Well I'm going a bit off-topic here but some countries (mostly African countries) when rebels find child soldiers they use them as child soldiers since well most probably their parents were murdered or they escaped from the government soldiers but thats because the rebels needed more MP for their rebel group.
Really sad to see this as a korean- having to fight against your brothers. The brutality of the korean war isn't talked about enough so this film is a great spotlight to showcase it.
Most Northern fighters were victims of fate, they hardly have any belief in a socialist future. I imagine putting myself in their shoes, annoying WPK and then failing to flee to Republic of Korea would have awful consequences (songbun).

For a real war never and never use your gun to shoot your enemy at night. The best way to defeat your enemy at night is hand grenade. Hand grenade is the most effective and your enemy cannot locate your position. Use gun when closer encounter with your enemy.

The south was pushed back to Busan..Any further would be the sea.. Food was running low, ammo low, medical supplies low.. So they decided to attack since they knew the north was not expecting it
