder! Loving the videos man!
OMG I just built this in MTG: Arena - and it is FAST! :-) Still working my way to getting the other Chainer's Torment. Thank you for this content!
This is my favorite deck tech to date. I'm definitely playing this. Thank you sir!
Looking at this deck today (post rotation), are there any significant changes you would make?
Love the videos btw, by far my favorite MTG channel on UA-cam. Keep up the great work!
If I understood correctly, this deck costs 5 dollars! Excellent
Nice deck Dev, i like this. I think it would be really funny to knock out a $250 Standard deck with this. $5 is just awesome.
and this is my FNM deck for the foreseeable future, thanks Dev. PS: when are you going to see an Arena Twitch stream? I would watch that for sure!
That Saga is actually kind of fun in this informal format. I did manage to have a 12/12 from the final chapter, but I've also had a 3/3 LOL!
Bishop of the Bloodstained has a great effect if you are playing so many vampires. I ran a deck at a couple FNM that was mono black aggro. Lots of little vampires and bishop finished up the game most of the time. Doesn't rotate either. Sideboard piece?
Still rocking this deck in 2021. It's so simple an budget an thematic an fun.
Thanks! That really helped me out a lot! I’m going to build this deck and play it the next time I go play magic!
Any concerns with stalling? Would Arguel's Blood Fast be a reasonable addition?
I added the precon Lilianna from core set 19 from the planeswalker deck it fits pretty well within the deck as a few dollar upgrade
I love this deck and the channel. Subscribed.
Do you have suggestions about what to sub out for sb transformations against aggro and control? Obv, this is on a matchup by matchup basis, but what are the general cuts and subs vs aggro or control?
oh lord I thought there was a typo but boy was I wrong. Nice brew Dev
Reminds me a lot of the Liliana plainswalker deck for the 2019 core set. I've been looking for an upgraded version of it and this will definitely suffice!
Fell specter is such a lovely card . It just sucks that a lot of my discard deck will rotate out soon. So many pieces came from amonket
Add throne of god pharaoh and harvester also goes well with conquistador
KineBuds what is harvester?
it's a post rotation list
This is such a good one, I love your content, I always keep coming back to your channel. I love it.
8k subs away bud! You will get it!!! You are the best youtuber on UA-cam
Would love to see an updated version of this deck
Love your budget deck techs dude. Keep em up
So many enter the battlefield abilities and no abnormal endurance?! It's way better than the bite for sure.
trueseeing play Supernatural Stamina first before it rotates
What upgrades would you guys suggest from Guilds of Ravnica?
I love this deck. What are your thoughts on torment of hailfire? I realize it's not rotation proof but still.
This deck is fun and can absolutely get some surprising wins in Arena. Thanks Dev great job!
Any chance you could export your Arena deck and paste it as part of your video description when you discuss an Arena deck?
I like how this video was posted right when my fnm starts. Now the prices will go up!
What do you think about 2 Liliana, the Necromancer in this deck? I wouldn´t have to buy them since they are in my stock anyways.
Is there a budget replacement for Tattered Mummy?
Disregarding the icy vine mare thing, is it still worth it in the side board? What do you pull it in against? Stompy?
Would Bontu's Monument have a place in this deck?
Love these sub $20 decks. You should play some MTGO or Arena games Dev, your audience would love to watch you pilot some of these decks just for fun
Sword point diplomacy? The card is insane
Just played against this deck in Arena, it's fast when it's working. Great vid!
@dev what would you add to take it up a notch? Would Lich work here for card draw?
Dope dev love the deck as always and really looking forward to rotation switching things up
Where’s that intro tho
Hey, Dev, is there any chance you could provide Arena format decklists for decks like this? Importing the deck to Arena is the fastest way to figure out what you need for it, and the game won't let you add cards you don't have without spending wildcards on them if you input the list manually.
Can we have a post-rotation version of this? with the same pricetag, please
Any ideas on how I can squeeze a Marionette Master into this? I feel like it's fitting for the burn. Maybe I'm just too hopeful. :)
But I love me a good silverblack deck!
fell spectre with the black memorial. slow but recycled damage is always fun.
its like a megrim flyer
I run Bontu's Monument in my version for MTGA. This is my main deck!
Memorial to Folly returns it to your hand, not top of library FYI
Built this, made a couple tweaks and I have managed to piss off a few people with it. Nothing like making someone topdeck on turn 4 after Duressing them on turn 1 and 2. I'm in to the whole deck for $12 including sleeves.
hey man I dont know how you choose what decks to put together but id really like to see what you could do with guttersnipe that just got reprinted
How do you make decks on mtg arena? I can't seem to buy individual cards to construct decks but rather only earn packs every now and then.
I'm definitely going to be buying this deck. It's perfect for casual play with my friends since it's so cheap and simple.
potential names:
Burnt Toast (has burn in the name and is mono-black)
hot chocolate (people often burn their tongue on improperly cooled hot coco and it black)
drano (life drain effects)
tarred and feathered (tarred is black burn and feathered is the 12 flyers)
Would you include a couple copies of Twilight Prophet if budget allows?
This deck is fantastic! !!! I'm going to make a couple of these decks for my students to play after school.
i love budget decks! but for anyone who has the extra dough or maybe they already have the cards, what sort of upgrades could be made to make the deck better, if that's possible. thanks!
I went 3-1 at fnm. Beat Teferi control, beat nexus fog, beat dimir control. Did lose to a cat deck. It was really fun!
What Cards would you recommend to upgrade the deck if I have them. Like fatal pushes or something
What guilds of ravinca cards can we add to this. Or mix it with dimir
very cool budget deck, your videos are always fun :)
How would you upgrade that deck so it won’t be a budget deck?
MTGICE and what would you suggest in the side against vine mare/ carnage tyrant?
Almost 100k supcribere my dude, so happy
I chuckled at the Subway line. Don’t skip lunch!
This looks super fun! I may have to make a video with this in it.
Has anyone tweaked this yet to make it modern? Only thoughts I had for that was Bone Splinters, Vampire Nighthawk and Geth's Verdict. And if playing table magic add a couple Deathrite Shaman's.
Definitely playing this on Friday, thanks!
I'd realy like splashing white for ajani's pridemate in this deck because most (or all) of the burn is also lifegain
I've been playing a blue green rotation proof merfolk. I've love to see ur take on the deck
