I think the biggest deal breaker for DS1823xs+ is that it ONLY support Synology brand HDDs that are very pricy. You should have mentioned that,
You are completely right and I realized this later on. If you listen carefully about 4/5th in, I say something like "there are two main things..." And I didn't realize that it was THREE, but my script cut off a chunk of sentence and I didn't realize till much later. Thanks for commenting man
This basically destroys any reason to buy a DS1823xs+
That was the main reason why I ditched Synology and build my own about a year ago.
Very happy I did as I would have outgrown it by now anyway, or I would have to go through a painful upgrade HDD's across the board exercise.
@@Hansen999 what is your custom NAS OS and platform?
@@am7-p I decided on Unraid because of the possibility to add different drives in your storage pool, another important thing was Docker and VM's.
Unraid just seemed to tick most of the boxes for my requirements.
Watching this video when my 1821 gets delivered tomorrow and I feel better
SHR and a thousand dollars cheaper is why I went with the DS1821+
I probably wrote this before on some other video you made, but it's worth repeating: Great content!
As much as I love your videos, Rob, the frustration with the seagulls is always a highlight! :D
For sure. The content is informative and very insightful, but I always come for the seagulls shoutout.
WHY DO YOU ALL HATE ME AND MY QUIET.
@@nascomparesbecause you’re no fun at parties.
*stands in corner of the party, sipping a carton of Ribena and quietly mumbling product model numbers* ...what makes you say that?
@@nascomparesI looked at my window to see if my Brittany's gulls were flying around and even stop the video to confirm…
Anyway. The biggest problem for me with Synology is the quick end of support of features update. At a time my trusty DS 1010+ was deemed as obsolete heaven when my DS213+ was slower in everything under DSM. Had me go to QNAP and ultimately to Unraid.
The ONLY thing stopping me getting the DS1821+ is FOMO. If they brought out a DS2124+ with even mild processor bump I'd have it in my basket now. Only concern is if they restrict hard disk usage. Other than that, this does everything I need. I have a DS923+ full of 8TB drives, so, if I will propogate these drives over to an 8 bag. I've got a 4TB SSD just for 'synology photos'. My 923+ has an ethernet direct connect so as to not push data round my network. I'd like to see this boosted upto 10gb.
Great video Rob! I standardize my business on DS1821+. I stick 32GB RAM and a duel 10GbE NIC in them. Video production is what we use them for and they crush the workload!
How many users and what file types and weights?
The issue that concerns me with the SD1821+ is that you can not go above 108TB in the same volume, which means if I use a high-capacity HDD, I need to break it down into multiple volumes. This is the question that I do not have an answer for... Will I lose throughput speed since each volume will have fewer drives???
@nascompares, thank you for the video, I was looking at these two models just this morning to evaluate for my non-profit.
Really good video and very happy to hear i can stay on my 1821+ Unfortunately i couldn't find your patreon link in the description. Had to find it elsewhere
Thanks for the heads up bud, genuinely appreciated and I will amend that asap
How much longer do you think we need to wait for a DS1824+?
My question is when it does arrive will it use the same DX517 expansion unit?
I am thinking of adding a DX517 to my current 1019+ to keep me going until the new 8 bay arrives and when it does get here for me to buy I can also add the expansion unit to it.
It's been 14 months since the DS1823xs+ was "unveiled," half a year since this video was made. The DS1821+ is still selling for 1,000 USD. Has anyone else been waiting for the price to drop?
I am waiting for the DS1824+.
I'm waiting for the DS1824+ to replace my DS1813+. Hope it's coming soon. Thanks for the video anyway!
Same here, I wish Synology would hurry up while I still have spending money.
I want to move from 5 bay DS1019+ to an 8 bay DS1824+ or whatever they call it.
Doing the same with an 1812+
I feel like the same boat but 1517+ as my start point
Thanks for sharing this comparison. Your delivery is hilarious... #NewSubscriber
Thanks for your video. Do you know when the 1824+ will come onto the market? I've been waiting for it for a year now.
In the US we get nest business day replacement on xs. Makes sense for business… but lack of shr is a bummer for sure.
for some reason, i imagine the videos are filmed inside a shipping storage container by some import/export harbour docks… explaining the seagulls and the immediate access to new nas products from china. 😂
*shhhh* they'll hear you at the border crossing!
Thank you, Rob! I am putting in an order for the 1821+ on your recommendation. Do you have any specific recommendation on which RAM sticks to pick up for this thing and how much will be enough. Do you recommend sticking with the analogy brand which I've heard is much more expensive? Is more automatically better.
I definitely am interested in have you help me with installation and configuring.
I bought each of these, the cheaper for home and the 23xs+ for my office. First thing I did on the 21+ was add in a 10Gb card. I used a hack I found to make the 23xs+ support SHR. :D
How's the SHR hack working out? Does it survive DSM updates? This is what holds me back from xs series.
It works perfectly, but unfortunately you have to redo the hack each time you update the firmware.@@smstnitc
I rarely react, but I have to say I love your Channel. Always check u before I buy Anything
I hate seagulls too
Super Hero. Well said, well done. Thank you.
THX !
Gave it a thumb's up solely for the TL;DR at the beginning. Thought these were 2.5"ers, so not watching... but I loved that time saver.
Excellent video, made my decision a lot easier. i for one need SHR.
Maybe just look at the video that JUST went live on the channel.....
One interesting thing. Can we install 64 GB? Some old videos showed that could be done accepting the upgrade bang at any moment. Some of these could use ECC or no-ECC memory to 64 GB?
I have two 1821+ boxes in a cluster and I "accidentally" put 64GB of memory in them. They've been running about 6 months and I haven't seen any issues, but I'm wondering if you see any drawbacks or potential problems.
this DS1821+ is 3 years old? is there an update to this? looking for an 8 bay, but something around $1,000, the DS1823+ is $1800
I wanted a native 10g network port. I bought the DS1823xs+ open box for $1200, have 32GB ram in it and dual 800GB Synology NVME's in it for cache. I still haven't reflashed it yet to be able to use any brand HDD's. Next is I need to make a filtered air silence box so I'm not hearing the harddrive sounding like popcorn going all day, and hide it in my basement somewhere.
I rip my blu ray and 4k disks on my home pc and play them with my zidoo .I dont need the intel one with grafics for storing iso's and playing them with my zidoo right and the DS1821 will do its work with 8 x 16 tb right? Thanks for the reply @NAScompares
Thank you for creating another fun and informative video. Would it be possible to make a video using the same parameters for similar Qnap products? I'm currently skittish about Synology due to their move to proprietary drives, cards and memory. I’m a photographer/filmmaker who has 75T of images stored on many drives and is looking to build a large highly searchable (image and facial) database. Thanks again.
P.s I’m currently studying 3D and AI generated set design and location building using Unreal Engine and Stable Diffusion AI on a Macbook Pro M1.
Tbh there will be one. SPECIALLY on QNAP and very similar subject too + the TVA-h874T4 drops soon
You missed the Out of Band management on the DS1823xs. How do you add that to the DS1821+
He also missed RAID F1 and 200GB volumes on the DS1823xs+. As well as the fact it is simple to enable SHR (at the expense of RAID Groups).
Thanks Rob. Validated my decision. I was pretty sure though that SSDs on the 1821+ could only be used as cache, not a storage pool?
Unless I'm mistaken, I'm pretty sure the DS1821+ was one of about 7 devices that had M.2 NVMe pool support enabled in the DSM 7.2 UPDATE. However only Syn branded SSDs
@@nascompares Ah thanks - must have missed it.
I'll need to talk to my wife about using some of her underwear (knickers) to pay for a couple of Synology SSDs.
@@nascompares Correct, the DS1821+ has supported NVMe storage pools since DSM 7.2 beta.
Given Synology seem to be stopping support for older devices at around the 8 year mark, and we're almost in 2024, does this mean that the 1821+ has already kissed goodbye to 3/8ths of it's support window?
Hybrid raid capability is a big plus for my video editing use case. What is the most straight forward way to tell if a NAS has hybrid raid? The Asustor 12 M.2 Nvme NAS is currently at the top of my list to buy. - does it have hybrid raid?
Asus uses n5105,it is shit。aqc113 uses pcie3.0*2 ,12 m2 use pcie3.0*6。ridiculous。
Nicker can be CHFs? :)
I'm interested in seeing your watch collection, man.
I mean... You don't really...trust me, it's gotten out of hand. I can actually HEAR my attractiveness to the opposite sex decline with each Casio calculator watch I buy! I give myself maybe 18 months before I devolve into a category A nerd'linger. But on the plus side...I'm never late for anything.
It's possible to install a used and cheap Intel 10GbE NIC in the DS1821+.
Yes, used a bunch of different ones. But they will potentially limit the support Synology will give you. Check the chip of the card first!
Is it worth buying DS1821+ in 2024?
As an Ex Drobo user, I'm in love with the ability to pull and replace drives live, and the array rebuilds itself. The SHR seriously intrigues me. I'm wrestling with BYO or going with premade, but haven't pulled the trigger quite yet.
What are the recovery options on a dead/dying drive?
What about in-place upgrades/replacement of drives if I fill things out?
Is there a desktop app I can install for Windows that will tell me when a drive needs replacing?
Can I easily move drives from one branded NAS to another?
1. As long as you dont loose more drives than alocated for redundancy you just put new one in place of the old one.. click few things in GUI and pray no other drives dies while rebuilding the array (same procedure as any other system)
2. similar process as 1st question, you are just replacing 1 drive for another and then when array is rebuild to that new drive you can expand the array to new size
3. not sure, but you can setup email alerts
4. yes, take drives out of synology1 put them in synology2 that have same number of bays or more and you should be ready to go
@@astacc So it's essentially the same functionality as the Drobo where I can yank drives live (So long enough space is available for the others to catch up) and drop in the new one? CAN I tell the Synology that I have intentions to swap out a drive, it does a pre-build taking the drive out of the queue, and then swap in, that way if there IS a failure, it can catch it?
1621xs+ is just fine
"It is pretty important I hate Seagulls" - Aha, but I hope you do like NAS'?
1824?
You’re wide array of words you use to mean a British pound has always confused me when you talk about prices. I always wondered, is there that many different currencies in the UK? I finally had to look it up tonight. I guess they’re all synonymous.
Rob says "knicker" to refer to UK pound, Euro and US dollar.
Look, i love your videos... but please stop using "knicker" as a word for money 😂😂😂
It sounds so wrong and sounds like a different word 😅
I'll be honest man...I don't know what word you are hearing, wanna elaborate? As it sound like that's more about you're thinking , thank what I'm saying.
